Color saturation & accuracy - Xiaomi Mi A3 Real Life Review

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Xiaomi Mi A3's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.

I think Xiaomi Mi A3's display is over saturated, so colors appear much deeper than they really are. It looks good but not that accurate.

The colours are super-saturated and that's a bad thing. You'll notice it when you put a phone next to it and open same picture on both phones.
This really affects you if you post images on social media very often

So, is there a way to desaturate the colours? And by how many % to make the phone show the real colours?

Install custom ROM

Stock ROM has no native option to calibrate colours. You can install any custom ROM that has the option. I use Evolution X. It has a live display option where you can calibrate the display manually.
RED 83
GREEN 88
BLUE 100
The above values makes the screen look so much better, with much more accurate colours. Images from GCam now look a lot better.
If anybody has a better option or different values that work better, please let me know.

I used these values:
RED 83
GREEN 85
BLUE 85
Setting blue to 100 made my screen more bluish which was looking strange to me, these settings works fine for me.

Is puts me in a tough position. am really Confused i have been just thinking to be active on Insta.
Now if we are not seeing real colors on A3 what's the Fix for that?
Also any know what color Combination iPhone Uses?
Edit: After Browsing a Lot there are some users claim that the saturation is Not that high some are saying it is. Different people different comment :/
Can anyone Put Side by Side? amoled to amoled to see if there is something high or not?

I think you got used to IPS, in my opinion A3 screen has good color reproduction; I had many Samsung phones in my hand, so I got used to AMOLED color saturation; it would be way better if A3 supported sRGB profile though, while I don't think it is bad, it could be better.

[Q] A few questions about Perseus, Color Calibration etc.

Excuse the n00bity, but could someone explain what the flashing the Perseus does as far as color calibration goes? It does say the color calibration is better than iPhone - so how does it work? Does it look more "natural" in natural mode? Would I notice much difference (barring resolution and brightness) when it comes to color reproduction compared to other LCD devices?

Flash perseus, and you get much true colors than saturated ones that comes with s-amoled. If you haven't noticed, there's a slight green-ish tint to the white, which you can get rid of. And obviously you can tweak the calibrations to set the screen to make adjustments that suits you. You'll lose the screen modes, though.
Lots of audio enhancements and stuff like that too. Really a must flash IMHO.

basically perseus rom comes with an app called 's tweaks.' under display settings within this app you can enable something called 'master sequence.' you can toggle it on and off instantly without rebooting. the effect of it is that you get more 'realistic' and natural colors and not the bright saturated colors you would get using amoled samsung phones normally.
i personally prefer the bright saturated colors but the only way you will know is by trying it out for yourself.

You can change the white balance, but that's about it. You should be happy because most other amoled screens are painfully oversaturated. I feel this is just the right amount.
I dont know but does it look accuracy as LCD?I mean all amoled screen are pinky

I agree. Most AMOLED screens, like Sammy's, are way too rich in color. This is the first display I've seen to hit it just on the mark. I prefer a little washed out/natural display, in terms of color balance. This phone has an excellent color pallete.
This phone was way way better whites than the Note 4 and 6P I had before.
However at low brightness Greys appear greenish. Very noticeable.

I've never held a oneplus 3 and I've read the anandtech review but would average Joe notice? Most reviewers said it's good nothing outstanding.
Unfortunately my Oneplus 3 has an unevenness in color display!
In the upper part of the screen, the colors become a bit more reddish, while in the lower part the tint becomes a bit more greenish.
This especially can be seen when turning brightness down.
Once seen, this can't be unseen and makes me very much think of returning the unit!
Is there anything else who has different hues in different parts of the screen?
Blueish
I don't like the blueish colours, oversaturation and small text rendering on my OP3.
Even colour temperature setting can't fully fix the blueish colours
Not sure why a lot of people are having issues with their contrast and saturation. My display is perfect. Blues are completely accurate, as well as every other color. This is hands down the best display I have seen. I love it. Blows Sammy's over exuberant color pallet away. This is all I did to adjust the display...
I had the Nexus 6P and that AMOLED is probably the best calibrated display and much sharper than OP3. I don't think it's a huge deal breaker here since the phone is so much faster, easier to hold and use. I really wanted to like the 6P but it just didn't have enough customizations even though custom roms are plenty.
I love the display. Its so much better than on the 1+1. Those blacks and colors.
I'm a very picky user for most everything on my phone. I have extreme ocd. I believe everyone's screen is different. My display in my OP3 is better than my S6 and my S4 as well as my honor 5x and Nexus 6p. It may also be preference because as I do love amoleds, this one is a bit duller than usual samoleds but more accurate. I have no color transitions no color issues at all. I have my white balance bar about 88% up to max. Personally, to me its looking excellent. Everyone's screen must differ.

