Model # Miss-match on ebay purchased phone - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

I bought a 16GB Motorola G6 Play off of ebay and it arrived today. I was verifying everything was in order when I noticed that the model number reads as XT1601, which correlates to the G4 Play. What's going on?

You can change a device's name easily. G6 play is xt19×× not 16.
Try an app that reads more than just the build prop to know for sure. Can't think of one right now, but someone will chime in. Sounds like you got had.
Maybe cpu-Z app
Sprint is xt1922-7 so...

Yep. Your right. I was tinkering with my wife's e4. It got stuck in my brain.

I'm still fighting an e4 myself. You're a braver man than me. Or you would be if I were a man. That thing gives me headaches.

I had to wrestle it away from my ex. He didn't like learning new phones. Went with the g5 plus. It's still an upgrade but felt similar I guess??
I'm using a z2 force And they're pretty bulletproof. After shattering an e4, e5 play and three g6 plays, one day I saw my ninety lb Husky step her big hoof on my screen. I was scared to look. It literally left a claw dent that never made it past the shatter screen. And it's taken everything I've thrown at it. Got it on eBay for 20 bucks
I'm so sorry for straying off topic
Op if you download this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.trinea.android.developertools
It'll give you a better readout of the phone, including the cores, processors, CPU.

Nice work on the phones, LoL. Now that's thorough destruction. 4 5 and 3 6's
She's on virgin Mobile so I gotta get her something in their lineup. Probably an e5 plus since she doesn't care about updates. I only root her phone for ad blocking and tethering.

It definitely looks to be the hardware/body of the G6 Play. Here are some additional pics. The only place I see mention of XT1922-7 is in the "Barcodes" section from fastboot mode.

Yeah that's a g6 play. Weird that it says that.

Mine says it correctly.

@jtroye32
My best guess is that someone stole it and used something like Sierra/Firehose to rewrite parts of the software to match a broken or out of service Moto G4 Play. I forget which parts you have to overwrite with the donor device, but you can basically make a stolen phone work legitimately like this. There isn't any other way I can think of, that would get your bootloader to say xt1609 under product/variant. Having Hynix ram looks off as well. I could be wrong but I think we all have Samsung dies. That leads me to believe a ram exploit was used to do it. I'd return it if possible. Have you tried activating it or unlocking the bootloader? That might give you some very interesting results.

I haven't tried activating it yet as I'm waiting for a SIM that I ordered. What interesting results might there be from a bootloader unlock?

Depending on what was changed inside that thing, Motorola might not have a key to it at all, or might give you an invalid one. I can only speculate. You have the first device like this that I've ever encountered in a direct sense. I've only read about them previously.
Another thought that came to mind, is that it could also be a forgery out of China. Those do happen, but I also think they wouldn't go through the trouble for a device like this. They're more likely to knock off something like a Galaxy S10 which would give them a much better profit.
What I really think happened is... It got stolen in South or Central America, sold to a cartel member for pennies on the dollar, they reprogrammed it, and it changed hands a few more times before showing up online. Motorola has a huge market share in those parts of the world and cartels have been known to do this. Most people don't root their phones, so most people would never know anything was even amiss. They'd buy and activate it, and never be any the wiser.

That means that if this happens I cannot for example install an update firmware on my phone which happens the same?

How Many Of You Actually Think HTC Will Fix Issues?

Oh no not another loose hinge thread!
I actually CAN live with it... I still think this phone is pretty awesome and I can just use my index fingers to keep it up when typing on my bed and it's not too ridiculously loose that it moves around by itself.
However, after hearing so many people say confidently that they'll eventually fix it... I wanna ask the question of how many of you actually think they'll address this issue.
I know some people say it's not even an issue the phone is suppose to be like that... some people will say that it isn't because some hinges aren't loose... and the other people that say that even it if isn't loose now it'll become loose.
Also the issue with the 4GB ROM... think that'll be address?
This phone isn't quite as popular as the iPhone and the issue at hand isn't quite as drastic as the loss of reception while holding the phone issue. Apple at first tried to play it off as "you guys aren't holding your phone right!" I'm pretty sure HTC would do the same thing. The phone isn't quite as main stream as the iPhone either so I for one really doubt for there to be a "fix". Not that I wouldn't want one... but just saying.
TL;DR - Who really think they'll fix the issues with the hinge and 4GB ROM
No and no.
I've begun to think a permanent root is also impossible. Without having to rip it apart or using that expensive wire and chip.

