Carrier Aggregation - Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Questions & Answers

I have the 64GB Global version
Last Miui 10.3.4.0
I live in Argentina, we use this four LTE bands: 2 - 4 - 7 - 28
The phone can connect ok to those four bands individually but I think don’t is not doing CA, not even 2CA
My previous phone Samsung A5 2016 did 2CA ok, I don't remember exactly all the combinations, but I think 7+28 and 4+28 for sure
First of all, how to see if Mi9SE is doing CA without root? I use *#*#4636#*#* and Cellular-Z app
The phone claims to support 3CA; but which are the available combinations?
Tested also the app "NetMonster"; there its shows up to 4CA which I think is fake, so I discard this app.
Thank you in advance!

Yes this device support 3CA, here is supported combinations: https://cacombos.com/device?model=M1903F2G
Yes Netmonster doesn't show correctly. There is app called Network Signal Guru what show real data but require root.

Can I infer I'm doing Carrier Aggregation?

Hello guys,
I'm using USA stock ROM and the main drawback (for me) is the missing network icon that shows when you're doing carrier aggregation. In Taiwanese ROM it's indicated by 4G+ but there's no icon in USA ROM for this type of network so the only option to see if you're connected to two or more bands is rooting and using Network Guru.
As I'm not root and I don't plan to I captured a log using LTE Discovery in an area that supposedly have carrier aggregation using bands 7 and 28. From the connections that my phone made I noted that there're some connections to bands 7 and 28 in the same antenna (same PCI) in a short period of time.
Can I infer I'm using carrier aggregation? Before I transformed my HTC 10 to USA 4G+ worked with default Taiwanese ROM however with the USA ROM I can't verify this.
Please look at the screenshot I attached.
Thank you guys.

Turn off wifi. It won't show when you are connected to it because you are using wifi instead of mobile data.
Thank you for your reply. The log I'm showing was recorded indeed in a zone where I don't have WiFi connection and where the phone connected to B7 and B28 LTE bands (but not sure if it was doing carrier aggregation, using the two bands together).
Maybe you got confused as when I took the screenshot of the log I was in my house with WiFi connection.
Anyway what I'm saying is that USA stock ROM show 4G LTE icon for both, one band and two bands (CA) in comparison with TW that shows 4G for one band and 4G+ for two bands.

how to use lte-advanced and enable carrier aggregation?

Hi, I know snapdragon 650 has cat 7 lte modem and is capable of lte-advanced which in my area is supported, also i have enabled all frequency bands of my snapdragon bands with QXDM,QPST and i see two frequency bands with network guru app but my phone can't do the carrier aggregation.
My guess: xiaomi must have done some thing to make it work
Any body has any idea how to make it work?
I have root access with resurrection remix ROM
Works for me fine on unofficial lineage without any tweaking, I had the LTE + icon showing and did a speed test and got 119Mbps

UMTS/HSDPA/3G not connecting on MIUI 8 for anyone else?

I have an issue with every build I've tried of MIUI 8 (Stable versions), but not with the developer versions of MIUI 9.
The phone will not connect to UMTS/3G networks with either sim. LTE works fine, and there's no GSM where I live so I can't test that.
It will connect for a moment when first booting up the phone, then immediately disconnect and stay disconnected. It can't find 3G networks when searching either.
Again, this doesn't happen on MIUI 9 builds, but I figure this big of a bug, they would never release it as stable. Can anyone else let me know if they've had this problem?
Hello, I`m having same issue, here in this way. In town there are many repeaters. Here is no problem, in germany many 4G-Networks are working in band 20 (800 mhz). In areas, where no 4G/lte is possible, the mi mix2 (china stable miui8 and china dev miui9) the mix2 can not connect to 3G/UMTS. A smartphone Redmi note 4 with this SIMCard connects to 3G/UMTS and gets connection data to HSDPA+. The mi mix icon diasappears and there is a "emergency" Icon. Then the mi mix2 connect only to GSM and after 1-2 minutes get Data to EDGE. But at this place it is possible to connect to 3G. I rebooted the device many times, changes sim to other slot. Tried China dev and stable. Last test with XIAOMI.EU and EPICROM for MIX2 are sad. Same issue
Many MIX2-User have this effect. I have this effect on Sim-Cards from provider Telefonica/O2. I have tried 3 Sim-cards from provider O2. No 3G - Connect.
In germanys-forums the is a hint to define "force 3G-Connects". Some user writes, that they do not have this effect with this definition.
Does have XIAOMI a 3G-Bug with new MIMIX2??

