[Guide] Wireless DEX to TV/Monitor - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi ya,
I've found that I can use DEX mode on my TV, without connecting my USB/HDMI cable, even though Samsung doesn't allow Screen Mirroring while in DEX mode !!
This guide is for Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 - I presume it also works on the Tab S5e and Tab S6, though, I haven't tested either of those.
Prerequisites
Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 [or Tab S5e/S6??]
TV or Monitor with Android TV built-in, or Android TV box connected, or Google Chromecast connected
WiFi network to which your Tab and TV/Chromecast are connected
App 'Google Home' installed on your Galaxy Tab
At least one functional finger or ability to use S pen
Set-up
If not already done so, sign-in to your Google account in both the 'Google Home' app on your Galaxy Tab; and on your Android TV/Chromecast
If not already done so, in the 'Google Home' app, add your Android TV/Chromecast
Activation
If not already done so, launch DEX mode on your Galaxy Tab
Open the 'Google Home' app from the app draw [or taskbar if it's already running]
Tap on your Android TV/Chromecast device and select 'Cast my screen'
Optional
Connect Wired/Wireless Mouse and/or Keyboard to your Galaxy Tab
On the Galaxy Tab, turn brightness to minimum, or even use a brightness app to set brightness to below minimum
Culmination
Do stuff
Marvel in awe at the ingenuity, and possibilities
Say something nice to someone that you care about
Thanks, I hope you enjoy

Great find, thanks...:good:

Awesome find...Thank you...it helps alot

No, it's only screen mirroring when using this method

Sad. However, when in dev settings force experimental desktop is checked, I get a wireless Stock-Android Desktop Mode, with lots of lag on the mouse.
But this seems fixable :-o

I guess it's a different story now for the devices with oneui2.5 which got the wireless dex
connect chromecast monitor/tv
connect phone with chromecast
connect keyb/mouse
start dex
enjoy
is that it?

I think it needs miracast not chromecast

I can Dex from a Samsung 10e to a Samsung 6 series NU6900 without wifi or a hotspot sounds too good be true

[Q] Display Settings - Wireless Display - What works? [SOLVED]

For Nexus 7 (2013) owners:
Lets discuss <any> working methods for using Display Settings, Wireless Display, on Android 4.3+ with Nexus 7 (2013).
1) I want to explore what happens when Wireless display is turned on - and what it takes for wireless displays to be found.
Fine if you use Google Chromecast, or any other devices as wireless displays.
2) What types of data can be pushed/streamed by "wireless display" - e.g. video, audio, VNC, RDA, files, etc?
You get the idea.

Good info. Thanks
I *assume* the feature does *something* in Android 4.3+, and maybe *something* specifically on the Nexus 7 (2013).
Of course this assumption might be wrong, e.g. I'm not sure what Wi-Fi, three dots menu, Wi-Fi Direct accomplishes either. LOL
So please inform us if anyone has knowledge of what happens with Wireless Display turned on, or how to make it work.
I'm assuming it's for Miracast. I don't have any Miracast receivers though.
I was hoping it would work with my Apple TV but when I switch on wireless display, it finds nothing.

You are likely correct. I just found this article with some info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracast
The Wi-Fi Alliance maintains a current list of Miracast-certified devices, both source devices and display devices. The technology and certification is fairly new with the first devices being certified in September 2012. As of January 19, 2013, only just over 100 devices in total were certified.
Nvidia announced support for it in their Tegra 3 platform,[8] and Freescale Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Marvell Technology Group and other chip vendors have also announced their plans to support it.[9] Support for Miracast was added to Android in version 4.2 on October 29, 2012.
Both devices (the sender and the receiver) need to be Miracast certified for the technology to work. However, to stream music and movies to a non-certified device there will be Miracast adapters available that plug into HDMI or USB ports.[10]
On 29 October 2012, Google announced that Android version 4.2 (updated version of Jelly Bean) will support the Miracast wireless display standard, and by default will have integrated features for it.[11] As of January 8, 2013, the LG Nexus 4 and Sony's Xperia Z, ZL, T and V officially support the function,[12][13] as does HTC One and Samsung in its Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II under the moniker AllShare Cast. The Galaxy S4 uses Samsung Link for its implementation.[14]
Microsoft also added support for Miracast in Windows 8.1, and announced this in June 2013. This functionality first became available in the Windows 8.1 Preview, and is available on hardware with supported Miracast drivers from hardware (GPU) manufacturers such as those listed above.

