Android Auto Update - What do you think? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

The day after I received my new Note 10 - I plugged my Note 10 Plus into my Kenword (head unit in my car) and before I could do anything with Android Auto, I got a message saying "Update" -
So a new Android Auto update installed and therre are many improvements I have found - I wondered what anyone else who uses Android Auto in the car stereo unit thought about it?
ONe of the biggest things I like is that I don't have to launch android auto and then choose IHeartRadio everytime I turn on the car like I used to. Now, Android Auto and IHeart Radio starts by default as soon as I plug in my phone and start driving. I think it is automatically launching the last program I used which makes it easier when you get in your car and plug in.
The UI has improved a lot too - offering a much improved layout - easier to access the different programs, easier to use.
The only disappointment is I still don't get Wireless connection to Android Auto like it works on Google Pixel devices. (I thought Android Auto was supposed to be wireless for all devices that are on android 9 and later, but I guess that hasn't happened yet. Hopefully that will change soemtime soon.
In any event, I use Android Auto whenever I am in my car. I love the iHeart Radio Ap and the tight integration with my phone, google maps and more and I really like the new update they launched.
What do you think of the new version of Android Auto ?

i like the old android auto better, it much easier to switch google map and waze.
on this new android auto, i have to keep scrolling until waze or google map, my car doesnt have touch screen.
i wish we can rearrange the icons.

The new update is WAY better in my opinion. Looks better and is more user friendly.

I agree. before the update it took multiple steps for me to start listening to my Favorite stations thru I Heart Radio - after the update, the last station I listened to starts playing almost immediately after starting the car and plugging in my phone. Much Better for me....and personally, I really like the new UI

I just wish i could get a full screen map with out all the extra junk

Android 5.0 and Moto 360

Thought it would be worthwhile to share my initial impressions of Android 5.0 with the Moto 360. I am running it on a Nexus 5. First, 5.0 rox!!!
Nicest feature thus far is Smart Lock, which auto unlocks the phone while connected to the Moto 360. I was doing this previously through Tasker, but it's nice to remove a step. The new Messenger App also works quite well. It has a very well done full screen view of the full message and quick access to voice reply. I am still using Wear Messenger for canned responses, but I've formally turned off the notification part of that app.
I'm using Google Inbox so no impression of the new Gmail 5.0 app. The new Calendar, which is beautiful, doesn't appear to add any better functionality either. More to come here. I feel like Google Now has improved, but that is very anecdotal.
Notifications are vastly improved in Lollipop but I'm expecting the Wear uptick to come through Android Wear 2.0. Hopefully more to come as that happens.
So, in short, Messenger App and Smart lock are most obvious improvements before 2.0 drops.
Anyone else finding goodies???
I like the new update. Like others here I needed to restart the watch to get the new faces to show up. The new features are welcomed. I like the ability to add the date to any watchface now.
I imagine someone will start a thread to post new backgrounds that can be used in the "my design" watchface.
Music Controls Missing from Moto 360 After Lollipop 5.0 Update
I noticed that music controls are missing from my Moto 360 after updating to 5.0 Lollipop. The music card only pops-up on the Moto 360 when you pause a song from the phone, and from there (& only then) can you skip to the next track from the watch.

Hrmm, I noticed that it was missing too.

Missing watch faces
I installed upgraded my Nexus 5 last night to the latest build, reset my device (moto 360), downloaded the latest moto Connect and Android Wear apps, paired and now I am missing all the new watch faces; they show up in Android Wear and I can customize them there but they are not showing up on my watch for selection.
I have reset the moto 360 twice now and still no-go. Worst thing is that I'm missing the Pascual face which is, by far, my favorite.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
Much appreciated!

I had the same problem, even after I paired Moto360 to my phone and then clear data for the Connect app.
So what I did
Uninstall Connect app
After I paired up with my watch, I reinstall Connect app and login, and then at Android Wear app, I press "resync apps" and all the watch faces show up again on the watch
Hope this helps

Thank you, that worked like a charm!
Interesting, Motorola already had smartlock in their phones even with 4.4. It is a great feature I am sure many people will use.
I do really like the smartlock on 5.0 with my N5, whoever i tried and hoped that smartlock would work flawlessly while attached to both my N5 and N7 (12), but no such luck, worked on phone fine, and does pair with my N7, but seemed to only want to work with one at a time with smartlock, sorta lame, and hope that is resolved. However i don't like having Google Fit and Motorola both running health apps at the same time, i noticed today by battery ran done on the Moto360 quicker, and i know it's due to the Google Fit app, so most likely will have to disable that, would be nice if i could just turn it off instead like one can with their step cards.
After I update to android 5.0, I the answer function on the watch just shows the reject and reject then send a pre-made message.

Me too, I don't know if this is normal.
Update: I think it has something to do with the Google Play Services Update.

