Do all P2XL users have stutters & slowdowns? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

My phone is smooth for the most part.
Some minimal stuttering when scrolling.
Sometimes I have stutters when swiping down or opening notifications, using multitasking. It's still less than competition.
What bothers me the most are the slowdowns, there are menus and UI elements that consistently have like 15fp/s.
I have these in certain locations or apps.
1. When I have the old open with menu pop-up with apps shown in a vertical list
2. Google Photos when in landcape and it seemingly switches to different color space
3. Some older gen apps
I haven't been able to find anyone else who confirms experiencing these issues too.
Google support was useless.

Try disabling Digital Wellbeing. It's helped a lot of Pixel users.

try going back to the latest version of oreo. I find it smoother and the battery seems more steady on the decline.

I already did that, it improved the responsiveness and delay, but all of these issues still stand.
I can't understand if I am truly the only one, because I can't find nobody complaining, except when there was that huge delay, but I don't have such extreme case.

I don't really want to do that, there are many improvements from Pie, that I really favor. Did You go back to Oreo because You were experiencing the issues, how long ago was this?

Try factory resetting then restoring. I'm on pie and have no stuttering whatsoever

I got my pixel 2xl in November and liked oreo but upgraded after a few weeks to pie. Had it going for a little over a month and battery was the first thing I noticed having the operating system take up second most battery next to screen on time. Too many features and background stuff happening I saw no benefit for so I decided to try Pie ROMs to customize the volume rocker menu and just have a cleaner gapps with less pie stuff. After a few weeks of different ROMs I just went back to stock Oreo and haven't looked back. My curiosity of trying pie and customizing ROMs was fulfilled and now I'm just keeping what I found the safest for everyday when shuffling apps and relying on battery.

Can you try to record a 4K video, then play it back on Google Photos, and as it's playing swipe up?

Nobody asked the most important things:
1: stock, unrooted?
2. Beta Q or official Pie?

If 100% stock, there's probably not much you can do except a factory reset. If you've already done that with little to no improvement, then maybe you just have an aging device.
If rooted, I'd suggest a full wipe, 100% clean flash of the latest factory image (leave the -w intact).
My 2 XL is one of the earliest released devices (Oct 17) and it still runs like new. Of course I'm rooted and flash a fresh factory image monthly (or every other month) and only charge my battery for 15% to 95% (no empirical evidence that it absolutely helps, but it doesn't hurt).

Stock official Pie. Had the issue for all the versions I ever had, since I started noticing the issues ~1 month after purchase. Purchased as new in 2018 November.
Not related to aging, maybe defective hardware. No physical or otherwise abuse. I take extra care not to overcharge the battery, or discharge.
It runs "like new" to me as well, but I have stutters in certain places, and it's uncertain to me if it's even a hardware defect, maybe it's software bug.
I have performed a factory reset. And I also tried opting in for Android Q beta, and then opting out, to make the phone download a new factory image. But I only ever did it with the phone, without rooting or anything similar.

I'm just not convinced that this is indeed a hardware issue.
I've seen users talking about this, a little bit, but none have taken this seriously, so maybe they just get used to it.
For comparison OnePlus 3T and Samsung S8 is so much more laggy compared. But I didn't get the low frame rates in earlier mentioned areas.
Edit: To further explain the reason for not RMA'ing. If there's no proof that the issue is RMA'able, then I'm just going to waste my and their time on something that can't be fixed.
Edit2: There are people saying that Samsung phones don't lag and stutter, yet I have not seen a single Samsung phone that doesn't lag and stutter. Yes, even the S10. Pixel 2 XL is smoother than the S10. But while it is smoother, I experience these frame rate slow downs, I do not see on other phones.

So You're saying, that You don't experience any stutters or lags, that I mentioned, or that I didn't..?
And You are not counting in, but notice the lags and stutters that get introduced, when you use the phone while apps are installing or updating, yes?

