it's the small things that amuse me - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

I just realized there's no Bluetooth volume warning, it made my day

Now we just have to ascertain if Samsung gave up or if it has a level threshold that it won't allow over "for our own good"....
This may also be an oversight that gets patched out in an update. Bum covering for legal reasons and all...

I noticed this as well and was very happy about it.

I felt that warning was so patronizing and "americanish". In USA I expect to see a huge warning on a knife handle stating you can cut yourself badly if you are handling it.

How am I supposed to know that if they don't put it on there? Am I supposed to use common sense? Sheesh!

The volume slider turns orange over a certain level when I'm playing music on my Bluetooth speaker. Coming from HTC, that's even a little weird.

It did that before. Just when it reached the "dangerous" level, it would pop up a volume warning and the slider would turn orange. Same for the backlight slider in regards to the screen being too bright, causing burn in, battery consumption, etc.

Updated (09/05) POLLING - High Pitch Noise O2 Orbit

I have noticed that my orbit is giving off a very high pitched noise, which is almost undetectable, does everyones buzz, squeal, it is hard to explain but is an electrical noise of some sort which is only present when the screen is on?
Any suggestions, or is this a "feature"
Hi StewD,
I get a kind of ticking from my speaker and as you say maybe a 10khz sine from my screen.
I believe that this is simply an electrical effect common to all such lcds but I can only chop wood so maybe someone with a greater range of abilities can tell me I am right.
I know what you mean, I have an Archos and many other "toys" with screens, PSP, NDS, Car DVD player that have an LCD screens which are silent?
while my o2 xda is ok, a friend of mine had a similar problem (the sound would only appear when the screen is on), got it changed by o2, new one is dead silent.
Do you have any more details, that is sounding the same as mine!....Can you get him to contact me....please.
High piched noise on Orbit
If your describing a high piched sound worse when you hold the styus on nthe screen I have the same. Just got my old XDA IIi out of its dust sheet and it has the same but higher!!
That's it exactly
Is everyone affected by this "feature"
Please reply with yes or no below.
I have an Orbit, and don't have any high pitch sound.
Tried with and without stylus.....silent.
Thanks Patrick, that's great, I'm hoping your in the majority to be honest as the sound when I'm on a call is almost unbearable, what I'm hoping is that I will get a couple of dozen or so silent orbits, from other forum members which I can then go to O2 with and get it replaced....
I believe it is a characteristic of the screens. Is it possible that some peoples high frequency hearing is not quite as sensitive as that of others?

I know what you mean, but when I'm on a call it is intolerable, well almost. But like all these things unless you get 2 or 3 together at the same time and try them I'll never know?
Pity this forum doesn't require location when registering, not many people have updated their profile with where they are?.
Well that question received a lot of interest?! Is there anyone out there??
Hi StewD,
I am out here, off work while mrs. is in Austria.
Just a thought, but do you have very large pointy ears?
I usually just press the power button when I offer the phone to my ear, screen off.
LOL no standard human ears I'm afraid.
That is what I'm doing at the mo. but if there are silent orbits does that mean there is something wrong with mine??
I just thought there would have been a lot more in the way of replies to this thread...?
Thanks for your reply
I had the same "feature" in my Orbit. It was fixed by O2 Germany. So far (two days after coming back from service) my device is silent.
Cool, that's the sort of thing I wanted to hear, did they explain what was done, New screen, new firmware, or is it a new handset?
I can hear a high pitched whine from the LCD when I hold my phone to my ear, but it doesn't bother me too badly. I suspect it may be too high pitched for some people to hear (like the noise some TVs make or some dodgy fluorescent lights make).
However, thanks for the tip about hitting the 'off' button once the call is in progress!
[QUOTEHowever, thanks for the tip about hitting the 'off' button once the call is in progress!
[/QUOTE]
It took me about 18 months to figure that out!
Well...contacted O2 today, and after the usual 15 minute wait for an operator person, explained the problem and she agreed that the handset was faulty and I should send it back for replacement.
Now I'm going to be without "My Precious" for at least 3-5 working days........Arghh.. I was just getting so attached to it as well....?
I will post more news when my replacement arrives........thanks for your replies.......