See, here is my deal... I only noticed the "Connected, running sync loop" AFTER i paired a bluetooth headset to test the music playback from the watch.... i saw that and got worries...
a fellow android nerd told me that he saw it after updating google play services to 6.5..... interesting... because i DID update to GPS 6.5 yesterday morning, but only noticed the mesasge after i was playing with the headset... so i really dont know if it was there before the headset pairing or not
yes this is most certainly a 6.5 thing. i upgraded to 6.5 and had the problem...downgraded and it went away. this is on my z3 compact stock running 4.4.4...seems like google updated something in play services before android wear was updated to take it.

i had mentioned it in the play services thread .. appears as soon as it is connected to the phone after updating to 6.5..need to wait for 1.0.5 ..although except for the annoying running sync i see no extra battery drain than before
Sorry to be slightly off topic, but I noticed some of you running this watch with the nexus 5. How are you finding the n5 battery life while having the moto 360 connected all day? Im currently looking at going with this combo over the next few weeks but I hear things about the n5 battery life.. Glad to hear the 5.0 brings some nice functionality though

[Q] Android Auto (Sonata) Slow and Sluggish.

Anybody have a fix for ZenFone 2 (ZE551ML) being so sluggish with Android Auto (at least in the Sonata)?
I was thinking maybe a power managment thing that slows down CPU while charging or when USB cable is attached. Dunno.
But it's not just me as I just read this review that confirmed what I am experiencing. I still have 15 days to return my phone but love it other than the Android Auto performance.
I know the Android Auto app itself could be geared toward Arm and an update could fix everything but hoping that happens and losing the opportunity to RMA it might not be wise on my part if it never gets fixed.
Any ideas? And this is the article that mentions the trouble with the Zenfone 2 and Android Auto in the Sonata...
Ok can't post link but it is on androidpolice website called "Android Auto: A Second Take On Google's In-Car Efforts".

Zenfone2 is dog slow with Android Auto. Why?
What do you mean dog slow? When I tried it last month it ran fine. Google maps and music worked without issues. The only minor thing is you had to scroll the screen to hit accept when the Android Auto disclaimer popped up - not sure if that was fixed or not but let me check with Hyundai.

Maps and Music work. But when in iHeart Radio for example clicking top left on the screen to choose a station is 10 times slower than my Nexus 5 or OnePlus. This results in choosing the wrong station as the list hasn't completed scrolling up when I choose a station listed.
The best way I can describe it is with other phones it displays at 25-30 frames a second but with the Zenfone2 it may not even be 5 frames a second. This is obviously not noticeable once the screen is drawn and no changes are needed.
Also performance switching songs via voice commands within Google Music is very responsive. It is just the screen draws that are unacceptably slow.
Like I said the review on androidpolice echos my frustration with the Zenfone2 and Android Auto in my Sonata.
Noted. I'll discuss with Hyundai.

So, no iPhone support??

I know it was rumor and hear/say, but I was wondering if hope was still alive.
There is with third party apps
Tried the main one, Aerlink. It's a good attempt, I can't really critique as I have zero programming skills. I know the Pebble watch has good support, as do the many fitness trackers that seem to pop up every day.
I understand Apple doesn't want direct competition for their Watch, but still...
right now, google confirms iphone support, but only for the LG Watch Urbane, maybe later we'll get support too. "There is a slight catch though. Android Wear for iOS currently works with the LG Watch Urbane, while future Android Wear watches (including ones from Huawei, Asus and Motorola) will come with built-in support for iOS. "
That sounds like a 2 part update. A software update for the watch, and an actual app for iOS. I say that because if it's just an iOS app, why make the app recognize only one type of Wear hardware and exclude other types of Wear hardware? I suppose marketing comes into play, wanting users to constantly upgrade their hardware.
Seems to be working if your 360 is running the latest update Android Wear 1.3, mine is still running the last update so can't confirm. I can confirm mine will not pair with the current version I am on Android Wear 1.1.1.2006643.

I have had mine and my brothers connected with this version. You don't get watch faces but it does work. We have since updated to the 1.3 and now can use watch faces. the phone are a iphone 5 and a iphone 6 plus(mine)
Mine connected with 1.1.1.2006643, but it is draining the battery like no other. Now, I'm updating it to latest version with another phone, so I'll provide an update on how it works.
I had to remove it set it back up with my m8 to update it. With the watch connected to the iphone it would not update and the battery died very quickly.
after i updated it and resynced back to my iphone it seems fine. i'll give it a couple of days.
I've been running my 360 with my iPhone 6 Plus for 24 hours now and so far the battery drain is marginal.
That is also probably due to me digging into the features and using the watch a lot more than normal.
Big note though, WiFi sync is not available on iOS.
The toggle is not visible on the watch either.
Just got this up and running, not bad really. Mine seems to disconnect and attempt to reconnect a lot, usually giving me some kind of notification on the watch, but when it is connected it works as expected.
Has anyone tried to pair the watch to both an android and an iPhone at the same time?? I bought a few watch faces while attached to a Nexus tablet, but then did a factory reset to get my watch to pair with the iPhone, effectively removing all of my watch add-ons. I'd like to get some back....
Tried to pair with both iPhone and Android and that's a no go.
Also tried to Factory Reset, install on Android with apps and watchfaces and unpair on Android before trying to pair with iPhone.
That was a no go as well.
Probably a way to pair with both possible but no solution yet it seems.

