3a XL VZW bootloader - hopeless? - Google Pixel 3a XL Questions & Answers

Well, I am a fool and didn't do some research before buying the 3a XL. I messed up. Entirely my fault. Hoping someone may have an answer that i've missed on how to unlock my bootloader. the entire reason i bought the phone was to root.

VZW pixels can't be bootloader unlocked. Return it and buy it from somewhere else

It was patched by Google and it's never been unlocked again. Pixel 2 and 3 never got it unlocked

How long is the backorder with asurion for a Verizon pixel xl 128 ?

Does anyone know how long the backorder is with asurion for a replacement Verizon black pixel xl 128 GB model ?
I waited about a week for mine, put the claim in on March 17th and it was available the 24th. Go onto asurions website and chat with a rep. They told me exactly when they were getting a shipment, and it happened. The pixel XL 128 I got was on the Feb patch and I was able to unlock the bootloader, hopefully yours will be able to be unlocked as well. I ran through the setup with no sim, so I'm not sure if that helped or not.
To the OP, what was wrong with your original device?

So yours came with the Feb security update and you were able to unlock your bootloader ? What happened did they send you the Google unlocked version and not the Verizon one ? So you just used the toggle to unlock your bootloader or did you use depixel8 ? Thank you for the heads up.

I messed up the screen on my nexus 6p and assurion had no nexus and offered two other phones then finally offered me the pixel xl. I stupidly updated and then read up on what needed to be done to root it. screwed myself. A broken screen claim for $150 to get a fresh refurb or if lucky possibly a new one.... has been crossing my mind lately. Even if the wait is a couple of weeks. miss my ability to be able to root and tweak it just a bit to my personal liking more than what google thinks we should.

Sorry to hear you couldn't unlock. Honestly I would take one pixel XL or even two 6p's any day, but if you liked the 6p, more power to you. I myself think the motorola Nexus 6 was much better than the 6p as motorola makes way better phones then the cheap maker of the 6p.
Thread reset,
Lets try this again and be more respectful this time please.

I didn't check my cid, I ran through setup with no sim, went and saw it was the Feb patch, then I enabled developer options to check to see if it was greyed out, and it wasn't. I toggled it and unlocked via fastboot.

Oh so yours is a Verizon version and not Google store. Many of us were hoping that they were sending out Google store versions but yeah probably too good to be true. My original device was depixel8 unlocked. If I can't unlock my replacement when it comes I may just use it until the new HTC ocean comes out then either keep the pixel XL as a back up or trade it off for a used Google store version or just sell it when I get the new HTC ocean. When the HTC ocean comes out I will be glad to have an sd card slot back ?

My CID is Verizon, so I'm not sure why I could unlock with the toggle. My original was depixel8ed as well. I haven't had a SD card capable phone in 5 years, so it doesn't matter to me anymore.

It has zero to do with the cid. Many other threads have dealt with this previously. You probably can unlock it due to the backlog of Pixel phones. Basically you got lucky. At some point this window will close.

He never said cid had anything to do with him being able to bootloader unlock his. He confirmed what I asked him which was is his cid a Verizon one and he confirmed yes his pixel XL 128 has the Verizon cid and is not a Google store version.

Really lol ok. Well when you post and assume something is was what's it's not then you do need it explained to you. The way to avoid that is to not insinuate things that you have no proof about or any reason to.
I guess I need to explain it so you can understand. I asked the one member if his cid is a Verizon one or a Google store one talking about the one he got as an insurance replacement from asurion. No where did anyone say a word about cid having anything to do with how the bootloader can be unlocked so stop trying to say that.
It's been posted on thread after thread that cid has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader so please stop assuming and insinuating that because it's not or ever was the case on this thread.

7.1.1 Feb patch, I was miraculously able to unlock the bootloader just using the OEM unlocking toggle
I opened a claim for a Pixel 128gb on Nov-28, 8 business days later the Pixel 2 they offered me is still back ordered. They offered me an S7 which I refused, then they offered me an S8 which is much better but I'm afraid I'll hate the Samsung bloat so I asked to continue to wait, and on Friday they told me they have a Pixel XL available but again, I opted to wait for the Pixel 2.
I don't know if I made the right call or not, sometimes I wonder if they offered me too much of an upgrade and now to push me to pick an S7 or S8, they'll just keep telling me it's backordered for weeks. When I call, sometimes I'm told 3-5 business days, sometimes 7-10, once they even told be 10-20 business days...
I'm surprised because I can go to the google store and purchase one right now and it could be at my door tomorrow, but Asurion probably orders those by the dozen (if not more) so that might be tougher to get.
The S8 might not be a bad option after all, specially with Oreo around the corner for it.

verizon warranty exchange = unlocked?

Hi all, I've seen some people say that they have warranty exchanged their Verizon pixel XL and when they received one back it was an unlocked pixel XL. Does anybody know if this is always the case, or only once in awhile. Would love to be able to unlock this phone

I have had to get 3 different pixels replaced. The one I got last year I had unlocked bootloader, but then my audio died, so sent it back to verizon for replacement. It was locked and past depixel8's use. Ended up having to send it back and the next. The last one they sent me was new and in the box still but still too new for depixel8. So no, I wasn't able to get one to unlock after my initial one. Even tried depixel8 before inserting some on the recovery devices.