PSA: Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 do not support Miracast wireless display
There’s been an ongoing discussion over on Google’s mobile support forum and after much debate, a Googler took the time to weigh in on the issue confirming:
Just wanted to confirm that Nexus 4 is currently our only Nexus device that works with Miracast wireless display on Android 4.2. There was a reference to wireless display on our Help site for Nexus 10, but we’ve since removed that reference. Our apologies for any confusion that may have caused.

How to connect Google Nexus 4 to PTV3000?
If anyone has the PTV3000 it would be great if you could test on new Nexus 7 (2013) and/or any device running Android 4.3.
The latest firmware update to the PTV3000 is now PTV3000-V2.2.16
From PTV3000_V2.2.16_FW_Release_Notes:
Supported Intel Wireless Display platforms:
Windows 7, Intel Wireless Display V3.1.29.0, Wifi driver V15.1.1
Windows 7, Intel Wireless Display V3.5.41.0, Wif driver V15.3.1
Windows 8 (systems upgraded form Windows 7), Intel Wireless Display V3.5.41.0, Wifi driver V15.3.50
Windows 8 (with Win8 preinstalled), Intel Wireless display, V3.5.41.0, Wifi driver V15.5.7
Windows 8 (with Win8 preinstalled), Intel Wireless display, V4.0.18.0, Wifi driver V15.6.1
Supported Miracast platforms:
Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android 4.1.1 or above)
Samsung Galaxy Note II
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
LG Optimus G (Android 4.0.4 or above)
Google Nexus 4 (Android 4.2.1)
Sony Xperia (various models with Android 4.0.4 or above)
Enhancements & Bug Fixes:
Preliminary support for WiDi Gen4 low latency mode. A new option should appear in the WiDi application for prioritizing speed over quality. The “AVSYNC” uboot variable also has new functionality, though it is still currently set to “1”. Change customer_pre_script.sh appropriately if you would like to change the default behavior.
NOTE-1: AVSYNC automatically changes from 1 to 2 when entering “low delay” mode in WiDi, and similarly from 2 to 1 when exiting “low delay” mode.
NOTE-2: Audio is currently not working in low delay mode.
AVSYNC = 0: Disabled.
AVSYNC = 1: Video FW uses Audio PTS for AV sync operation
AVSYNC = 2: Video FW uses STC, System Clock, (ignore audio and decode as fast as possible) for AV sync operation.
AVSYNC = 3: Combined mode. AVSYNC = 1 for DECODER_LATENCY > 75, AVSYNC = 2 in the rest of cases.
Nexus4 Android 4.2.2 compatibility issue – Fixed a rare connection issue related to RTSP.
Improved low power usage for EU region, by suspending to DDR. DC power usage was measured at 290mW. With a 70% efficient A/C adapter it should be around 440mW.
Fixed incorrect setting of decoder latency which was causing video to be early by a couple frames (A/V Sync issue).
Known Issues:
Audio does not work with WiDi 4.x Low Delay mode.
Samsung S3 occasionally does not connect. We are working with QCA on the issue. It appears to be a WiFi driver/firmware bug.
Nexus4 streaming issues:
Phone stops sending data abruptly while streaming high definition video. Air sniffer captures show phone stops sending video packets and goes back to scanning. As result dongle waits for at least 10 seconds for the phone to respond and goes back to ready screen if the phone does not respond.
Samsung Galaxy S3 4.1.1 phone bugs:
Connection will fail if this is done: Start Allshare cast app on phone. Lock the screen and let the phone be idle for 10 minutes. Unlock the screen. Remedy: Toggle WiFi switch on phone settings.
Connection halts after playing a video from Video Player application.
Sony Experia Tsubasa (version 7.0.A.3.185) the mirrored video does not show up until there is activity on the handset screen. Fixed in 9.0.D.1.126.
[Intel] Win8 WiDi 3.5.40.0 application hangs sometimes on reconnection, requiring a laptop re-boot..
Installation Procedure
Push and hold the WPS button on the side of the PTV3000 unit for more than 5 seconds.
PTV3000 goes into firmware update mode. Firmware update procedure shows up on TV screen (also shown below on steps 3 to 7).
Use your PC or mobile device to navigate to http://support.netgear.com/product/PTV3000 to check for and download the latest firmware.
Once you have downloaded the latest firmware zip file, please unzip it and locate the ".sbin" file that it contains.
Using the wireless network manager utility on your device, search for "Push2TV" wireless network name (SSID) and connect.
Open a web browser on your device and type http://192.168.3.1 into the URL bar of the browser.
Follow the steps on the web page to upload the firmware image and complete the installation.
Working Device (Netgear Push2TV PTV3000)
Found a working device. The Netgear Push2TV PTV3000.
Plug the PTV3000 into a mini-USB 5v for power. Connect the HDMI to a TV or monitor. The device displays waiting status.
In new Nexus 7 (2013) go to Settings, Display, Wireless Display. Turn on. Press SEARCH FOR DISPLAYS.
The Push2TV <serial #>-PTV3000 appears in the list of Available Devices. A few seconds after selecting the device the projector shows the entire Nexus 7 (2013) display on the TV or monitor screen.
Note: I took the PTV3000 out of the box and did not apply any firmware updates (yet).
I have lots more questions and things to test. My initial questions are:
1) How does it work with portrait and landscape orientation?
2) Does sound get broadcast to the TV or monitor?
3) Since it works on new Nexus 7 (2013) will it also work on 1st generation Nexus 7 (Android 4.2.1 through 4.3)?
4) How do movies look on the TV?
5) Verify this really Miracast, or is there a second mode on PTV3000?
6) What is the firmware level on PTV3000?
I don't have time to do further tests now. But, ask if you have further questions I can test.
Thanks for the suggestions and help so far... especially gksmithlcw
I tested with this over the weekend and it worked like a dream.

