Does your (Jeter) Moto G6 play Lag & stutter when scrolling? - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

I have a Boost Moto 6 play aka: Jeter
These questions are ONLY for someone else who owns a Boost or Sprint Moto G6 play because the specs are VERY different from other variants of this name phone.
My question is this: Does your phone lag and stutter quite a bit? Because mine did when I got it and it was on 8.0 and I haven't done anything but ota to 9.0 and it's still laggy and stutters. VERY noticeable!!!!
I came from an old LG stylo 2 plus on 7.12 Nougat and it's night and day different! My stylo is smooth as **** compared to this!
My other question is are you rooted and using a rom and if so If you had lag before did it improve drastically after you installed a rom and got all the Moto & Boost app crap off? I need to know these two things please when someone gets a chance.
Thanks in advance!

I'm rooted, debloated, running stock 9.0 and I have no lag at all. I used to have it bad on Oreo though. If you did not factory reset after updating to Pie, I'd definitely do that. Every GSI I've flashed thus far has had horrible scroll lag, and sometimes bad lag opening settings and Bluetooth. The only exception to this was AOSiP, but the problem with that one is, it'll only read an external sdcard that's formatted as fat32, which kills the ability to store 4gb+ files. Stock uses exfat, which doesn't have that limitation.

This information is very much appreciated!!! I was just about to factory reset because I originally didn't after I updated to 9.0 but I did few hours ago and I can't tell if it made a difference or not but I think it did slightly. I have seven days before I can't take it back and swap out for another phone so I still have a few days. I just couldn't grab a Stylo 4 knowing that device will probably never see root due to the locked bootloader on every model. I assumed this device had same specs as original Moto g6 play, 3gb ram and so on and when I was at Boost store they shook their head when I mentioned something about it. So I get home only to find it has 2 gb ram and a quad 1.4 CPU. Again thanks for sharing the info. It is extremely helpful!

Mine doesn't lag either. Every now and then if I have a ton of apps open, it struggles a bit. That's it.
Rooted with latest magisk. Mildly debloated. Mostly the crap in OEM partition. Facebook is the worst offender.
You may have a defective unit.

I'm stock ota 9.0 Boost and I did a factory reset and deleted every app I could without being rooted.
I get a pause when I select random things at times. Like when I touch an app icon or go to settings, not always but a few times a day it will pause for maybe 2 seconds. Very noticeable! My unit did appear to be new packaging wise anyway when I got it.
I believe once I disable encryption and delete every app on here except playstore and a few others it will be much better. I appreciate you guys help and information very much!! I'll more than likely keep it. Maybe it's my service where I'm located. I seem to have a good signal though. I am very much used to metro pcs and they were very good where I am located. I'm going to put on lte discovery and watch my data connection and see if anything is weird there. Again thanks for the help!

Anybody have a list of apps that can be deleted. I want all this **** gone. ? Just unlocked my bootloader and rooted via magisk at 5am from my old Samsung on5 using Linux Ubuntu from my phone using otg. It was super cool af! I may do a video some day. But yeah anyone have a list of crap they deleted? I'm 90% there now just wanted to make sure I don't wipe something out that the stupid phone needs. Thanks in advance. ??
Ps: After deleting many bloat apps and decrypting my phone shows little to no lag whatsoever. They (Boost) really really packed this thing down with tons of trash apps. I had to do a backup of what I had gutted thus far so I can come back some day and finish when I have more time. On to the gsi crack flashing I go. Onward. ??

[Q] I love my g3, but I cant stand the lag. What should I do?