The only time I experience stutters/lag with my 2 XL is when I refuse to stop using Froyo era apps, or when messing with custom Roms / kernels. The lag usually goes away once I clean flash the factory image, or delete the 30 year old apps
I've been very fortunate with most of my devices. Maybe I'm not as adventurous in my flashing, beta testing, or experimenting as others,

Here is a example of the effect I experience: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Rj1VLkESQfonsaVAA
The Google Photos place has this, some older gen apps as in the video above.
And when opening a download, or getting the old gen app list, which looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/qhRZE09.png

1. Open Google app
2. Open any link which has a picture that can be downloaded

Absolutely, the "Open with" dialog is the single lagging place in all the Pixel UI.
Always experienced this in every version, stock / Q, with or without custom kernels.

[Q] Recent Apps lag

Is anyone else annoyed at the 2-3 second delay in showing recent apps that I experience from time to time. As a matter of fact it never opens very fast, at least 1-2 seconds. If so is there a fix our should I hope that when lollipop comes to the note 4 it will fix it.
There is a noticeable delay with mine as well.
Moved to Q&A.
This has happened to me but in every aspect of the phone. Rooted, no xposed, and only non-essential bloatware/update services uninstalled.
It is only for 1/2 a second or so, but the phone glitches like it is thinking hard then will complete the action. I even unrooted and reflashed my stock rom backup and still have it.
Probably going to return it today or tomorrow as my 14 day grace period ends. Pretty sad. I've tried just about everything to get it to stop and thought my stock rom would solve the problem, alas, no.
Still stock and not rooted (yet) and have the same annoying lag. Everything else is quick though.
It's the only issue i have with the phone, everything else has been great. I'm sure this will be addressed in a future update unless it's that way for a reason.

Same here. Hope they do something about it.
I've noticed mine is doing the same.. Is there a Task Manager app available that will allow you to see apps running in real time similar to that which comes with Windoze operating systems? In my opinion, this would help me see what is actually lagging when it does lag.
I found this from another thread here at XDA.. Am going to give it a shot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56320983&postcount=2
The link above is actually the fix for Xposed framework causing lag. Might help. Another help is turning off the animation which adds 1.5 seconds. Goto Settings/About phone/tap the build# several times until it declares you have developer options. Open developer options from the settings menu and find the animations and set to 0. Now the delay is down to one second even with Xposed framework. Solved.
One more thing, the build.prop may also need to be modified if running rooted stock. It took some googling and fixing but I finally got ADB working with the Starkissed kernel, ADB insecure and build.prop mods.
I don't have exposed installed and I have the lag as well. Watched and applied the fixes on this video and my Note 4 is way quicker! Totally amped!

Strange, have you always had the same lag or has it gotten worse? After those few changes mine is very responsive. I'm also not using TouchWiz, I'm using Nova Launcher. Wonder if that makes a difference.
Are you rooted? I've heard some strange things about lag after rooting which does not make me happy. This is probably the longest I've gone without rooting and I'm getting the itch

The lag is better but not as smooth as my Note 3 on cm11.
I am the first to admit personal fault, and I'd like to admit fault as to something I've done, but I have Odin flashed the stock rom and recovery back on the phone, and the issue is still apparent. Maybe the phone is not properly wiping data on a factory reset(also wiped everything in TWRP before using Odin to wipe the phone) causing a file to stick around regardless of Odin, but it is troubling and annoying to say the least.
Since I'm out of the 14 day period, here is hoping we get a developer to build a unified AOSP ROM in the near future.

