Do I need to transplant my G3 motherboard to extract data? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My G3 (D855) is now not powering up at all. When I turn it on there is no reaction at all. I luckily have another "test" G3 and I have tested the battery on that phone. So I have 2 batteries and they are both fine. The only reaction that I am getting from my broken phone is that it does charge the battery. I only know this because I can measure the battery level in the test phone.
I need to extract some information from the phone. My test phone has no value so I thought about following some youtube videos and moving the broken phone motherboard into the test phone. Another option is to heat the motherboard in the oven.
I don't know if the problem is the motherboard or elsewhere.
Before it died completely, there were some problems. Here are the last reactions that I had from it:
The battery was at 70%. When I try to restart it after taking the battery out for 5 minutes nothing happens. Completely dead. But if I take the battery out for, say, 5 hours it displays the startup screen for about 10 seconds and then dies. Then immediately trying to restart it does not do anything. All of these tests were done with the charger connected and then with the charger disconnected. The charger made no difference, and it is a working charger.
So I would like some suggestions that might save me from changing the motherboard.

Changing your motherboard won't help because if you move the dead motherboard into your test phone, your test phone will be dead. The motherboard is your phone with a case on it. Only thing that might work is putting it in an oven.

Does that mean that even if there is a problem with the peripheral units or the power supply but the motherboard is good then the phone will always show some signs of life?

Xperia Play red light

Hi,
yesterday I bought a used R800i, the seller said I just need to charge the Battery. So back at home i plugged it to a charger an the LED near the power button startet blinking. First I thought it´s not a big deal but after a couple of hours it was clear that this is not alrigt. Even if i remove the battery the red light keeps blinking continuous (not 3 times or something similar, just every second once). I don´t know if it´s a software or hardware bug but could you help me to get it fixed?
best Regards
Lukas
It could be empty battery (but voltage level is not high enough to start charging).
Check with flashtool can you enter flash mode or fastboot mode (if you can, then it's probably empty battery)
If you can, check voltage level of battery with voltmeter.
It can be that motherboard is dead, but to be sure, you must know what is voltage level of battery.
For now, try leaving it charging, it might take some time (few hours or more) to actually start charging...
Sent from my R800i using XDA Free mobile app
Over USB i only get unkown device, but USB with the Test Point works, measuring the Batter was 0 Volts but charging over hours didn´t help

If battery have 0 volts then it's dead and (most likely) can't be charged anymore. You need new battery, so you can know is motherboard is working or not.
But that is just my opinion, and i could be wrong...
Maybe to try and charge battery from external source of 5V power , easiest way is cut some usb cable or take two wires from PC's molex connector (red is +5V, black is GND) and charge it for shortly (about 30sec-1min) and measure does it have at least 3.2V. Repeat short charging untill it does. If it stay on 0V then is dead for sure.
I was really able to charge the battery over a cut USB cable. I got it to boot until lookscreen (digitizer does not response) but then the battery turned hot and the Xperia shut down. I ordered now a new battery then it should work again

Digitizer not working could be faulty slider-flex cable or simply software error due overheating. You'll know with new battery...
Flex Cable looks like this, should I get a new one?

Yes, that's slider flex cable.
But wait untill you get new battery. Then you'll know does it have more problems or it is working normally
Sad News, today I got the new battery and i was even able to boot up the phone, but like the last time i was able to boot it up the battery and the mainboard got hot. I think the loading circuit is broken. So there are two options 1. buy a external charger for the batterie or 2. sell the phone as rarely used on ebay
No really I´m selling it, even if i get a charger theres also the problem with the not working digitzer. Thanks for your Help but this is ways to big for me.

Sorry to hear that. Obviously problem is much bigger and hard to tell what is wrong without some proffesional look into it (lot of reasons for phone to get hot by itself - there is short circuit somewhere and that's why it's draing battery fast and causing overheating). I don't think external charger will solve problems.
Anyway, good luck :good:

HTC One X - Dead, no LED, no fastboot, nothing!