I thought the 4Gb thing had been pretty much put to rest? Nothing really to fix, just need real root so we can get rid of all the junk taking up most of that 4Gb. As far as the hinge issue, they aren't going to do anything. My wife is a T-Mobile employee and they are training people that the official stance is that the issue does not exist. The phones hinge is that way by design from HTC. Now their is plenty of proof out their that some are worse than others, but almost none are so bad that it actually hinders the use of the phone. Mine is loose, but I have gotten used to it. They have been pretty loose with their exchange requirements, so its really not hard to get a replacement with minimum hassle if you believe you have a real defect. But as far as official acknowledgement and "fixes " for these "issues", I think the chances are slim to none.

I'm not too saavy with all the mechanics and complicated code behind rooting but I hope that someone gets the permaroot down. If there's a will there's a will? *Shrugs* At least we have the VISIONary temp root for now. Hell if we're going to crack the phone open for a root I might just crack the whole phone down and try to make the hinge stronger just for kicks.

First... I like how it said Sent from my rooted space banana using telekinesis at the end. Second... I thought that T-Mobile would do that, the phone and issue just isn't too drastic enough for HTC and T-Mobile to fix such issues. As far as the 4GB is concerned, I read that it was some partition crap on another thread and probably misinterpreted that... but still I would like to believe that this phone would be capable of more space than 1.2-1.5GB's if the space was better utilized. Who knows, I hopped from a BlackBerry/iPhone platform to this so I'm still pretty new to all this.

To the OP regarding the hinge issue: invest 99 cents in some velcro tape and put just the tiniest bit between the screen and keyboard. Voila! Your keyboard stays open as you type hanging upside down like a winged nocturnal rodent. Then call HTC and offer your services as hardware engineer extraordinaire.

Well I'm not quite as bugged by it more that the point of the thread was to see who really thinks that HTC's going to address this issue.

If it is possible to update the stock ROM via OTA, then it's is possible to root it and install third party ROM.
All we need to wait is an OTA update...

Agree, but I have to say, I chuckled when I had this thought while reading the wiki etc.: What if they DID screw up and, in fact, the device CAN'T be updated due to a bug in the NAND locking? Honestly, that'd be just fine with me, because it'd mean that they can't screw up our temp root, and frankly, temp root plus wifi tether is all I need. I realize that others want more, and don't get me wrong, I'd certainly try a Cyanogen or other well-cooked ROM if it becomes possible.
What I *don't* want to have happen is an OTA that closes the temp root loophole, but still doesn't let us figure out how to do permanent root, effectively locking us out of the device.
Brad
All I can say is that my next phone will not be an HTC phone.
There's a way around everything just hasn't been figured out yet. The phone isn't even a month old yet. Give it some time. We WILL have perm root.

The velcro doesn't add any thickness at all the way I did it. But it does make the velcro sound when closing the keyboard, it's not really noticeable after the first few times. Will post pics when I get a chance.
edit: here are pics, not terribly difficult to figure out where to put the velcro to keep the keyboard open...

[Q] Galaxy Nexus (ENGINEERING) Model?