The default Setting for this SIM is: LTE/TD-SCDMA/WCDMA... this is almost wrong, because we havent TD-SCDMA in Germany, i ve switched to LTE/UMTS RPL ...this seems to work better with my o2 card.
Sometimes the connection breaks down from LTE or LTE+ to H+ ...but after the break down, i have no data connection. If i activate flight mode and re enable data, i also get H+ but for now with data connecting. This is very frustrating
Also that my Settings to LTE/UMTS are removed after a reboot or i switch to the second sim. Any suggestions to fix it permanent to LTE/UMTS ?
Did anyone tried MI MIX 2 Global - Version?´ Bug exists still there?
I am on 9.1
I set it on LTE/TD-SCDMA/GSM. I live in Germany too and have a O2 card.
GSM is slower than UMTS cause it's older. But it works without problems.
Now I trying with LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS. I have to say that I have some problems too.

sim 1 + data card : o2
sim 2 as voice card: D1
if i make a call with sim 1 / D1 my first sim as data sim loose the data connection, even it is connected to a lte network...strange thing today i had a conf call over sim2 for about 4 hours, while this time i didnt recieve any mail or whatsapp.
but if i set sim 2 / D1 as data card and make a voice call, this card wont loose data....strange, maybe a o2 issue?
edit: made a test with D1 as data and if make a call with the o2 card, also d1 loose data instant
I have a new (2.nd) MI MIX 2. And: I have the same Problem. O2 is switching vom GSM/EDGE to UMTS an gets no Connect. Then only "EMRGENCY CALLs". And then GSM again. o2 is provider. roaming is on.
With second SIM (Vodafone) there is no problem. Is there a fix for that problem? One member wrote there is a new "radio". Where to find it?
Same SIM (o2) in a REDMI NOTE 4 (LTE Band 20 800 MHZ) is "ok". It is an MI MIX 2 - Problem!
I have the MIUI 9 Global.

change network to LTE/UMTS PRL ...then it should work better PRL = prefered roaming list; go to settings -> about phone -> tap several times on the info about internal storage -> the network app will appear, now you can change network settings... until next boot, then you have to set it again
maybe mix 2 has a problem with national roaming?! cause o2 uses national roaming -> their own network and the network from e-plus
Yes, the MIX 2 does have issues with switching to anything other than LTE. Even when it says it switched to H or H+ there is actually no reception at all and it takes a few minutes for it to recover. Really annoying, hopefully the engineers fix this issue as soon as possible. Pretty inexcusable bug for such a device.
Hello, Switching to " LTE/UMTS PRL" has the effect, only UMTS/3G-Connections are possible. No LTE/4G. Provider: German O2.
XIAOMI might have to fix this bug.
Q: Has anyone took a Message to [email protected] ?? http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=bugfeedback&fid=5&page=1

LTE/UMTS PRL fixed that for me totaly ... i dont had any issues since them! I am also getting LTE and LTE-A with o2 and i am travelling a lot due to my job in germany.
i think its also problem with o2 and national roaming. if you search for this problem in google, you will find the same issue reports from other devices within in the o2 network. I did never had the same problems with my other D1 card in the same device.
LTE/UMTS does not work for me.
Since yesterday I use LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS and it works fine.
Provider: O2 Germany
It looks like 3G/HSPA doesn't work when roaming (possibly local roaming too). LTE works fine. In the UK I can get internet all the time regardless of connection type. I travelled abroad and only LTE worked using my UK SIM. This also happens on AOSP based ROMs since I'm using Resurrection Remix and still experienced the issue.

Yes, this is clearly a firmware-level issue. They need to fix their modem.

