Is VoLTE possible - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

I have a Singapore variant of the tab S4 it makes and receives calls just fine over 3G but wont make them over LTE is VoLTE even possible on this? I travel the country and have ran into a few instances where I have LTE coverage but not 3G

It looks bad
Samsung has disabled VoLTE in every tablet that supports it, tab s3, s4, s6 and s7. It won't comment on this. I suggest contacting Samsung and asking for an update to address this issue. I understand there is a complex hack to accomplish this, but it involves editing a binary file.

If Samsung won't do it, maybe the carrier firmware can enable VoLTE?
AT&T says its Tab S4 variant will continue to work after their 3G shutdown.
Tab S4 (SM-T837A) is listed in their compatible devices:
https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf
Maybe this means VoLTE is enabled for calling? Or they might mean it will keep working but only for data LTE.

There is no carrier tab s4 that will work for calls, and I don't think sms either! The carriers have a system in which you can have data/talk/text on a samsung Tab 3,4,5,6,7,8 if you also have a samsung phone.
Samsung also has a setting you can enable to make calls on your tablet if you also have a phone, if both devices are logged into your Samsung account. No security flaw there! Not sure if the phone must be Samsung too, but it would seem so!
I'm not going to say what I think about a manufacturer going out of its way to reverse a setting, intentionally crippling its flagship products, so customers need to purchase more stuff to obtain the expected functionality!
I did write to the CEO of Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd.. I asked for a firmware update to enable VoLTE in the Tab S series beginning with the S3.
Earlier Tab S don't have compatible hardware. If you clear your browser data, so no one can tell you're a hacker, and google 'Samsung investor relations', you can find his name and address.
I'm not going to dox him here. But if anyone wants to write him, please be very civil, clean, upright, and simply ask for an update, followed by, "I only ask for Samsung to live up to its reputation! I think my request is more than reasonable! Thank you for taking your valuable time to read my message. Best Regards, name"
Don't use spinglish--words and phrases that mean one thing implied to mean something else. And example in reverse is when Dell dubbed one of its laptops exploding into flames, 'a thermal event'!
Just be direct, brief, polite and honest.

Samsung chat says:
Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Care. I’m D-- ....
... It will be updated in coming update. You will receive a notification on your tablet once it got updated.
‎8:36 PM When do you think the update will be?
‎8:37 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging We don't have the exact information. Hope it will update will release in couple of weeks.
‎8:38 PM This is due to the 3G shutdown? That will work then, with the update I'll be able to download a phone app from the app store?
Thank you
‎8:38 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging It is not about the 3G shutdown, the feature is not available on the tablet. Carrier have not permitted to use this feature on Samsung tablet. You can use caling feature on third party applications like WhatsApp ETC.
‎8:41 PM ok yes. Then I will wait for the update. Is this official it will be updated?
the tablet will be updated to download a phone app?
‎8:42 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging Yes it will be official once the Update released you will get notification on your screen.
Once you get the Update it will update automatically to make the calls.
‎8:44 PM ok thank you D

So maybe it'll be soon I'm hoping to use VoLTE for my tablet soon. Otherwise Singapore firmware might allow VoLTE calls currently? Why is that? I can't download or install or side-load any phone app currently.
edit update: I flashed to t-mobile using odin and that lets me send and receive texts just fine using messenger app. I use tello so I can place outbound calls over wifi too, so I can just use google voice for any other phone call inbound. I've heard other versions outside usa might be able to place calls though?? Suppose we'll get an update here soon anyway hopefully.

There will be convoluted ways to get data/talk/text on the Tab S models without adding VoLTE compatibility.

Like calling on other devices, if both a phone and tablet are logged in to your Samsung account, you can use your tablet for Data/talk/txt, because it's actually using the phone.

S7 Active for use outside the US (WiFi Calling and Software Updates?)

