Google Camera Mod - Portrait mode enabled and working!

Camera NX V7.3 is a Google Camera mod, which is modified to unlock most of the exclusive features of Pixel 2 for Nexus 2015 and original Pixel phones. with this updated version, you can get the Portrait mode working with Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel 2016 phones, which was the last Pixel 2’s exclusive feature.
Portrait mode was the most wanted feature for Nexus and Pixel 2016 users. I have considered that Portrait mode is a hardware limiting feature, it requires a special type of image data called PD (Pixel detector?) to enable Portrait mode, but some said Portrait mode can be active with front camera, I began to thinking that this feature should be able to work in software way which we can force to enable it on other phones. Turns out, Google uses PD data to calculate portrait effect on the Back lens while use software method on the Front lens.
We need the camera.experiment2017 library to active the Pixel 2 exclusive functions. thanks to the*Apk changer, the first tool which can deodex the Android 8.1 odex files. I force to enable the PD data model in the camera.experiment2017 library, which is telling camera app to enable Portrait mode. Portrait mode will replace the Lens-blur mode in the menu, it provides the face-retouching feature on both front and back camera, and it needs a human face to do the portrait effect job, it will take two burst photos, one is normal ZSL HDR+ photos, the other is applied the portrait effect. if no human face shows up, you will get one normal photo.

Camera NX V7.3 is based on Google Camera 5.1.016, why not the latest 5.1.018 version? because they are the same app with different version numbers. I decide to disable the Google photos combination, as it has the black screen issue, though this issue can be solved by totally replace the original Google camera in the system, it needs the same signature and provider name. I also remove the Help and Feedback in settings, and disable the silence feedback service, to make the app launching a little faster.
The new version was tested on my Nexus 5X, should work on Nexus 6P and Pixel 2016 phones too. I will also provide the modified AR Sticker and AR Core app for Nexus 5X/6P, you can use it without change phone model or add files to the system, you can use other AR sticker mod if you like. I was thinking AR Core is still in beta status, bugs like upside down photo on Nexus 5X, too many things need to be fixed in the future, so no need to make it perfect at this moment.

Maybe.. I don't know, but it should work on +7.1. Here working perfect on stock Oreo
Edit: It works only on Oreo

It may convince me to finally make the jump from 7.1.1, does this eliminate the need for phone tilting for background blur now?

Yes it does.
It works exactly like the Pixel 2 camera. Just select Portrait mode and shoot. It also works like a charm with the front camera.

very good results! I am impressed! Thanks for sharing.

I was able to overcome parsing error by using APK editor Pro and changing the SDK version back to 25.
App installs, but hangs every time I launch.
Help would be great

I am using Mi A1 which is currently on Android Oreo 8.0
Bt the Camera Nx is not working in it. It says couldn't connect to the camera.
What to do now????

this app is for the nexus/pixel line. not the xiaomi line.

And download "scrubber_GCam_5.1.018_25" then install it. U need root and Camera2 API enabled. It will work in Oreo and Nougat

Working Google Camera 6 for Honor 10 with Night Sight,HDR+ and Portrait Mode

There is a partially working Google Camera 6 available for Honor 10. Download this File from Arnova8G2 post here ( also thank / donate to these amazing Gcam devs ).
As expected, this has a lot of bugs. The images are a little over exposed often. It will crash with default settings and when it crashes you would need to restart the phone to make it work again ( default camera fails to open as well ). I spend a few hours trying different settings and found the Night Sight, Portrait mode and HDR+ working with the following settings. ( I am on Android 8.1 btw ). It doesn't work on EMUI 9.
Go to More -> Settings -> Advanced -> Fixes and change the 'Viewfinder Format' to PRIVATE.
What doesn't work : Front Camera, Slow Mo.
If you want to add Saturation go to HDR+ settings in the menu and increase Highlights and Shadows Saturation to your liking.

Try this. Go to HDR+ settings and adjust Saturation of Highlights and Shadows.

Yes front camera doesn't work. To adjust color - Go to HDR+ settings and adjust Saturation of Highlights and Shadows. Stay tuned for @Arnova8G2 updates in the thread mentioned in the OP for better versions.