Speaker making slight hissing and a click noise

Is anyone getting these slight clicking noise from the speaker whenever the phone is in use, like opening an app for example. I got my phone phone from the launch event (5th in line!! ) and i only noticed when it was really quiet in my room these noises came from the speakers.
To check, open an app and quickly put your ear to the speaker and I hear a hissing noise then a soft click. Always happens when i open an app!
I went back to Phones4U, the guy could tell it was faulty so I got it replaced..now same problem!! (not as loud as before, but still there)
Anyone having the same problem? can anyone check for me? this can't be normal!

Yeah I have that problem. It's one of those things that you don't really notice until you know it's there, then you hear it all the time
Someone on another forum posted they had the same, so it might not be an isolated problem.
Isn't that just the touch click?
Try Settings/Sound/Touch sounds.
Personally I rather like it..

No, I have that turned off.
It happens whenever the speaker is used - when the sound stops there is a quiet hiss, followed by a pop as the speaker switches off.
Try it - hold the speaker right up to your ear, and use the volume rocker to hear the beep. Afterwards there is hiss followed by a pop.
It's not noticeable enough to be an issue (for me) in normal use, but you can hear it if you're in a quiet room.

The click comes like 3 seconds after you make an input, so it doesn't sound right and it just sounds random (and annoying).
thanks tho!
Edit: Turning off Touch sounds, seems to stop it, whenever im using the phone..but yeah still happens whenever the speaker is in use but that i can live with that!

Heh, that's certainly got something to do with it
As I say it's not really an issue, and it's not unique to this phone (as you point out). Just one of those annoying niggles - it depends on how sensitive you are to these things
Yes - I have the same problem with my new Galaxy Nexus. In fact, even if it's not a problem for most people, I'd say it is a problem for Samsung because I returned my phone yesterday and got it swapped out. The new one has the same problem, so I assume it's an Android software problem rather than a hardware glitch.
So that's at least two returns caused by this problem. Hope we get a fix at some point!
p.s. Phone is great by the way, even with the annoying click.
Guys
This is hardware problem. And it happens on most of the speakers however its more or less noticeable on some devices.
I have quite good quality monitors (studio speakers) and i can hear something hissing in the back.
Let me put it that way.
Every speaker needs electricity to work. The noise you are hearing is the actual electric current coming through the speakers. The sudden pop and lack of the hiss means that speaker has been turned off. For obvious reasons there is no point for the speaker to work constantly....
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I can't hear any click when I plug headphones in, so maybe you're right - the click could be when the amplifier that powers the internal speaker turns off...
However, for some reason I still get a click if the phone is in silent mode. I guess putting it in silent mode doesn't guarantee it keeps the amplifier turned off.
I hope it's just the speakers; the DAC in my HD2 hissed for a few seconds after any sounds even through my headphones. The hissing was always there when there was sound. It was quite depressing. I'm hoping for a good DAC in the Galaxy nexus.
I've got a click (sounds just like a quite speaker pop) from the back cover.
Turn your GN over and push the back cover, on the "Google" logo (below the camera flash). Then quickly release your finger.
Sometime it can happen with only the lightest of touches. If i put my phone down on my chest, the pick it up.
If you look really closely you can see the cover moving just below the camera surround.
Issue has been reported to google.

I have this issue on my gnex. Its def a sw problem. I took the back cover off and still have the issue.
slightly different, but also hiss related...
my rezound does the same thing when headphones(or aux to car) are plugged in and nothing is playing. once you start to play something you don't notice it. and its a confirmed issue.
It's a hardware issue guys, depends on the audio chip I believe. Impedance-related.
Here is the other thread with this annoying sound

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It isn't just on the speaker either. Atleast on my Galaxy Nexus, I can hear it when listening on high end professional in-ear headphones. I can verify that it is almost certainly a signal isolation problem. The activity causes the DAC (the thing that makes a digital signal into an analog signal that speakers and headphones need) to kick on for a few seconds and until it shuts off you can hear the noise coming out of the DAC. It's pretty substantial on mine though, so I'm wondering if I got a bad unit. I'll have to stop by a Verizon Wireless store and plug in to the display unit to see if it is any better. I never noticed this on my Galaxy S (Fascinate).
My unit is also affected, it was made in Vietnam. I checked the Google Code issue tracker link (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22307) and I can see many people confirming this also. This is definitely not how the speaker should work - I checked another Samsung phone (SGS II) and there's no such "clicks". There's some silent noise but not the click.
I can hear it from the speaker only, not through the headphones.
I think many users are unaware of the issue because it is often only noticeable in a silent environment.
Yes getting same issue. Have tried different ROMS to no avail

What annoys you the most about this phone.