I preordered my at&t lg g3 about a month ago with extremely high hopes, and coming from a jailbroken iPhone 5. Compared to it the UI functionality, battery life, screen resolution, openness of android, subpar camera quality, and many other features made me absolutely swoon over how amazing it was compared to that iPhone garbage. I have one really big problem with it though. Straight out of the box when I revived my lg, I have noticed major ui and app lag. Even after a month, the lag has remained persistent, even after many pointless factory reset and screwing around online to try to find a fix for the lag. I did root this phone, but I know good as well that rooting it did not do anything too the device to affect performance. I just installed some xposed modules such as removing the d delay between taking screenshots, the g3 tweaksbox from the play store (which I highly recommend paying 1.50 for three full version, it's Amazing), and getting rid of ads. The funny thing is, I expected my g3 to perform on par with smartphones with identical specifications, (snapdragon 801, krait 400, 3gb ram, 32gb memory). My brother has a galaxy s5, and I've run many tests between my phone and his, like app performance in games, opening/closing apps, antutu benchmarks, overall ui performance, and his phone basically destroys all off those tests against my phone. WHY?? I do realise that yes, the qhd screen does require more raw performance compared to fhd (I think I read somewhere it was 15%?), but most apps aren't optimised for qhd and put themselves to fhd, so why would a game like fruit ninja run at like 20 fps at fhd on my g3, and 60 fps on the s5, which is also rooted with the same amount of modules? And it's not just arcade fruit ninja either, games like temple run 2 lag when you get to a higher score, apps like tinberman open faster on my jailbroke iPhone 5 then my g3, and sometimes simple arcade games like don't touch the spikes have an occasiaonal stutter when you hit a spike, or just playing in general. I have also seen youtube videos of the g3 vs the s5 with opening apps and app performance, and they perform THE SAME! Plus the Ui didn't lag on YouTube either, my Ui scrolling between app pages (that's the Ui I'm mostly talking about, sometimes I also get lag in the stock browser and messaging app, but that's a different story) dips far below 30 fps, I would be able to tell if it was on YouTube because of the frame rate cap. I'm just fed up with it. I truly do love it though, in my opinion in has the best take on 4.4 kitkat I've seen, and coming from ios I still consider this ROM clean. Now for you, the xda forum what do you think I should do about my problem? I do not want any other phone but the g3. Should I unroot and flash stock Rom back onto my device and take it to at&t? I got this phone through the at&t next plan, so I'm not sure how they deal with warranties. Maybe they would give me a new device if I showed them the problems with it? I am running kitkat 4.4.2 if that helps.
Do what I did where.
Install the leaked 10j, remove the stock launcher and use nova. Also I you want it to fly do the high temp pro and thermal daemon mitigation mod. Be happy.
Like tntgdh I also put nova launcher and there is a little trick I use sony z2 live wallpaper from wssabi and set it to 60FPS. Phone is extra smooth. Under transittion effect od home screen i choose none or you can say generic google.

You should notice smaller app load times, faster boot ups, and better battery if you switch to ART. However, Xposed currently doesn't support it, so you would have to disable it until Android L came along.

Although there are many people out there who swear switching to ART does very little in terms of performance, I think it helps ALOT. Once i switched to ART i noticed the little stutters and little lags go away. My phone feels buttery smooth now. I also use nova launcher which is my launcher of choice, and it also performs buttery. I am very satisfied with its performance. Some may say I am just experiencing a placebo effect, but I think not.

Oh yeah it makes a difference for me too. I Decided to try Xposed after I changed to arp, so it reverted to dalvik. What a difference! I instantly noticed. So I ditched Xposed for now until it had support for arp.
One major thing was to install the 10j.
If you want something that will help a lot.. Install the 10j and use arp... Then if you wanna go further install nova and do the thermal mods.