Thanks for sharing, but the camera app crashes, it's almost impossible to use. Need to restart the phone everytime I open the Gcam app.

It works fine here. Did you maybe updated to emui 9 and that breaks it?

If you have read the main post, it clearly says it works with following settings only, else it will crash.
Go to More -> Settings -> Advanced -> Fixes and change the 'Viewfinder Format' to PRIVATE.

Clear Data of the App. Change that setting alone and see. ( dont make any additional change )
It works for all of us on Honor 10 8.1.

I've reinstalled the app, its working fine now, don't know why. Thanks.

Not working on EMUI 9.

Has anyone found improved settings? The app works fine for me, but the colors are still off in some situations, which is hard to pin point.

Change in settings > advanced > FIX > viewfinder format > use PRIVATE
AFTER CHANGE THIS OPTION YOU NEED TO RESTART PHONE
And everything should work.

Impossible, unless you re-code the app.
Pixel's dont have a sd card, so there is no provision for it.

I've installed this on my XZP w/eXistenZ Pie and my XA2 w/LOS 17.1, and I'm not sure what the appeal is. What is this supposed to be better at than the stock Sony camera app, or any other camera app?

I have found that the Gcam Go works well with HDR running on this device.
The version of the Gcam Go with partial working HDR is called:
CameraGoHDR-2.apk

Photosphere is a 360 photo. Very cool feature for me.

Google Camera on p10 lite

I searched on the net for a working gcam version on the p10 lite, and found working (not crashing) versions that were originally developed for the MI 8 by BSG.
The hdr works, too.
But the biggest drawback is that the colors do not fit. Sometimes the picture is black and white, sometimes too red.
Does anyone know a working version/good color settings?

i tried a lot and they all have the red and blue channel inverted or something like this, i think google cam works from raw and the raw record on this model is messed up.

Can u pass me the APK link?

Thank you for the link, unfortunately I can't get satisfying results, color is completely off, it's bothers me about not having enough space on the memory left (even) though there is...
All other functions than straight shooting and panorama do blackout the screen...
Don't understand this as "complaining" my only intention is to provide feedback!

Hi Guys,
i was looking for a working gcam apk too and i just tried about thirty apks from

Most apps don't even open or crash after a few seconds.
With my p10 lite (android 11 octaviOS) this and MGC_8.1.101_A9_GVv_MGC.apk app work properly.

Only the main 24mm camera has FULL support for Camera2 API. The rest of the cameras all have LIMITED support.
The telephoto camera is actually a 20MP Samsung sensor that's cropped in to output a 12MP "70mm" image.
NOTE: Judging from the specs, Camera 0 and Camera 2 are the same camera. They're just reported twice in the Camera2API info dump.

Have u tried parrot gcam 7.2 and trcamera 6? coz these gcam works on multitude of devices from Asus xiaomi LG Oneplus etc

Also just to add, I have no idea what I'm looking for but I did notice errors like "nullpointerexception" in a log when gcam crashes.
If anyone with technical knowledge would like a full log I can post one.

Can you just post the full error log here?
nullpointerexception errors are the result of code trying to reference something that doesn't exist. So for example, Gcam runs some code on startup, but that code is trying to run a function or something that doesn't actually exist on the Xperia. This causes everything to crash.

Hopefully an Android Camera2 API developer can chime in. I see where the errors are, what objects they're trying to reference, but I'm unable to find any documentation or previous questions on Stack or GitHub that could possibly point to what the problem is.

@Arnova8G2 can u please check on this error log? I think some users also reports Camera Go apk is not working on Xperia 1 II despite not requiring Camera2API. Is it not possible to run gcam at all on the Xperia 1 II?

Gcam would be so fckn awesome on this phone... I love photo pro but i want gcam for portrait and night mode.

I'd gladly donate towards this, I'm really excited to see gcam on the Xperia 1 ii. The auto mode is not the greatest currently, so the thought of gcam...... Very exciting! Especially if all lenses work too
