How come no one suggested "Hide Display Cutout" to hide the Pixel 3 XL notch? - Google Pixel 3 XL Themes, Apps, and Mods

How come no one suggested "Hide Display Cutout" to hide the Pixel 3 XL notch?
So, I did a google search because well, the notch on this thing is hella unsightly. The search was a shot in a dark and I came up with this link:
https://www.gadgetmatch.com/how-to-turn-off-notch-on-pixel-3xl/
Simplest thing in the world to turn off the notch apparently. I mean holy crap simple:
How to turn off the notch on the Pixel 3 XL:
First enable Developer Mode on your device. Dive into Settings > System > Advanced > About Phone.
Tap on Build Number seven times. Yes, seven times.
A new Develop Options menu will now appear in the Settings Menu. Dive into Developer Options.
Scroll down and look for Display Cutout under the Drawing heading
Tick the hide checkbox.
So, um, why all the third-party apps that don't work? This works in landscape mode so far in all the apps I've tested.

I'm on the q beta 3 and so far everything i've used hasn't been affected. So, if it was really this easy why all the hubbub-bub? I don't get it. Everyone descries this notch and yet I was able to turn it off immediately on following these steps.
My boss ordered the 3 SPECIFICALLY because he didn't like the notch, so, um, yeah, I'm showing him this tomorrow.

Well, the disadvantage this method has compared to the apps is the loss of screen space. The status bar is pushed below the notch, while the apps just blackout the status bar to hide it.

I know so many people who after 1 day (if that) simply reply with "what notch?"
It really doesn't bother me at all on a personal level

I agree with this sentiment 100%. Doesn't bother me in the least.

i almost didnt get the phone because of the notch... now that i have it, i really dont care as it doesnt bother me
im glad i didnt pass

It doesn't bother me either.

It only bothers the people that don't have the phone. The people that do have the phone have no issues with the notch

the notch lol. I barely even notice it. had the 3 xl for about 4 months now. doesn't bother me none

I agree. Thought it would be bothersome, but doesn't bug me at all. Barely even pay attention to it.

OP is right.
I think people kinda missed this. I did this on the first day because I watch a lot of youtube and use google search so it kinda shows up the most on those.
But honestly, best setting ever. I thought their was talk about Google adding more Display Cutout options, so that it would be black on both sides of the notch, this way you wouldn't lose any screen size, but the notch is hidden. Kind of like the OP6T has.

We've known about this since day one. The reason most of us don't want to use it is because we understand that the notch actually fills a purpose. It lets you move the status bar up, freeing screen space. That setting is designed to test how apps would work on a Pixel 3. It's not a hide notch function designed for end users. @Alekos, Google has said that they will add the ability to hide the notch. This hasn't happened so far sadly.
As for "apps that don't work", Nacho Notch works flawlessly for me, and becomes better with every update. This lets me keep the status bar on the side of the notch, but blacks it out.
I've personally never noticed the notch that much regardless though. If you really dislike the notch, I feel like a Pixel 3 junior might be the better choice.

Yes you are right. They said they would release a few options for the notch cutout. And they never kept their word. Kind of disappoints me because the need to keep their word, They aren't Oppo or Samsung )

Use Nacho Notch from the play store. It hides the notch, but leaves your status bar icons where they should be.

The rounded corners don't appeal to me. Square looks better. ?

or just use the phone for more than 1 day and be like the rest of us who "don't notice the notch" anymore.
most of us were adamant we'd "do something about it"
really is more hassle to hide than it is to just use it as it comes

I use the Nacho Notch app from the Playstore instead. It puts a black bar across so you can still use the space for status bar icons.
Would recommend over hiding the notch in developer settings.

Remove Status Bar Carrier

I wanna do what it says up there^
Or customize it.
This had been universally easy on Samsung devices and pre-marshmallow... But I've had no luck with any Xposed module yet. Tried the regulars, gravity box, wanam, firefds, x-blast, and a few moto-x modules.
My absolute last option will be to do a regex replacement for anything that says SPRINT but ughhh, that's like killing a squirrel with a 44 magnum.
Anybody able to point me to a more surgical method of this?
...(fear I might be stuck with heinous notification icons and carrier text in the bar until custom ROMs like RR hit the goop)

If you're talking about removing the carrier label you can do that from the settings of the phone
Flat style bar indicators will let you change the text, size and shape of literally every element of your status bar.