Hey Everyone... Originally when I got my GNEX, I could have sworn that when I tried to unlock/root it, it had been easier than a lot of the instructions, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. (I got it directly from a VZW wireless store) I think at this point, it was already unlocked. Now that I've changed phones, I wanted to prep this one for selling, and I was trying to follow instructions on how to reset/relock the phone, but it doesn't seem to let me lock it with the fastboot oem lock commands... but if this is an engineering build, should I even bother? Or can I sell it as is and just state factory unlocked?
Here is an image of my "About Phone" after flashing back the google images that I downloaded from here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I tried -looking- for a factory unlocked CDMA version to judge it against, and can't even seem to find any, am I just missing something? Are people selling them somewhere else?
You won't find a "Factory Unlocked" model, AFAIK they don't make them. What you have is somewhat unique, although not that useful since it's a Nexus device. If you want more info on what exactly you have this thread has a decent overview if you read the first 2 pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461386 Bottom line, your fine to sell it as is.
To the right person you will get more just because it is an engineering model! If I were you I would bank on that!!

I thought about that too when I first read the post. But, since this is a Nexus device to begin with, does that really get you anything?
I doubt it gets you anything but I want one lol. I'd pay maybe $20 more than a normal one but beyond that I'd get a stock. Someone may want it just to have it like me though.

If its rare people will pay, just due to the fact that no one else can get it.
I personally am the type of person you want to sell this to. I buy tons of stuff for hundreds more just because I collect tech.
***Speaking of which, if anyone knows someone that owns an original 20gb PS3 I am looking to spend $400 or more depending on condition. Been looking for 3 years. Also looking for a copy of Super Metroid for SNES, I`ll pay $60 with out box, $100 in box***
Anyways yeah, if I didn`t already own a Galaxy Nexus and was not in the process of looking for a Galaxy S2 White (perferably from France to use here in Canada) I`d pay around $800 easy.

No I don't sorry.
Only reason I threw out the $800 number is because, really its not that much more you'd pay buying a "normal" phone really.
I still remember paying something like $700 after tax for the Xperia x10 (ouch bad device) and another $700 for the Xperia Arc (Better device but still too much IMO)
$800 is not that big of a jump, and you are getting something truly unique.
***On a side note: I bought the Xperia x10 and my wife's first iphone, the white 3GS the same day...I think the total was like $1400. Imagine my surprise learning my brand new "latest tech" android didn't support multitouch....mmm still feel that burn! Oh well I guess 2 finger touch ended up being supported later, but by then I was on the Samsung Captivate. Loved the Captivate!***

Used daily for about 3 weeks daily, with a screen protector installed @ verizon when I bought it. Somehow it still managed to get a tiny line in it near the front camera in the upper right... you have to have the light hit it just right to see it, I tried getting it in the pictures here but could not. I took the screen protector off now to show how clean the real screen is, there's some dust on it though.
The pictures came out a bit too big that I'd want to post here, you can see them here:

I still have the original box and books, but am not sure which usb cable or where the actual wall wart is right now that came with it.

Oh, My God! I'm getting the update! (NOT!)

I just called AT&T and gave them hell about the lack of progress on the Marshmallow update. Asked how much it would cost to close my account. Miraculously; I was forwarded to a tech support person with an IQ just North of a bedroom slipper. She forced the update to my phone. I'm past the download and my apps are optimizing. Incredible! Before I post, I'm going to wait to be sure, but it looks like I'm getting the Big M! 8 more apps to go! 1 more. Holding breath. BS! Don't know what it actually did, but still on 5.11. Time for the big guns. Stay tuned.
Just north of a bedroom slipper. Thats hilarious.
??????
Big News! AT&T Are Liars!
I called back and spoke to another Golgi apparatus who denied that they ever said that. My, how his toned changed when I started playing back the conversation from Total Recall. He proceeded to tell me that I could pay an ETF of $350.00. I told him that based on the recorded lies that they told me; I DARED them to try to collect. Never mind - just more AT&T BS. {Sigh!}
Sorry. "Just North of a bedroom slipper" and "Golgi apparatus" were complements for these oxygen thieves. Maggots is placing them in high regard. AT&T customer since 1985, and this is how I'm treated? I'm dropping them like a used rubber. Don't have any better "smoking gun" solutions since I travel internationally a good bit; but, I'll cut off my nose to spite AT&T at this point. (Extremely foul language omitted)
Sometimes I think to my self, how fun would of been if this device would of been root able? Big-time developers would be on this specific forum. Idk but lately I've been complementing on wether to give att another chance or split to tmobile

