How to convert external storage to internal storage on Fire TV 4K? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I see connecting USB via OTG to Firestick 4K doesn't allow it to be converted as internal storage unlike other Android devices.
Which is obviously every firestick owner must be looking for to expand the Internal storage.
A humble request to all the Android Developers here.. Could you please find a solution to this?
Thanks in advance

I was able to get it to work by following this tutorial, it allows you to have part of the USB as internet and another part external. Apps seem to run a little slower, but still work fine.
After formatting USB correctly I used the app2sd app
to move apps to adoptable storage, as the firestick doesn't have a migrate option built in.

Can you please provide a step by step guide ?
In apps2sd , when you select a app to move, it just takes you to the firestick --- settings --- manage apps section. There is no option there to move any apps to USB.
Can you link the app you used please ?
Sent you a PM as well.
Thanks[

In app2sd you click on link apps to SD card. Then click on the app you want to move. Then click the menu button in the top right corner, and click move to adoptable, or move to SD, I'm not sure which it was.

Apps2SD is working pretty well for me if I only use the file linking option, not Adoptable stoarage. My device has more room and feels faster than when using adoptable storage. I also don't like that it changes your default install location to external.
*On a rooted firestick 4k, flash this kernel to get f2fs access.
*Backup your files to a computer disk drive.
*Format your USB drive into 2 partitions: 1. Storage (fat32) 2. Extended (f2fs).
**I used Gparted while booted into the FireISO USB drive I made to unlock the bootloader and root the Firestick. You can also do it in Apps2SD but I had trouble with it.
**I made my first partiton 105Gb, and second 10Gb.
*Attach the USB drive to the Firestick and install Apps2SD apk. Open it and go into Settings. Change dev/block option to say "/dev/block/sda" without quotes.
*Back out of settings and go to the top optioin: Link Apps to SD. Then open the icon menu in the Left corner. Choose Recreate Mount Script. Say OK and Yes to all prompts. Wait until the script is successfully created. Reboot.
*Last link some apps to your SD card. I don't suggest system apps or anything that accesses system apps like Titanium Backup. For apps that slow down a lot (your browser), link everything EXCEPT the Data folders. This is often the largest folder, but the performance hit is not worth the space you save.
Hope this helps someone.

does Pretoriano80 kernel work with "Stick Mount" or do I need to remove this ?

2nd gen firestick
Does the app2sd work with a 2nd gen fire stick? Any info is appreciated. FYI I have a USB thumb drive not a sdcard. Will a sdcard work if using a sdcard on a USB sdcard reader?

Its likely it will show up in root explorer or root browser as ext. storage or sdcard something of that nature just a guess tho could even have factory label like scandsk

Yeah, I know it does, but I was hoping I could get it under settings too, to see how much of music, apps, etc are taking it up.
Or maybe a way I can even mount it as a SD card.
Ahh I see then I have no answer

[Q] Popcorn Time - Caching to external SD/Memory on AFTV

Hi!
Sorry if that's been asked before, my search yielded no results.
Because of the low memory on the AFTV, caching a movie (4gb+) is not possible.
When selecting cache folder as an external memory folder (mounted using Stickmount) to /sdcard/usbstorage/sd** I'm getting "Video File Too Big" error.
After alot of googling it should correspond with no writing permissions to this path (as long as the sd indeed have enough space - it does)...
Did anyone succeed to watch a movie on Popcorn Time on the Fire TV?
The card is NTFS.
Thanks!
I have been able to watch movies without any issues. My ext usb powered hd is fat32. You can also try with ext.
How to install Popcorn Time
So does popcorn time work perfectly on the fire tv? What are the steps to get it installed and working properly?
1- sideload popcorn time apk?
2- Does it need a mouse and keyboard or will the remote work?
3- Does it need external storage for the cache?
Thanks!

Are you using StickMount to mount the drive?
And did you change the path of the cache folder to it?
Thanks!

Sideload the android version.
Needs a mouse.
Caching depends on how much free space you got on the AFTV... you may use internal memory and SHOULD (read my post) be able to use External HD as well.

[Q] Only 299MB of 299MB external storage

Hello,
I have a 3 TB external drive (seagate) and the new update from Amazon that allows you to connect via USB . I formatted my drive to Fat32 using a 3rd party Program because windows 8.1 I guess only allows you to format in exFat but I need fat32 right? no matter what though EXfat or Fat32 I only have 299MB of 299MB its not seeing 3TB. does anyone know what I am doing wrong here? Also what can I do to move the app+data to my External HDD say for a games I download from Amazon. the whole point is to be able to move game data thats what the people want....well that and downloaded content. Anyway is there an app that moves data and app or just data without root?
Thanks,

You probably have a hidden partition on the drive. See here for more info: http://www.aftvnews.com/what-to-do-if-the-amazon-fire-tv-only-sees-197mb-of-a-usb-drive/

I did have one thank you! I ended up using a this link here witch tells you how to delete hidden partitions http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/72858.aspx but i would not have known without your help. after that I used this http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm to turn it into Fat32 but the Highest it does is 2TB witch it a lot honestly for fat32.
Now all I need to know is how to move my application data to an external drive to free up space without root???
I have a 2 TB external drive (slim) and the Fire TV formatted it by itself.