Nav bar hide & Gesture Navigation app

I know that there are plenty of "swipe gesture navigation" type of apps out there.
Some of the most prominent being XDA's Navigation Gestures, OnePlus Gestures, Sideswipe, etc.
However, I was pointed towards this one (unreleased, in the App Store): "Fluid N.G." https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid
I have nothing to do with creating this and am not trying to get any credit or anything; I just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention because it is the most fluid navigation system I have seen with a 3rd party app. I believe one of the OEM's implementation is a lot like this, but I forget which.
It's simple and might not be as powerful as others, but I really like it!
I'm using this too! Great app!

Appears to be essentially the same thing as OnePlus gestures which have a few more options and significantly more customization. However that may be it's a good find, thanks.

Yeah, it doesn't really offer more features than other stuff - however you have to actually use it to understand whats impressive. It's just... really "fluid" (hence the name, I suppose) and feels like a real phone feature instead of a hack.
Regardless, I have no vested interest in it - just wanted more people to know about it so the dev gets credit and/or money and can support it
I'm not invested in either myself. The OnePlus gestures feels just like the real OnePlus gestures, not a hack. I do think I get what you mean by hack because I've used several gestures schemes from exposed and so on and never real found one that was factory in feel. I figured that was why the OnePlus gestures didn't suck, it appears that they straight up kanged the real OnePlus gestures because the experience is indistinguishable. However it may be as long as folks get the joy of getting away from the horrid stock gestures it's all good.

If you are rooted then after activating your replacement navigation app, just add this to /system/build.prop
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
and reboot. The stock nav bar will be totally gone.
So i was trying the xda gestures app and it was meh, but the app in the OP is pretty smooth and simple, straight to the point.
hate the idea that i have to install a 3rd party app to do what my OP6 was doing out of box :\

So here's a interesting situation , using the app in the OP and hiding the navbar from the app, still produces a blindingly white navbar during phone calls. if i edit the build.prop as you suggest would it remove that completely?

Absolutely
I cant figure out how the stock gestures/recents/drawer passed muster. You know they were comparing their work to what everyone else did, Android, Apple, even the mod community where they get a lot of their "inspiration". I don't see any way I'm the executive making the go decision on the mess we were delivered. I do see myself having the person who put the idea on my desk escorted from the building by a couple big goons who were instructed to hit his head on every object between his or her office and the curb on the way out.
OnePlus Gestures app is the best
This is gold. I really enjoy the nav options and being able to hide the bar.
Coming from a OnePlus 6, I actually really like the solution in the OP of this thread better. It's more fluid than the stock gesture navigation on the OnePlus 6 and I love the little bubble that pops up when you perform swipe actions.
Great find OP! Thanks for sharing.
Also, for those having issues hiding the nav bar, make sure you have ADB properly setup on your PC and phone. Then plug your phone in your computer and use your preferred command prompt app to run the following command exactly as it is below:
adb shell pm grant com.fb.fluid android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
Or, if you're rooted, follow lollyjay's instructions in post #11:

Notch - Do you hide it? Do you notice it?

I've had my pixel 3 xl for 2 weeks now, and was intent on using nacho notch to hide it initially.
I did some reading up on nacho and a couple of other options and went to do some more research on the pros and cons.
by the time I'd read what I wanted to, I have to say... the notch really doesn't bother me now. I barely notice it
anyone else in the same boat?
or do you still hate it with a passion?
I don't like it, but overall the screen is so much better than the 2 XL so I deal with it.
I hid it at first with Nacho Notch then left the notch on for a while and have gotten used to it.
Tried it for a week, hated it, almost returned the phone because of it. Then I just disabled it and now love the phone. Also tried nacho notch but it's got some quirks I still don't like.
Doesn't bother me but I prefer to have it hidden.
I don't mind it at all. I've used Nacho Notch since day one.