Sorry that happened, it's the worst when you get your hopes up only to have them dashed.
Highly unlikely that att would push out an update to a single user, some of us have been trying to get beta releases for years. Unfortunately, we just have to wait.
So help me; she SWORE that they were already rolling it out (another lie), but I wasn't in the queue yet, and I'd be receiving it soon. She was such a polished liar that it takes my breath away. Then, she gave me the schmoozing touch by saying "Well, you're such a valued customer that I'm going to go ahead and push it to your phone." Eloquent liar. She said "Look at the top of your screen and tell me what you see?" I saw the diagonal arrows that only mean one thing. I was ecstatic! I told her: " I can't believe you were able to do it that fast!" She poured it on even thicker by saying "Now, wait with me for a little bit to make sure it goes through." Sucker!!! I waited until it had gotten to the 100% point and was prompted by the phone to end my call to finish the update. I thanked her profusely, and hung up.
I'm sure they were slapping their knees after I got off the phone with them. The phone went through the expected gyrations with the progress bar, optimizing apps, rebooting, etc. When it finished recycling; there was the all too familiar screen again. My heart was beating like a rabbits. I went to the phone info, and sure enough... Still Lollipop! SUCKER! I felt like Curly from The Three Stooges after Moe just double poked him in the eyes.
Now; I'm pissed. But, being the weekend, I realize that the only person to answer their phone is Hajji over in India, so that's a waste of time. So; my choices are: Stay with AT&T and continue to have nearly seamless international roaming, or cut my throat and go with Verizon - just to match my domestic coverage - (Same high price, same obstinance, but little to no international coverage, same hardware restrictions), or go with a lone wolf like T-Mobile - or worse - Sprint.
Deflated.
stay with At&t but never buy phones from them. nexus is the way to go my friend.
OP, I honestly cannot tell if you are for real.
Oh; trust me; I'm real. And, everything - virtually everything happened exactly the way I said it. It would be hard to make that one up.
As for the Nexus; I've considered that. Perhaps my timing's been bad, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the Nexus phones that I've seen. Especially without Mini-SD cards. It seems like there's always some stranglehold. I've been a Sammy fan for about 4 years now. The previous one was the Note 3 that I purchased outright from AT&T. Root eventually made it's way to it, but I jumped when the Note 5 came out without the SD card slot, and no removable battery. I panicked and snatched up the Note 4. Big mistake.
I wish there was a way to purchase an unlocked, unbranded Samsung Note that would work seamlessly on AT&T, allow updates without the bloat, and let me do what I wanted to do with what I bought. It defies logic.

Likely has no warranty I the states, and difficult to get, many are sold as 910f but are 910a with a system mod applied via odin to make it look like an 910f...
OK, I'll bite. You really didn't know that the ATT associates don't know when any update will occur? You really wasted all this time and energy and anger over this? That is why I smell a troll; everyone knows this, and it has been reiterated a thousand times. The fact is they simply do not know.
Think what you want. I'm not trying to impress you or anyone else. I'm venting my frustration and experience.
Now; if she'd told me that the update would hit at a certain time; I'd have taken it with a grain of salt. But, the way she schmoozed me; I bought hook, line, and sinker. Not to mention all of the speculation on this board that the update was immanent; I thought I'd hit the goldmine. That's what pisses me off. I'll be more than happy to post the recording (~10MB) of the 47 minute conversation - if you have the time to waste listening to it.
And, no; I'm not going to roll the dice on an international - or any other illegitimate phone - in the hopes that I can get what I paid for. That's just another frustration. It would be like buying a fancy Dell computer with a 3TB HD, but they installed 1.5TB of bloatware on the drive and if you took it off; your computer would crash.
OK, I'm done.
I have been an AT&T customer since 96. My first smartphone was the Sony x10a, loved it. Then I saw an ad in a magazine for the ion lt28at. I knew 6 months before the 6 AT&T employees(1 per month) that AT&T was getting it. I "chat" with AT&T about every 2 weeks to see if there's any info when updates are supposed to be released. Occasionally one will act like they have the inside scoop, usually, like with the ion, they're as clueless as we are. I fallen victim to false hope, I'm sure many of us have. Yes, AT&T sucks when it comes to updates and bloat, but I will tell you this, every single time I've had an issue they've done everything they can to make me happy. To me that goes a long way towards keeping my brand loyalty. AT&T is a pretty solid company and would have to do something much worse than delaying updates to lose my business.