[Q] Note 4 Terrible Lag/Performance

I am posting here because I've been through countless forums, hearing many suggestions, but none has helped.
My issue, is lag, and performance issues on my Verizon Galaxy Note 4. At first, it was just a hiccup every now and again, which is Touchwiz, and I didn't really mind it. But now, it's to the point where I cannot experience a fully smooth experience. Every window that opens glitches out and stutters, scrolling freezes and jumps, the notification bar freezes and glitches out, keyboard typing is delayed, and Swype is slow and laggy.
So then, I read online that the Note 4 usually scores above 43,000 in AnTuTu benchmark. Mine scored 28,000. I've cleared the cache partition, I've deleted just about every singe app, I've disabled bloatware, I've done almost everything. There are a few things I DON'T want to do, which are:
- Change launchers. I don't want Nova, or anything else. I like Touchwiz, and I don't care about the occasional hiccup.
- Factory reset. I'd like this to be the last resort, since I already have many passwords, settings, pictures, and music stored on this device.
- Change window animation blahblah in developer options.
I'm starting to miss my Note 3. It ran much smoother, and faster even. What are my options from here? I'd greatly appreciate the help.
Unfortunately this seems to be a problem that plagues all Samsung android devices. That's why I quit buying Samsung products many years ago. Last week I decided to give them another go with the Note 4 and I do love the phone, but..... it's doing the same things you describe and that I have experienced before. Samsung puts too much bloat that you can't get rid of on the phone and I think that all of that on top of touch wiz just makes for a very poor user experience. I had the droid turbo previously and want to go back to it after only a week with this device.
Dang! I guess my only hope is for Lollipop to make things smoother.
My Note 4 started lagging almost immediately when it was brand new. I brought the device home, ran the initial setup (which did restore most of my google play store apps that I had used on my previous device), and the lag started almost immediately. I spent far too much time trying task killers, phone cleaners, clearing cache, etc., etc. I finally bit the bullet and did a factory reset.
Doing a factory reset really helped a lot. I did make sure to turn off auto update and auto restore in Google Play Store first. After completing the initial setup I manually installed ONLY the apps that I use regularly .
Factory resetting is a bit of a pain, but not really all that bad. I think it is probably required to solve your problem.
Debloating the uneeded preinstalled apps helps too. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294 for instructions on how to debloat the Note 4 without requiring root (or voiding your warranty).
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Alrighty, thanks. I'm working on backing up music and passwords now, and planning on doing a factory reset very soon. And thanks for the link to that debloater software, I'll be sure to try that.
Hardware-related?
Sorry but the Touchwiz is terrible stuff is overblown. I haven't really had any stuttering after months of owning the device. The Note 4 came with the slimmest Touchwiz to date and, as you say, the Note 3 had no problems with performance. Yes, its good to debloat, but what you are experiencing seems to be more serious. The fact that your Antutu benchmark isn't close to where it should be is a red flag. My 910V registers 46680. If a factory reset doesn't work, you may try to return it or contact Samsung to see what options you have available to you.

holy**** i was just browsing around forums and i saw this
i have a note 2 on kitkat and it scores 31000 on touchwiz (Ditto note 4 rom)
amazing performace on note 2 thats why i didnt even feel the need to buy note 3 or 4
i dont think touchwiz is the problem specially for a device like note 4
You could try these things to get better performance
use custom kernel and use high freq (Nadia kernel in your case)
root you device and delete all waste apps from system/app and system/priv-app
OR
flash a deodexed rom
Worth case scenario you may have a slow internal storage causing all the lag and problems in that case backup your data and flash a stock rom and re flash a partition table for your device
this would definately solve your problem (had this problem on tab 2 10.1 and this last method worked for me)

if it is happening only to you then my guess is it is an hardware problem and get your device replaced
but better backup your device as the verizon people will want to format your device and reflash it before they declare it as a bad device and replace it

I just Antutu'd mine and got around 39,000 . Then I cleared cache and ram and the restarted, . After the test ran faster, can't say twice as fast just faster. The results were 40,0007. According to the comparisons mine was 5 below the listing for the Note 4. the one item that did bother me is that the S5 was listed one model ahead of mine, but 4 models away from the listed Note 4.
In your case there must be apps running that you don't know of. You have to check running apps in the app manager. Just look on the "ALL" listing and turn off any that you can turn off and don't need. Many of them show " Turn off" but it's grayed out which is total bs to me. Plus from some web searching I've read that the new S6 may be bloat free
Lastly, use Greenify- go to settings/assesibility/Greenify
Report back
Doing a factory reset seems to have solved the problem. Also, I didn't sync all my apps over, so that may have caused the problem the first time.
I'm actually scoring good, too. Thank you guys for helping!