Did it work?
How exactly did you update it to 1.3 with another phone? I've paired my moto360 with and Android phone and updated it but it won`t show on Android Wear iOS to pair...
It seems like Android Wear iOS installs the 1.1 whenever I pair it with moto360. 1.1 is draining my battery so fast it becomes a useless watch. It actually drains faster than the charger can charge.

Mine was draining battery like crazy. Updated my 360 and 2 resets later all seems like back to Normal with the battery.

Android Wear for iOS does not modify the OS on your watch.
If your watch is on 1.3, it will not change.
You have to do a factory reset in order to pair it with iOS.

First I found one to try LCARS Android Wear Watch Face LCARS Android Wear Watch Face
Then I used the Evozi APK downloader http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ to get the phone APK
Extracted the APK (like a zip file)
Found the APK meant for the watch (android_wear_micro_apk.apk) in the extractedapk > res > raw folder
Enabled ADB on the watch (Settings > About > tap Build Number I think 7 times which enabled Developer Options)
Swipe back to previous page, Open Developer Options
Tap ADB debugging to enable
Tap Check icon to enable it
You can now type adb shell on your computer which will give you a card on your watch to allow it
Once you have a prompt you can type exit and hit enter to get back to your computers prompt
From there you just type:
adb install /location/of/android_wear_micro_apk.apk
Once it is installed it will say so on the watch and will be available in the watch face selection carousel

This works for a USB cabled watch, Moto 360 won't work.
Works on iPhone 4s also. Or at least it is for me.
Here's my experience. With 1.1 watch os, won't work. Upgraded to 1.3. Can connect with iPhone 5s now. However, only google cards work, not other notifications from other apps. Reset it and went back with aerlink.

Few questions about my avin avant 2

I've got a new avin avant 2 system build in my car. I tried contacting the developer of the system for a few questions, but he won't reply.
But i see that it is a mtcb device so i thought I ask it here.
1: When turning off my car while playing spotify it would keep playing until the device turns itself completely off after 30 seconds. now I see that you can pause it by using tasker of some sort. But when I turn my car back on (cold boot) it starts spotify again but not play the last song it was when turning it off. I have to search the song again and then play it again from the beginning. Is there something to do about this or is it a spotify limitation.
It would be awesome if it shows the last song and I only have to press play instead of searching it again. Or better it would start itself. A friend of mine told me he has an android head unit himself and it would play spotify where it left off. Don't know if that's a lie though
2: Is there any profit when installing an custom firmware? Let's say the one from Malaysk? Would it be faster or something? I'm not really a root guy so xposed is something I'm not interrested in (for now).
What would be the benefits?
3: maybe this is a stupid question so my apologies beforehand: I want to replace the radio software with a different one because when a radio station name is to long it would take up 2 rows and the 6 quick station buttons are placed a row below, behind the search buttons. So choosing a station is a difficult task if a radio station name is too long. I saw a different radio software where the search buttons are not present on the lower row but more at the top. that would be ideal. But I downloaded a new apk from xda. placed it on a sd card. tried installing the apk. But it says this app cannot be installed. Am I doing something wrong? (probably yes ).
4: I have a universal avant 2 (6'95") Which does not have a reset button (at least at the front) It has touch buttons (Eject dvd, power, home, volume + and volume -) Is there a way to go into recovery without a reset button? and what if the radio hangs?
I think this is it for now.
My unit is a Joying Jeep specific model (MTCD and Android 5.1) with the Malaysk V4 ROM, so some of this might not apply to your Avant
1 - i think this has to do with Internet access. Specifically when you turn on your vehicle and the head unit either returns from sleep or boots. In my month or so of use, I have found that I have seen all scenarios. Sometimes it boots to the last song and I can play from where it left off, sometimes it just starts the song over again, sometimes I start from scratch. I think that if you have an internet source when the radio boos or wakes up, then it will find the last song. If you do not have internet access, then it is a crapshoot. I try to turn on my hotspot when I hit my remote start, and I have had much more success playing the current/last song. However I do Pause Spotify right before I shut off my vehicle.
2 - you have to read a ton to figure out all the benefits. For most I would assume the expanded storage. On my Joying initially only 2 gigs were available for apps, but with Malaysk you get the full 12 or 13 or whatever. And the DPI is adjusted. On the stock Joying ROM everything was a little too big, but with Malaysk, things fit the screen better
3 - I dont use the actual Radio at all, I even disabled the app. So I dont know, but i think Malaysk fixes this
4 - no idea