[GUIDE][US998][TMO] Access to TMO Hidden Menu / Add Remove Bands (Band 71)

PREREQUISITES:
- US998 only
- Bootloader unlocked
- Rooted
RECOMMENDED:
Full system backup in case you don’t like what you’ve done.
NEED TO KNOW:
Performing these steps will remove the “default” unlocked bands. I have not figured how to get band to default. So insert disclaimer here about me, XDA, LG, and whoever you got your phone from being responsible for your phone.
HOW TO:
1. Go to play store and download “Shortcut Master (Lite):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster.lite
Or support the dev and download the full version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster
2. Launch Shortcut Master and grant it root access.
3. Select the 3 dot menu and select “Search…”
4. Verify “All apps” are being searched on the left. Click the “Enter text to search” and type in “BandSelection” and select “Search”
5. You should see 5 items in the results. Select the “Hidden Menu com.lge.hiddenmenu.tmo_only.LTEBandSelection”option. In the subsequent popup select “favorite”. In the subsequent menu you can rename the shortcut to whatever you like or keep the default name shown. Select “Add” to complete the favorite selection. You should then be brought back to the 5 item search results.
6. repeat step 5 and select “Hidden Menu com.lge.hiddenmenu.tmo_only.BandSelection” and repeat this step to add it as a favorite. Once done, hit the back menu button and this will return you to your 2 newly created favorite shortcuts.
7. Select the “LTEBandSelection” shortcut (or whatever name you renamed it) to launch the LTE Band Selection app.
8. Click the checkboxes for the bands you desire. Obviously as a TMO’er I would recommend Bands 2, 4, 12, 66, and 71 as these are the bands in use in the US. If you travel overseas you’ll need to select other bands.
9. Click “Save” and you should see a “Save Succeeded” toast if your selections were successful, otherwise you will see “Save Failed”. At a minimum, I believe you need at least 1 LTE band (2, 4, or 12). Additionally, you cannot select the whole shebang of bands as well.
10. At this point you are done and the selected bands will be active. You can verify the selected bands to be active by backing out of the menu back to your favorites, and select “BandSelection”. You should see your selected bands under LTE BAND. WCDMA / GSM should remain as Default unless you decided to mess with it.
Q: How do I get my LTE BAND back to default?
A: Dunno at this point. You figure it out and let us know.
Q: Can I reset everything back to whatever I had originally?
A: Restore that backup! Or factory reset I suppose…
I have yet to personally verify Bands 66 (extension of Band 4) and 71, but I would imagine it should work. You can verify the selected bands using another app like LTE Discovery. It shows you exactly what bands your phone is currently getting. I have confirmed that selecting single bands will only allow you access to that band (i.e you select BAND 2, you only get that band and no others).
THANKS:
@vndnguyen for Shortcut Master
EDIT - Added some screenshots from the app...
EDIT - I verified carrier aggregation goes away if I deselect Band 66 while connected to Band 4.

I'm guessing, but I think it depends on whether the bands are CA bands, or not. Some are dependent on another. For instance with band 66 which is a CA band for band 4. I don't think you can just select 66 without selecting 4.
I'm still experimenting with it and I'll update as I find out more.
EDIT: Band 10 is not available in the tmobile menu. However, I was able to select 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,12,13,66,and 71 without issue.

EDIT - I should give you a better answer...I have confirmed that selecting bands in this menu does indeed change the bands that are able to be received by the handset. As I am in the USA and on tmobile, I was only able to confirm bands 2,4,and 12. If I travel about an hour north, I can confirm 71.

I understand what you are asking. It's confirmed this process adds those bands to the LTE bands list, but you are asking for proof if there's actually reception. You would need a T-mobile user with US998 and T-mobile SIM card in an area that has LTE band 66 or the very new LTE band 71.
That proof will come soon...

Although i can't remember exactly off hand. I believe it was posted somewhere that the T-Mobile version actually supported bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 20, 28, 29, 30, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46, 66, and 71.

Hi guys, I have a T-Mobile V30 and whenever I hit Reset at the bottom of the Band Selection menu, everything goes back to normal. Ie, I've locked to B71 only then hit reset and B2, B4, B71 all connect just fine, and CA where applicable. PS: there is another menu called "LTE Band Selection" and it does not have Reset at the bottom. BE VERY CAREFUL if you encounter this menu, I almost screwed up my phone until I found the "Band Selection" menu.
Since you have root, Network Signal Guru is also another tool to assist in locking bands and or verifying what's activated and deactivated.
If you have any more questions about the V30's engineering menu, Network Signal Guru, or B71 let me know.