it is absolutely possible that it feels good to a not so keen user.
Also there's a possibility of better calibration via XDA devs

Completely agree with you. At first I thought it was just me. Coming from various devices including 6P,G4,Moto X Pure and N5 the screen on this 3 is terrible.
I've always preferred AMOLED over LCD as I found it easier on the eye. Returning my 3 as it's causing me eye strain (don't play games,Facebook etc).

s-RGB mode is great, except for the white balance, it's a tad too warm/yellow.
Want to share my screen settings, I personally love AMOLED colors but I hate yellowish tint, so I tuned it up a bit to get cold white:
1. Install Kernel Adiutor.
2. Go to Screen section.
3. Red 205, Green 225, Blue 256 (default).
4. Save.
That's it. Keep in mind that this is completely personal choice.

sRGB is supposed to be like that, though. I also find the warmer screen easier on the eyes in bed.

Problem with that is really each screen is different, whereas the sRGB calibration is the same for every display, as far as I know.
I only use the sRGB mode as i hate oversaturated colours and always prefer colour accuracy in all circumstances. As mentioned above the colour temp is a bit off, but overall the sRGB mode is the lesser of all evils. Is it just me or do the colours pop a little more in sRGB since the Nougat update? Before the update i felt the colours were a little under-saturated but i'm happy with it now.
How people can live with the disgusting neon AMOLED colour space is beyond me.
Screen is a downgrade. Very strong yellowish tint. Not happy at all.
I use Official RR and there is option for screen color in %. What to do for it ? How to Calibrate it ? Thanks in andvance.

For everyone using sRGB just modify rgb values and set green to 248 and red to 249. You'll love it
Would it be weird to say I like the saturation of the default colors
Me too. I like stock. One day when i will root the device maybe i will change but i like very much default colours
One of the best 1080p AMOLED displays that I've used. Of course, it isn't as impressive as the QHD Samsung panels though not really far off. The whites on my display seem good to my eyes. I can easily notice the yellowish warm whites on AMOLED screens but I don't seem to notice anything like that on my unit. My unit luckily has good whites (not too warm/cold) and no pink or green tint.
Though I've been an AMOLED fan for years, this my first phone with an AMOLED display. The colors do seem a bit too saturated at times but it is a gorgeous display. The sRGB mode is nice for when you need color accuracy but it is just too washed out for my taste.
Only real "defect" in this display is the purple ghosting effect which can be observed while scrolling grey elements on black backgrounds in low brightness but this issue is inherent to AMOLED and I've seen it on all AMOLED devices I've laid my eyes on.

Both kernels supports color control and works the same so either can produce accurate colors, you just need to know the proper color values settings
here's the best profile by far:
saturation intensity = 33
screen value = 127
screen contrast = 121
let me know if it's good.

you need bootloadr unlocked and root and a custom kernel like franco blu spark or boeffla for that. stock kernel does not support that

