Google Playstore Dark Mode - Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact Questions & Answers

For the last 3-4 days I've noticed Playstore has dark mode enabled at night but is back to white during the day time.
Does anyone know where the controls for this feature is? I prefer dark mode fulltime but can't seem to find a toggle or way to control it.
My device is stock, unrooted with Android 9 August security patch.

Go to Developer Options and look at the Night Mode settings. I think your phone is set to time of day.

Rotate Icon Not Displaying On Developer Preview 2

I can't seem to get my rotate icon to work on Developer Preview 2. I've turned off the Auto-Rotation option, but it's still not showing up. I wasn't a part of the 1st Developer Preview, but I don't think that plays a factor. Is anyone else experiencing this?

it works for me. it doesn't show up unless I rotate the phone.
I can't get it to appear for the life of me! It's driving me nuts!
if you have auto-rotate enabled in display settings, it will NOT show up. If its disabled, you should see the icon if you rotate the screeen
My auto rotate is turned off (not blue), but when I go to YouTube, for example, and attempt to rotate the phone, the rotate icon toggle doesn't appear. I cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out why.

Just tested and it appears to the far right of the home button.

It finally works. It started showing up a few minutes ago. Go figure!
still doesn't work for me, have you done anything to enable it ?
No. It just started appearing. Very odd!
Ya. I can't get it to work either. Tried everything. Hopefully mine will "just start to work" to.
I just ended up doing a clean flash and now it works.

How to Disable Screen Wake for Ring app

Hey all, my ring doorbell app wakes the screen anytime I get an alert. I want to keep the notifications on but don't want the screen to wake. It wakes even in my pocket which I want to of course avoid. It may just be a bug in the app but I should be able to limit that from happening. Or so I hope anyway.
I have tried the following.
1. Switched all notifications pertaining to the app and individual cameras to "sound only"
2. In the app I have disabled "alerts open full screen video"
3. I have disabled heads up notifications globally through ADB.
4. Disabled ambient display.
5. Disabled notifications on lock screen.
I'm at a loss on what to do next. Any ideas are appreciated at this point.
TIA

I've struggled with the same thing for months. It never used to do it, but after an update earlier this year it became the new normal for me.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Hopefully somebody chimes in with some sort of work around.
I'm having the same problem with a Sony XZ1 phone (Android 8.0.0). I spoke with Ring at length and it's 'apparently' a problem with my phone, not their App.
I think that's a load of rubbish and something they need to address and fix. I installed the App on another Android phone running an earlier version of software, the App installs with different options and doesn't wake up the screen. So it's obviously dependent on the OS version but as other Apps don't have the same problem I can only conclude that it's an issue with the Ring App.
Has anyone tried uninstalling the app and then install an older version from APK mirror? Not even sure its on there but it's worth a go

That's a great idea. There are plenty of versions to try on APK mirror, one or two per month from 2018. Not a good sign for a reliable and stable app.
I'll give it a go later unless anyone gets there first and can suggest a 'good' version to try
Were you able to find an older version that doesn't have the screen wake behavior?
edit: Pixel 2 - going back to 2.0.66.8 still has the screen wake behavior regardless of notification setting.
edit 2: 2.0.57.2 does the same thing...
Looks like the latest ring version finally let's you fix this. Select your devices, go to notification settings, then select sound only. The default is sound plus pop up. I no longer have the issue after making the change.
Can anyone confirm if turning off the 'plus pop' in the ring app settings works? I have a new pixel 3 on Android pie and the app is still turning on the screen at every alert event with settings set to just sound or just silent.
I'm having the same issue with the ring app. It wakes the screen. Really sucks when phone is in my pocket. I have tried every option and or combo of options. I have a pixel 3a on Android 10. Android 10 does have a option to wake screen for notifications found under display advanced, lock screen. But it is turned off
Still a problem on Android 10, No combinations of settings has been able to stop this for me. Of course Ring denies this even though I have sent a logcat to them.

