Is double tap to turn off screen possible - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

As the title suggests is it possible to double tap on empty area of Home Screen to turn the phone off just like we use Double tap to wake the phone.
This was an inbuilt feature on Asus Zenfone 5z and seems counter intutive to have only one option to turn the screen on and not off here.
Regards

One option; with Nova launcher

Yes, likely via custom ROMs.
Also, probably via custom launchers. Nova Prime allows double-tap to "lock screen". Double tap to "screen off" very likely via a specific 'Nova activities' option but I haven't figured this out yet.
EdXposed ---> install GravityBox ---> it's then possible to turn screen off via double-tap on lock screen or via double-tap on status bar.

You can use edge screen. SoftKey Edge. There is a lock option. It is not double tap but it works.

you can add the screen off icon at navigation bar with a samsung app called Navstar, with that you can single tap to turn off the screen

Good Lock - Navstar adds a navigation button to turn the screen off

I dont see any gestures for that in nova launcher?

You must have the prime license, in gestures&inputs there are multiple options to choose from, for each gesture you can choose any action available, you can even have the same action assigned to multiple gestures, I use one finger down to lock, and also double tap to lock

As i already have Nova prime, this worked perfectly. Thanks.

Nice just learned something new. Used nova star and added screen off and notification bar button. Now I have 5 buttons readily available.
Wish you could open and app with a button. That way I can reserve the power double tap for another app.

Feeling seriously numb right now. I've used Nova (Prime) for years, and never knew that was there. Searched all over for a good program to sleep/ lock. Found a very simply one (Screen Lock Widget 1.0) which is no longer available, but I have. Works great. No resources used. But having the ability in Nova is great.
So.....thank you for sharing that. It's the simple things in life.

It makes no sense why Samsung would give us the means to tap awake our screen but not add that option to turn it off.

That was a weird decision for not including double tap to sleep. It's like making an automatic car with clutch where the clutch is only used for the reverse lol.
Anyhow, this is by far the best app on the playstore that can put the phone sleep and still use the default One UI.
The nice thing about it is that you can also tap on the status bar to put the phone to sleep while using an app for instance.
Tripe tap on the home screen is recommended though, you'll understand why after using it for a while

That is very interesting, I never use always on display and it seems like the Note 10 has a lot of issues. For instance Samsung voice recorder app doesn't play recorded audios while the screen off( stops playing after 2min or so).

I just tried Nav Star app from within Good Lock (From Samsung App store) and added 2 extra buttons.
Thanks to the user who recommended it earlier, now I can turn off phone as well pullbdown notification bar from the Navigation bar, if I can get used to these extra buttons I might as well keep them.
Yes software wise they do need to improve a lot of things here.
1. First Install Good Lock :
http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.android.goodlock
2. Then Install Nav Star : http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.systemui.navillera

Well, very useful indeed, but I prefer hiding the nav bar, just to avoid screen burn in and to get some more screen area

Swipe from bottom to multitask!

I've been looking for a way to multitask more easily than holding down Home, which i find a bit uncomfortable.
After trying wave launcher, Home2, and many other multitaking-ap switching etc. apps, I've now found a solution that I like, and thought I'd share with you all.
What this solutions allows, is that you swipe your finger from the bottom of the screen and up, and the default multitasking bar appears. (You can swipe/press anywhere.)
I've used an very smart litle program called "Swipe Starter" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tora.mamma.swipestart&feature=also_installed
Don't let the logo fool you it's very good. The only thing is that it's translated to english very poorly, so I dont think I know all of the dunctions, but it works.
Once installed, open the app and go to "markersetting". Press "The first marker". Check start. Choose to start, select "activity", and select "Recent apps" ( which is multitask shortcut). Position; I've chosen bottom center Marker colour: none Marker thick: large.
(vibration also has to be ticked, then unticked, under "Appsetting", and then it won't vibrate).
Then you swipe from the bottom, and your multitask menu will appear!

I use Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher can also do the same.
Depending on what launcher you use there are ways to do it without the need of this app. Nova launcher has a few was to do this. 1st is Gestures and Buttons options in setting menu. Alternatively you can set a gesture to any of the icons you have in the dock .This is the one i us ,touch my apps icon it opens the drawer ,swipe on it it shows recent/open apps .
But good find all the same for those that choose not to use differing launchers.
The launcher can only do their gestures if you're on the home screen as far as I know ?
Making them pretty much useless multitasking..
This works in every app.

Give Trigger a try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.varience.triggerlimited
You can create gestures for a lot of settings including things like pulling the notification bar or switching to the previous app.
Recent apps is one of the possible gestures.
For this app, you could create a gesture to be drawn or you can set one of the quick-actions to be one of the actions.
I set the swipe up action to be Recent Apps, swipe left to be go back to the previous app, swipe right to show All My Apps, and swipe down to lock the phone.
Give it a try. Its unbelievably useful!

