Root - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello XDA,i tried to root my galaxy S9(Exynos) and i think i f***ed up.

managed to make root work but a problem appeared:unable to use samsung account, unable to use any other type of lock screen type except swipe, andafter i instaled youtube vanced using magisk repozitory the phone entered again in the lock screen loop.i think its something about the kernel i used(elementalX 2.08) or the no verity version using 1.0.
I will look trough the forum for other versions and i will try to flash them.i will also try to flash a new rom, maybe thats the problem.

The ROM is probably the problem for you. Because now knox is tripped for you many samsung and other services dont work anymore for you on pure vanilla stock. If you like oneUI maybe try out a few roms, they are better than stock. There is also a growing AOSP ROM community, there is a group on telegram you should check out.

WOW!Thats bad.Have you tried the power+power down combo for shutting it down?a thing i can suggest better is to let it drain completly, and try to boot it in twrp,do a wipe and then try again.

Yeah.. the only thing that worked is by rooting samsungs stock rom with TGPKernel but now the entire phone crashes every 2 days

none of the issues detailed in this thread make any sense. If a g965f is bootlooping after an attempt at rooting it, whatever was done in that attempt obviously failed and nothing in this thread really explains why, which mostly seems to be due to the lack of info from the OP and who all has participated thus far. We have no idea what baseband the OP is on, what version of TWRP they used, what version of Odin. We are lucky to know its a 965f so far...

a great deal of the devs that make the android community great all hang out here and share their contributions first on here, but you will find that certain phones on this site get far more attention than others, and the S9 area is a sad sad shell of what xda used to be. The reason im replying to your post at all is because xda is not the only place one can go to get good info on phones, but it is a reasonable place to put your trust if youre unfamiliar with the myriad of other sites specifically devoted to android and the users that avoid XDA for one reason or another. Try talking about any pay services on here or anything to do with "software of the illegitimate variety"

[Q] I think my S4 got bricked

Hi all,
from a big smile to sad face... that is how it's been for the past 24 hours
I rooted the phone then went to back up the stock rom after that wiped data, cache, dalvik then went on trying to instal Omega 4.0 and suddenly i got this message my external sd is unreadable. rebooted the phone and noticed that it takes me directly to the downloader screen. i tried to fix the phone by bringing it back to it's stock condition but no luck. I used Odin and so far it's the only thing the phone responds to but no luck with fixing it... I am trying to download the official stock fw hint this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267895
but it stops and never finishes the whole amount of data... this seems the only way for me revive my phone back to life!
any suggestions what should I do now? it stopped showing the downloader screen now since I flashed the kernel drive for the S4 through Odin and now shows the black screen with the "Samsung Galaxy S4" writing.
by the way it keeps telling me that my phone isn't rooted but I did root it! am using twrp recovery.
I just got the phone from t-mobile 2 days ago and am debating on returning the phone back to them as the phone is still bootable to the recovery and that might revoke my warranty "i guess?"
Is it possible just to walk in to t-mobile store and swap the phone with another one since it didn't pass the 2 weeks returning window? I also got the phone insurance for it.
Please help, I sure need my phone back in working condition...
Omega 4 is for the octa core so thats why your phone bricked. If you can grt into download mode odin the stock files. If you can get into recovery try flashing a rom made for the phone. Dont freak out just read read read and youll be fine.

ayeeee ppl trying to reach me over the phone and they can't because of this stupid brick! well stupid me because I didn't know that Omega is for Octa core phone version... Yeah I can get it to download mode and recovery mode but is it possible just flash the stock file from the recovery instead of odin? I am waiting for that stock fw download to finish hint it's on hotfile and going in turtle speed!
your bricked, im pretty sure flashing stock wont help you (hasnt from my past experience) but doesnt hurt to give it a try.
i dont think will just give you another one, even though its in the two week window, because its your fault and not the result of hardware failure. the age old "oh i updated and not it wont turn on" probably wont wort because there are little to none reports of that happening. plus (and this is me assuming, correct me if im wrong) but when in download mode it probably shows custom status, which auto voids any warranty. but once again, doesnt hurt to try.
Unfortunately, from my past experience, your SOL
If the phone turns on and has download and recovery you are not bricked....only soft brick and the odin file should work. Just be patient and wait for it to finish

I used odin for the flashing in the beginning i think i have odin v307
I am waiting right now for the download to finish, been waiting for the past 2 hours even though it's slow transfer but steady 250kbps, i failed doing that with the fast link and tried it over 15 times! no luck

Should I proceed with the rooting again and recover the rom then instal CM rom?
Glad you got your phone back....knew you would like I said only a soft brick....if you do continue and please read always so you know what you are doing before you do it afterall these phones are expensive

Yeah go ahead and root again just be careful with the rom you flash make sure its for m919. I stayed with stock because no rom has the options that came with the phone such as motions and gestures and the camera.