Switch to...?

Hey fellas,
I literally just got my s8+ from Verizon. I am still within my period for about 12 more days to swap this out for a different phone.
Simple question is this: I know root is out for the s8+ but no bootloader hack yet. Does anybody think there is a better chance the pixel 2 will get the bootloader hacked before the s8+? (It's been out for a while now, I don't think it's going to happen to be honest)...
I don't think that the bootloader may get cracked on the Verizon Pixel 2/Xl. However, you will get updated for 3 yrs, that's enough for me to switch.

Reality is, if you have a Verizon 2 XL chances of ever having a bootloader unlock exploit is near 0%.
If you have a Google 2 XL chances are 100%.

It doesn't matter it's a Verizon phone either way the bootloader is locked like fort Knox. I ordered the Google branded unlocked version for this reason alone.

I may just stick with my s8+. It is a decent phone and there is a working root so far. I would like to compile android though (to be honest I am not sure what you can really do without bootloader access and roms as far as I am concerned).
Explain something to me; if you have Verizon, what possible advantage is there in ordering the Verizon version when you can get the unlocked version for the same price? If you put in your Verizon SIM in an unlocked version, does the bootloader all of a sudden get locked somehow?

No, the only difference between the two phones is Verizon locks the bootloader from the factory. Inserting a Verizon sim only triggers the play store to download 3 bloat apps which can be removed. The advantage I guess is that your getting device support / protection / warranty through Verizon in which case you are overnighted a new phone if anything goes wrong and can bring your problem to a local shop vs dealing with Google. Their deals and trade-in programs are much more robust than Google's as well. Bottom line for the average user that doesn't plan on rooting or installing custom ROMs it really makes no difference. All software updates come from Google not Verizon as well with the pixel phones so it makes no difference there.

If you purchased it from eBay, then your in a pickle. I have no idea what their policy is, or if the seller would even consider it. As far as bootloader unlocking it, I'm sure there are some folks that can/will do it for a fee, however, as the saying goes....buyer beware :fingers-crossed:
If "OEM unlocking" is greyed out, that means the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked. There is no way to hack a P2XL with locked BL to make it unlockable.
If you bought the P2XL directly from Google Store and you requested the "unlocked" version, then Google sent you the wrong one. Send it back and get the one you purchased.
If you bought it from Verizon store or Best Buy, those devices are *always* bootloader locked (buying directly from Google is the only way to get one with unlockable BL). You could return it but you will pay a restocking fee.
If you bought from an individual, you can try to get your money back. But it will be up to the seller to take it back.

Never saw what it's like on a Google phone before! I know now it IS the phone I want, & the Pixel 2 XL has dropped dramatically in price. Just make sure NEVER get a Verizon phone!!! If it wasn't for the "SHEEPLE", no way Verizon would last in a free market economy, with the way they cram restrictions down their customers throats....... js smh

Getting a VZW locked device, maybe not worth it if you are dead set on flashing custom stuff.
Getting TWO 2 XLs (selling one for $300-400) probably worth it unless you're dead set on flashing custom stuff.
Google offers the same financing that VZW has (24mo 0% interest) and for roughly the same monthly $$$ you'd pay at VZW, you get an unlocked 2 XL!
If you get the Google unlocked version, which can be used on Verizon's network; it's ABSOLUTELY worth it.
I took the Verizon sim card from my unlocked 6P and dropped it in my unlocked 2 XL, no issues!
The 2 XL was a great device before I rooted, flashed a cust kernel, and cust rom on it, and it's just that much better now that I'm running all the custom stuff.

I was trying to emphasize the futility of the verizon phone.
Yeah. I want to switch from VZW. I would have had the phone in my hand by now if it wasn't for the locked bootloader. I am just looking to the future. I have my Nexus
6 obviously unlocked running Android Oreo. With a locked bootloader once the official OTAs are done. Then your screwed. From Google play store the deal isn't as good. Sucks

its still a great device with a locked bootloader.
You're asking the wrong questions however.
If you dont have any intentions of rooting/custom ROM'ing or things of the like, there is no reason not to buy it from Verizon.
If you plan to, or even think you might want to do something custom with the device, then it would be better to buy from Google.
An unlockable bootloader for most people is irrelevant. Tech minded people (like those here on XDA) place a premium on it.
Whether or no it is 'worth' anything is only something you can answer.

I have an opportunity to pick up a Verizon 2 XL for $200. Only known issue is that the back left corner is shattered. I read you can replace that for under $20.
Screen is fine.
Do you think it would be worth picking it up as an intermediary and in a couple of months invest it towards a Google edition 2 XL (after repairing it)?

Really a big turn off for me...I'm not approved from Google to finance..but want the pixel XL 2...so..got me looking at other phones..does anyone know of any Verizon phones that can be bootloader unlocked..or at least rooted..I'd rather custom roms but root is a have to have...( Unlimited tethering)... looking at the note 8, s8+ or the Moto force 2?.. thanks for the help..if there was a way to bypass tethering restrictions on the Verizon pixel XL 2
Id get it in a heartbeat... thanks