Trigger is like My Gesture Shortcut Launcher where there's something permanent on the screen that you have to click to activate the gestures.
GMD is better because you can do it without clicking on anything but GMD doesn't support custom gestures unless you pay.
I personally use LMT that can be downloaded from XDA itself. It's similar to GMD but we can't create custom gestures though..

Actually, there's a difference.
With the app, Trigger, you don't have to click on anything to activate gestures.
That's only if you want to activate the actions that you've drawn gestures for.
There's another feature, called "Pulling the Trigger", which is pre-setting 4 actions. Then when you just swipe the trigger in the pre-set directions and let go, it'll activate that action.
In that aspect, its similar to the GMD part about activating without clicking anything. The real killer part is that any of the actions that can be set as gestures can also be set as a quick-action. So you can customize everything freely. That feature is available in the free version.
Maybe with SwipePad?
On my SGSII I used SwipePad to make a "hot corner" on the upper left side of the screen (statusbar) which triggered a menu-selection of apps and shortcuts.
I just tried it to trigger the "nova launcher recent apps" shortcut but it doesn't work right (not every time) but maybe with the "multitask shortcut" you mentioned...
EDIT: SwipePad is the more beautiful app but it seems to have problems with ICS. I've tried the nova launcher shortcut and the mentioned app "multitask shortcut" -> both doesn't work reliable.

wow ok, I'll give it a shot then, though I don't think it'll be better for me than LMT but let's see how.
Update : Ok after trying I think the pulling the trigger is pretty good.. it's like the double finger gestures in LMT except it's with 1 finger. only thing the trigger icon is quite ugly and even if i change it to something more discrete, I still have something always there on the screen. I love the "switch to previous app" function, very handy for multitasking.
Pros and cons I guess.
The multitask app is a paid one. Any alternatives for free?

To be honest this looks very similar to the already well known and supported Swipe Pad, i havent tried this myself yet but from the screen shots it doesnt look as polished as Swipe Pad is. It gives you the option of setting a corner or spot on the edge of the screen to swipe from. you can select set shortcuts, apps, widgets, multitask apps, recently and favourite contacts if you get the addons.

[Q] KnockOn with Nova Launcher?

All,
I just installed Nova Launcher and noticed I can double knock to wake the screen to get in, but it seems like I have lost the ability to double knock to put the device to sleep. I have to double tap the top navigation bar to do so.
Anyone have this same issue?
Thanks!
I don't use the Nova launcher but I've got the double tap to wake from a kernel.
I can't double tap to sleep from anywhere, I need to be in lockscreen for that to work. Think of one playing flappy bird...

It's a different launcher, so its wont have the stuff LG put into their launcher by default. You can set the double tap action in nova launcher by going to the nova settings > gestures > double tap
I dont think there is a native way to link the action to locking the screen, but you might be able to bind it to an app that will lock the screen.
you can make nova double tap status bar to lock screen. thats what most people have done.
I myself havent moved off the stock launcher yet, it is nice.

There's a simple solution to this. Download 'Screen off' from the play store and then set double tap on Nova's gesture settings to open 'screen off'
Et voila
The G3 TweaksBox has the option to add knock to the lower navbar as well.
Similarly I use "Soft Lock Screen" app which does the trick smoothly in Nova; install it and assign to double tap nova action, that's it!

Knock to Lock

Hey guys, loving this phone so far. Was wondering if there was an alternative to the double tap to lock feature if not using the stock lg g3 launcher. I am too accustomed to using nova and that is the only thing i can't get it to do anymore. ( I also like how i can use the "ok google" hotword from any screen while using nova) I can still use knock code and the double tap to turn on the screen, but i cant do it to lock the phone. Any suggestions? I have seen apps were i can tap the icon to lock and what not, just wondering if there is anything like the official lg feature where you can tap any open area on the home screen to lock the device. thanks!
If you stick to the stock launcher, a double tap locks the screen. Don't know any other launchers with that feature yet...
Edit: I got it to work in apex. Changed the behavior of a gesture and tired it to shortcuts--> activities--> soft lock
(Soft Lock) is an app I downloaded from the play store to test this.
I set it to double finger swipe up but you can set it to double tap too.
Good luck!

