Having trouble flashing custom ROM - Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone
I have tried flashing a custom ROM. TWRP3.3.1 is installed and therefore bootloader unlocked. I tried flashing resurrection remix as per this guide:
1)Full wipe (system,data,vendor, dalvik,cache,internal storage) + format data.
2)Flash No-verity-opt patch + xiaomu.eu developer on Oreo or xiaomi.eu 10.2.1 Stable
3)Factory reset
4)Reboot to recovery
5)Flash Resurrected Kernel v3.3
6)Flash POST-sGSI_3_v0.6 .zip
7)Flash RR System.img
8)Flash Magisk 18.0 (if you get an error that /vendor can't be mounted then just reboot recovery and flash Magisk again)
9)Reboot to system
10)Setup system
11)Reboot to recovery
12)Flash BiTGApps or OpenGapps + Magisk 18.0
13)Reboot to system
Although I used Kernel 5.1 PIE
Before this attempt I tried Havoc and I tried lineage and it's always the same... flashing the system.img takes only seconds and declares success. Then the boot screen of the respective ROM stays forever.
I just flashed xiaomi.eu ROM 10.2.1 and that boots fine.
What am I missing here?
Thanks!

Also I don't seem to have anti rollback protection enabled (or I guess I would have bricked the phone anyway by now):
getvar:anti FAILED (remote: GetVar Variable Not found)

Looks like nobody has this phone seeing as there is no official custom ROM development... interesting considering the thread about the 6GB version has 13k views....

Custom Rom development seems to have started very recently after the statement of XIAOMI that there will not be a MAX 4 this year.
But from what I've seen so far, most people are on some kind of MIUI Custom Rom and only a few went the route of trying a more AOSP like Custom Rom.
Regarding your statement that you don's seem to have Anti Rollback Protection, I am 100% sure this is wrong. I've seen threads about that topic that asked why they can't get the ARP value anymore with the method you used and if I recall correctly there was a different way of doing it.
Cheers

I just managed to solve my issues.
I installed the patched TWRP for Nitrogen https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max-3/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-3-1-nitrogen-t3866084
Interestingly enough, installing a custom ROM image still only takes about ten seconds or so. But now the stuff actually boots.
The Xiaomi.eu ROM that Tradingshenzhen packaged in their tutorial does not have ARB yet. I believe the latest ROMs do.

Look inside your ROM for antiroll the same say to me not found but the beta stock ROM have the 4. This is stopping me to do anything on this phone. Never buy xiaomi again. They add this stupid antiroll they stop betas they make always year after year the phones cheaper.. I mean they remove custom led rgb only white then they make it so small you can't see it. To have the phones cheap they go down on quality

Lineage OS 15.0 Dev Thread [DISCUSSION]

Figured we should have a thread set up for discussion, has anyone started work on this? Maybe we should get a hangouts group started.
When does the development starts?
I don't know the procedure of ROM development. Are devs waiting for the oreo update from HTC?
Some devs already work on Oreo aosp, but it's not that easy to get it working on the 10 so that everything works. Maybe even stock will be earlier here than custom Roms like aosp and los
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA Labs
Don't really know about LOS but AOSP based is already here...

P.S why is there a Dev in the Title?
Is there any news?

You can't start a "Dev thread" if you aren't a dev on the project; you can only start a "Nag thread".
Sorry for unqualified question. I know the new site but I don't know where to find dev threads. If you can help me I'll be glad.
My question is why do some older phones have LOS 15.0 and we don't yet. You'd assume the newer phones get priority. My old HTC M8 has a fully functional LOS 15.