Hey folks,
I bought an S7 Active from eBay and I'm using it in Ireland. Everything is working fine that I need, but my carrier recently introduced WiFi Calling and upon trying to set it up from the setting menu where it reads
"wifi calling lets you make and receive calls over wifi with your at&t accoumt. when you use wifi calling, information about the country where the wifi connection is made will be sent to your carrier. Learn more about wifi calling (link).
GET STARTED"
I get the following error:
"Wifi Calling activation not successful, try again later"
I rang support for my carrier and they think it's something to do with the handset. They support the S7 and the S7 Edge but as the S7 Active is an AT&T exclusive and appears to have custom AT&T software, it seems like it might be trying to connect to AT&T and it can't?
Also, when I check for software updates, it says AT&T Software Update at the top of the screen, now this doesn't give any errors and it says software up to date, so I'm not sure if this is correct or if there's new software out that it can't connect to update?
Is there any way around this? I know maybe it's possible to ROOT and install a new ROM, but I'd rather avoid that hassle..
Any feedback would be great
I am in the same situation. S7 Active unlocked from EBAY, and using it in Czech Republic with Vodafone sim. Is here chance to get OTA Nougat update?
I'm using one in Canada and flashed the updates described in another thread in this phone's forum. They will reset your phone to factory, but you will have 7.0 nougat and security patches into April, 2017. I doubt any kind of OTA will be forthcoming unless you have an ATT SIM, but I'm not an expert in this at all. I plan on keeping good backups and flashing the updates as they become available. Aside from that, it's a great phone. If they make the s8 active global, then I'll look into getting one some time down the road.
Thanks for the replies. Does the S8 have an active version? I hadn't heard anything on it yet?
so when you flash nougat 7, does it completely wipe and install a new ROM on your phone, or it just updates the AT&T rom, so even with the update, you're still bound to the AT&T settings for updates/wifi calling etc?
Yes, it wipes out the phone completely, you'll have to set it up again. Everything else is same, such as AT&T bloats, wifi calling etc.
Ok thanks for letting me know. So no point I guess if it doesn't solve the issue
I live in Czech Republic. In situation, when I will buy prepaid sim card from AT T, and I will use it in my unlocked S7 Active, it is possible to get OTA Nougat update?
That's not a bad idea, would possibly work for the OTA update, but maybe not if it's not actually connected to AT&T?
It wouldn't work for the wifi calling though I'm sure?

I'm in Edmonton AB, Yes, there will be nothing for updates or WiFi calling if you are not on the ATT network with their SIM.
Which ROM did you update to, the QD4, or past it?
Keep it rolling
I'd love to know more about using the S7 Active internationally from anyone who has been down that road already. In the UK and considering getting one from Ebay but I would immediately want to update it to Nougat and I'm unsure if this will be possible? I have a Mac laptop in the house and would hope to use that to apply any upgrades. Really appreciate any info you guys have!

ODIN is only available for Windows (Vista/7/8/10). You will have to run Wine for just the Odin program or Boot Camp for the full Windows OS in a partition.
Wine is the easiest solution, start there and install the program, USB drivers.

I to am in the UK and purchased a S7 Active from Ebay. The phone came in a sealed box and worked fine. No AT&T logo at startup or bloatware. However when I rebooted the phone after switching of, an integrity error came up which forced me to wipe/erase the phone. I thought maybe a first time glitch but it did it again and all was lost. Had my old S4 Active so persevered and read info on this post to reflash firmware to QB2 using ODIN. Now note this is the first time i have ever attempted anything like this so complete newbie. However all went well and I now have a phone on Nougat. It reboots without error now. But it is now back to AT&T with logo at Startup and US voice for google navigation etc... Google pay now does work though. I am pleased with my results but would love to have firmware that makes it non AT&T specific for use in the UK, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That only works if your carrier supports RCS. That has nothing to do with Google.

I can confirm that my regular Sim is also not getting it as well. I know RCS is supposed to be available on TMobile either now or soon, so I just can't wait until it's fully implemented. I'm sick of iMessage being the only decent first party messaging service ??
No RCS on pixel phones with T mobile. TMO only supports Samsung devices and I believe one LG phone.
Very few US carriers support Universal RCS and it's usually just a few devices if it is available. The carriers publicly state their support of Universal RCS, but clearly there is little to no motivation to switch. Right now texting uses the carrier's propriety technology and they don't want to give up that control. I doubt Universal RCS will ever reach the masses even though it is clearly a better user experience.
In a timely development, it's being reported that Google will be taking control of rsc rollout by giving uses a choice to opt into a Google service. Not in the US to start, but we will see where it goes.

