unlock s10 + get new software update here in US - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Just received this OTA on my unlocked s10 plus in US

Do you notice any changes?
Sent from my SM-G975U using XDA Labs

I have an unlocked S10+ purchased in the US. I'm currently traveling in Australia and using their Optus network. Got a notification to install this update. Figured since it was security related, it wouldn't matter. Boy was I wrong. My phone is borderline unusable now unless I pull the SIM out. Trying to find a place to download a previous version of firmware to swap out.

My phone is working flawlessly.
I haven't experienced any issues at all.

Update fixed my camera, slightly more stable WiFi and cellular, battery tho, seems a bit worse. Usually get 2 days at 9-10 sot. Barely hitting 7

Lollipop Update

Okay this is kind of weird because I know T-Mobile has not rolled out the update. In fact I believe they are completely refusing to do it to force people to resort to upgrading phones. But I got this system update on my phone this morning and I am wondering if anybody has gotten it as well or has any explanation. I haven't downloaded it yet.
T-Mobile SGH-M919. Weird because it says the GPE
it has been said before if you would have searched, but it is a patch for the stagefright vulnerability and that is about it.

GPe? That's odd, unless you're running a custom ROM

Which rom where you using when you get this message?
GPE has already been updated to 5.1, so even if that is LP it's still older than current.
I have been calling TMOBILE (US) every week since May to find out where the LOLLIPOP UPGRADE is for my SGH-M919 ((Galaxy S4) and finally about 3 weeks ago I got them to confess that SAMSUNG HAD GIVEN THEM TO UPDATE FOR THIS PHONE - BUT, THEY WERE NOT GOING TO RELEASE IT.
When I asked why, I was given the B***S*** answer that there were known bugs and all other providers had problems with it - I said they were corrected in the 5.01, and 5.1 versions - he then basically (without saying it) stated they want people to buy newer devices.
I told him I OWN MY DEVICE, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, and I WILL ROOT IT AND PUT A CUSTOM ROM ON IT.
I was told, you will void your warranty.....I rolled with laughter and said...it is over 2 years old - THERE IS NO F***ING WARRANTY anymore...and I hung up.

Yet another great example of why I jumped ship for Cricket. Tmo does all this uncarrier crap because they say they care about the consumer, but when it's all on the table they're just like Verizon or Sprint or AT&T. If you're on older hardware, then they don't care about you. You're a number that they added years ago, and all that matters are the numbers they'll add today and tomorrow.
I'm still rockin' my S4 after all this time. When I'm ready to upgrade, I'll be buying my phone unlocked and ready to go with Cricket. Now that the new Nexus devices are on their way, I'm just going to save up and splurge on the Nexus 6P and not have to worry about bull**** carriers screwing me on updates and security fixes.
I buy T-Mo phones because they traditionally have unlocked bootloaders, so I can flash whatever ROM I like. ATT, and I believe Cricket, tends to use phones where the bootloader is locked down tightly. I like the open Nexus platform and am also considering one in the future...

Connectivity Status on 1.53?

Hi all,
I have a VZW 10 running 1.19. I'm interested in knowing if the connectivity issues, specifically Wi-Fi, have been fixed. The patch notes for 1.53 do address it, but has it been fixed.
I know there are workarounds, but this is a $550 phone. Wi-Fi should work out of the box.
Thanks for your help.

1.53 is for general US unlocked and not VZW. 1.53 needs non VZW firmware to work properly.
1.19 is a very old build (US launched with 1.21) so I'd expect a VZW update sometime in the next 30 days.

I'm on 1.19 as well shipped from Verizon. no update was available to 1.21 for me. I'm currently using viper now with 1.19 still, hoping to see something pop up on here :fingers-crossed:
I seem to have wifi issues using standard wifi, but if I use the wifi-5G connection It works flawless

Correct, 1.21 is ONLY for general unlocked versions and not VZW. You won't see a 1.21.617.* or 1.53.617.* update as those are not for your device. In fact you shouldn't use any *.617.* build as the 617 indicates it's not for your carrier but general unlocked.
You must use a VZW build because of firmware and custom VZW settings. Your only choice right now is to wait for VZW to push their build update.

My wifi was fine on 1.21, then was horrible with the 1.53 update. It's mostly alright now with a couple tweaks.

Interesting. How will future firmware updates work? Will we receive the same but with .605 at the end?

The build identifiers work like this = 1.53.617.5 <--- current gen unlocked build.
1.53 = primary build ID
.617. = is the carrier specific ID
5 = minor build revision ID
You're partly right. A VZW build would look like (taken from an M9 build) 3.37.605.7 where .605. is the VZW carrier ID. More than likely when they release the update it'll be higher than 1.53.*.*
If you're stock recovery and system then you'll get an OTA notification from VZW whenever their updates are available. There may be an RUU available once the updates are pushed and settled.
The OTA will have a new radio, firmware and system updates for your carrier. You must use matching firmware/system build in order to get the best performance. The firmware is the hardware layer while the system is the software/OS layer.
You should not use new system with old firmware or new firmware with old system files.
Great. Thank you. That helps. I will wait patiently for HTC and Verizon to fix this issue.