That device still has an active developer working on it. crpalmer, the user who brought 14.X to HTC 10 seems to have moved on to newer devices.
hope it will have LOS15.1
Even though Raymon left development does this mean there are no los 15 for us?
As already stated by fagyi, once he solves all bugs on aosip 8.1 he will build los.
15.1 Running flawless albeit hot sometimes!
Ladies and Gentleman,
I have been lately at the lack of instruction that some of the devs have in their OP in regards to the kernel challenges with running back and forth between nougat and oreo. All I want for my recently required and gently used HTC 10 was a simple and pure rom that I can theme and run unhindered of bloat and unneccesary tweaks without having to gut the rom with titanium backup. With that said, in my constant frustration over the past two weeks I have been able to get Lineage os 15.1 running flawlessly on my device as of yesterday with everything working including the camera and tethering. The speaker volume is a bit low, but I can live with that.
To run this as with the other 8.0 rom you have to be on nougat kernel. IF you are already running Oreo- stock or otherwise, you will have to downgrade your kernel being s-off. Generally I don't pay for sunshine but since i got a great deal on this used phone i coughed up the $25 bucks to fix my phone after deciding I wanted to run modified oreo without having to read 1100 pages of posts.
Personally I have Sprint as a provider so I used a combination of OMJs kernel flashing instructions
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-htc-10/development/ruu-sprint-htc-10-1-24-651-3-t3379257
along with this post to downgrade effectively:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/solution-imei-signal-downgrade-oreo-8-0-t3748999
Download Rom from here:
https://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/lineageos-15-1-for-htc-10-android-8-1/
Now I tested this rom by flashing multiple times and I could not get any version of gapps to work but then i discovered a work around that will help. But before I get there let me explain everything I did. Some steps may be unnecessary depending on where you are coming from but i think nougat kernel is a must. I did not ruu after kernel flash.
1. Flash kernel using adb.
2. Boot straight into bootloader then Wipe and then fix persist per wonders never ceases post.
I had issues with going back to nougat kernel and had to type these instructions in the twrp terminal to get my persist back:
To fix : failed to mount '/persist' (invalid argument)
Type this in twrp terminal:
make_ext4fs /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/persist
MAKE SURE YOU DO CLEAN WIPE all internal and format data. Fix ext4 after.
3. Resend twrp from adb.
4. Flash lineage Rom
5. Flash Magisk
6. Boot to Rom and install from Magisk G-apps systemless framework
This will not show up as being installed in magisk anymore after you install gapps. Gapps overwrites it somehow. But if you try to install gapps by itself, it will fail and crash when you boot to the rom.
7. Reboot to twrp and flash nano gapps.
8. clear cache, format data
9. profit!
Finger print scanner, Camera and everything is working. have not found any issues yet. Since I am kinda excited at getting back to LOS because i couldn't get it for my Bolt, i wanted to share with everyone else that fagyi's work is payoff.

If you are so frustrated about stuff you get for free than just stay stock and stop being frustrated.......mwuhahaha funny how the world works these days......oh and by the way, you don't downgrade your kernel, you downgrade your firmware.
Cheers, have an absolutely fabulous Sunday

Maybe was wrong. Maybe was Oreo firmware. Switched to this and had to go the other one. Sometimes I just go into a flashing rage and can't rememember what happened after.

I'm using that ROM build of 15.1 on my HTC 10 (Android 8.1), and it works pretty good actually. besides a few minor issues.
Unlocked Bootloader from HTCDev, Running latest TWRP Recovery, S-On (for me at least was not needed to turn this off), Latest Magisk (which seems to pass the Safetynet check) / Busybox.
I changed the Kernel afterwards to "kernel_htc_pme_aosp_tabp0le_eas_4.02-O" (from tabp0le) because it has the "performance" cpu governor that i can enable using Kernel Adiutor.
The bugs i encountered so far :
- Camera apps open slowly, except for "Open Camera" , not a big issue.
- HTC Sense Launcher doesn't seem to work, just get the famous (app has stopped) message, but maybe it's a conflict with my GAPPS installation
- Only 1 speaker works, HTC10 has Boomsound with 2 speakers on stock rom, 1 is a treble speaker, the other one is kinda like a small subwoofer for the low frequencies.
Is there any soundmod that would enable both speakers again?
There is not any mod to do that. But the dev of this ROM is working on getting the bottom speaker working.
I just saw that a new build-version is released for HTC10.
lineage-15.1-20180624-UNOFFICIAL-pme.zip

Has anyone tried a treble ROM on the Tab s4?

There are unfortunately no ROMs specifically for this device yet, but has anyone tried to use a generic treble ROM on this device?
Thanks in advance
I have tried several treble ROMs, the majority don't even boot. Lineage os worked but was buggy. The more stable one was Havoc, if I remember correctly.
I was interested in the Q developer ROM but it didn't work. I'm back to the stock pie Rom, since there is no Netflix HD support on those treble roms.