For me it's the floating call timer when using different app during a call
The fact that it apparently doesn't trickle charge via wireless charging. Oh, and it's pickiness about placement. Holy crap, is that annoying.
My biggest frustration is turning on the screen. Sometimes it turns on a second or two later, and by then, you've already tapped again on it - and this time, those taps turn it back off! Ugh!
As for the floating call timer, if you root it and have the G3 Tweaks Box, there is an option to remove that box and put it back in the notification drawer.
- It gets way too hot by the buttons.
- Having no capacitive buttons and being forced to use on screen buttons.
- Battery life is 'meh' using stock firmware.

Who said we don't like it? I love this phone, but it has some annoying "features" to it. Don't like it? Don't read this thread.
The fact that it's on T-Mobile is what pisses me off. Where's my update?!
The wonky audio port/connection. When using the phone with regular headphones (no remote) bumping the jack will result in the phone registering random commands and dropping audio.

If I had to find a single thing, I guess it would be the screen's contrast at higher brightness levels. Normally it's not a big peeve, but this particular screen displays black with reckless inaccuracy.
Not crazy about the buttons on the back. Sometimes when I'm squatting down to tie my shoes or something I hear the volume going up. Other than that the phone is great. I just wish it had ways of changing colors in the dialer or some UI without rooting.
Oh and the fact that Lollipop is coming soon and the upgrades doesn't even look like anything has changed. Oh well.

Whining noise from speaker when low brightness

I noticed this last night when I had brightness set to minimum.
My bottom speaker is emitting an awful, high pitched noise. Sounds exactly like a dog whistle if I put it up to my ear. It happens when the screen is on, goes away immediately when the screen is off. It's mostly the bottom speaker, but I can hear it a bit off the earpiece too.
Someone else please test this, set your brightness to minimum, hold the bottom speaker up to your ear. Then set max brightness and see if it goes away.
Reboot did not fix it. May try a factory reset today.

I can replicate this on my Verizon HTC 10. The high pitched noise isn't loud or anything, but if I'm listening for it I can hear it if I put my ear to it (both bottom and top speakers.) The noise seems to go away when I make a phone call. I really don't consider this to be an issue... it's not noticeable unless I'm specifically trying to listen for it and put my ear up to the speaker, and only when it's at low brightness. /shrug

Yeah I'm torn on whether or not it's a problem for me. Right now it's driving me literally crazy lol. Whenever I'm in a quiet room, and brightness is below 30%, I hear it faintly, then I hold it up to my ear and it's a high pitched dog whistle making my brain bleed. It's making my ears ring even when not on my phone. I currently obsessing over it lol.
I'd like figure out whether or not this is present on all devices though.

Understandable. You can count me in the "Yes" column. I believe this has something to do with the LCD though, possibly with the refresh rate or something? Not 100% sure, but if you google search "high pitched noise from speaker when at low brightness" there are quite a few posts about people having this issue with LCD's in particular, even some older Nexus devices. I'm also interested to see if others have this issue, but my guess is all HTC 10's will do this...

Sent from my HTC6545LVW using XDA-Developers mobile app
I can't reproduce this on my unlocked US model either or at least I can't hear it. How high pitched are we talking? I can usually easily hear tones up to around 19 kHz.
Edit: So mine does make a quiet tone with the brightness between about 5-10%. I can't hear it unless I hold the bottom speaker right up to my ear so this is a non-issue for me.
It's probably the pwm for the backlight that causes this.
Just to clarify, to me this sound is difficult to hear, not loud at all and it's not a consistent noise when the brightness is low. Make sure the phone is on about 5-15% brightness and hold your ear to the bottom speaker. It's a very high pitched sound. I believe the sound is coming from the LCD, I doubt our units are defective, but it's possible I guess...

