About the punch hole and 18:9 videos - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

I have notice that when I am watching videos on my phone (mostly YouTube, but also playing mp4) the phone automatically center the video when playing which is fine for 16:9 videos, because the punch hole is out of the way, but when you're watching 18:9 content, half of the punch hole show up, but if you turn on the hide punch hole option in settings, the whole video will shift to the side and the punch hole is gone, the problem with this is that the option is system-wide, which is annoying. Is there a way to enable this option for a specific app?

Yes, it happens when full screen

You can do that with Tasker.

What screen mode is the video player?

i.e. the saturation/sharpness changes when playing something in video player
This is kind of hard to explain but if you play a video and watch the display difference especially noticable in the status bar at the top
What is this and is there any way to use it as the default display setting?

Movie mode, I'd presume. I guess I didn't notice it since I'm always in "Natural" mode, which is pretty close to "Movie" mode in terms of contrast etc.

why video apps do not utilize the entire screen?

Slingplayer, Xfinity, MX player etc...aside from Google Play movies, I have not found a video app that uses the full 6" screen. Slingplayer and Xfinity leave what looks to me to be over 1/4" of the screen on the right side blacked out. Is this universal or an issue with my phone? Is there a setting somewhere I haven't found to force full screen for video?
I am completely stock 8.1 at the moment...I don't think I should have to do something via adb like forcing immersive mode for something like being able to use my whole screen to watch video???
thanks for any and all input
I think this has to do with the apps themselves being updated to support the aspect ratio. As of now some apps support it and others dont, in time they will update.
It's likely because our screen is 1440 pixels x 2880 pixels (an 18:9 ratio). Most video conform to the regular 16:9 ratio. Because our screen is slightly wider than traditional, there are basically three options:
- Leave empty space as unused on the left/right side of the screen, which is default for most video apps that would otherwise be full screen. The video remains properly proportioned.
- Stretch the video to fill the screen. This would cause slight distortion on the video.
- Zoom the video to fill the screen. This causes you to lose a tiny bit on the top/bottom of the image, and might result in a tiny tiny bit of loss-of-clarity. But the video remains properly proportioned and unskewed. You can zoom in on YouTube videos with a pinch gesture to see this in action.
I'm sure that some more apps will likely adapt similarly to YouTube, but it may take some time.

Weird YouTube Glitch

Does anyone else experience this? When I go from portrait to landscape, this white bar appears on the bottom of the screen. It goes away when I tap the screen. I have searched and searched but no answer. I've factory reset, done everything it still shows up. Even across roms. It happens on oos as well as every other room I've tried. Please help!
Yup, experiencing the same, no solution so far.
Also another one: app refuses to go into landscape mode after a first launch when video is loaded (it does on main screen etc). I have to press the full-screen button to go into landscape and then it works normally with gyro sensor.

Just do a pinch to zoom gesture and the bars are disappearing.
Is has to do with the screen ratio.
I have this bug / feature only when the video quality is not HD.
I thought that the video is getting smaller because it looks sharper then on 480p
BTW: what phone are you using? It doesnt look like an oneplus 3.
Then why are you posting this glitch on this area of the forum?

It is a screenshot from the YouTube app. He's watching a video about the Pixel, on the OP3 and as you can see, the white bar is on the screen.

Screen extension YT

I noticed today the drawback of expanding the YT image to the entire screen (gesture with two fingers).Well, horizontally widening results in vertical truncation
it is perfectly visible on such material, where at the bottom or top of the movie there are data, subtitles, eg here: https://youtu.be/M9sd3spUo_g

That’s normal on all non 16:9 devices playing 16:9 material.
The video gets just zoomed in. If you would align it to fill up the screen without loosing anything the video gets distorted.
Only a 18:9 video will work without cutting anything of and showing no black borders.