My friend gave me his HTC One X to fix (PJ46100) and he said it has been dead for months. After a few diagnostics, and about 30 mins on charge and 10 mins in my PC, it isn't connecting to the PC, I have no word from ADB, the phone itself has no LED light showing, no vibrations, nothing. My aim here is to get it on at LEAST in fastboot/recovery mode. I have never used a HTC One X but being addicted to my 4.3 Desire, I know how the usual HTC fastboot works. I know its power + volume down but is there any other way? I remember my Desire was Power + back button, EVEN though everyone online said it was Power + vol down.... Does the One X have another method?
My mate wants me to get his photos off it, and thats it, its mine
So yeah, any word on what it could be?
Doing loads of research, its a 70% chance of being a battery issue and a 30% chance of the board being dead.
I am not afraid of taking this baby apart so go ahead and ask your questions.
Thanks guys.
(BTW - I may be posting from another account in my replies....)
Hi there, I also have the same problem as yours. No led when charging, not detected by pc, its basically a paperweight. I also had done my research and I can conclude mine is a board issue since the problem occurred after transferring some files from pc and the battery is perfectly fine then. If you believe battery is the culprit, try put the phone in a sealed bag and put it in the freezer. It might bring the battery alive. I have took mine apart and I noticed that during charging, the board will be warm and same goes to the battery. This would suggest the phone is taking the current from the charger.
same problem here
I've revived dead phones where the only issue was that the battery had lost so much charge that it wouldn't charge via the phone's charging circuit e.g. Desire S and One V. Removing the battery and charging directly using another device solved it both times. Got to be worth a go. There's guides on removing/replacing the HOX battery on XDA. Just gotta go carefully!

Hi there dude.
I just replaced the battery, and yeah. Even without the charger, the board went warm for about 45 seconds. Charging does nothing, even with the new battery.
So I am guessing its the board.
Ouch.
This isn't even mine. My mate had this collecting dust since it broke about a year ago and he asked me to see if i fixed it.
His dad wanted some pictures off it, so I guess they are out of the picture (pun not intended, but eh.)
Anyway, do I buy ANY board or is there a special board for this model number?
eBay brings a few up when searching "HTC One X".
Cheers guys for the replies
I had tried charging the battery using the external charger and after connecting it to the board, it became warm and after few hours, it subside. I checked the battery and the voltage is 3v, the minimum discharge voltage. So i can say that the board suck the power and change it solely to heat. Is your htc one x tegra or snapdragon version?

Possibly fried Nexus 7 2013

This is my older son's N7. A week ago he was playing some dumb game and it froze on him. He, intelligently, immediately restarted the N7 and continued to try to play. This happened about 7 times. The last time he said the screen glitched and it turned off. He then plugged it in and it got very hot according to him, for how long I don't know.
So now I took it apart. The battery was 3.4v-ish and not charging, so I hooked the usb up to it directly and charged up to 4.09v and tried. Still won't turn on (and yes I tried all combination of buttons and lengths). Plugged in the usb, tried again, no luck. But I did notice the qualcomm chip getting very hot very fast.
So what is the next step here? I cannot find a lot of information on this as 99.9% of the time someone just ran their battery completely dead and jumpstarted it back to life. I don't have access to proper reflow equipment so thats off but I'm not against a ghetto heatgun reflow. This thing is long out of warranty so I'm willing to try some invasive tricks on it.
Connect it to a PC and check if a new USB device, id 9008, has been registered. If so, the eMMC chip is gone - more info in the link in my signature. Then in the linked thread please post the maker of your eMMC chip for our statistics.
A bit more info...
I accidentally left the battery plugged in and it drained down to 0.2v , just by sitting there. Hoping it was a battery issue and to kill 2 birds with one stone I ordered a new battery which came in today, plopped it in and... nothing. I tested the battery and it had a charge but it just did the same thing again.
Nothing turns on. The qualcomm chip (or that area in general) heats up, I'm assuming its just sitting there eating the battery. Plugging it in doesn't help (tried 3 chargers, various amps) and it doesn't charge the battery. Last I checked after "charging" a few hours the battery was down to 3.3v , now it's just sitting there unplugged from the motherboard to prevent further damage.
And to answer your question "Connect it to a PC and check if a new USB device, id 9008...", watching "dmesg -w" in linux, not even a blip.
I don't want to keep buying random parts that don't fix the issue and my google-fu failed me in finding any real hardware level testing. So how do I find out what the problem is here?

What do you mean "so I hooked the usb up to it directly and charged up to 4.09v and tried" ? I once soldered a micro usb port directly to the motherboard for charging and in doing so inadvertently created a short between the id wire and a tiny component. Result: CPU heating up quickly and no sign of life. Eliminated it and it was back to normal. If you have done any soldering, check carefully for possible shorts. Some require a magnifying glass (mine was 10X) to be visible. I've not heard many cases of battery suddenly gone dead with this model.

usb wires connected directly to the battery itself, at no point was anything plugged into the motherboard. Also I have done no soldering to the mb so there is nothing to look for in that regards unfortunately.

Please disconnect everything from the motherboard except for the battery. If the chip still gets hot and the battery drains down then the mobo is faulty and you can replace it for around $25 http://www.ebay.com/itm/121637666631
I see no hope of component-level mobo repair because N7-13 has no available circuit diagram.
Finally got around to doing this. Everything disconnected, connected the battery and within about 10 seconds the qualcomm chip is too hot to touch. These chips run hot (or so I've read) so what are the odds it desoldered/fried itself?