*RANT* AAARRRRGGGG!!!! Curse you stock lollipop note 4

(I know there isnt any solution except to root and flash to a custom, just ranting. Thanks ahead to those who dont flame me)
Hey guys,
its been some time since my last post and boy is this one a headache. as many of you know the 5.0.1 update got rolled out to a major portion of note 4 devices recently. Me being one of them as of yesterday. Since I made the bad decision to click update I have had nothing but issues. Battery life, overall performance and graphics have taken heavy hits. My gear 2 only unlocked my phone and randomly dialed ppl maybe 2 times a day before now its 15. I mean i called my ex at 3am.....long story but hell! its gotten to be a huge headache. The chromecast refuses to connect or be setup by my note 4. It insists that theres some new wifi network issue that wasnt there the night before when I casted some youtube to the tv. My gear 2 has also had constant connection issues, not nearly the range it had before.
The most annoying issue which is also related to the excessive pocket dials is that everytime I pick up(and even when its just laying there not being touched) my phone and unlock it, it immediately takes me to the phone/contacts. No pressing anything, no swiping, just looking at the screen as i pick up the phone some how indicates that I was finished with whatever I was doing before and want to suddenly call someone up. So it doesnt matter what I do this thing is just being difficult. The new phone pop up is a nightmare I somehow hung up on 3 ppl today while just holding it against me ear, wasnt even resting on my shoulder.
now excuse me while i eat some cheese....
Factory reset and you'll find it smoother, quicker and less buggy.
The user file system is mixed lollipop and KitKat until you do that. Try that if wipe, root and custom is not your thing.

Ya i figured as much. thanks for the reply
actually all you have to do is clear the cache and it stablizes.. But i do feel the Note 4 is has more hicups with the 5.0.1 update.
i just have not found a ROM yet that i want to flash. Still waiting for the Cyanogen official.
All lollipop roms have issuses with performance. My nexus 6 was really buggy to the point i sold it and picked up a lg g flex 2 running 5.0.1 and it was slower than my g3. So far after selling that device and getting the note 4 the note 4 with lolipop seem the most fluid out of the bunch. It's gonna take several updated for this lolipop os to run like kit kat. Maybe take years.
Maybe when 5.1 comes they fixed alot

D851 worth getting today?

Hey guys, I'm not a must have flagship device or a crazy spender when it comes to phones. I tend to lean towards features, and developer support when it comes to phones. I'm still using the LG Optimus G e970 that I bought 2 years ago, and I think it's time for a change. The D851 has everything I'm looking for at a decent price, but I'm worried now after reading so many people are having boot loops, wifi issues, etc. Would it be a bad decision to buy this phone since it seems like it's facing a bunch of issues due to aging.
Thanks guys!
I just bought one last week. Refurbished. So far, so good. Still early to judge but this phone is so fast and smooth.
I am running stock with Marshmallow 6.0. I usually root but really I have no need to right now.
I got a mint used one with zero lemon 9k mah battery for 120, it's stock 6.0.1 rooted and debloated and works fantastic.
Thanks guys! I made the purchase with an extra battery!

In my opinion, best phone for the price and features. I have had mine for nearly two years and it is still going strong. Just got a smart circle case with wireless charging and really happy with it. Developer support is also very good. I tried to run the Tmobile stock 6.0 but it was sluggish and Wifi calling could never connect. Using multirom, I can boot into LP for wifi calling if I need it. Fulmics is my main rom and I could not be happier with the features and performance.

Bluetooth is working perfectly with the stock Fulmics kernel for me. I had tried a different kernel and it broke Bluetooth so I reverted back to avoid issues.
Everyone keeps talking about Fulmics.
May finally root my phone and try it!
How is the battery life?
My local store has one still BNIB collecting dust on the shelf, I didn't find out till after I got their last BNIB G4 and they didn't have any current price for it as corporate stopped updating that price list. I'm sort of thinking maybe I should have got it vs my G4 because of potential bootloop issues but my G4 was manufactured in April 2016 which is apparently after LG fixed the hardware problem. We'll see. I have half a mind to call them up tomorrow and see if I can get a current price on it.
I had a G3 on Verizon but didn't have it long enough to really make it shine. VZW installs so much freaking bloat that its kinda impossible to fairly judge a phone sometimes. Spec wise its honestly pretty close to the G4 although my G4 out of the box is the fastest phone I've had on an OEM rom and its not even close.
Definitely. I have had mine (bought it used) for 7 months now and have had no issues. I would recommend rooting and flashing a custom rom. Makes the phone so much better. It has the removable battery which is great, especially since the battery life is so-so. I can get through a whole day with it with moderate use so I guess it isn't that bad.
It's still a good phone, but look into the moto g4, double LTE speed capabilities. and double charging speed capabilities. Gotta keep up with the newest features