I just did the motochopper method and as I am reading now about the possibility of loosing your root access by future OTAs so am planning to flash that file that keeps your root safe even from future updates "SetUID Restriction" I will prolly keep my basic rom and wait for something better in future.
Thanks

would you suggest me instal the CM? I am debating over here and for sure I will make a good use with the space that can free if I do... hint I have a 64gb msd installed on the phone
the motochopper root didn't go through by the way so I used odin and patched twrp plus did the SetUID restriction thing.
thnx

Well if you want to flash CyanogenMod, make sure its for the m919. I'm kinda lost though, did you still want all the features that Touchwiz has like air gesture, motions etc? Or you don't care for those?

am not really decided about that, does it really matter? all i care about is the blazing speed, low battery consumption and for sure the freedom of moving all the apps to the extSD ... I think all these new features are gimmick and it may take another generation for it to get the best of it. I picked S4 over the HTC one just because the 1080p feature and the funny thing is that I missed on there is no HDMI port on this phone! lol no biggie
tell me more about the touchwiz kernel, is it worth it? I don't see many CRs out there at the moment

Well right now I don't think CM is as stable compared to a TW ROM. FYI there are a lot or ROMS as of now. You have Wicked, Infamous, Darth Stalker, Deathstar. There is also faux and ktoonez kernal available for TW. As for the extsd, you will need to format the card to fat32 for the phone to read it properly.

[H]Lack of ROMS for SM-T321

I cannot find any development for the 3G version of the Pro 8.4
I bought one today and the standard bloatful ROM on this thing won't even allow me to use Google services... so it is quite useless.
Please point me in the right direction or tell me when a T-321 ROM or Recovery is going to be available.
Very surprised to see zero development for this which is obviously superior to the WiFi-only version.

Hi! I know 100% how you feel. I got a Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 and there were 0 roms for it so I ended up creating the first one. I don't have the device which you have but I can create a rom for you (or at least try to). I can't guarantee if it will work or not but we can use trail and error if you are up for it. Let me know if that's cool with you.

awesome! Thanks alot. I do not have programming skills at all but I have been rooting and playing with roms for a few years now. I be more than willing to try any ROM you would be willing to create for my device.
My main problem now is finding the stock ROM since my device is currently stuck in the DOWNLOADING mode in "Cannot boot normally" state.

No worries: I actually am just finishing downloading the stock rom for your device. It's very slow speed from the website. So what I will do is once it finishes downloading I will upload it to google drive and give you the link so you can have a fast download.
As for the rom i'm going to have to do a little bit of research before making it so it will take me a bit. I don't mean to scare you or threaten but if it doesn't work please don't hold me responsible for any damage. Although I don't think anything bad will happen. Worst case scenario I have seen with my tablet is I end up flashing stock again.

Yea, its the Chinese one. That is how I got into this mess...I can access google drive via my VPN service so it should work.
I know the risks involved in playing with custom ROMs.. thanks for the warning though. As long as I have a reliable, non-chinese stock rom it should be fine to test stuff.
thanks so much.

Oh...I actually need a non-chinese ROM.. Im sorry I didnt make that clear.
The CHN one probably doesnt have google account functionality. At least, the stock Chinese model I bought today doesnt. Maybe this is different. I will try. Otherwise, I might ask you to download the North American stock for me if it is not too much trouble.
Sorry for the hassle. What I need is to be able to add my google account and sync data/games.
I will sleep now (its 2:30am here). I'll update you in 7 hours or so on my progress. Thanks!

Thanks so much. PM me your bitcoin address and I will buy you a beer.
EDIT:
This firmware is doing alot of random restarts unfortunately :|
Better than nothing I suppose. I will look around for a fix.
Well I'm glad the firmware worked out for you. I'm going to start working on the custom rom today so hopefully I can get it finished by day after tomorrow. As for the bit coin thing, I'm 14 so no can do.
But if you would like to give me a little something how about a google play credit code?
Edit: just saw the thing about the restart issue. I'll look into it as I have no clue why it would do that on stock.