Hi Mate, I've been trying to flash a working GSI rom but had no success so far(have an SM-T830). In the past have built ROMs for Tab A 10.1 and flashed them many times with TWRP and Odin so I just cannot understand am I retarded to not being able to flash a working one or what? Have managed to put TWRP 3.3.0.0 and TWRP 3.3.0.1 on the device. Have tried my own arm64_aonly image first. Then an original AOSP one, then a Lineage OS version, at the moment I am just downloading Havoc. The result (apart from the havoc) was always the same. The flashing went through successfully and when I rebooted into system the very fist image came up and boot looped from there. I am always able to go back to TWRP and try another image or through odin can restore the factory image but none of the GSI images seem to be working. So, here is my question. As you managed to get a Lineage and Havoc working, can you tell by looking at it what am I doing wrong please:
1.: OEM unlock
2.: TWRP install with odin
3.: Boot straight into TWRP to prevent being overwritten
4.: TWRP: format data
5.: Flash system image (arm64_aonly)
From here have tried so many things like,
- booting straight into system
- booting back to recovery
- flashing the force_decryptor or how the hell is that called
- formatted data again as the decryptor suggests
The result was always the same, boot looped from the very first image. It seems like that the image is not getting flashed and even if TWRP says was flashed right it is just not there. I'm literaly pulling my hair as it was so easy and straight forward with the Tab A 10.1, but with this ….. thanks for your answer in advance

I used AOSP 9.0 and LineageOS 16 with OpenGApps Pico and both work but are very buggy.
After hours of trying to figure this out myself i ended up finding two ROMs that work for me. I was running stock Android 9 with september's security updates when testing these out:
Roms that i tried, that did NOT work:
BlissOS
ArrowOS
Lineage16
The ROMs that DID work for me were:
phunsson's Treble Experimentations
microG ufOfficial
The only 2 bugs that i've seen so far have been a small graphical glitch of quickettings not staying within the bounds of the pulldown and MTP not working at all. These are both present in both ROMs (The microg ROM uses phhusson's rom as the base). Neither of these bother me all that and i'm very happy to be able to move to microg and not have all the google/samsung bloat hogging my tablet and constantly trying to ping their motherships.
Here's a great list of Generic System Image (GSI) ROMs that you can click scroll through and try downloading and flashing to your device to see if you have any luck.
My process of installing phunsson's GSI ROM:
Reboot to TWRP,
Do a factory reset (Wipe > "Swipe to Do Factory Reset")
Install Image
Reboot
Took about a minute and a half displaying the bootanimation before it got to the home screen for the first time. If it's loading for more than 5 minutes then that ROM definitely isn't going to work with your device.
Hope this helps someone out there trying to get away from their bloated Samsung One UI.

I have not. I just really wanted an AOSP based ROM and i had gotten to the point where i had reflashed the stock firmware 3 times through ODIN because I messed up 1 thing or another. So once i got a functional ROM that worked great I just decided to stick to it. Also I don't think Android 10 has Xposed support yet, and i need that in order to enable Signature Spoofing for MicroG's FakeStore.

Bootloop on the latest stock global firmware (V10.3.1.0.PEIMIXM)

Hi, I've tried to update my Global Redmi Note 5 Pro's firmware for a few days now to allow usage with the latest pie custom roms, but all the attempts to get my phone booting on the latest versions seem to have failed so far.
Everytime the phone either gets stuck on the boot logo or the loading screen (for more than an hour, so I assume it is bootlooping). I am not sure on what could be causing those issues, though they seem to have appened to a few other people on the miui forum. The phone does not get bricked by installing the latest firmware (fastboot and recovery still work), but it only appears to boot after reflashing oreo firmwares. Pie only seemed to work on custom roms relying on an oreo firmware.
Did those issue happen to anyone else, or has anyone found a solution?
So far what I've tried was:
- Installing the a pie firmware from twrp (from xiaomifirmwareupdater's github), installing a pie compatible twrp, formatting the data and cache partititon, then flashing a custom rom -> stuck on bootlogo
- Reformatting data, cache, vendor and system partitions to make sure they are not somehow damaged, then installing the latest firmware, twrp pie recovery, and a custom rom (retried with more than one custom roms) -> stuck on bootlogo
- Installing the latest stock miui pie fastboot firmware with flash_all.sh (should flash all device partitions) -> stuck on miui bootanimation for more than an hour
- Formatting Data/Factory reset -> still stuck on MIUI bootanimation
- Installing the latest stock MIUI Oreo fastboot firmware with flash_all.sh -> works flawlessy
- Installing any Oreo custom rom -> works flawlessy
So far I've not managed to take any logcat (adb does not detect any device, the issue probably happens before adbd starts running). I am not sure on what could cause those issues.
(I was wondering if it could be related to the latest kernel, though the fact that miui reaches the bootanimation means that it's at least somewhat working; another unlikely possibility might be an hardware issue, but then why'd it work on oreo?)
Thanks in advance for any help
With miui pie, older boot-loader wont work. Infact you would need pie recovery and pie rom to boot. You could try fastboot flashing oreo rom and older rom will work. try to flash arb v4 rom or device will get bricked.
Happend to me once.
What I have done:
Flash latest oreo (or pie for better sake) by miui flash. Remember to match your ARB value.
Go to pie via updater (if you don't care ARB thing. I don't know if fwless pie will work). Don't install recovery now. Let it boot first.
Load pie recovery via fastboot then flash recovery via recovery.
I have the same problems. Pie fw has not been use by dev. So please wait some future rom update