Kinda disappointed with the N10+

Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is amazing.
There are just more software issues which are on Samsung.
The always on charging status which will burn the screen
The always on fingerprint while AOD is on which will also burn the screen
Lack of camera resolution settings (actual size of pictures on 4:3 are around 2MB?!?) and pictures are not good as on Note9 or S10
And the feature that I'm missing really much is swipe on fingerprint sensor to drop notification menu down, but on the other hand, face recognition works so damn fast that I don't even need fingerprint.
And speakers could be better, they are dull, without much base.
Hmmm,
I wonder about that possiblity of burning the screen
Yes speakers could be better
But what do you mean no camera resolution settings? I don't even see 4:3 in the options
I wonder if the AOD stuff moves slightly every so often to prevent burn in.
UPDATE: Fingerprint AOD moves slightly every several seconds. I haven't tested the battery charging one since I'm testing my battery usage and SOT so I don't want to mess with my charge cycle right now.

There is aspect ratio on the top when you are in the camera (4:3, 16:9, full and 1:1) but you can't change the resolution (MPxs) in the settings, so I'm just getting low quality 2MB pictures.
The possibility for burn ins is great, trust me.

I wasn't looking that much because I disabled it as soon as I saw fingerprint sensor enlighten.
The clock should move a couple of pixels each minute, but I can't confirm that. Sensor will stay there forever.
EDIT: you are actually correct, that **** is moving.
Ok, so now, just that annoying charging notification stays forever in the same place.

Resolution settings are in camera settings. You are not stuck with 2MP pictures.
You're worried about the fingerprint symbol burning in, but not the clock on AOD? Just set AOD to "tap to wake."
My speakers are super loud and clear. But at the end of the day, they are cell phone speakers. You can adjust sound quality by turning on Dolby Atmos and/or changing the equalizer.
As far as swiping the fingerprint reader to pull down the notification shade, why not just set home screen setting to pull it down on a swipe down?

I would still like if I can disable it from the screen since I know that sensor is there, no need to have it enlightened.

Dolby Atmos is in quick settings in the pulldown.
Equalizer is in Settings - Sounds And Vibration - Advanced Sound Settings

I was wrong about one thing, you can NOT change MPs in settings. But it takes pics in 12 MPs on the rear camera, except the ultra wide angle, which is a 16 MP lense. The FFC is a 10 MP camera. Are you sure you're not talking about 2 MB? As in megabytes, the file size?
And again, if you're not worried about the clock on AOD causing burn in, then the FO scanner won't either. Now the charging status I agree with.

I see what you're saying. But for me I need it there. I kept missing it till I turned on AOD which helped a lot. Also I am glad this fingerprint is so much better than the S10 plus. I hated it on the S10

My wife has the S10+ and even though this is supposedly the same FP scanner I think it's much better.

It seems that I do not have resolution settings. I shooted for over one hundred of pictures and not a single one was over 2.5MB, with compression disabled.
About AOD, we figured that both clock and sensor light are moving so that's fine.
About swiping down, that works on home screen only, not in apps or wherever you are.

2.5MB is about right for a 12MP JPEG file. That's the size they are on all my other phones. I have to take pics for work, then compress them down under 2MB to email them. Sometimes I don't even have to compress them, because at full quality they are already under 2.5MB.
And I understand your point on the swipe down. I never thought of that.

That's strange because on the Note 9, pictures were around 4MBs, never under 3.5MB with 4:3 and 12mpx.
My coworker still has Note 9 and we were comparing them, and pictures are bigger on his phone.
There is still hope for both FP sensor light and charging status once they update GoodLock I believe.

I stand corrected. When I check details in the Gallery, my 12.2 MP pics are between 3.5MB and 4.5MB.
That is weird then.
This may sound dumb, but the biggest gripe I have with this phone is the power button being on the left. I'm so used to it being on the right and touching there and nothing happens!
I also wish the power button was on the right side. I loved the phone once I turned on High Performance mode and changed the screen mode to Vivid. In camera settings, I also had to change the rear and front video size to UHD.
What I hate the most about this phone right now is how high the interference is on my daily routine since Wednesday. First night I got it I skipped the gym. Then boyfriend duties are getting neglected. Boss at work is asking why I'm not getting as much done. Smh