Just purchased Tab S 10.5... Hyped

What's up fellas. Just picked up a 10.5 tab S (should be delivered tomorrow)
Had a few questions..
I am definitely going to root as I need my titanium backup among others.. Is xposed working on this device?
Mainly for YouTube ad block.
I will be using this as a movie watching device Mainly. Are there any stock based roms that are recommended? I don't want to lose features like multi window by flashing CM.
Also.. I would think a holo or aosp rom theme would be clutch on this device bc of the battery saving factors of an amoled screen, is there anything recommended?
Lastly, any battery saving tips? I usually watch my movies & shows with airplane mode on my Nexus 7, 10 and iPad. Seems to really make a huge difference..
Thanks and I look forward to helping out in this community.
Xposed does work on this device. Stock rooted should be fine for ya, you just need to remove some bloat to remove lag. To save battery, turn adaptative display off and set it to cimema because your watching movies and it would waste battery trying to adjust the tone all the time. Also turn off auto brightness and set it to one that is bright for you. And finally greenify is a good app to hibernate apps after you open them and will stay hibernative until you open it. I got a couple more but cant remeber them right now. Anyway hope you enjoy your tab s! You will see me around the q and a fourms and general fourms most times if you need anything. What version of the tab s did you get? Ex wifi, lte, etc

Thanks for the tips. I have a note 3 so I'm Sorta familiar with the touchwiz bs. I saw a thread on which apps are "safe" to freeze with titanium backup.
Usually someone makes a stock based rom with all the bloat removed but I haven't really seen one yet unless I'm missing it.
I purchased the Tab S 10.5 as I was upgrading my Nexus 7. I was not happy with the Nexus 9. It was built like garbage and had bad battery life and screen bleed. Very disappointed in HTC.
I also purchased the official S book cover which should look absolutely gorgeous.
Is the Chainfire CF auto root the way to go?
Again... Thanks.

Is it the wifi version? Sm-t800? There is a thread on safe apps to delete but someone said it bricked their tablet doing so. Just know what your deleting and it should be fine. There is one debloated rom but the developer has been really busy so he cant fix some bugs. If you have the supported version for cf auto root, then thats the way to root. Before rooting though, please wait till you root as it will viod your warrenty. Wait like a couple weeks incase you have a deffective device. Reports of bad battery happened on this tablet becuase of a loose battery connector. You should get about 8hours screen on time, so if you dont get that much battery life then it might be deffective. Anyway if everything is good root with cfautoroot. I cant wait till we get Andriod L though! And enjoy your tab s.!

Anyway if everything is good root with cfautoroot. I cant wait till we get Andriod L though! And enjoy your tab s.!

Yes.. It is the wifi version.
I'm very familiar with root and rom. Been flashing roms since 2011. Everything from Samsung, Nexus, HTC and LG so I'm familiar with adb to Odin as well as wugfresh toolkit
I'll definitely run it through its paces before tripping Knox and voiding the warranty.. Good looks

Lol. I was a complete noob when i got my tab s in july. I knew nothing about andriod and only apple stuff. I never knew you could install custom recoveries and roms until i got my tab s. Anyway we do have a recovery, its twrp. Twrp 2.7.7.something or somesort is the most recommended build since the latest update has some bugs.

Nope just needs root! Just search twrp in the play store, and it the install, and your device should be chagalwifi if im correct. And done. Now you just have to boot in recovery and it should be there. Heres the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2817100

That's crazy. I've never seen that before where you don't have to flash twrp in Odin on a Samsung device. Crazy.
Do you know if quick boot app works to reboot into recovery or download mode

For me I dont use quick boot. But i have a custom reboot menu and it should be the same. Rebooting into recovery works with an app but rebooting into download mode with the app doesnt work. You have to do it with the vol down, home, power buttons at the same time when your turning your tab s on. And yeah custom recoveries are easy to install now. As long you have root, it just replaces a recovery file and done.

Good thing about Flashify is it allows you to make a backup of the stock recovery.

Thank you sir. Looking forward to it. Does this tablet suffer from the non reading sdcard bc of Kitkat? I read that there is an app fix for it? I'm currently looking for a good SanDisk card deal. I bought the 32gb version so a 32gb card should suffice
if your gonna but a tab s 10.5 soon see this. While its a semi loop hole and ymmv, I was the buyer and they had no problem reducing the price on a brand new tab

Oneplus 3 Problem after unbrick

Hello, Good Day to all! I wont take too much of your time but please help me!
My Oneplus 3 suddenly bricked itself, I dont know how or why but it just powered off and then when I tried to boot it up it was hard bricked. Now I've managed to fix it by following the Mega Unbrick guide for Oneplus 3 and it boots up, but the problem is it crashes during boot, and it randomly crashes after a few minutes which then leads to the boot logo crash, I have to "let it rest" so to speak for a few minutes so that it would bypass the boot crashes. Once it got past the crashes some apps are not responding like Twitter, Messenger and so on. Stock apps are fine it's the newly downloaded ones that are not responding, I tried numerous factory resets using the stock recovery and TWRP but no luck.
I am on Nougat 7.1.1 on the latest OxygenOS version, Unlocked bootloader with systemless root. I haven't tried flashing a custom rom the only thing I tried to flash was the Stock Rom. I also noticed that the WiFi and the Data/Signal was particularly weaker since the messages would not load, I need to actually check the app for it to sync. When I got Messenger somehow working, the messages would not even load up.
Any ideas what the problem is? Any help is deeply appreciated, Thanks in Advance!