LG G3 vs. G4 vs. G5
After watching dozens of YouTube videos making comparisons with these three phones, the G3 is still a great phone. The fact that you can buy one new very cheaply now is a plus. I am running Marshmallow now on mine with all of the latest updates. Stock 100%, but rooted and many of the apps frozen with Titanium Backup Pro. I NEVER have an issue with my phone. Battery life is excellent, I never drop calls, Wi-Fi calling works perfectly with my cable provider's router. The G4 and G5 look great but the "new improvements" are minimal at best. The newer models will cost you hundreds more, but the bells and whistles just are not there from what I have seen. An extra physical button or two would not sway me to upgrade this phone.

Pretty good.
Phone is pretty good. My main criticisms are the phones heat issue and rather dull screen. I haven't run custom ,don't know how much that helps.
Can anyone comment on what you would lose going custom ROM? Currently running stock Marshmallow 30D.

As for heating issues -- only one thing will make the biggest difference: lowering the screen resolution to 1080p. That made the biggest difference in the world for me. But to do that, you would need to be on an AOSP rom.
Biggest thing you lose going custom is the camera quality. As for other things, with AOSP you lose the knock code to unlock feature (only feature from LG that I miss), and the LG apps if you actually like any of them. In general, you void your warranty by rooting, and you could run into some issues with some custom roms, Most common is lack of Bluetooth functionality, although many will have it working. It is a much greater experience than stock roms in my opinion and worth the loss. Worst comes to worst, and you go on a nice vacation where you need a good camera for pictures (i.e. hiking) then you could always restore your stock OS (backup is a must in TWRP once you are rooted) and use it for the vacation time, and go back to a custom rom once it is over

Thanks for the input on what's lost. I've read about the camera issue. Good to know that's the biggest difference.
Actually if you're running Marshmallow there is a game optimizer mode that will drop the screen resolution to 1080p when gaming on stock. This is where most of the heat issues occur. There's also an option to reduce the resolution to 1080p for all apps. Both options require root.
That being said, even at 1080p the phone gets hotter than it should for gaming. The only other option I've found is the hardware thermal paste mod. Not willing to try it yet.

For me the phone got hot even with just multitasking. I really don't game too much and it was heating up like crazy. 1080p fixed all those issues for me. I felt as though performance was slightly better on 1400p, contrary to popular belief. The antutu score also showed that as well. Still like 1080 better though

I have got to say my G3 is by far the best phone I've ever owned. I'm currently running Stock rooted 30D. I was thinking about flashing Fulmics ROM, but I read about losing of Bluetooth. I connect to my TV with HDMI Slimport adapter so I can play games on the big screen with my MOGA Power Pro gamepad. So losing Bluetooth is a deal breaker.

Make me feel good about my Moto Z Play purchase.

