[Q] Does the Redmi Note 8 really support dual-frequency GNSS (i.e. Galileo)? - Redmi Note 8 Questions & Answers

Can someone with the Redmi Note 8 verify that the phone supports dual-frequency GNSS?
Dual-frequency GNSS means that the phone can get really good positioning (down to 30 centimeters).
GPS (US), GLONASS (RU), Galileo (EU), etc all can be used with a dual-frequency GNSS phone for better accuracy.
To figure out whether the Redmi Note 8 really does support GNSS,
Install GPSTest (Play Store), or GPSTest (Fdroid).
Run GPSTest and let the phone get a location fix.
Post a screenshot like the following. This screenshot is NOT from a Redmi Note 8 phone. Look at the Carrier Frequency (CF) column. We need to see either L5 (GPS) or E5 (Galileo) to be use that the phone really has a dual-frequency GNSS chipset. Most phones have a single-frequency GNSS chipset.
If the Redmi Note 8 does indeed supports dual-frequency GNSS, then we can add to the list of Android devices with dual-frequency GNSS.

Hi!
Thanks for taking the screenshot. Here is the direct image of your URL. It shows many satellites, including Galileo. However, it does not show any L5 or E5 frequencies, which either means that the phone did not get a chance to get a fix on L5 or E5 frequencies, or that it does not support dual frequencies for GNSS.
Another way to verify whether the phone actually supports dual-frequency GNSS, is to find a good teardown article that shows photos of all chipsets in the phone.

i will be able to test a Redmi note 8T later this week when it arrives too.

update: Note 8T.

Thanks for testing!
Then the Redmi Note 8 or 8T do not support dual-frequency GNSS. Emphasis on the dual-frequency.

I know this is an old thread, but now my Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro does show all 4 global systems. See the attached screenshot. And that's not the only ones visible to my phone; the list continues. I don't see much point in adding more.

Question
Hello s7yler! Thanks you very much for deep review of Blackwiew Alife P1 Pro! :good:
How did you enter to the engineer mode on this phone to see names of camera modules?
Which special code did you use?
Can this thing be rooted and run xposed?
For engineer mode, paste:
*#*#3646633#*#*
into the dialer.
Any tip on how to tweak it?
Blackview forum & OTA
Sorry I can answer the last question but just wanted to contribute that I understand Blackview have recently opened the sourcecode for this phone and have a forum also on their website for questions..seems like a new OTA update is being prepared.
Another (written) review online here: Blackview Alife P1 Pro review
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1ItEpI2ezwJaXo2eUpQWW5BNTg/view
source code for the kernel can be found there.
FYI I just ordered one for fun and to port CM 12.1 and 13 onto it
Update: The CPU clocks at 1.0 GHz in reality. Blackview tried to screw us over there

Actually if you watch my video in post #1 and go to time 20:45
You see that it says Possible CPU types: 988Mhz
Declared cpu type 1300Mhz
So I'm not surprised
Aight, CM 12.1 runs Everything works except fingerprint. Once I got that implemented, I will release the build

Question Enable 5G before OTA Update

Is it possible to enable 5G in the Indian variant of One Plus 9 Pro? I know I cannot test 5G network. I tried to edit the carrier_policy.xml. This was the output.

Also is it possible to enable the rest of the bands like North America Varient?
same question.
I do have this same question
I'm positive that the indian version might not have the physical antennas for 5g built inside, the north American does because apparently 5G is so important that every new phone in America needs it. Im guessing its the same thing like with the International version of the Galaxy Note 21 where they don't have the 5G antennas and the North America does but they sell them the same price no matter what.
But who knows I could be wrong

You need a 5g plan enabled sim and you should ask your provider if they have 5g coverage in your area.
If 5g is enabled in your phone. You shud select 5g in network type. Also options like Smart 5G will be enabled in settings. The sim should be in sim slot 1 if dual sim phone.

You can check few differents way to get UE Capability Information message: https://cacombos.com/contribute.

Question NFC chip / Mifare Classic support

Hi,
Does anyone know if the Oneplus 9 [Pro] has an NFC chip supporting Mifare Classic? That usually means a chip from NXP. I have checked
MCT COMPATIBLE_DEVICES (and INCOMP.) and
ShopNFC NFC-list but they are not listed (and actually the shopnfc list has Pro 7 listed as not classic compatible, but the MCT document says the opposite, so even if someone know that 9 [pro] has the same chip I am not really convinced).
If you have a 9 [Pro] and a Mifare Classic card (quite a lot of travelling/bus cards and access cards/keyfobs using that variant) and want to help,
download MCT from F-droid or Google Play and see if the phone recognizes a card (should give a pop-up with something alike "New tag found").
Would help a lot in my decision of buying a new phone. Currently using Oneplus 6.
Thanks
It seems to detect my bus card which is migrate classic. It only take a long time to make a dump, don't know if that is normal..

Ohh thank you!! Perfect. That is a 4k card, so takes quite some time to read. I assume that you have a 9 Pro, the screenshot resolution seems correct also.
I only wish it had a 3,5mm connector as well, then it would be a no-brainer. (Hm, maybe I should start a new thread to hear if there are any usb-c splitters that supports fast charging...)
I have the 9 pro indeed.
Maybe this adapter is what you are looking for....

Good.
Yes I've seen those, but I'm afraid that it will not support fast charging, especially since Oneplus requires an original cable *and* an original charger. But will probably give it a try.
For future reference, I also got an answer from Oneplus:
"We would like to inform you that both OnePlus 8 Pro and 9 Pro comes with SN100T NFC Chipset which is manufactured by NXP."

Question Why don't support GPS L5 band? It's GPS accuracy worse than 5 years ago?

Snapdragon support GPS L1+L5 bands from Snapdragon 845 in 2018. Some device from 5 years ago, such as Poco F1 and Xiaomi Mi 8 both support GPS L1+L5 signal.
Redmi Note 12 Turbo use Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 which also supports GPS L1+L5 .
But Xiaomi DISABLED GPS L5 on Redmi Note 12 Turbo. Will they disable it on Poco F5 too?
Maybe it's software restricts, any method to bypass?
There is a app to test if your device support GPS L1+L5. If someone buys this phone, I hope you can test it in this app.

On Poco F5 Pro the same case, L5/E5 not available
I'm switching from POCO F2 Pro and I'm wondering about a return because we're going back technologically
It does seem odd that they would disable it, but I highly doubt that you would actually notice a practical difference in normal use. This article suggests that only 17 satellites are operational for L5, and anything less than 18-24 is of limited use. They are not launching more until 2027, so there is no rush to have it in phones.

I confirm that F5 Pro (mondrian) also lacks L1 and L5 bands.
Same here only poco f5 Google maps always shows low accuracy and not able to calibrate, only show high after I clear app data, but once the.app is opened for the second time.. thing go back to low accuracy mode and nothing can be done until app data is cleared. This looks accuracy becomes troublesome when in Walk mode in maps