I beg to differ on the PTV 3000
I find it to be useless. It projects an image in the middle of the screen. You could never really watch a movie or anything due to the black bars on the sides. It also does not pass through DTS or Dolby Digital Surround Sound. You are far better off using a media server app like BubbleUPNP to stream media. This is just a little toy. It is light years from being serviceable.

It scans for Miracast supported device whenit's turn on. If you have a Miracast device connected to the same network, it will show up and you can display your whole screen on the reciever.
Miracast is not Apple's AirPlay and they are totally different. Although they do similar things.
It's also not DLNA. Most of the time files are being sent through DLNA, so you cant see your contacts, messages, homescreen etc. through DLNA. Miracast send your screen feed to the TV.
Miracast need a Miracast sender and reciever to work just like DLNA needs a DLNA server and reciever and AirPlay needs a server and reciever too.
My Nexus 7 (2013) has Wireless Display (I think its Miracast) since 4.3. I think it will work if you have a reciever. I tried it before with Note 2 to my friend's TV which have Miracast support.(I never try it with N7 before because I dont have a reciever). AOSP have support for Miracast as sender since 4.3 (I think)
You need a very fast network to stream smoothly.
The display will change orientation when you rotate your device.
BubbleUPNP is a using DLNA not Miracast.
Miracast still can't work properly in real life.
ALL OF THIS IS ONLY MY THOUGHTS. CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG
Does anyone else have issues with N7 2013 filling up the screen when connected via miracast? My moto x and N5 fill the screen just fine but the N7 is cropped around the edges.
this device has been working great for me, picked mine up at Wlally-World.
http://www.actiontec.com/303.html#soft
I am also trying to figure out how the miracast feature works or supposed to work with our Nexus 7 2013 model- 5.02 lollipop.
1)My miracast enabled tv (lg model) detects the device.
2)Under cast screen tab in notification panel, tv is not detected but if you enter the more settings options then lg tv is then detected.
3)trying to connect (either from tv menu or nexus menu) results in notification that there is an invitation for connection, then authentication and when the tv shows "miracast is waiting for connection" my nexus stop detecting the lg tv for a few seconds then shows up again but no connection is established. If i insist a couple of times to connect then nexus wifi despite being connected to my home network it cannot connect to the internet.
If someone has an update from miracast feature please post.
cheers

Cast tablet screen to Chromecast?