Samsung Smart Call

I've got unlocked Note 10+ and I flashed the U firmware because of video calling that's missing on U1. Now I found that on T Mobile version there is no Smart Call and it is replaced by T Mobile NameID, which I consider inferior and I'd have to pay for full functionality.
Anybody knows if there is any way how to get the stock Samsung dialer with Smart Call back? I'd hate to flash the U1 ROM and go through the restore process again. Even with Samsung cloud, Google and SD backups it took me almost half day to get it set as I had it before.

My past experience with Samsung Smart Call, was that i found that even though, its baked into Samsung Firmware, it is Service Provider depended. to "activate /work".
I might be wrong, but i personally believe so, based on my experience.
Just to recap, my experiences with my old Note 8 and my Note 9 (both devices not rooted)
I also flashed Stock Samsung firmware .. different CSC onto these devices.
I found on both occasions i lost the function of th Smart Call.
( Hiya services), also Volte function etc etc.
I could see the Smart Call settings in firmware, but it was greyed out.
Could not enable it at all.
When i flashed my old Samsung Firmware (Service Provider CSC) Smart Call (Hiya services), was enabled again and working.
I'm sure in your case, you'll will find it's Service Provider depended.
Good luck.

The thing is, after I purchased and set up the phone on stock Samsung firmware, VoLTE and Smart Call worked perfectly fine. But stupid me wanted to try the video calling. I found that the video calling is not different than Google Duo and I will NEVER use RTT texts. I see no real advantage from using T Mo firmware in comparison with stock Samsung (provisioned for T Mo of course)
Actually quite the opposite. For me, the signal strength and battery life is practically the same on both and again, FOR ME Smart Call is much more useful than video call and RTT.
If anyone knows any benefits from keeping T Mo firmware over stock, please enlighten me. I really don't want to go through the flashing the whole thing and restoring dance again, but I'm afraid I will have to.

Ha, your post reminds me,
that when i flashed
my branded Samsung Firmware ( Voda CSC) with the Samsung unbranded Firmware,
The reason, was also to get video calling working.
As my branded device did not have video calling option on dialer.
I could only activate video, if someone else, video called me... only then the video option, would appear.!
I then afterwards, realized that i lost my Smart Call functions. and flashed back to the branded software.
This was on my Note 9.
So i had no video call option on dialer ,but Smart Call.
Now...
again, with my branded( Voda CSC) Note 10 +,
i see that my device has video calling on dial pad.....!
So, the Service Providers, chop and changed.
A year back, they disabled video calling option, from dial pad.
Now video calling is back on the dial pad plus Smart Calls is working fine.
Good luck
So.... I bit the bullet and flashed back the U1 firmware. The only thing I lost is the video calling. I still have RTT button on my dialer. Whether it works or not I haven't tried yet. I know it wasn't there on the original dialer when I purchased the phone. Maybe because I didn't flash USERDATA? Who knows.
I'm happy I've got Smart Call back.
CSC N975U
Good afternoon, I have the n975u model, my question is what firmware should I install, to get the smart call and video calls by duo?. Or is csc the one that has these functions active?
Thanks!!
excuse my english, google translator.
I have a Verizon Note10+ running Android 11 (3.1) I paid my cell off 4 mo ago. Verizon confirmed for me that my cell is carrier unlocked. I've tried everything to get the Smart Call app on my phone to work. The only thing I haven't tried is rooting it cause I don't know how. I have 3 versions of the apk and can't make them work. Can anyone help?

How to set up on Verizon.

Hey guys. I'm on Verizon and currently am on my Essential Phone and just bought a 7T and was wondering how to go about switching it. Back when the 6T came out I know you had to call Verizon and tell them to switch it to a CDMA-less device and do some other things but wasn't sure if it got a little more streamlined with the 7T. I did read one article from a website that just says I need to switch the SIM and then go into My Verizon, log in and activate. Is that accurate? Anyone with experience in this? Thanks in advance.
I've switched 3 lines to OP 7Ts. All that I did was log into my Verizon, find the switch device option, type in IMEI and it automatically added CDMA less, advanced calling....and I just followed the directions given in the screen....all 3 work great!