I know it's a tough spot and being patient can be hard.
I really don't think it'll be long before we see an update for you. The UK and US updates were about 3 weeks apart and we just got our US 1.53.* update a week or so ago. Give it a couple more weeks to pass the carrier approval stage and it'll get pushed out.
For sure, there will be an update. Try to be patient

I haven't experienced this exact issue but what I have experienced as a general drop in signal strength on the 10. I have a side-by-side comparison of signal with my m9 versus the 10 and there's a big difference. I'm on prepaid service so I'm planning on switching to AT&T next month just to see if their service is any better. So far no one from T-Mobile has been able to tell me why my service is so bad considering I have two towers less than 1 mile away from where I live, and when I first started service with T-Mobile about five years ago it was fantastic but I would say in the last six months to a year it has started to go downhill

Verizon firmware but bought from Google

So I got my phone yesterday and it did some updating while I was setting it up and noticed that the latest firmware it installed was NDE63X not V. I bought this from Google not Verizon paid all the money up front so it is fully mine. I have Verizon service, did they just hijack my phone? I have Googled a bit on it and can't find an answer. This worries me since I avoided buying from Verizon so they had no say on updates. I have not gotten any of the Verizon apps automatically added toy phone yet. Thanks for any answer.

If you have a Verizon SIM in the phone, it will get Verizon firmware images regardless of where you bought the phone.
I would recommend flashing the Google OTA's yourself when they release.
Don't worry. You got the verizon firmware because you have a verizon sim. The reverse is true for people who bought their phones from verizon and went to another carrier. Their phones updated to the US firmware automatically.
Verizon bootloaders cannot be unlocked. That is the only difference. Firmware versions are completely independent of this fact.

No. The software sees that you are using a Verizon sim and downloads the version that is optimized for Verizon networks.
Makes the radio work more efficiently with the bands Verizon uses and such things like that. Maybe downloads a set of unique Verizon apps you may want to use for your convenience. You can dismiss these apps or run some other firmware if you wish. It is not hijacking your phone and turning it into an evil, screwed up monster with a locked bootloader or rendering it unrootable.

Thanks, just the info I needed. If I switched carriers or traveled internationally and switched sim cards would this cause the phone issues?

You may get slightly better performance overseas or on another carrier with different firmware due to the slight differences in the radio, but it will function the same otherwise.

If I have a Verizon version unlocked and take the Verizon firmware update is it possible for them to relock the bootloader? UPDATE - I looked on the forum and it seems like every agrees that it isn't possible for VZ to relock bootloader with firmware updates. Just want to confirm this is correct.

Will it be safe to buy the Verizon variant over the google store?

I haven't completely thought this through, so I'm not sure if this will make sense or not, so bear with me.
I've been looking around the internet and getting mixed responses about the verizon variant of the pixel. I want to be able to have an unlocked BL (which I'm pretty sure is possible with depixel8) and root. I normally would be all for the Google model, but they're out of stock and I could get the verizon model within a few hours rather than waiting for a restock. My main concern is if the verizon model will cause some annoyances in the future, because Verizon might pull something out of nowhere that would make having the verizon model dreadful. Basically, does anyone think that there will be any issues (especially in the future) if I just got the verizon model and unlocked the bootloader and just flashed the stock software, sort of de-verizoning it, or would I honestly just be better off waiting for Google to get more stock

If you do get it from Verizon, unlock the bootloader immediately, and NEVER re-lock it. You can't really "de-verizon" it. Once you boot with a Verizon sim, the next update will push you to the Verizon version of the firmware, which is not a big deal, just different radios optimized to Verizons network. Any Verizon apps can be uninstalled.

I was in the same boat as you. I went with the verizon version. Unlocked the bootloader, and popped my sim in. It downloaded the latest non verizion ota. I say go for it.
Project Fi had all variants in stock as of a few days ago. My XL is due next week from them. I'm already a Fi customer and expect to be for the foreseeable future, so their finance option at zero interest was an easy sell. You could probably start service and cancel it after you receive your phone if you have another carrier.
Dude, I bought mine from Google store and vzw still pushed 63X on mine :crying:
Good thing I unlocked it before taking in the update.

Got an update this morning too - On Sprint, but I think it had to do with T-mobile enabling 5G for Sprint users
Merger for T-MO and Spring. And it promptly dropped a call in an otherwise excellent service route to work this morning.
Relatedly, there is no 5G in Little Rock, AR. With or without the update. LOL, joke's on me.