Thank you for your reply,
My biggest question is: Do you experience a speed difference between stock and Malaysk rom? or is it about the same? I experience a fast downgrade of speed while using the radio. I wish it was possible to auto clean processes every couple of minutes or so. But maybe the Custom Firmware handles the speed better?

you could probably set that up with some app. Malaysk has the "speed" option, rocket icon, that cleans something. ES Task Manager has a way to kill stuff, and you can add apps to the ignore file. I had mine set to ignore Spotify and Google Maps and I would kill stuff like that.
I only had stock for about a week, so I can't really say if there is a speed difference. It is all a matter of setting expectations I think. Nothing is lighting fast, it is not a Samsung S7 Edge in the dash. I also went through and disabled as much stuff as possible.
For the most part, I just use my Joying for 3 things:
Music - Spotify
GPS - Google Maps, sometimes Waze, sometimes iGO
Bluetooth - phone calls or audio from my phone
So I have disabled a ton of stuff. There is still some lag, especially with Google Maps. It is worth noting I also had lag using Google Play Music and Google Calendar. I bailed on Google Music for Spotify. However i just like Google Maps better than any other Nav, so I have learned to deal with it. I also have a calendar app, but i dont use that every day. For the record it is aCalendar

What do you mean by disabeling alot of stuff? WHat kind of stuff and how do you disable it? maybe i can clear some memory too in that way. sorry if I ask stupid questions .
Well I just go through Settings > Apps and then go through and disable stuff i do not need.
One example is the Radio, i never use it, so I clear cache, clear memory, then disable. I will have to a take a look to see what all I disabled. I know the Malaysk ROM will add a bunch of stuff that some people like, but I have no need for, such as Titanium Backup, so I got rid of it. Joying adds Torque and some Live Wallpapers, so say you dont use those ever, just go into the App settings and disable it

Re-purposing an N7 as a "smart display"

With the announcement of google assistant "smart displays" at CES I thought well I have my N7 that I find myself using less and less (reading ebooks, some content consumption and some social media) maybe I can use the nexus as a smart display?
Short of flashing a Android Things OS (which as far as I know isn't an option) how can I set it up to best suit my needs?
So wiped and flashed stock 6.0.1 haven't rooted shouldn't need to and going to try and install as little as possible as it's showing it's age perfwise.
I've enabled Google Assistant and granted it isn't using far field microphones it'll be next to my bed so I can't see it being a huge issue.
One of the annoyances is that assistant defaults to a portrait mode while I'd like it to remain in landscape any ideas?
I'll have it plugged to power in with either a lockscreen showing just the bare necessities or dimming the display to as low as possible. May want to keep it as an always on display what's the burn in situation on the screen?
Audio will either be a 3.5mm to an old speaker or default audio out to a chromecast audio.
Also looking for any nice widgets that could be useful for a smart display?
Or any other ideas or thoughts?
thx
Maybe instead of having it plugged in all the time, just use wireless charging. Yes, it is slower, but it would make it easy to grab from a night stand. I have thought the same thing as you when I heard about the "smart displays". I'm on Lineage OS 14 with Nova Launcher. It runs really well for being 5 years old.
I bought the official dock from Asus in Amazon (Warehouse return). I use Daydream as a screensaver. Only negative so far is that it responds in portrait mode when giving it voice commands. It picks up my voice better than I thought it would. I wish there was a way to have the assistant screen up all the time with a screensaver when idle. Maybe there is and I just don't know about it.
I'm setting-up HADashboard (a Dashboard interface for Home-Assisant) on a couple of Nexus 7 2013's through the house, with the wireless charging in the wall and a removable printed wall mount. I'm currently searching for the right apps / rom. I'm currently running stock with WallPanel running.

HADashboard seems interesting. Can you expand on your WallPanel solution ? Perhaps a screenshot ?
I've been trying a few things to use as an always on home screen. I settled on using Android Auto as a nice clean interface. The issue I have is that the tablet is either rebooting after a short while or the app is crashing and is leaving the tablet on the home screen. I'm still using the latest stock image build from Google. It seems to be doing the same thing with most apps that I've used as either a Daydream screensaver or an always on app. Not sure if this is because of marshmallow or just that the tablet can't handle keeping an app running all day.
Now that there are real devices available, has anyone looked if it is possible to port or or use old tablet as smart display device like Jbl Link View etc?
Interested in this. Is there a way to convert a Nexus 7 (2013) to a Google Home View?
Ditto to finding this. Has anyone been able to perform a system dump?