I have a client who has a new Tab Pro 10.1 and he wants to know how to stream the screen of his tablet to his TV or PC at his office to use for a demonstration and use kind of as a remote whiteboard. He saw someone doing it at a meeting he went to last week, but did not ask how they were doing it. I have searched all around and it looks like he has to be rooted to do it, but it seems unreliable and I don't want to have to fix or set this thing up every time he uses it. I am sure he wont mind rooting his tablet if it means he will be able to stream his screen. I was hoping Chromecast would be able to do it easily, but it looks like that is not a feature yet and it can only be done fairly reliably through Chrome on a computer.
Has anyone done this yet? What do you recommend?
He has a:
Tab Pro 10.1 (stock)
Intel Nuc running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 connected to the TV
Chromecast
Vizio 70" TV
Thanks in advance!

That looks like a wired setup. I should have been clear that it needs to be wireless.

There is an app preinstalled on the Tab - Sidesync 3.0. Need to install the app on the pc also. I haven't used it but I think it does what you want via wifi.
The tablet support screen mirroring (settings -> connections). Works fine on my sony bravia
You can use Chromecast but it will be slow for that. Instead use Miracast (What Brendo is using). There are many Miracast adapters if your TV doesn't have this capability.

It should. I have a bravia
On my S5 there is an option in the Chromecast app which allows casting. On my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, there is no option. I have tested both my S5 and Tab Pro 8.4 with Chromecast. Individual apps, like Youtube and Netflix cast fine, but the Tab Pro won't give me the option to cast the tablet's screen. If you have a Samsung "Screen Mirroring" compatible smart TV it might work (I don't).
On a side note. . . Although I know your client wants wireless, my old Samsung HDMI adapter for my S3 works with both my S5 and Tab Pro 8.4. The Samsung WI-FI All-Share Cast Hub, Wireless HDMI Display Adapter (can't remember the name) might work if you have that plugged into the video source. I didn't purchase it, so I can't test it.
I just recently bought a Chromecast and Tab Pro 8.4. I've been experimenting the last few days.
Basically, casting to Chromecast is going to be limited to apps with built-in Chromecast support. The only way I was able to do screen mirroring was through my WDTV Live set top box. Like Weo said above, you will need a TV with screen mirroring capability. My friend has a Samsung smart tv that he uses screen mirroring all the time.
Here's a nicely put together FAQ about Chromecast: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563143
I think the only way to do screen mirroring to Chromecast is to root your device and install a hack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193

[Q] [SM-T805] Can't enable screen mirroring

Hello, so I've just bought the 10"5 Tab S and I can't enable screen mirroring.
My TV is a Sony KDL-40R470B, I can enable the screen mirroring just fine with Galaxy Note 3, but not the Tab S.
Any idea how I could solve this ?
And, this spanking new Tab S 10.5 doesn't even support Chromecast Screen Mirroring either! Come-on Samsung!!!
I was only successful wireless screen mirroring to an old Samsung miracast device. So, other than using an HDMI adapter tethered, it seems the initial firmware out of the box on the Tab S is ancient technology compared to the Note Tabs and Galaxy phones which can screen mirror to Chromecast.
I would think Chromecast screen mirroring problem would lie with Google and the Chromecast app not Samsung.
If you are rooted you can use the below app to enable it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2812193
Just more android fragmentation garbage apparently.
I found this article a good read though, but it just leaves an Android user in the blind about what supported features will be available.
http://allaboutchromecast.com/chrom...-about-wireless-display-and-screen-mirroring/
Thing is, I'm not using chromecast, I have a smart TV and just enable mirroring with Wi-Fi, I didn't plug anything on the TV.
Works flawlessly with the note 3, but can't enable it on the tab S.
Would that app be worth trying in my case ?
Fixed?

So after 20 minutes of this I sorted it out. I had a private internet access app running so that all my traffic is encrypted and routed overseas. It just sets up a VPN, so I think if you have a VPN running then it won't work. That was my problem, hopefully this helps you.

Best HDMI dongle for screen casting (non-chromecast)?