Hi all,
For about 8 years I've enjoyed having Android devices and modding them. I've been on ATT during most of that time and have gone with whatever flagship Samsung had at the time. My current device is a very dated GS5 and honestly from the locked bootloader to what I feel is disappointing hardware I decided a while ago that I would be trying a different manufacturer next. Right now ATT's android offerings are lacking to be generous. So I decided to buy the first off contract phone in a while an unlocked Moto Z Play.
I decided a long time ago that the best thing to do was purchase a flagship model no matter what but the lack of a headphone jack in the force and the battery capacity of the Play made me go this route. I don't do mobile games I just want a seamless experience from apps to browsing content heavy Internt pages.
If I do a total strip, unlock, root and flash of my Moto Z Play using a stable kernel and good ROM build will it make me feel good about my purchase?
Thanks in advance
Considering how the phone at stock is and what you want from it: "I just want a seamless experience from apps to browsing content heavy Internt pages", how is it not performing that?
Your post is very confusing. Other than it not being a "Flagship" phone, you offer no actual issues you are having with the z Play. Here's what I like about The Z Play. Like you, I only ever had Flagship Sammys. My last 2 Were Note 7. After I returned it I decided to get this phone to hold me over until the Note 8. This battery is insane. Yesterday I had almost 7 hours of SOT and the battery was at 50%, the screen brightness at 50% as well . Other than heavy gaming, there's no noticeable difference in the chip performance from the 820 in the Flagship phones. The stock system /UI takes a little bit to get used to if you had one of the more recent Samsung phones, which you haven't. The battery mod I got with this phone is great for a little extra juice on the rare occasions I need it. Overall, this is a solid phone with a great price tag.
Unless you have a particular need for a root-required feature (ad blocking options, certain apps) or you aren't willing to wait a little bit for Nougat, you probably will lose more than you gain by rooting and romming. Unlock kills your warranty, and depending on where you go ROM wise, you'll lose Android pay and anything else that requires safety net, unless you go one of the few routes that seem to support magisk.
Performance wise there doesn't appear to be much gain at this point, and if you go to a non stock based custom ROM, you may have camera issues, and you definitely lose Moto mod support.
The stock ROM on this phone is pretty clean, just includes the Moto stuff that is pretty functional for minimal overhead for most people, and you can always turn it off if you don't like it. Throwing in an SD card more than makes up for the small amount of extra storage you gain from a mild debloat.
Based on your post, I didn't see anything that indicates you would benefit from root and ROM. Keep it stock. It's awesome.
The MZP is a great performer and everything is smooth, except demanding 3d games (regular 3d games are just fine). Don't recommend messing with the firmware
Also, wait till you see how long it goes on a charge
It's the most powerful 32-bit phone ever.
Judging by the tone of some people I guess I stepped on some toes. I'm sorry if my post triggered you.
I don't even have the phone yet so yeah, maybe it'll be everything and more I could ever dream of in a device right out of the box. Who knows.

You will not be disappointed. This is the first phone I have where I don't really see the need to change anything. Buttery smooth, great battery out of the box and it has nougat already.
Maybe root to install adaway but i now use dns66 thanks to whoever recommend it to me a few days back and that too is gone.
I'm used to owning Nexus phones.
The Moto Z play combines raw Android along with Moto actions which are pretty great. It's a premium feel, build and design. I average between 10-14 hours SOT....The battery life is untouchable

It was me. Glad to hear it is working fine for you.
There are still two points which make rooting advantageous if you are not interested in modifying the system. First is, backup is difficult if you have no access to your own data stored by the apps. There is a way (adb), but it is not that convenient compared with Titanium backup. Second is, if you copy or move files, the timestamp can't be kept without root. You can't sort files by age once you move them, and syncing and revision control gets more difficult.
@adam-l-c I'd also say stripping should be done carefully if it is really seen as necessary. There often are services waiting for another service. If you only disable or remove one service and don't recognize the dependant, it may cause system load. You seem to have an idea what you're doing, so I wish you good luck and would be glad to hear what you find is really worth disabling. The device is working smooth as it is, at least for me (still using Marshmallow).
Believe it or not I gave my unlocked pixel XL to my wife and took her Moto z play. I needed proper ms exchange services that AOSP doesn't have. Nougat would be nice. The pixel camera is slightly better. The z is pretty heavy but built like a tank. Typical Moto. I don't notice the lower res screen or slower processor. I live in a world of good enough apparently.

ADB backup does not work on the lastest Moto phones, AFAICT. Ditto Helium which is just a front end for same. ADB disable apps quit working with one of our patches, December I think, VZW anyway.
TY for DNS66 mention.
To Op,
Moto pulled a whopper on this phone. While the screen brightness is better for daylight viewing on the sisters and they have VR and better gaming. Yet I would not trade to those.

