Android Q Beta Full Gestural Navigation w/ third party launchers? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Can anyone tell me if the new full gestural navigation is playing nice with third party launchers in Q beta 4? Specifically Lawnchair? I know with two button gestures the back arrow stayed on screen the entire time when using a third party launcher, even on the home screen. Not crazy about that look. I'm wondering if the new full gestural navigation in Q, with the slimmed down pill at the bottom of the screen, was functioning normally with third party launchers, same as it does for the default Pixel launcher. Would like to jump on board this Q train, and full gestures, but cannot give up third party launchers to do so.
Thanks in advance.

I am using the full gestures on nova and they work good enough to use daily, I have not tried on other launchers.

Great, thanks, that's good to know. So for the most part, full gesture navigation in Q beta 4 is working the same on Nova as it is in the default pixel launcher? Hopefully that applies to Lawnchair, and other third party launchers as well.

It is a useable service, has the odd issue when accessing recent items but have not noticed anything else.

What is the trick to get into the app draw instead of recent apps when swiping up?

So swiping up on the line in full gesture navigation opens recents every time? Instead of the app drawer?
Can a separate gesture then be set in a third party launcher to open the app drawer when swiping up on the homescreen? Could be a work around.

Swiping up does open the app drawer but there is a fine line between the recent app action and opening the app drawer

The trick I use is to swipe up slightly above the line, don't touch the line as you get recent apps.

True Modded/Alternative Launcher

Hey all!
I've been doing some searching and can't seem to find an answer to my question: is there a proper Pixel 3 modded/alternative launcher.
I'm looking for a launcher that is identical to the stock launcher (same app drawer, home screens, gap between the search bar and dock etc) but with some extra features like app hiding and custom icons. I've looked at CPL and Rootless Launcher but they don't seem quite right.
Does anyone know if anything exists or is this something I'm going to have to do without (for now) or try and create myself?
As always, TIA!
I believe that's exactly what Lawnchair Launcher is meant to be.

Lawnchair doesn't seem to replicate 3XL launcher the same but I could be imagining things so I'll have another look.

I'd not tried Ruthless so I'll give it a go.
Thank you both!
These were almost perfect except setting them as default launcher gets rid of the suggested apps dock and search bar from the regents/app switcher.
Also, I can't seem to get the Google Feed (swipe left) to install/work properly either.
At this rate I feel I'm leaning more and more likely to root to get my perfect Pixel but doing so within the first six month voids my phone contract Toss plus my s/o is a bit of a technophobe and doesn't want me "breaking a new phone".
Root also kills my banking app and a few games I play so...gah!

Suggested app dock when swiping up is something i miss as well. Just recently began using DU Rom again now that active edge is working. That is really one of the things that i miss while using the included launcher.

I'm using Lawnchair 2 and I have to say that it's the most similar launcher to the original one at the moment.
Pie recents, feed, even actions in the app drawer, plus all the customization. Usually when you change icon pack you see the original icon in the recents screen, with lauwnchair you have the new icon pack everywhere, even in the recents.
I too want a launcher I can
Hide Apps,
Folders in the launcher itself or groups like Nova.
That's really about it . i'm using nova right now but sometimes i feel it's too heavy

Try the latest alpha of Lawnchair V2. I'm happy with it albeit without the recents dock but the only fix for that is root which I'm not in a position to do at the moment but I guess I can live without of the trade offs. Sesame Shortcuts just got integration too which is cool as well as grouped app drawer like Nova.

There is a Magisk module I think called QuickStep that will enable the recents dock and you can get Lawnchair Launcher from either APK Mirror or I follow the Telegram channel.

Android Q Gestures + 3rd party launchers

Been struggling with this lawnchair, nova, and pretty much every launcher i tried disables the gestures and reverts me back to 3 button navigation bar..
Any suggestions?
Funny thing is, it works fine as long as i don't set nova\lawnchair as a default - i can continue using those launchers + gestures.
Why would this funky behavior be?

It's just the way Google programmed it. Ask Google.

My guess is it has to do with the way the new gestures and their animations integrate with the launcher (the app minimizing to the icon on the home screen when swiping up, etc.) and they're working on 3rd party support for that. They said it'd be in a post-launch update, but there's no ETA on that yet.

Nova Launcher - Slow redrawing

For those using Nova. Have you also noticed slow redrawing of the home screen when from any app you go back to home screen using gesture?? It doesn't happen on Oneolus launcher
Yes. Same here. Annoying as hell. Ot happens on all launchers except the OnePlus launcher.
Any solutions?

I have noticed this, also, sometimes I end back on the OnePlus launcher and have to press the home button to get back into Nova Prime.
Gesture support was only recently made available to 3rd party launchers on Android 10. Hopefully it will get better with future updates when Android develops better support for 3rd party launchers.
The delay in loading Nova only happens when using the gesture navigation and using the gesture for home screen. Using the back gesture has no delay in loading the Launcher. Similarly using three button navigation has no delay.
I have reported it as a bug to OnePlus using the OnePlus community app and you should do the same.
Yeah, I had the same experience with Nova (or any other 3rd party launcher), so I made some workaround:
I downloaded Fluid Navigation Gestures app from the Playstore, it works without any problem and flaws...I am using three button nav panel in system settings, but Fluid Navigation Gestures app can hide that nav panel with simple ADB command and the result is you can control your phone with gestures with 3rd party launcher, but without any slow redrawings or any other bugs.
are there any solutions? i was hoping with the new update it would work...

At the moment the only one solution is Fluid Navigation Gestures.