That was the culprit in my case. Huge change that took my model to the top on the list registering 49,987. I'll leave it off for a day or 2 and see what happens to the battery performance. While using the power saver the battery has been stellar. From off the charger at 7:30 am Id have 65% by 7 pm
As far as lag, to get rid of it just set Window, Transition and Animator scale to "off" under Developer options and you should be good to go. I've done that since the S3 days no problem and phone gets waay faster.
So here we go again, it's lagging terribly again. The only different thing I did, was install the negative color notification widget from the Samsung store (which I didn't even do last time), so that can't be why it's lagging. There is literally no explanation.
And yeah, I've tried turning off window animation, and etc. That only got rid of opening window lag. But I'm still lagging hard everywhere else.
I have no lag issues at all. This Note 4 is the smoothest operating Samsung phone that I have ever owned. Here's my results:

So here we go again, it's lagging terribly again. The only different thing I did, was install the negative color notification widget from the Samsung store (which I didn't even do last time), so that can't be why it's lagging. There is literally no explanation.
And yeah, I've tried turning off window animation, and etc. That only got rid of opening window lag. But I'm still lagging hard everywhere else.

You could try Greenify (free version should be fine) and see which apps it suggests be hibernated. Just don't hibernate anything that generates notifications that you need. This has helped me in the past. Some apps like Facebook are notorious for causing battery drain. I uninstalled FB and use a browser link (saved to my home screen) to check my account when I want.
I have no idea what you guys did to your phone mine flirts with 50,000 on antutu every time and is like butter and runs so so cool

You're right on the Antutu, mine is about the same.
Maybe who ever has an issue should state on where and what part of the phone
examples-
Internet access and page return speed- connection related
Email access and refresh speed- same as above
Screen swiping speed- Touch wiz, try Nova
Stock apps performance- one's that don't need Int access and ones that do- possibly here could lie the issue
Texting - sending/ receiving ?- with Verizon this is purely connection related
Also, whoever suggested to kill the Face book app , you're 100% right. I use a link now and the whole phone works better
Last- I use the Samsung app- Vitamins. For me, I use is the system cleanup. This goes along with the left menu button clean up and Greenify

(Discussion) how are your impression of android 8.0 on pixel c?

As you all know Google has rolled out android Oreo to the masses , including the pixel c . I've got the notification on may tablet but too afraid to click install since 7.1.2 working really well for me . My main concern is battery life , being burned with 7.0 before I rather weary of the new software update to 8.0 . I'm using my tablet primary to take notes on lectures so I need a solid battery life.
Can any of you give me an impression of performance and general usability of pixel c with android Oreo installed ? I am using stock pixel c without and root or modifications
Android O works like a charm on my Pixel C. The performance is good, generally no stuttering, lagging etc. Microsoft Word isn't working though, Google Docs saves the day. I use the tablet for notes in lectures too, and I easily get a day and a half of use.
Edit: I'm on stock Oreo, no root, no mods.

It's nice to know . I'm using quid as my primary note taking app . The Oreo impression is generally best across all pixel devices except for people who wanted all of the new feature on their Nexus 5x. . . Anyways thanks for giving your input!
I guess I'll wait a couple of weeks before attempting to update . My exam is coming soon and I cannot accept change in my tablet yet.
P.s this forum is really quiet isn't it ?
Your welcome
I can imagine Android O isn't the best match with Nexus 5x. I had the 5x for a couple of months and all it did was throttle and stutter. My old Nexus 5 is way better on Nougat.
Yes, it's a little too quiet her here, hopefully it picks up.
OT: I tried to find Quid in Play Store, the only app I found was Quidd, a virtual sticker collector app in beta. Can't imagine it works well as a note app. Could you please guide me in the right direction?