I hope samsung reads this!
I had posted this on another thread. But it is a real issue!
I'm having a serious problem with color saturation and actualy changing colors of objects. Im guessing that is related to color saturation. But burnt brown is not orange, turquois is not regular blue. Light blue is not white, reds are not orange or a kids red paint color.. This has some serious issues. I do jewelry and cabochons from natural materials IE Stone and metals.. This is swful! There also seems to be a lack of when different colors in the same spectrumare together being blended or blurred. One stone i have has some blue and green, cream and light cream.. light cream is white.. it cant differetiate there the blue and green mixed together and picks one. I can go on and on..
I also took the time to try and get some sunset photo's.. Didn't get one no matter how hard i tried... it made it daylight, it canceled out all the colors of the sunset.
Camera is awful! unneeded light added on all photos, can't find a way to adjust properly or tell it NOT TOO!. color balance.. what color balance.. changes hues of all colors. objects with multiple close colors merge into one flat color.. pulls a color in the back of front color through. reds... forget it! This is worse the my s7
I waited to get another phone thinking upgrades would be made.. this is a STEP BACKWARDS.. a few steps!
Have a similar problem
Have a similar problem
Colors are pale(Mainly skin color)
The colours of the display are the most accurate you could get on a mobile device, however this panel seems to appear slightly reddish compared to previous generations, this is because of the hardware blue light filter.
Enabling Vivid mode and choosing a colder temperature completely solves the problem.

You must have a defective unit, my sunset looks as it was when I took the photos. It wasn't the most colorful of sunsets but it is as it was. No color misrepresentations here. Action photos look fine to me as well. Yes, I realize this section is meant for the display but I had to reply to your rant.

Correct me if I'm wrong, sliding the slider to blue side should be cooler and warm the other end right?
Photo with no sunset color is the s10. The other is a camera program off playstore. That one is pretty dark for the closer objects but picked up the color.
I'm not ready to give up on the phone. Other then this issue I love the phone.

Does this effect the camera operations of just screen mode... I'm having an issue of the camera throwing out WAY too much white. Warmer obviously makes it yellowish. I dont use the Blue light filter. makes my screen yellow

On the sliders.. Blue is supposed to be cool and orange/red warm.. My siders are doing the opposite!! Am I wrong?

Screen Calibration

Can anyone share their screen calibration settings? I wanna get the best whites possible. On my N9 I used to decrease the reds all the way to zero and my greens about halfway but this is a new phone with a different display and those settings aren't doing the same thing. So I just wanted to know what everyone was doing. Thanks.
I think natural mode supposed to be pretty much calibrated already and if you still wanted to tweak it more there is cool/warm white balance slider and rgb sliders.
There is whole bunch of tests here http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_Note10_ShootOut_1G.htm.

Natural mode can't be further adjusted. You have to choose Vivid to adjust RGB and color temp.
As far as best settings, it's difficult to say what yours should be. If the Note 10 is anything like the Note 8 or Note 9, you can lay four of them down next to each other with stock settings and they will all be different.
My Note 10+ seemed to have too much green tint and maybe just slightly cool. I left temp alone and just knocked green down one notch. But honestly, these screens are so close to perfect you can just leave it stock. Just play around with it, adjust it back and forth until it looks good to YOU. You're the one staring at it.
I have compared four Note 10+'s side by side, and all had different white points. Also, Natural mode was significantly greenish (maybe slightly yellow too) on all four devices. Personally, I feel like my Note8 has a better panel.
According to article I linked above and here again http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_No...hootOut_1G.htm Natural mode supposed to be calibrated and automatically switch between sRGB and DCI-P3 depending on content. (I guess sRGB for pictures and web, DCI-P3 for 4k TV) and can't be easily adjusted. Then there is Vivid mode which uses full color gamut, display is capable of showing and you can adjust it with sliders to your liking or calibrate using instruments. I can't tell you if all phones are properly adjusted at factory (probably not), but according to article the one they had was right on the money and mine seems to be fine as well. BTW the eye can be easily fooled and calibrating instruments are the proper way to adjust it, if you need it. Yet, it is my phone, I don't use it for pro use, so I adjust it the way I like it and mine is set as vivid and gray seems to be neutral gray as far as I can tell without any tinkering. YDMW.

One of the failings on Android, no color calibration.
You simple can't do it by eye and get all the parameters right.
It's fine for viewing but not editing photos until a company like Spyder steps up to the plate with a 3rd party calibration apk and tool.
Mine seemed best in natural mode with a slight amount of red added with an overlay apk and night mode turned at about the 10 or 20% level.
Lol, enough.
Just don't edit photo colors, temps etc. with or you may get a very rude surprise.