Gesture Navigation

I'm still confused as to what specific nav gestures folks keep bringing up when it comes to third party launchers not supporting them?
So on my previous OnePlus phones, I used Nova Launcher. I used full nav gestures. Swip up to home, swipe up and hold for recent apps, swipe from sides to nav back.
On my S20+, I'm using full nav gestures, no indicator, but Samsung's buttons like on my Note 10+ which was awesome. Swipe up from bottom right to go back, swipe up from bottom middle to go home, swipe up from bottom left for recent apps and with this setup I still have that wonderful ability to swipe from the left or right side of the display (all along the sides from the top and bottom) so I can pull from the sides in order to bring up side menus that many apps use. Like the Google Play Store.
So from what I can tell, if you want to use the swipe from the sides to go back and swipe from corner for GA, you can't do this on the Sammy phones unless using the stock launcher but I still could use these gestures on my OP phones using Nova.
So what exactly are third party launchers blocking? I'm sorry if I'm being a dummy here. Any help is useful. Thank you!
It's not third party launchers which are blocking it its Google, they had limitations on android 10 which were later patched. The issue is now that the phone manufacturers have to implement that patch. Samsung said a week or so ago that this feature will be coming with the One Ui 2.5 but I have seem no time scales.

But what specific gestures are not working using third party launchers that Google is blocking? Because I seem to have been able to use various full gestures across the OnePlus 7T, 7T Pro, Note 10+ and now S20+.

Nova Launcher

As much as I want to use Nova Launcher, it's just not as smooth and quick as the stock Pixel Launcher. Anyone else feel this way? At the same time, I have a love/hate relationship with Pixel Launcher because I love having the icon unread notification numbers on Nova as well as being able to change the home screen grid size. In the end, though, Nova is just not as quick loading apps and the app drawer.
I agree Google isn't making it easy to use another launcher on Pixel phones. It's a shame.
Nova is definitely not as smooth as the Pixel launcher. But Nova has so many advantages for me that I'll take its options over overall smoothness any day.

Same here.
U guys can use one plus launcher, one UI launcher and a custom pixel launcher as well with More customizations. There's a thread on telegram.
Action Launcher does pretty much everything Nova can do and it does everything stock pixel launcher does too. Including copying from recents screen and using Android 10 gestures.
Launchers can add the ability to work correctly on Pixels, Google opened up the ability for 3rd party launchers in December, Action Launcher is only one I know of that can do it without using quickstep or magisk.

I keep seeing these threads where at least one person claims Nova doesn't work correctly. Last year, I would have agreed... but I've been using Nova for months and I have forgotten about any drawbacks if there are any. The only differences I remember are a couple animations and the recents menu doesn't have suggestion icons? (which never suggested apps I wanted to use, so I don't miss it)
What's the smoothness that people are complaining about? The animations run as fast as my finger pushes things around... Is it just the quality and type of animations? If so, I want functionality far over such things. Having to use substratum/magisk to customize the Pixel Launcher was way worse than recreating my layout in Nova. If only things like TeslaUnread were still officially supported... but Google likes killing off useful things.
Feel free to help me understand what I'm missing.

Nova says in the settings that Google has not made it possible for Nova to use Android 10 gestures correctly. Google has made it work, but Nova hasn't been updated to allow it yet.

In my opinion, the warning is wrong. Back when I first got my phone, like half of the gestures didn't quite work. Now everything works for me.
At Nova's homescreen...
Swipe from side: Isn't triggered because you can't go back from home. Just flips pages.
Swipe from bottom: Opens app search. I'm not sure if the gesture is doing this or Nova is.
Swipe from bottom & hold: Opens recents.
Swipe from corner: Shows assistant overlay.
Everything basic works. I don't have palm swipe screenshots enabled.
My issue with Nova is the delay going back to the home screen. I can't immediately open another app. I always have to wait an extra second or click on app twice before it opens. I want the full pixel experience and it seems that Nova doesn't always deliver on it. I do occasionally go back to it until I get annoyed with my first statement.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
Honestly, I've never noticed this. I guess I go home before I know what I want to click on and so I'm never quick enough to see it.
The way it's acting, it reminds me of a paused activity that needs to refresh when the app gets restored. I tried to disable battery optimization for Nova, but it didn't help. I'm not sure how to solve that.
I tried the same test on my old phone and pressing the home button actually does nothing for a split second, then Nova shows and responds immediately. But when you gesture, you want it to happen immediately... not a split second later. So in that way, Android 10 and Nova do the sensible thing and shows the paused activity.

I was using Nova Launche a lot of time ago! let's going to check how does it works now!
I have no reason to use any other launcher than pixel launcher. It works just as I need.
not sure what the hoo-blah is. I have been using Nova prime beta with no issues. No problems returning home... No speed issues. The warning that is in there is talking about the gesture navigation system wide not inside the launcher. So this means you have to use the classic 3 button method to navigate (back, home, recent). IMHO this does not affect the experience at all. Definitely prefer Nova and the customization over the stock launcher. :good:
Edit:Actually just changed the nav settings and Nova is working with new gestures.

I just switched back to Nova from Lawnchair on both my S20+ and Pixel 4XL. Nova works beautiful now and Nova Google Companion works with dark mode.
I'm on Android 11 Beta and am running Nova with no problems with gestures at all. For some reason on 10 they were not working as smooth and I would get some lag going back to the home screen. On 11, those problems have seemed to disappear.
While that's true, the closing app animation is not there and feels weird. ( Using gesture navigation )