Launcher that allows Knock On/Off

okay, so the G6 is pretty sweet. debloated it, installed Nova (LG's three launchers are pretty terrible, especially that cheesy "stretch" effect), everything is pretty much how i want it (not Rooted), except: Nova Launcher doesn't allow Knock On/Off.
i can dbl tap to wake, takes me to the lockscreen. fingerprint reader is whipsmart and FAST, so this isn't so much of an issue. but without Knock Off, i have to wait for the screen to time out OR press the power button. workarounds: tap the thin notification strip at the top twice -- which is hella awkward, when i have this giant screen; or install a 3rd party app -- which kind of nuts when the phone natively supports this functionality.
anyone know of an alternate launcher that won't inhibit LG Knock Off?
This works fine in Nova, but you have to be rooted. I don't think it is Nova fault, it is just like this in Android.
You can actually try to enable this action in Nova's settings, there is some workaround when you are not rooted, but it won't be same...
Nova has this feature if your rooted, if your not they have a similar one, you double knock to turn off but puts it in standby until your auto-lock kicks in.
I double tap the notification bar with nova not rooted and it works fine no matter what app I have up. Unlike all other nova gestures that only work from home screen.

it's what i'm doing right now -- and i like that, as you mentioned, the functionality is available on any screen. but it's awkward for single hand use. didn't know that Nova gestures only work from the home screen. hmmm ... that's also a consideration.

Yes Nova Prime, Gestures, Double tap.
just upgraded to Prime, tried this. doesn't quite work the way i thought it would: double tap turns the screen off but it also disables the fingerprint reader? (!!) so i then have to tap the screen -- which doesn't turn the screen back on, but instead shows the faint outline of nav icons at the bottom. if i hit the home button, then screen comes back.
that's some weird behaviour just to get something like Knock On/Off. no root for the h870DS, so it looks like i'm stuck for the time being ...
I went through the same thing, trying a bunch of different solutions. Not being rooted and on 7.0+, nothing works (hopefully something will work on 8.0+).
You'll get used to using the power button in the back, and tapping the status bar.

i'm resigned to this, hope so. can't live with that LG launcher, when Nova is so much more functional.
Nova works without root. Double tap(knock) on notification bar to sleep. Truly had nothing to do with nova it works with all launchers. Tried 3
I have the double tap gesture in Nova launcher that locks my screen so it keeps the Knock feature.
Can confirm, i have the lawnchair launcher and was missing the feature, double tap the status bar and it works no mather where or with which launcher.
So nothing works so far if you're not rooted?
I remember Nova asked me to choose between two option for double tap to lock when I set the gesture but I chose the one that just turn the screen black and wait for system lock. Really bad. Not sure what was the other option.

There you go! ?
Have tried using fringer print to unlock? Ive forgotten knock on now
There is a quite good workaround for those who are using Tasker. Together with TouchTask plugin (free in Google Play) you can simulate double tap on notification bar to lock your phone. This way you can unlock the phone with fingerprint without need for entering PIN or pattern etc.
Short instruction:
1. Download and install TouchTask. Give it necessary rights in Settings.
2. Create task in Tasker > Plugin > TouchTask.
3. In TouchTask Configuration menu:
In Actions field select TAP
Leave Selection method set to Point (x,y)
Type 716 16 within Selection point field
Set Number of taps to 2
4. Assign an icon to your task in Tasker
Now you can assign your Tasker task to any available gesture in your 3rd party launcher (i.e. double tap in Nova Launcher). After executing assigned gesture your phone will be locked exactly in the same way as if you were to double tap on the notification bar. This way fingerprint works like in LG stock launcher - no need to enter PIN or Pattern after unlocking phone with fingerprint.

Power button far to Reach? Try Bixby Button Instead

If you are having difficulty reaching power button to put phone to sleep, you can remap the Bixby button to do so.
Its pretty easy.
You should be on at least XXXXASBA firmware.
Add a quick command in Bixby at Advanced Feature.
Command "Turn off Display".
In bixby remap optipn, select single press and assign the command.
The only drawback is it takes a sec to turn the screen off.
Still, sometimes it better than reaching that Monster's button on top. Enjoy!!

You can create a shortcut to lock the screen instead using the same Quick command. Just go to quick command. Select the gear icon next to the command and create the shortcut by selecting Add shortcut to home screen. At least you now get an alternative to double tap on screen.
Double tap to lock screen might also be possible if you use Tasker (I am not sure but I can give it a try)
Thanks, I'm using this now ?
Thanks, this is actually pretty smart.
But I feel like its more for lefties. Still have to reach when holding it in my right hand, so basically makes no difference reaching bixby button or the power button.
If you have "difficulties" reaching the power button... Then you have serious anatomical issues and the phone sl button a is the least of your worries...
Just grab Good Lock, install NavStar and add the screen off button to your navigation bar.
Here's how I have mine set up...
you can use One Hand Gesture+ as well, and set one of the gesture handles to turn off the screen. Simply swipe from either side that you like (similar to how you open Apps Edge) to turn off the screen