I haven't actually used Netflix or Youtube, so I can't help you there. I enrolled in the beta program at dp4 and received an OTA of the public Oreo release about a week ago.
Only been on Oreo for a few days since installing and seems to be ok, no issues.
Doesn't "seem" to be a major update.

it's downloading atm
What's the issue with Microsoft Word? Is it something that's gonna be fixed soon you think?
Edit: Oreo is up and running, and no issues with Microsoft Word.

I've had both Word and Excel installed before upgrading to Oreo.
both apps work fine for me under Oreo. Would cleaning cache for these apps fix your white screens?

Clearing cache only gives me force close when trying to start the app. Force close is better than a white screen though.
Installed my OTA update to Oreo from Nougat 7.1.2 today. No issues so far but haven't really done alot either and update went smoothly.
I did notice that this Oreo update also shows a Updating Firmware splash screen that I've never noticed in other updates. Did I just not see them or is this new? What was changed in the FW?
I installed the update....
and apart from a oddity, where the update screen seemed to get stuck in a loop looking for further updates (I had to shut the pixel c down, and start it back up, to fix this)..it's been a fantastic update so far, very smooth and far more fluid. Everything seems to be a bit snappier, and it seems to be loading webpages and youtube more efficiently, and quickly..
BUT!!...I wouldn't recommend you update immediately if you, can't afford for anything to go wrong, as i tend to find that something will be broken somewhere, that we're not yet aware of (like Picture in Picture crashing when you try to use it)....
Maybe wait until you've got all your important stuff, out of the way before you update...
Hope this helps?

nah , it´s okay. To be expected really. after all next month pixel c will be 2 years old.
No, afaik project treble will be available only on phones launching with O.
About my experience, the update seems pretty nice so far. The performance is about the same. I never had lag or bad perf on this tablet honestly. The only problem I have had are two random reboots two days ago. The rest is fine.
As with all major revisions of android, it will take some time before all the apps are fully compatible with the Os and use the new APIs.
So I flashed in fastboot and run magisk. There is a weird situation when you reboot to go into recovery it says it is flashing firmware, I not seen that message before.
Magisk works, passes safetynet check.
I saw mention that Word crashes, well that is still true initially, when I open a document, it opens then then closes again, tried it 3 times then it stayed open, something about needing to download fonts? So it works eventually.
Battery status is weird, when plugged into power it is says is it NOT charging, when I pull USB cable out, it says it is charging. Small bug, but what you expect for version 0 of 8.
Chrome closes and reopened a few times, but then settled.
I rolled back from clean Oreo to Pure Nexus 7.1.2.
The main reason why is unbearable lags in Youtube app - when the active video is minimized and you want to browse Youtube it's just completely unusable. I think couple of times it stayed this way even without a background video.
Overall I was not happy with the performance so went back to Nougat and the difference is night/day.

How's the RAM management after December update?

Hello, been following the Pixel 3 for quite some time and contemplating changing to the Pixel 3 from Pixel 2. But the RAM management issue is holding me back and since the December update claimed to have solved the RAM management issue, I am wondering how is the fix, any more random closure of spotify and other apps?

It is for the most part eliminated. I've only seen it happen if you have a gazillion apps open and not like before where you had 3 or 4 and it'll refresh or close the first one. I use Spotify on daily basis at work for several hours as I deliver and never had it close on me even after having a lot of apps in the background.

I haven't had any issues on the December build, or previously. The security blog was pretty vague about the depth of the fix. On Spotify, have you checked the size of the cache? It can get really huge depending on which settings you select. Try deleting that cache from within Spotify settings. Mine had grown to over 2GB and I had no idea. It's worth a try. You may already know there were a ton of functional improvements on this last update, even for the P2.
It's definitely better. I haven't had Spotify close on my when playing a game or taking photos like it was previously.
I'm still having ram issues when having YouTube playing in picture in picture mode and taking a picture and typing in Snapchat. That's one of the only problems I've been having. Spotify and Snapchat works a lot better after update. I replicated it with all background apps closed and still same thing.
Doesn't work near like the note 9 i will tell you that. Lets say I have a game 2 apps back and i switch to text or messages and boom i go back and game restarts. On the note 9 i could put it 15 apps back and boom still holds progress

I second this. It's better but not to the level of Note 9. The Note 9 does have 2 extra gigas of ram so it's not really a fair comparison.
Having no issues whatsoever on mine. What little issues I had before are gone now.
Still closes Pokemon Go when you have more than two apps open, especially the camera.

