Lineage OS 14.1 encryption leads to bootloop, still no solution ? - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Dear Fellow Android users,
I have a freshly rooted Samsung A300FU with a freshly installed LineageOS 14.1 following those guidelines : https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa.../how-to-root-twpr-flash-a300fu-a300y-t3494362
All went up fine except one detail that is quite important : It seems I can't encrypt my phone using the android option for that.
When I tried, I ended up in the exact same situation as those two situations :
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/173019/lineage-os-encrypt-phone-bootloop
https://www.bountysource.com/issues/45527123-encrypting-device-fails-and-leads-to-boot-loop
i.e. Launching encryption process, phone reboot, lineage os Logo moving, then bootloop with samsung logo appearing again and again. I could recover my phone thanks to backup and a format action from recovery.
I wanted to try the painful solution advised in those post I linked, i.e. installing CM13, encryption, part wipe, restore my lineage backup but the problem is I can't find any CM13 rom for my exact device model (A300FU). It may not be wise to try with one for Samsung A300F although just one letter is changing...
So I tried this solution using the Lineageos 15.1 that is available for my device. but Encryption didn't work as well on 15.1. Not a bootloop though, just a quite quick reboot without any thing changed. I restored my 14.1 and tried again to encrypt. Here again no bootloop, just a fast reboot without anything changed.
Well, you, reader, are my last chance because I can't see anything else I could safely do :Is there any other way to encrypt my phone for the nice lineageOS14.1 I have already nicely tuned ?
Thank you very much in advance !

Still anyone can help me on this ?

Can I suggest posting in the A3 forum? You will get more accurate support from owners and Devs of that device over there. Sorry I can't be of any help with your issue. Good luck finding a solution

Can i simply encrypt my phone again without dataloss?

Hello, after i got my op3 i instant decrypted it with fastboot and installed freedomos because i heard there could be problems with rooting etc.
But now i heard, that you can use Customroms and twrp even with encrypted storage, what i find really nice so thiefes can't access my data easily.
Now the question is, can i simply encrypt my device in settings -> security with a password and can i simply enter the password in twrp then, and is the behavior the same as the forced encryption on stock oxy?
Also i have another problem, i cant use cm13, cm14 and resurrectionremix, because it stucks on the op logo on boot. I read that this because the data is decrypted. Will encryption fix this problem or do i have to do the method2 of the unbrick guide to fix it? Well, i can just use my nandroid restored freedomOS rom at the moment, any other roms results in a bootfreeze, even if i update freedomos.
Best regards and thanks for your help guys :fingers-crossed:

Lineage/CyanogenMod requires password on boot

Hello all!
So I've been rooting and installing custom ROMs on my Android phones since getting started on my Galaxy S2 back in the day, and as it stands I've never encountered such an annoying roadblock as I've been forced to deal with over the past few days.
I just got a new HTC 10, and quickly went ahead and rooted my phone to get a custom ROM on there. The ROM seemed to boot fine, but the home button wasn't working and I had forgotten to download and install GApps. The other problem was, upon flashing the new LineageOS, TWRP would not recognize any files whatsoever on my device--including the backup I had made. So, I went ahead and flashed the latest RUU and returned to stock. After realizing the RUU is Nougat firmware, I got the latest TWRP and went ahead to try and reinstall Lineage again.
This time, however, the phone decided to stop on a screen asking for a password before it fully boots. I've tried this with every ROM I've installed and every time it will ask for a password. Boot into Recovery, and it will ask for a password there and have all my files hidden, keeping me from doing anything short of a re-flashing my RUU to return to stock. I know these ROMs evidently encrypt your phone during first boot, but I'm at a loss for info on what I'm apparently doing wrong to cause this issue.
Is this an Android N issue? On M, I was able to boot into Lineage, though TWRP still had the file issue. Anyways, whatever help would be fully appreciated. Since I'm a new user I wasn't able to inquire directly on the LineageOS thread, and so deferred to Q&A.
EDIT:
I've solved the issue. After re-flashing the RUU, flashing TWRP, and re-rooting over and over, I figured out what seemed to be going on.
In case anyone else has the same problem as me, here was my solution:
Starting from stock, I went ahead and flashed my phone with the latest TWRP compatible with N (3.0.3.0 at this current time). Afterwards I flashed LineageOS and GApps. As usual, upon reboot, the phone needed a password to get in. So, I rebooted to Recovery, which also required a password. I hit cancel, wiped the phone with a factory reset, formatted all data, and restarted. This did the trick, and I've been running LineageOS 7.1 with no problems whatsoever!
Which version of TWRP are you using at the moment. If you're on N firmware I'd recommend to use 3.0.3-0, that is to be found on the download tab of the TWRP thread.