[SOLVED][Hardware Issue] Phone not charging

JUMP TO SOLUTION
Hi everyone,
My phone (almost 2 years old, changed LCD for three times) started to lose a lot of its battery capacity from a month ago, and since yesterday I realized something's wrong with it, as it had some trouble charging the battery. At first, I was using my phone and its battery was around 20%, and then as soon as I connected the charger (genuine fast charge) it turned off and the red LED indicator kept turning on and off and refused to charge. then after a reboot, it started charging again, and then I left it charging at the night and at the morning I realized it only charged to 60% and the red LED didn't turn on at all. And now that all the battery is drowned out it's not charging at all and drawing no current from the charger ([email protected]).
Has anyone had any experience with it before? Is this a battery problem or the USB charging port flex cable which has some ICs on it (example)?
I'd appreciate your answers.
I can't tell from your story that you tried another charger ? I recall a similar charging issue from my HTC One X a few years back.
Replaced the charger and all issues disappeared.

Yes I have, Also seconds before it ran out completely I tried to check if adb works. connected it to my laptop and on the bootloader mode the adb recognized the device but the red LED didn't light up.

That's correct because a device doesn't charge in bootloader mode. Only off state, running OS or Dr TWRP recovery.
If you tried a different charger it can be pretty much only down to hardware, can't give any advice at that level.

I'm afraid not, only the custom one.
I had almost the same problem with my phone. I sent it to a repair center and acording to their report, the circuit which is responsible for the monitoring of the charging process had a loose connection. Maybe because I dropped the phone a few times. Unfortunatly the circuits of modern phones are all on the same circuit board, so they had to change the whole motherboard of the phone. But now everything works fine.
So I just opened the phone and disconnect/reconnected the battery connector and it eventually started charging with the stock charger, but it charged up to 60% and then stopped. retried the same steps and no luck this time. then I tried charging the battery with an external li-ion charger (I know it's a dangerous task )
this time it charged up to 4.11 volts and then I turned on the phone and again the battery dropped to 60%. so I believe the battery is really dead and needs replacement. I'll update you when I replace it.

Turns out I was wrong, my case was similar to yours. had to waste $9 on a battery to find out
it just fixed by disconnecting/reconnecting the USB connector bottom of the board, but I don't know how the flex cable for the back button got cut so now I have to replace the whole bottom circuit ($17 approx.) :crying:

So I went through the hurdle of replacing my battery and charge port, and the battery transplant went well, went from 70% to 100% battery health (yay!).
The first charge port I purchased (this is all eBay stuff) had a busted Recents button (copper trace in ribbon cable was nicked - when the part was removed from original phone for sure), so I complained and got a replacement; second one works well.
And because all bad things come in threes, the phone developed an echo (on the opposite side of the conversation) which I think I caused by ripping a bit of the mic rubber isolator which points towards the mic hole in the battery cover.
I believe I fixed it (still testing) by glueing some foam padding on the backside of the mic (on the charge port PCB, facing the battery cover).
Long story short, opening up the phone is a b###h, so do multiple repairs together, be careful not to break anything else (easier said....).
Good luck, let us know how it went.
So here's an update, First of all, I'm pretty happy with the battery replacement, It can hold like 10 hours of my usage while the old one could handle up to 6-8 lately, it's unbranded, and I got it from a local phone part store.
Second, the replacement for the charger flex turned out to be pretty good quality, and I've had no problems with it so far. I got it for $11 from AliExpress, but now it's about $10.5. But when I replaced everything and tried to reassemble the phone and tighten the screws it showed up with charging problems again, and I tried disassemble/reassembling the phone and reconnecting the charger flex, and the next time it charged but with no fast charge, so in the next try I also tried cleaning the flex connector with cleaning alcohol, and for the third try it finally started charging with no problems.
So now after like 2 weeks, it's had no problems so far.

ZUK Z2 battery and type C dead?

I've been using this amazing phone for 3 years. Now I'm having several problems. I think the battery is pretty much dead since the phone lasts a few seconds/minutes if not attached to a power bank or a charger. Another thing is that sometimes the phone goes crazy when I plug the cable, sometimes in fact when I plug the cable the phone reboots on its own and the battery showed is almost half of what it was showing before. Is the type C port dead too? I wanted to give the phone to a repair shop to replace the battery, but if the type C port has a problem too it may be useless to replace the battery. Anyone with the same problems?

Exactly the same issue since a few months now. Thought of patching it with a clean custom ROM, but looks like this is a battery issue. Any leads on a good battery replacement?