[Request] Taller status bar

Oi, mates.
So, as we all know, the OP6T has a notch. Issue with it compared to Google's native software implementation is that the status bar mostly behaves like the notch isn't there.
If we take a look at the developer options, we can simulate a display cutout with the "Double display cutout" which realigns the status bar and gives it more breathing space. Unfortunately, that also makes the notch bigger as the OS simulates the bigger notch.
I've attached screenshots of both of the layouts.
If someone could possibly modify the layout to use a layout made for notches, I'd really really appreciate it. I believe this can be achieved via a substratum theme or a Magisk module that utilises the OOS.
If I'm being unclear or you're wondering something regarding the simulated notch (maybe using OSS to patch out the black bar so it's invisible?) Then please let me know and I'll try to elaborate.
Thank you in advance and I'm really hoping someone will fullfil the request.
Bump

I'm asking for an option to use the stock AOSP layout.
It might be nice if it also aligned with the end of the corner radius, as at the moment there's still a bit of dispay curve below the status bar and it kind of looks sloppy.

The AOSP implementation is to make the status bar as tall as the notch, which is what they are currently doing. I don’t see what you think the benefit will be if extra space is added.

I did. Since your the only person that would want something weird like that I very much doubt someone is going to take the time to make a useless mod
I think you're being 100% unclear as to what benefit what your asking for even has. Out of the box implementation is just fine in mine and probably nearly everyone but yourself book. If you want someone to go out of their way to make something you might want to give an actual use case for what your asking for or it's unlikely anyone will even try. Just my 2 cents though.

It's literally the way AOSP is. I use Google's gestures too, which people usually dislike even though OnePlus gestures are available. Why would I do that? Because I want a stock setup. Android is about choice, not "why that's pointless". Do you attack all those people with custom Zelda themed battery indicators and odd icon packs?
You can literally toggle this layout. Only issue is that you get a bigger notch.

What if people would like a stock layout? It's literally how Google implemented it. OnePlus modified it on top of what Google made (they basically removed it altogether but whatever)
Why would someone want a taller status bar? It's nothing but a waste of screen space. If anything, I'm trying to find a way to hide the status bar and display apps underneath the notch as if it doesn't exist.

That's what YOU prefer. Why is it so hard to grasp your mind around my preference? I prefer my status bar to be at a good position according to the curvature of the display. I work as a UX designer, and things like this bother me. I'd like to see if someone could take a look at this because it's a fairly simple task.

That's the thing, I like the stability and battery life of the stock ROM. + smart boost is a nice thing to have with 8GB of RAM. I don't think any other ROM (unless stock-based) will have those features. I literally just want a Pixel skin slammed on top of OxygenOS to revert what OnePlus changed. Someone will likely respond with "you should have bought a Pixel" but let's hope not.
Android is about freedom, right? That's why I'm asking for help to customise it to my liking. It's not even a big request.

Someone will likely respond with "you should have bought a Pixel" but let's hope not.
Android is about freedom, right? That's why I'm asking for help to customise it to my liking. It's not even a big request.

Even the simplest of modifications can be a royal nightmare to implement my friend. I might poke around a bit when I get off work and see what I can come up, mainly out of curiosity lol. Don't hold your breath though so it's been ages since I worked on Android.

No worries, cheers. I know small stuff can cause lots of trouble, but from what I've seen, every single one of these cutout simulations are APKs with resources in them. Using OSS to replace their backgrounds to transparent ones would possibly work, but it's just a theory. I appreciate it

This phone has a IPS display. So you can't totally hide the notch since you can see the screen lit up up there. Also the notch is pretty big, why would you want to change its shape?

Check my answer again. The youtuber disabled the notch on an AMOLED display. While any android phone you can disable the notch using various methods, on IPS displays you're still going to see the notch. While icons are moved down under the notch area, you also lose display space.

I understood your reply, friend. Maybe I'm not being clear because language.
Yes, I want to move icons under notch area. I know I'll lose screen space, but maybe is less annoying than icons disappearing under a point.

Without root you can't. Use that app, or if you don't want to use it, you can find some Magisk modules that can do that for you.
Xiaomi removed the options to hide the notch from the developer menu.

Thank you for answer. I'm already using Nacho, but if I need root to get icons bellow notch, for now it will stay stock.
Anyway, can you point me to a tutorial for this?