Tip: Turn on night mode under developer options

Sorry if this is old news for everybody here, but I saw night mode option under developer options and said what the heck and set it to always on. I did not expect it to do much because I already set the theme to Dark in Settings and that doesn't seem to affect anything but the notification bar.
well lo and behold, a couple of apps are now dark that previously weren't even though the apps have no dark theme setting. Namely Instagram and play store. Go figure. Of course there apps that I really want to be dark -- Gmail, Settings, and hangout -- aren't. That's Google for you.
Also Google Drive and Google Photos become dark

Sure, that mode it's intended only for battery saver mode, but you can force enable it; if you use a lot the battery saver feature, you will notice that it will reset the dark mode when turned off; so if you want a convenient switch, use the app linked below; you can set a QS Switch with it.

Phone resets dark mode when it is in charge also, does this app force it enabled also in this case? Thanks

Instagram too.

It resets only when turning on and off battery saver; but, yes, the app can easily toggle dark mode once it gets reseted, it's easily accessible in Quick Settings menu; otherwise you will have to go into developer options and enable it from there, everytime.
The following is only needed in Pie btw, Android 10 already has changed the way dark mode behaves.

It's an old bug - turn off the dark mode in messaging and it will be fine.

could you please elaborate a bit?
Do you mean we can prevent the battery saver switching from disabling the dark mode always on setting? How exactly? Thanks
Google it. After unplugging charger it returns to night mode. Without this setting in messaging it won't return.
It must be this, becouse I am using battery saver mode all the time.

Auto Dark Mode for OnePlus 7 Series

Hi
I've got myself an OnePlus 7T and also enjoying my Pixel 4. On the Pixel 4 it is possible via third party app to automate the on/off of Dark Mode. However I cannot see it's possible with the OnePlus 7 Series?
I've heard that it's somehow possible with Tasker. But has anyone here experience with that?
Thanks.
Go into developer options. There should be an option to force dark mode

It's there, but I wouldn't use it. It makes elements/texts wrong color on many apps that probably don't support it.
I.ie grey text on black background,

Yea. Tasker makes it a breeze. You can automate it however you want.
Spesific apps can turn it on, others can turn it off.
Certain schedule, time or days, you can make it every weeknight, two hours Saturday and the whole of Sunday if you want.
Connected to WiFi networks or Bluetooth devices can enable it.
You can even have it enabled during low light only, or under a certain threshold. The list is unlimited ?

Nice. But is this system wide ? Do you have any Tasker scripts or what it's called that can do this? ?
Cheers

Tasker only changes system settings, it doesn't "create" its own stuff. So basically It's simply toggling the dark mode on or off depending on the parameters you set. If your phone has system wide setting, then that's what it'll toggle.
It's an automation tool that can automate what you currently do manually.
Have you got tasker? Have you played with it?
Just create a profile you want, for example: time
Then set the parameters (example 7pm to 7am)
Then choose an action, search for dark mode. You can either set it to toggle or to on/off
If set to on, make an exit task too, again chose dark mode and off.
If you want a certain app to trigger it, then choose that app, etc. You can have an or or conditions etc.
Think: If this and this but not that then X.
Look at tasker tutorials for more parameter alternatives.

Question It's so weird, where this come from?

P6P with A12.1
Last night I woke up from a bad dream and took up the phone to see what time it was, then I saw a few words on the the phone's lock screen: "Tap to turn the torch on" . I don't know if it is there with A12 or the P6P and how long it has been there on the lock screen because I rarely use the phone in the dark. Today, I try to find where such a set up came from, I just couldn't. At first, I think it must be a set up in the phone's lock screen setting, but no, nothing like that is there. Then I think may be it is siavash79's AOSP Mods, but I can't find it either.
It's me only or someone has the same option on there lock screen to "Tap to turn the torch on and off" in the dark? And perhaps can tell me where this setting option came from.
It's Google At-a-Glance. It's supposed to be a helpful "feature", so you can quickly toggle on the flashlight when grabbing your phone at night.
You can try to deactivate this under
-> Home Settings
-> At-a-Glance
-> Untick "Flashlight"

Thanks to give the hints, I finally figure out what caused my confusion. I switched to Nova Launcher from day one and never on Pixel Launcher! I remembered I had read quite sometime ago on this forum, someone mentioned that "At-a-Glance" doesn't support third party launchers and perhaps this is the reason I never see it before. I still can't go to Home Setting with Nova, had to switched back to Pixel Launcher to see what you had mentioned. Learnt new thing every day, thank you.