But this is NOT the T-mobile H932. This is the US998, rooted. The engineering menus are different. This LTE Band Selection DOES have reset. See it at the bottom of the screenshot?
Whereas, on the non-rooted US998, there is another LTE Selection menu which only allows you to choose one band at a time. Yes, that one can mess you up. But the menu shown in the OP of this thread shows LTE band menu with check boxes, where you can choose whatever bands (plural) you want to enable -- and has re-set.
Also, this thread shows how you can use root to populate MORE bands into that menu.
THIS is EXACTLY what everyone has been begging for -- and as soon as @vinniej or somebody else provides definite proof that LTE bands 66 and 71 are not only chosen but have reception, then there would be no reason to buy a T-mobile V30 H932. The US998 V30 has root and would have all the T-mobile bands.
Thanks for explaining it @ChazzMatt

Are you asking do I have 25 and 26 normally on AT&T? Yes, at least 25. I don't see 26. This is a pre-root screenshot from my V30, posted in another thread., from my AT&T SIM card on AT&T Prepaid.
I have not attempted what's in this thread yet, as it was just posted last night. I only have time on the weekends to actually mess with my phone.
My V30 US998 (not my daily V30+ US998) is rooted, has TWRP and Magisk. But for some reason it didn't recognize my AT&T SIM card, even though that same phone had used the exact same SIM card for WEEKS before I got my V30+. I was going to have either factory reset everything and start over or create an APN from scratch. By this time it was Super Bowl Sunday afternoon... so I put the spare phone away. Right now I'm still using unrooted V30+ as daily driver.

I wasn't suggesting anyone buy a T-Mobile V30. I read the OP and wanted to offer my insight, after having used the menus extensively. I completely understand what you said, you just repeated what I typed essentially so sorry if there was some confusion. I'm not asking for help with my phone, only trying to help you guys.
@vinniej mentioned not knowing how to restore the "default bands" that's why I mentioned the Reset button. But, Network Signal Guru is another tool as well.

I understand you were trying to help. However, your post -- unintentionally -- did cause some confusion, at least in my mind and @vinniej. I know you only meant to help, and I thank you for that. But you have not used the US998 menus extensively (have you?). There are differences in the hidden menus between those models, just as there are differences with the Verizon V30 menus.
Maybe with root, now there's less differences or no differences since we can access "all" menus now? I don't know.
Yes, with root, this "new" LTE Band Selection menu is now like the T-mobile menu discussed and shown in other threads. However, your screenshots are different, probably because you are using an app to access them?
I do not mean to denigrate your contributions in any way, but felt I had to clarify there IS a reset button on this LTE Band Selection menu and you can check off what you want and don't want.
This thread is EXACTLY what everyone has been asking for. All we have to do is confirm there's actually reception on these new bands.

Carrier Aggregation Support?

Does Moto G8 support carrier aggregation? LTE-A? Can anyone confirm or deny this? I have seen conflicting information. What LTE category does this device support? Only Cat 4?
There is only way check via modem log but Motorola doesn't provide any non-root method. If you have rooted device, you can take log with Qualcomm diag method https://cacombos.com/contribute
Thanks for the answer, unfortunately my phone is not root. For now I have no plans to change this (for warranty).
I asked because I saw conflicting information. Some reviews say that we have LTE Cat 13/5 (400Mbps / 75Mbps (Notebookcheck), others talk about cat 12 (600Mbps / 100Mbps), and on the Motorola forum I only found information about cat 4.
Tried checking with NetMonster and sometimes saw aggregations of the two bands (2600 + 800Mhz for example) but the program only showed LTE and not LTE-A. And aggregation disappeared when data was turned on (maybe it's my carrier fault?). I've never seen an LTE+ icon. I also know that this application can show nonsense.
That's why I wanted to ask, because maybe he has already checked it?
Then i don't know any other way to verify Carrier Aggregation support from your device. Not every device show 4G+/LTE+ icon - some maybe show fake icons also.
CAT13 is 2 Carrier Aggregation with 256QAM (Theory up to 400Mbps)
CAT12 is 3 Carrier Aggregation with 256QAM (Theory up to 600Mbps)
NetMonster is not reliable way - I think best way is via modem log. There is instructions https://cacombos.com/contribute but for Motorola there is no non-root method to verify.

There could have also multiple different models so please share your device model number. It's in Settings -> About so then if someone else share more details or log then it's important verify device have same model number.
Thanks for the answer. Yes, I know Netmonster can be wrong. In that case, I am waiting for the answer of someone who checked the method described by you. My model is XT2045-2.