yes they can push updates to individual devices, because i called as asked to have that done with the latest security patch, and the person asked me for my IMEI and told me it would take a couple of hours, sure enough within that time I had the notification for the security update.

I agree. I have a contract that was supposed to allow me to upgrade phones every two years. I went in and was told that they don't do upgrades anymore even if it is in your contract. Which means I have to pay that price on my bill and not get the benefit of it. They very eagerly offered to take that off my bill but it would kill my unlimited data. Why in the hell would I buy a phone from them if I can get one that is not locked down for the same price?

It's a dead topic in my opinion. We all know that AT&T's customer service is horrible and will tell you anything. What I found so insulting was the level of deceit that they went to convince me that I was going to get the update. Shouldn't be surprised. That's why I record theirs and a few other companies phone calls to confront them when they don't live up to what was promised. I still find it incredible!
So; I'm stuck with AT&T, or another carrier that's as bad or worse. It's a shame. I used to be able to count on AT&T as fulfilling their promises. My experience over the past couple of years is that you roll the dice, and HOPE you get what was promised. I suppose that's the only option. Their management could care less.
I'm done with this topic. Feel free to rant - which was my purpose - it seems to have no effect on them. They know your options are limited.

Why wont you go buy a T-mobile phone and unlock the sim for use on at&t. Get your root, custom roms, updates.... i have a t-mobile Samsung s5 also Note 4 and finally Note Edge, all rooted and custom roms. All working on AT&T straight talk network. I can update to custom MM right now if i wished.

Will i be "safe" if i get the LG G4?

Im looking to get the LG G4 soon. Being a fan of Samsung products im just looking for something different.. After browsing the web looking at reviews and specs i do think id enjoy the g4. My biggest concern is this "bootloop" issue. It seems that it has happened to quite a few people. Since this a hardware issue, buying a phone just to have to send it for repairs is not something i want to do. Are phones manufactured after a certain date free of this problem? How many people are having this issue compared to the ones who aren't? Is the phone worth the hassle of worrying? What are your experiences with this issue?
From what ive seen 505 506 serial num are affected and harware revision 1.0.
I cant find a straight answer on what my exact serial is. But i have hw rev 1.1 and i havent seen any of my 511 suposed serial bootloop yet

My SN 507 died a couple of days ago, just sent it off, but not a happy bunny.
Just to add in, if you want something that plays games fairly smoothly then this device is a big no no, it runs crap. if it's just for general use like browsing etc then it would be fine.
Fell out of love with my G4.

I don't really play heavy games that are cpu or gpu intensive.. Id rather play on PC or console lol. I do play things like the sims free play. Family guy. Things like that. My other option on my budget was to get the galaxy s5. Getting tired of Samsung though

Ah well I don't play any intensive games as such, Sim City Buildit is the latest one I play and it is very choppy on the G4. My Nexus 7 2013 and my Galaxy S4 play it much smoother! I wanted a change from Samsung but this whole experience with LG has really put me off, I only had my phone since December.

on mine tmobile theres no shiny stickers.. seems like its refurbished... cause they put on those stickers to know when you open the phone... and deny you warrranty...
Only tamper agents lg uses is moisture detectors no void stickers on screws
These are the two stickers i have on my H815 ..i dont know what they mean my best guess is maybe they were on local warranty in Taiwan...because the phone doesnt feel refurbished at all if its refurbished that it means is it repaired ?