Yeah mine actually has 8 gb so it is double the pixel but still would like to see things a little closer in top tier devices
I find that the Dec update fixed a lot of problems with smoothness. It was even smoother after I did a fill fresh install/wipe through the official full rom. Battery seems better too.

One UI 3.0 // Slow animations and app drawer background

Hello.
I updated my S20 to 3.0 One Ui and i have two problems.
Navigation bar gestures are slower then usual and opening apps too.

I have the same problem with a S20 Plus after switching to Android 11. Laggy when switching from applications to Home. A little lag when opening applications on the Home section. I tried a hard reset, wipe cache partition but no change. It is possible to change the firmware to another country. Maybe we can solve the problem.
Yesterday updated fine. Had a problems with big lagging but today everything is perfect and smooth without any changes from my side.
It's big update so I made a factory reset
One of the first things I do any Android is turn off all animations in Developer Options.
Do the same on the PCs.
A need for speed.
So did I. But this is not a solution. Did you pay a lot of money for this phone to go into Developer Option and force your phone to work better? It's not like that? So it's not right what Samsung is doing with these updates. And on One Ui 2.5 I had the same lag.
It is very strange that many do not have this problem.

I reset the phone from Recovery Mode, I gave wipe cache partition and I still had lag. I hope it's a software problem. Do you think this lag comes from a hardware problem?
See what the cpu load is when it's doing this.
Turn animations see if it helps or not.
Does it happen in safe mode?

It behaves the same way in Safe Mode. I switched all animations to 0.5. I hope it will be resolved at the next update.

See if it's using excessive cpu or ram resources when that happens... if so track it down.
There may be something you missed, play with it.
Pay attention to any power management that is active, a known source of gremlins.
This is why when I have a fast, stable OS I like, I leave it be.

Unfortunately no...
My device is S20+ Exynos Indian.
Have exactly the same problems.
Samsung always f#kc things up with gesture navigation, I mean seriously how hard is to leave it transparent ff$.
Lag while using swipe gestures is happening for me on Nova launcher. I never use one ui launcher.
I guess samsung is still lagging behind other OEMs when it comes to third party launcher support for gesture navigation.

I was Nova Launcher prime user for a year, but i use gestures and on One UI 2.5, gestures was super snappy, super fast but now on 3.0, i feel like is lagging, like animation is 10 milisecound longer, and i hate it.

Animations by their very nature always slow down a fast machine which is why I always disable them.
Backup all data now. When Androids crash many times the only warnings you get are slow performance and subtle stability issues.
The next boot could be the last on that load. Normally Androids are very stable... if it's a good load.
Try a network reset. Double check all settings and clear system and Samsung apks data as needed. You could globally clear settings but you might as well do a full reload at that point.
You can try running SD Maid to see if it gets rid of some of the junk.
You could try something I normally never recommend, a hard reset. It may not help at all or the issue will reoccur if it's an apk or settings issue to begin with.
If the OS has been heavy used or has had large firmware updates done, it may be that time.
It only takes one bad install/uninstall to screw up an OS. If the load is older then 6 months now might be a good time... nothing like a clean OS with only the apks you use and like loaded.

So the phone was ok on 2.5?
Could downgrade it back to 2.5 if so.
Probably too late to return it; if not do so!
Otherwise having Samsung look it over be the best bet.
If it's a carrier phone, time to start digging into them to make it right.
Sorry to hear of this...
Upside is you get to practice your assertiveness skillset. You can never have too much of that.

Nope. And on 2.5 he did the same. Do you think it's a motherboard problem?
On the other hand, is it really normal to always keep a phone with 0.5 x animations?