Installing cm will encrypt your device, was you encrypted previously? Then you would have created a password to access your device.
In my case, I formatted data and then flashed my sense rom (venom) I chose not to encrypt, cm doesn't give this option when you flash it so you have no choice at the time. So if you don't have the password and the device has been encrypted you'd have to format data, don't jump into that just yet though.
Unless someone else knows a way around that, personally I couldn't. However I did have a rom installed so I could boot the rom and back up my data once in the OS. Then format (not wipe) and then reinstall the rom.
Sounds confusing, to be sure we need more info from you.
Do you have an operating system at the moment? If you do then back up your data so that's safe.
Do you know the password to decrypt your phone??

I'm running 3.0.3.0. I had a problem after re-flashing my RUU where TWRP wouldn't boot, but I quickly realized this was due to using an M compatible TWRP with the new firmware.

Turns out formatting the data was the solution. Thankfully this phone is brand new, so there was no data to lose.
As for why Cyanogen and Lineage automatically encrypt without giving some sort of default password, I have no idea...
Thanks for the help, though!

Could have thought of that myself. Encryption used by Cyanogen/Lineage is different to HTCs encryption used on Sense based ROMs. Thanks for your feedback.

There is no password and I've had it out in the cm thread, apparently it's common knowledge, which we've both found out its not, there is no password either so you did what was required.
Also, click thanks instead of saying mate [emoji6]
Glad you're back up and running.
thanks had same issue when installing Lineage 14.1 nightly on my HTC 10 today, which already had twrp on it and the stock rom - your solution worked.
i.e.
turn off device
hold volume down while pressing power for few seconds
choose reboot to bootloader from menu
choose boot to recovery mode
hit cancel when prompted for password
choose wipe from twrp, use default options
reboot
no more password prompt.

Google-free ROM with working phone encryption wanted

Hi,
I have a LG G4 and use the stock ROM but want to get rid of google's observation and bloatware. I am looking for a custom ROM that focuses on privacy and runs stable on the LG G4.
It must
- be usable without Google
- provide a working full-phone encryption + SD card encryption like the stock ROM does
- provide fast updates (my stock rom has security level january 17 which is ridiculous)
I already tried LineageOS with the newest version and it worked well with one exception: I could not encrypt my phone. I tried it several times but I either got into a boot loop or Lineage OS booted but all my preferences and apps were lost (like I did a factory reset, but I didn't). When I then started TWRP recovery it asked me for my password and declined it altough it was 100% correct. The only possibility was to wipe all data and install LineageOS again. Very strange: I could also "encrypt" my phone without providing a PIN, password or something else. I would expect an error message to be displayed but there was none.
I also tried Ressurection Remix but the encryption failed as well (boot loop after encryption finished).
Could it be that TWRP causes these problems? Has anyone successfully intalled a custom ROM and encrypted the LG G4? Maybe another ROM? I am very open for new suggestions
For now I had to reinstall the stock ROM because that's the only way I can encrypt my phone...
Regards