Thanks for the info; shouldn't the bootloader also get updated when fastboot flashing the latest pie firmware? (xbl.elf and abl.elf get flashed, bl looks like an abbreviation for bootloader)

Thanks, I just tried to update from an oreo miui firmware via ota as suggested. Unfortunately the result appears to be the same; the phone is stuck on the bootlogo forever and won't boot on a miui pie fw.

You mean xiaomi/miui devs? But yeah, I guess waiting for some future update is the only thing I can do for now.
Is it your device is china variant or global variant ??
If your mobile is china variant follow below steps.
Flash China Oreo Fastboot rom using MiFlash Software and then flash China Pie fastboot ROM (Later you can flash global android pie fastboot rom but do not lock bootloader)
If your device global avriant, follow below steps
flash 10.3.1 Oreo fastboot ROM and then flash 10.3.1 android pie fastboot rom (or you can update to android pie using updater method)
this should resolve your issue. for more info visit en.miui.com/a-234.html

It's a Global variant bought from an official Xiaomi Store in italy, it always worked with global roms.
Unfortunately I also already tried to flash an oreo fastboot (global) rom, then update to pie from there, but the result was the same, stuck on bootlogo.
---
About 10 minutes ago I got it to boot on Pie for about 2 seconds on the setup after another reflash, then it crashed and turned off (and bootlooped).
Idk, I'm starting to think that if it only happens to me it might be an hardware issue. Maybe some blocks of the eMMC are damaged, and the issue only happens in Pie due to the slightly larger firmware images flashed to the various partitions; by coincidence more important data might end up on corrupted blocks.
I'll have to verify by dumping the partitions some times and verifying the data/checking for coherency between the dumps

Hello! You're not the only one facing this.
I also have Redmi Note 5 global model, and I'm facing the very same problem. I've tried everything, just like you...
I don't see many people with this problem but I found other 3-4 with the same problem: on Mi Community forum and in some Facebook groups. No one is having success... No one is able to fix this!
I'm worried, because as we are not too much facing this problem, maybe Xiaomi is not knowing that this is happening.
Contact me if you want to know more, and maybe together we can make anything! Let's hope for the best!

Ok...you all are not alone it seems.
Couple of months back I faced this issue but after struggling for a day I managed to boot into miui latest (global) after which I found my EFS+Modem partitions corrupted (ie. unknown baseband,no wifi or imei )...I guess data corruption is the cause.I went to the service center, they told me it was data corruption and the entire Motherboard had to be replaced...they quoted a price of ~Rs 8000 (Incl. GST ) for the repair...I am since then stuck without a phone
Edit: BTW...I bypassed the bootloop by flashing the latest global recovery rom through orange fox...(not recommended cause it might cause you to lose wifi and imei)..

[GUIDE] Unlocked BL, Installed TWRP and Rooted but cannot install custom ROM...

This info is for people who are finding it difficult to install a custom ROM or who are just waiting for the right time to experiment. This method is fail-safe. Any support needed, I am here to help .
To start with:
I unlocked my RM5P bootloader was able to install custom recovery and even root my phone, but I was not able to install a custom ROM ----- till yesterday night (I am on EVO X now).
Failed attempts:
I was able to downgrade to RMX1971EX_11_OTA_0170 with stock recovery but after loading the ROM, I cannot load into FASTBOOT.. Again to get into fastboot, I needed to upgrade to CO1 (Android 10).
Then from fastboot mode, I tried installing ROM (very old version) thus maintaining the TWRP and Fastboot.
I tried to install custom ROM, it gave me error 7. This error is because the Firmware was too old for the custom ROM to be installed.
Success:
I then installed color os V 170 from TWRP (it can decrypt OZIP files-it will covert that to zip and install). Used just common sense, as all custom ROMs at present need color os (specifically version ...170), so after installing ROM using TWRP and staying in the recovery (because if I load ROM now, I will lose FB and TWRP), I Dirty Flashed (just to be on the safe side) custom ROM (EVO X) , and then format data (might still give you error, there is a workaround) and restart. That's it.
I am in Evolution X latest build.
ADVICE:
Whatever experiments you want to do on your mobile, do it while you are in WARRANTY (after confirming you have your service center nearby and working). If your phone ends up bricked (like me-before) get it fixed free of cost. BECOME A PRO WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD.
Oh well that's extremely nice of you and useful. You're helping the community of this device a great deal with your informational and technical guides. I can safely thank you in the name of all users.
Though I'm feeling kind of sorry and bad for you. You really weren't able to use custom ROMs till 14th of May? Geez... That must've been horrible. I'm a fan of pure and stock like, simple, well modable/shapeable Android since I was a kid and got my Samsung Galaxy phone with Android 2.1 back in 2009. Since then I can't stand any limitation brought by Android skins like Miui or Color OS. I was on GSI ROM on the third day of having my Realme Q back in October of 2019. Not like warranty did count anything since there's no Realme in Hungary and it was an import device from AliExpress. So many testing and experience, lots of adventure. Can't even imagine what would I have done if I couldn't get rid of COS till now. Even the thought is maddening to me ? You've got my respect.