Blocking updated?

I have a "fixed" Note 7 and I understand I have to turn it in but I want to wait as long as I can. I know I seen on here a way to block OTA updates. Something about freezing system apps? I wan't to block any battery crippling updates Samsung puts out. I just want to wait to see if I can make it till S8 comes out.
It isn't fixed. Just send it back. Seriously.
Disabling these bottom four will end future updates.

You can do all seven but the bottom for is the main one you want to disable.
I am on Verizon and do not have some of the ones that you are showing that are checked in Package Disabler Pro. Anyone on Verizon have these to disable future updates?

I had all of those disabled at AT&T and many more (lessons learned from from the note 5) . Guess what, they pushed the update anyway in the middle of the night with no prompt that will let me cancel.
also install a firewall just in case.
its far fetched to think samy could have their system apps pass on/tunnel your personal data via other innocent apps (im definitely sure google is doing it to ensure they gather as much data from us as possible). if I'm wrong, at least a firewall saves you on wireless 4g data charges
This is the only thing we can do if we want to keep the phone, if it goes through then it will force the keepers to switch if it doesn't we'll see how long we can last without updated/support.

Yes I did. Had the note 5 remember?
It was crazy scary, especially when the phone turned blue and AT&T logo popped out without a warning.
It was doing something for nearly 10-20 minutes with a bar on the bottom of the screen (so I knew it was doing something).
it was in recovery mode and did not have the running android logo (like updates usually do).
I was worried to turn it off cause I did not want my phone to be bricked. When it turned back on I got the message that I must return the phone (and it kept of popping every time I charged it).
So, I am 100% positive that AT&T, and Samsung can do what they want.
Also, yesterday before I returned the phone my line got suspended. But my line is a corporate line so the company just decided to force me to return it.
damn, that's dodgy.
Ridiculous people are doing this, why not turn the damn thing in seriously? Its not going to be supported by samsung or 3rd party developers.
Samsung will almost certainly release something just as good hardware wise if not better in the future.
I just can't figure out why some of you are so insistent on keeping an unsupported and dangerous phone.

Yet another policeman. How the **** do you know if there's anything wrong with his or not. This is getting REALLY tedious.
FWIW, having wiped my Note 7 and boxed it up, I've changed my mind. I am keeping it for a month or two to see what pans out, news of S8 availability, take a look at the Pixel etc.
There's no rush to get them swapped and I not could give a pico-sh1t about the "explosion" risk. Seriously when ZERO have had any issues in the UK. None, nil, nada. Why would anyone be so concerned. Sure there may be a small risk but let's keep this in perspective, please.

No not at all, just not a complete moron who thinks he knows better than the multi billion dollar company (with people way way smarter than any of us) who would have done anything in their power to make sure that this didn't happen. You think they would have stopped production for something that's easily fixed? Come on, use your brain!
How do I know if there's anything wrong with his or not? I don't - nobody does - that's the problem... duh? No one can surely say that it will or won't blow up at any time, and you've got hundreds of these idiots going 'hmm, i know better than samsung, mines cool for now, therefore its always gonna be fine'
And thereby not only putting their own selfish ass at risk, but other people who they might be around at that time, god forbid it did explode/set on fire.
It's ridiculous. This whole thing should never have happened, but people insisting on keeping something that is known to randomly (until they can reproduce it, unless they already have and aren't disclosing it) set on fire, and that is just complete stupidity, and nothing else.

Yawn. It was a no brainer for Samsung to discontinue it. They could be 100% confident they would have many more fires and other issues.
Any single user can be 99.99% confident they will not.
If you don't get that, I suggest you have a quick read up on probabilities 101.
@Chippy_boy dont waste your energy man, there will always be people who are just upset in general... they start the fire the moment they hear someone scream witch just continue to help like minded others and ignore their verbal traps, it'll eat them up inside every time they come back here... otherwise they wouldn't come back to troll about a phone they don't have