Does nobody care for encryption?
1984 is real, how can somebody just don't care?
How can encryption protect your privacy?
But you can use stock rom too.
Just reset phone, set it up without google account (you have to delete the accout before resetting fyi)
root it, use afwall and jdisable the common lg and google stuff.
Use floss open source apps from froid.
Thats it.
If you want to use stuff like network location without gapps the you have to use LOS. If you want more google stuff without google you have to use crdroid rom.
But I already tried and its a pain on the ass.
Lol yes encryption is something where many people say it's completely useless! I love those discussions where people say why do you care about encryption? Well it's their fault not mine I encrypt everything and always that's why I build TWRP with decryption support because no one else cares.
I use RR marshmallow plus FDE but I am about to switch to LOS 13 because of the security patches inside
Iirc (it's more than 1 year ago) it was a little bit tricky to set up because as you already noted nobody cares about encryption! everything like rooting or custom ROMs have all one thing in mind disable encryption and that's what's happening when you install root or when you use a custom ROM normally.
If you can wait until I have switched to LOS I could tell you more but I have no time frame for this so if you don't want to wait you should investigate the fstab file and if you're using Super su the installer scripts as well
.

Updates Mid 2018
Hi,
as I had no success last year when I wrote this post, I lost it out of sight. Now I would like to give it another try.
Unfortunately I cannot find any custom ROM with a current version that also supports LG G4. LineageOS supports a lot of phones but no G4, the same for RR OS.
Is there another alternative that officially supports LG G4 and also works with encryption?
If not, I think it is time to move from my loved G4 to another phone. I do not feel comfortable with a phone that got no updates for almost two years. This time, I would directly focus on finding a phone that gets regular updates (like the new Nokias, as far as I know) or has good support for custom ROMs (like Nexus/Pixel). Are there any suggestions for a phone that is comparable to my G4 (I especially love the camera) but supports current custom ROMs or has regular updates from the manufacturer?
Looking forward to any recommendations!

Officially - cypher os supports your G4
Unofficially (but maintained by myself, @steadfasterX and @kessaras) you can choose from LineageOS, AICP, Cypher (newer versions with more patches - @kessaras is also the official Cypher maintainer so no difference there) and RR
Anything Oreo supports encryption - anything nougat doesn't
However, Oreo has a bug with BT calling - Calling through a BT headset doesn't work

Lineage OS 15.1 and encryption

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if I can use device encryption in Lineage OS 15.1.
I currently have TWRP 3.2.2-0 installed on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus (kccat6).
Can TWRP 3.2.2-0 decrypt Lineage OS ?
By the past, I have seen many posts on forum, telling that they had trouble with the encryption or when they wanted to update LineageOS (which is currently in Nightly phase... so where updates can be important).
Thank you in advance for your answers !
Yes you can, but you have to update your TWRP to the latest version (3.2.3-0), they fixed the automatic installing of OTA zips on encrypted devices
Thanks lucaslbbh. So I made it. I was astonished to see that the process lasted only 9 min... Unfortunately, my phone was unable to start after that (bootloop).
I came back to TWRP, entered my password and restored my Nandroid backup.
Surprinsgly, it kept the encryption : I have to enter my PIN for each startup, and when I want to enter in TWRP. In the security menu, it's said it's encrypted.
Is it possible ?

Help needed for Treble Roms

Hey guys,
I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. I can't get any treble rom to work. I have four scenarios:
1. Rom don't get over Sony logo.
2. Rom don't get over bootlogo of the rom.
3. Rom boots (Descendant, Havoc), but I have no Wifi (Mac 02:00:00...)
4. Only roms by MartinX work, but fingerprint sensor is really Bad.
What can I do? What is the correct sequence of flashing the different images? Why and when do I need them?
Hope someone can help. I am on firmware 52.0.A.11.32
I was able to use GSI rom's by following the guide here in first post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz2/how-to/gsi-roms-installation-guide-t3914603
I attached a pic (last one is RR) with the rom's i booted successfully. But it was some time ago, when i did that, so i can't say something about the current GSI's.
Thank you for your answer!
Btw I tried a few hours yesterday but I did not had any success.
Like i said, i have not tried current GSI's.
Maybe they have to be permissive to boot...?
Hi @JimmyTheFirst, did you manage to boot any GSI/Treble system on XZ2C? I try to flash RR but I get the same problems as you.
I managed to boot Havoc 2.6. All above don't work for me. Descendant and Pixel Experience also works, but nö ViperOs Or RR.
In this moment I'm waiting for a new update of Pixel Experience, but I think it could take some weeks.