I appreciate your time and message.
I have only dared once in my lifetime to experiment on a tablet i bought online on the first day, that time i restored it with another rom, and even replaced that gadget after 2 days for another one because it didn't have multi touch, many years ago.
With realme, i was kind of scared to experiment till some months back and i even had to visit service centre thrice to restore. Now i have learned a bit on how we can BRICK our phone.
One important thing i learned is, STOCK rom is the best, and i am back on it.
Thank you.

Avoid installing custom roms using duty flash, i mean the second custom rom should be done as clean install. I said that specifically because, i tried three roms in a span of 1 hour, the third duty flash (derpfest rom) gave me indefinite boot. Had to go to service centre because phone was not bootng to twrp.
I went back to custom rom, Android 10 to get BL back. Anyways, i was not that satisfied with the present custom roms available.
But that's me, you can go ahead and try roms.

I suggest you check this with another derpfest user, please. I never got to boot to derpfest.
I downloaded Evolution X 4.7 Rom zip file and followed the instructions given in thread to flash zip file. But after flashing when I tried to reboot in system, it gave me a message on swipe screen that OS is not installed but still I swiped to boot in system. My device tried to boot a couple of time and ended up in fastboot again. Fortunately I had already made backup so I restored my backup.
As per your post I should have flashed color os 6 ozip file with twrp before flashing evox rom.
Every thing ok.i think you are not flash Vebeta after flash recovery.

Thanks. Currently I'm using pixel experience custom ROM Android 11. If I install it, can I root my device using nesberry TWRP ? Does this ROM support Optimus drunk kernel?
Just a quick note I understand you want to save time and copy and paste the opening page but everyday this phone gets a dozen starting new threads for simple questions and the reason that is is because there's not good information out there. You guys have to quit saying boot into recovery and make a backup and flash rom. We can make a backup kinda but you can't restore it so it's a waste of time. But new users see that and maybe a backup goes through on USB C drive and they find out it won't restore. Really it should read take any photos or data and put it to hard drive on PC or USB otg. Make sure to have PC with miflash and miui rom for Poco F3 downloaded and available in case. Than when you do flash rom with Twrp, orange fox, whatever be prepared to get tons of errors and unable to mount errors and no OS error and reboot and see what happens. No where does anyone actually lay out what people should do or expect to happen. Also 0mb twrp data showing refresh sizes in twrp backups option
Android Auto and Face Recognition works?
Nice ROM.
Beautiful Rom but payment by card is not possible.
Gonna Try
Fixup Build has been pushed. Update to Latest
One of the best AOSP based ROMs that I would recommend for this phone.

Is it pretty stable and battery life good screen on and off?
I made a dirty flash from pixel extended and all ok. Waiting for more customization features. Great job!
One of the best, clean and close to stock pixel rom, highly recommended

hi
do i need to root poco f3
if yes any link how
im on RKHEUXM
thanks
Facebook is very slow reopen.
I've tried multiple flash from MIUI 12.5 (A11) to this rom A12 onto a Poco F3 but I don't get how to get it working ?
I've:
- Rebooted into TWRP Vasi Recovery
- Make TWRP permanent in advanced tab (install recovery ramdisk with same TWRP img)
- Flash ROM (with or without twrp inject)
- Wipe Data (or not)
No OS is found and I cannot even see the storage until I flash again in fastboot mode with MIUI 12.5. What do I need to do ? It seems to be related to A12 since A11 version of Pixel UI is working fine (nevermind, it's going into bootloop) but I didn't find any informations about different steps to take.
FYI, it says decryption has been successful, always switch to inactive slot B and always getting those errors:
- Error opening : '/data/recovery/.version' (No such file or directory)
- E:backup /tmp/repackorig/