This sounds like an hardware issue, have you tried method 2 of the unbrick tool, perhaps you could try to re-download it, have you unzipped it? If it boots let it boot and then upgrade to a new OOS version and then you can do whatever you want. If it doesn't work after you followed my suggestions you might wanna contact Oneplus, don't worry even though your bootloader is unlocked you still have full warranty..

I did the method 2 of the unbrick tool, I've done it like twice or thrice now. I have the latest version of OOS, I am afraid to flash a custom rom because after it flashes in TWRP it immediately crashes, it does not even give me a chance to clear the dalvik or reboot. It crashes no reboot or anything.
But thank you I didn't expect anyone would reply well I regained my faith in humanity in forums
Sidenote: What custom rom would you suggest? or is the stock rom better?

I would suggest VertexOS. It's simple and really fast, EAS and Voxpopuli takes peformance per watt to the next level, if you like feature you might try Zenixx RR.

Question "Rooted" now what?

Oneplus finally came through with my bootloader unlocking token. Not to mention all the hoops T-Mobile had me jump through. With that being said im in possession of my very first fully rooted phone that just happens to be a 9 Pro.Any suggestions on which modules I can command Majisk to install first? How bout any general pointers thus being this is my first experience free and in full control of my 9pro.?
Here's some ideas:
What Magisk modules are you using?

To be honest, I would hold off until we have a working TWRP build, especially if this is your first experience of root, etc

I was thinking the same thing .I just thought maybe there are some safer mods I should do in the meantime.
@Shanemichealrowland
I've been rooting Android for many years now. I always read read and read some more before I begin to install anything and I always wait until there is a working custom recovery and make a FULL backup of every partition and transfer it to a USB drive and or my computer first thing. Make sure to backup your efs as well so that if you lose your IMEI at some point it too can them be reflashed using fastboot. These are things I've always done and will continue to always do. Many users get excited and rush out to install things and don't read enough about their device and end up with an expensive piece of plastic and glass. If you always wait and read everything and make sure you fully understand how your device works before you install things then you will always have a great experience and never have to go through the bad feeling of ruining your expensive device. I read everything in a forum about my device first. You can't go wrong doing things that way. I hope this helps. OnePlus makes great devices! I'm using my OnePlus 6t now to type this and I still love it!! Welcome to XDA my friend.
Edit added: I see you're from Houston. Me too.

There are Magisk modules but if you get into trouble you need to be able to access recovery, OnePlus's default recovery isn't quite as all encompassing as TWRP

Afaik you can delete problematic magisk modules in safemode. Plus I havent used TWRP pretty much for anything with OnePlus 8 pro and after. That just helps me understand better how things work. Plus because I use Linux msm is useless to me but thats another topic
Edit: Dont get me wrong, not trying to convince people to mod/flash anything. Just pointing out that TWRP is not necessity.

Could you clarify this? What procedure do you follow in the event of a brick? I use Linux exclusively and would prefer to be able to recover from a brick using Linux instead of relying on MSM, but I'm not clear on all the steps MSM does or where/how I would find the specifics needed to do the same thing myself.

Ive only done that once myself and that was with 6T. But basicly you need to flash every partition etc via terminal

Ok, I've flashed all partitions before, but I thought there was more to MSM's steps than that. E.g. fixing the partitions themselves, or some sort of voodoo required to recover from any sort of soft brick.

AfaIk there is not that much. It locks bootloader though and IF something goes wrong that could cause issues. One of the reasons ive never used it.
Edit: Ill correct myself. MSM uses EDL mode. And if device is borked that badly then only it works. And imo should be used only then
Edit2: One could try using virtual machine to use MSM with Linux but I have zero knowledge how that would play out

Right, I've been in situations with my last phone where EDL was my only option and I had to use MSM. I have dual boot on a laptop for those occasional Windows-only things like MSM. In the past I've found the USB passthrough to be unreliable for this purpose using a VM in virtualbox, though I haven't tried in a few years so it may have improved.