Shield TV 2017 16GB Non Pro no space left

Hi,
If I root it... would it be possible to move data (obbs) using app2sd (AppMgr Pro) ?
Now I can move app to adopted internal storage (usb key) but no data !! :crying:
Or is there any other option (run from external drive) to increase this stupid 16GB limited space ?
Need it for large files e.g. Doom BFG which's data takes more than 3GB in obbs/.
Does the disabling of Forced Encryption help and is it possible to perform on this device ?
THX for any tip
Adaptive Storage
16gb is a little small for such a good machine. I installed 2 USB (3.0) thumb drives on mine. One as adaptive and the other as removable. The adaptive drive (128gb) combines with the base 16GB for usable 114gb. The shield will install/move applications to the the thumb drive. Have you tried this?

Exactly did.
My adaptive drive is usb2.0 Kingston DataTraveller 16GB.
Adaptive internal storage was made and possibility to move App to Adaptive was used.
But..... data in /obb/ which does take almost 3GB were not moved only App.
So problem with low disk space is not solved at all.
Can not move it manually because adaptive storage is n/a (encrypted).
Probably not. Adoptive storage is combined with main storage. Not treated as 2 drives. Not being rooted, the device locks down moving this kind of data. I see apps installed on the USB part of adoptive storage, so nVidia does separate the 2 forms of internal storage for its own purposes. I see data in obb as being no different as moving apps to SD. Have you posted this on the Geforce forums?
https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/159/shield-tv/
Did you try enable developer options and enable force everything save to the USB? I do that for all my app and nothing save on Shield tv
Edit: the option name is "force allow app on external", at the bottom of developer options

If you did not migrate data to external drive right after you formatted it for adaptive storage you should see an option to migrate the data...
I did migrate the data after format.
Now I got new App installed so its new data has be be moved again.
As I see well - this is possible only if you got root rights.

If you migrate to USB then the data should install on USB directly
I notice that you are using a usb2.0 drive, will it be that problem? As I remember if the drive too slow then it may refuse to work. Dunno if this related to your case
usb2.0 is no problem. Apps moved to usb storage works without visible delay.
the main problem is - user is not allowed to use his own usb adopted storage ? we need to use this adopted storage space for any storage. this is very stupid limitation from Ggle sorry

I have noticed that sometimes not all data is moved. So I migrate data to adaptive drive, reboot, migrate data back to internal drive, reboot and then migrate data back to adaptive drive which seemed to move all data like the large data files for Grand Theft Auto

Cant recall off the top of my head but if you go into Storage & Reset you should see option to migrate data when you check the storage used for each drive.
Even if I clicked on Move Data to Adopted storage and next reboot my ShieldTV 2017.... free space remains the same.
Need to move data from /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/xxx (and not /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/).
Is this "OBB" not possible to move to adopted storage ??

Found answer on internet. OBB is not moved !! Only Apps and Data.
So if your App does use OBB you are not able to move it to adopted storage (obb can take some GBs so you may soon be out of space even if you got adopted storage) .
Solution is to ROOT and use MountFolder which can move your OBB to e.g. SDcard and then point to it. Another reason why you are "forced" to root your devices.

You don't need to install any module to be abke to access fat32 formatted device, hell you don't need to have root at all. Fat32 is recognized by the system as is.
You just need a working OTG cable and use MiXplorer (download it from XDA official page). You will see your thumb drive in the hamburger menu (first or second one).
I have non rooted firestick 4k and it works.
I have no experience with fos5 devices and i cannot say anything about that because most NORMAL commands don't work there

NTFS and ExFAT file systems are developed by Microsoft.
Amazon is not paying to Microsoft for the license to use NTFS and ExFAT.
The maximum file size for NTFS and ExFAT are 16EB (exabytes) or 16 million GB (gigabytes).

Hey my device is the way I want it now sween wolf, rooted with all apps installed, I can't be assed unrooting it now.
but anyway I flashed the magisk module with the general thought being if I was using a pre-rooted rom I would lose the ability to use the USB drive through OTG?
So I flashed Pretorians module but I can't get the USB drive to show up, it's a sabrent 32 gb formated to fat32
I'm using a similar app to xplore called filemanager plus but with no joy... The USB storage just isn't playing ball and showing up you know?
So I don't need the module at all? , should I perhaps try reformatting the USB?

I am not telling you to unroot, this is not something rooting a device kills, but yeah with or without root, usb works.
Try changing your explorer, use mix or es file explorer to see if the usb is getting recognized but isn't showing up
My english is not perfect so i still not try this before i will be sure.
What is easiest way to enable ntfs or exfat usb drives?

It absolutely is. The maximum file size for FAT32 is 4GB. What you linked to is exFAT, which is NOT FAT32. exFAT also cannot be read by the firestick.