Hey guys.
I have an hdmi port in my car which hooks up to my oem display. I also have power next to the port so I can power any 12v device.
I used to use a chrome cast with my HTC M8 but that required a screen casting quick setting as casting through the app was not possible when using mobile Hotspot. The whole setup was also very taxing on the phone, and the chrome cast and mobile Hotspot didn't work well together quite often.
So now with the Note 7, what would be my best option for an hdmi dongle that supports direct screen casting? Should I get a miracast device such as a roku stick? I really don't need any more functionality aside from the screen mirroring feature.
Thanks!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009...share+cast&dpPl=1&dpID=41dodRzT2IL&ref=plSrch
it's a bit old, but is made specifically for Samsung devices and relies on Wi-Fi-direct(no tethering, and no existing network required)
it works using the same system as their smart TV's and is confirmed to still work with the S7 edge, so the note 7 shouldn't have a problem either.
Damn, yeah it is a bit older. Also quite expensive compared to CC or rokustick. I do like that it's wifi-direct though. And there's a quick toggle for that on our phones too.

Smartview Not Mirroring Properly

I think Samsung borked something up in Android 10. or at least in its Smartview app. I am unable to mirror to a Miracast WiFi adaptor, nor to a Miracast enabled TV. I enabled Miracast on a Sony TV and connected my Note 10+ to it. It connected to the TV, but it is not mirroring my phone's screen. It will show my photos and videos I have in Gallery, but it won't cast a video from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, or Movies Anywhere. I tried it with a Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor and got the same results.
My Galaxy Tab S5e has no problems mirroring to a Miracast TV or Miracast wireless adaptor. I connected and mirrored my Tab S5e to the exact same devices my Note 10+ connected to. I had no problems playing content from the same apps that I tried on my phone. My Tab S5e is running Android 9
Before I upgraded to Android 10, I had no problems mirroring my phone screen using Miracast.
I have tried rebooting my phone, clearing the cache on both Smartview and the phone, and clearing the data on Smartview. I have also reset my network connections on my phone.
You might have it in Dex mode instead of mirror mode

How do you try to mirror your screen?
Because i go in smart view and from there in smart things. There i have the option to mirror my screen on to my TV.

Yes. I've even tried a couple 3rd party Miracast mirroring apps and got identical results. Samsung borked up something either in Smartview or Android 10. I'm thinking Smartview is the problem.
I just tried it on my Samsung smart TV and got identical results. I couldn't get it to mirror properly on three different devices: a Sony TV, a Microsoft Wirelles Display Adaptor, and a Samsung Smart TV. It could be an issue with DeX, but I can't find where to check.

I am using the Note 10 plus unlocked version. Don't care for 5G at the moment:laugh:
I know that i do not help. But nevertheless you have one opinion.
Did you clear the cache after the last update?

I just discovered that my Samsung TV won't mirror to my phone. When I try to mirror from TV to phone, all I get is the audio. I don't get the picture. Before upgrading to Android 10, I could watch what was on my TV on my phone (comes in handy when I am in the kitchen).

Yes. As well as clearing app cache and app data for Smart View. And it is a fact that my phone is not screen mirroring properly, not an opinion.
I'm tempted to do a factory reset. I just don't want to go through the butt pain of setting everything back up.

I think Smart View is a buggy thing. My phone won’t connect unless the source is set other than HDMI 1 (Sky). Even then I can’t set it to watch TV on my phone.
For me, the most annoying is the fact that I can’t zoom in while playing video in Smart View, like I can when playing it on the phone. Every time I try, I get the error on phone: “Zoom is not supported for this video size (176 x 144)” I’ve no idea what that means, whether it’s to do with Smart View, the Video Player or the TV its self.
Has anyone tried it?
My 10+ won't mirror, but my galaxy tab 4 works perfect.
Maybe it is the phones. Maybe it works flawlessly with Samsung TVs only.

I thought that too. But I get the exact same results with my Samsung Smart TV.

You are not alone brother! I am having same issue with my a70 after android 10 upgrade. Thank you.
Looks like Sammy is deprecating Smart View come October so likely not going to be investing much in fixing defects.
Btw, I also tried it using both One UI and Microsoft Launcher and neither worked. I'm wondering if it is because of DRM.