Looks like there was an issue with it on the 2015 Pixel too.
Google's Response:
"After having one of our techs look into this, we found that this is the normal operating sound for the screen at that brightness because of the high density of pixels in the screen. However, it is such a high-pitched sound most people can't hear it which is probably why other owners say that theirs don't make that sound either."

Seems it's such a high frequency that not everyone can hear it... I'll bet it's the exact same situation here.
Well I just summoned another HTC 10. I had ordered two and cancelled one but they shipped it anyway so I refused delivery. Just went to my local FedEx facility and picked it up.

Agree completely... I was always one of those who could hear that frequency on those old CRTs too I'll just live with it, it's not a big inconvenience to me. The only time I'll have my face close enough to hear it will be when making calls, and it doesn't make that sound when calling

Well I'm starting to believe your right, it's on all devices.
The new one that I just opened has the same thing.
I'm not sure how people aren't hearing it. All it takes is a quiet room and it's such a piercing ring. I can literally hold it 12 inches from my face, and move it from side to side and hear the sound moving with the phone.
I've noticed a few things that cause it:
- the brightness is below 30%. 30-40 it's unnoticeable but still there if you hold the screen up to your ear. Above 50 it's gone.
- the background of the screen affects the pitch. The darker the background the louder and higher the pitch is.
I can live with it through the day. When I use my phone before going to bed, or just waking up I usually use my phone at 0% brightness. It's extremely noticeable even a good distance from my face at that point.
I hear it as well... HTC 10 gold, sim free - Spain

Question Screen flicker issue

Anyone run into this yet. https://www.androidpolice.com/google-pixel-6-and-6-pro-screen-flicker/
"Some Redditors speculate that the flickering might be related to static discharge that's released when hitting the button."
Yeah, nothing like the rocket scientists at Reddit to come up with sound answers
Static electricity would destroy the display.
FET's are very sensitive to over voltage on their gates.
Maybe what they were trying to say was unintentional temporary surge on the gates of the matrix TFT's.
If that's the cause long as that surge doesn't exceed the max specs for the FET's in the matrix it's not damaging. If it does, outlook not so good.
If it's not happening during normal operation once on, it's probably a harmless quirk.
Who knows maybe intentional to give it some character I sort of think it looks cool... but Google isn't cool so yeah, it's a fk up.
I have it on my P6P. Turn phone completely off, quickly tap power button and it'll flicker. I'm guessing it's trying to power up but since you only quickly pressed the button, not full power is given.
I'm not worried about it.
I've seen no noticeable flicker at all. Perhaps I just lucked out on this phone?
By design there is an inbuilt delay so you have to press and hold the power button, this helps prevents accidental power ups and also allows time for the user to press other combination of buttons (i.e. to get the bootloader screen), so on a quick press things are still happening behind the scenes like a pre-flight check, and the screen electronics are probably immediately powered up as part of this pre-flight check.
When the button is released without reaching the timeout period to trigger a full power on, the phone just goes back to being off again, now you have a falling voltage which doesn't always drop immediately due to stored charges in capacitors, and that can cause odd glitches sometimes as components see lower voltages than they are designed to work with. With sensitive chips (like flash memory) there will be brownout detection, so they immediately stop cleanly when they see a low voltage, and before that voltage has dropped so low it starts causing oddities or malfunctions. The glitching might also just be the effect of other devices stopping and magnetic fields collapsing causing some spurious data to get to the screen before the screen itself has powered off.
It certainly isn't a fault or anything to worry about, just a quirk of the design.
is it really an issue? Or just phone geeks looking for something to complain about? What effect does it actually have on the usage of the phone?

Without knowing what's happening it's impossible to say it's harmless.
See my previous post.
At this price point I would send it back... or not and risk eating the repair latter. It could be mobo hardware related.
Google addressed this today saying to basically power your phone like you normally would, without pressing the power button in quick succession without powering the phone up, and that a fix will be out in the December patch/update.
It's not a hardware issue.