You're not stepping on anyone's toes. Sounds like you're a bit sensitive.. People are just saying how good the phone is and I agree with them.
It's fast, battery life is damn good, and Moto actions are pretty awesome.
Nice performance
Awesome battery life
Gaming is also fine

(SM-920P) [Rooted] Custom ROM & Kernel combos for Nougat 7.0?

So I never really used "mainstream" or "flagship" & this is my first Samsung phone ever... & That being said the battery on this thing is s*** & I took the liberty of reading on here about the S7E battery hack, not knowing anything about modding or hacking phones. I took it to get the battery swapped, but my phone wouldn't boot, only showed the charging screen. So instead he put a S6E+ in my phone. The old battery was in it since 2015 (got it pre-owned through boost) so it's already better even without the phone recognizing the new capacity. I Rooted my phone for the first time, using ODIN, TWRP, & SuperSU, but I didn't make a backup first. I tried installing 2 different Kernels, Kiboi & SkyHigh. Kiboi had some kind of error before booting & said seandroid not enforcing on the Samsung screen and wouldn't go past that part. Removed that and tried SkyHigh kernel, it worked but got stuck on "Image Support Required" "Creating Image" so I took the original firmware from Samsung, wiped my entire phone and started over.
*UPDATE: I've switched from SuperSU to Magisk successfully & Synapse is working & SkyHigh didn't work because I installed v4 instead of v6*
So my main questions are these...
1: What Kernels for 920P will recognize a S7E battery.
2: What are a few things I should NOT do to avoid severely damaging my phone's OS/Software?
3: AccuBattery is reporting innacurate readings because it can't recognize it's not the original battery. How do I get my phone to recognize the new capacity in my settings & AccuBattery?
I am completely new to all of this, thanks in advance.
I figured a lot out. I've successful flashed BigDaddy ROM for Nougat, & SkyHigh v6.0.0 Kernel. Rooted with magisk. How do I make my phone recognise a S7 Edge battery?

The driver at that layer is not within then S6 base kernel. Send me the output of “ls -lR /sys”.
I intend to keep this kernel going well into the future, no plans to switch phones for as long as the battery keeps working but I can add support for other phones if there are testers.

Output? How do I find that in the phone system? @tdhite

This is fantastic news I just grabbed a new s6 from boost the other day for 100 bucks and was sad to see that there was little to nothing as far as development went for g920p but came across your kernel and I just love it..so many options in synapse it was overwhelming at first but now I want more I paired it with with the uni debloat mod floating around here that with some slight modification ended up working out quite well and was able to have 19gb of free space (and that's with an almost 8gb TWRP backup I have just in case I break something lol...so yes please keep up development of you would thanks alot

Same here, that's how I got mine. Right now I'm on BigDaddy ROM for Nougat & SkyHigh v6 Kernel. I'd be willing to test if @tdhite adds support for the S7E battery mod, but I can't find the "driver layer output" or whatever it is he needs, I'm new to all of this I think I'm learning it all very fast but I'm still confused on a lot of the abbreviations, codes, lingo, ect. My only issue is I think the ROM uses way to much memory? I'll only have like 500-300mb left out of 3 gigs within an hour or so?

I have noticed that as well but I don't believe it is the ROM. It is the SWAP file from the Sky Kernel. When you go to Synapse and go to the Memory tab, mine is set at 2047mb. With 2698 total memory, that leaves 651 mb of available memory.

Okay thanks, that makes sense. The struggle is real here... I kept getting some weird problem where Magisk would randomly keep uninstalling and I couldn't access my Samsung Cloud. I reflashed the ROM (with S6 Launcher instead of S8) then the kernel. Haven't had the problem since.
NOW my issue is with Accubattery. I'm reading less than 2 hours of SOT!?!!!? My battery has the S6E+ installed and it's supposed to be 3,000mah, but I'm having worst battery life than I did before. I'm so confused I've tried calibrating it several times using Synapse & [ROOT] Battery Calibration Apps.