I ran into my own slew of issues getting my phone activated on verzion (t-mobile oneplus 7t, already carrier unlocked).
Here's my experience.
I went into the verizon store and they could not activate my phone based on its IMEI. That said, they took the sim from my pixel and popped it in and phone calls worked no issue. I could also send text, but could not receive them.
It took a few calls, but I eventually had to get to tier 2 tech support where they manually had to key in my device info so it could be activated on Verizon (wasn't in their device database). It was showing up as unknown device before then in their system and in the my verizon app. They said it would take 24-48 hours before it would be in the data base. About 24 hours later, I checked the My Verizon app and found it was now listed as a OnePlus 7T UNL and showed the device image.
After doing that, I had to call into support again and ask them to add Feature #83856 be added to the line (I had done this before on two other calls by requesting CDMA-Less be added, that didn't work as the techs had no clue what I was talking about and wanted to pawn me off onto One Plus support). Just ask for the feature number as they can look it up and add it to your line fairly easily. The moment they added that feature to my account, my texts started pouring in.
Hope this is helpful if you run into any similar issues that I did. I love this phone so far, hopefully they will streamline this setup in the future as I made multiple trips to verizon and called into support at least a dozen times before figuring out the best way to approach this. Expect tier 1 support to have no idea what you actually need 90% of the time and keep pushing for a T2 escalation if your device shows up as unknown in their system.
I've also read that if the device shows up in the system and you're having issues, getting a new sim may correct without having to worry about having features added/removed from the line as it should auto provision the features (according to T2 tech) when activating a new sim on a 1+ phone that is already in their system.

Coverage has been great, I haven't run into any issues honestly vs having a cdma compatible phone previously (pixel 3 xl). Data speeds have been just as good. I did flash my firmware to the international version to get quicker updates and remove the T-mobile apps and tweaks.
One thing I didn't tell them the whole time I was adding my phone to their system was that this was a T-Mobile OnePlus 7t. I just told them it was an unlocked OnePlus 7t I purchased online. This was before I flashed the international software, so nothing on their end flags you as having the T-Mobile version unless you tell them. Not sure if they would deny you or use that as a reason to send you on the way otherwise.

Do you think this is still possible. I bought a hd1907 T-Mobile and it's on way, had the store give me the IMEI so I could activate before it got here. Website says incompatible. Messaged them and they said the same thing. Should I just wait and put in my sim then go from there?
So is it possible to use Verizon on the HD1905 dual sim phone just the same as the T mobile model? I actually switched 2 of my lines to AT&T just to be able to own this phone. No texting was the deal breaker for me.
BTW, is anyone getting wifi calling with verizon?

VZW allows wifi calling on Verizon branded 8's, but won't activate wifi calling on the 7 series. The claim is that the 7's could be a network security hazard because they never went through Verizon's testing.
This is Verizon's decision, not OP's.

I don't even have Visual Voicemail on my HD1900. I will be switching to the Pixel 5 or the S21 because this and the no wifi calling.
I made the wifi calling sacrifice for a dual sim phone. OTOH, I can always use Google voice for wifi calling if needed.

I am using 2 VZW sims, and Google Messages works just fine on both. No problem with inserting sending or receiving photos from Google Photos or any other source.
I guess most nonVZW phones cant do RCS, exept for the pixel, AFAIK.
I am not sure about, if people with iPhones can text me?
Maybe you have a setting or permission problem.

How to Record Calls on SM-N975U1 Android 10 (Samsung Note 10+)

Hello Everyone, I hope this is not a noob question...
I bought an unlocked Samsung Note 10+ SM-N975U1 directly from Samsung... Long story short - Samsung said it could record calls, then after my return window expired and several calls with Samsung Techs, they finally admitted that this "feature is locked" and I'm stuck with this $#!T.
I have tried several different call recording apps, and none work.
So my question is, Can someone tell me how to enable call recording on this phone? or direct me to link with the answer...
I really appreciate any help.
I have been looking for answers with no luck
Any one can help
Call Recorder - ACR by NLL works fine.

I am going to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against Samsung, because they mislead me to be believe that this phone did and had the ability to record calls. They kept saying that it should be fixed in the next software update 2 or 3 times, then after my return window expired, they said this feature is disable and there is no fix. At the same time, they said that the you cannot return this phone. This is fraud and deceptive business practices.
I bought an unlocked phone directly from samsung to avoid having rooting issues and all the carrier bloatware... instead i get this ****.

I tried it too, but for whatever reason, it only records my voice and not the caller. Thanks for the suggestion.
It's not possible without rooting.

It does, it depends on the country and state. Also if you get carrier branded vs unlocked...
Google Dialer
I know some people have found success using the new Google dialer app, which has call recording baked in. I haven't tested myself, but it may warrant further research if it is truly possible.
