The S-Pen can be used as a stylus, tapping much more accurately on the screen than you could with your finger, but it also functions as so much more. The technology used in the S-Pen is Wacom's. Wacom is a well known company that makes drawing pads, used by artists to draw on a computer. You can read more about the technology here:

The Menu and Back buttons on the bottom of the device are capacitive. As the S-Pen is not capacitive, you cannot press them with it. See below under 'Device wide functionality' for a way of using back and menu anyway without just tapping them with your fingers.
While the S-Pen is detected as pointing at or touching the screen the capacitive sensor and buttons will not be functional. This is to prevent you from accidentally pressing something while resting your hand on the device and using the S-Pen, but it isn't very reliable if you don't keep the pen very close to the screen at all times.
The S-Pen can now be used by developers! Which means that non-samsung apps are starting to pop up which make use of the full functionality of the S-Pen. Right now only a few drawing applications have chosen to support it, but hopefully more will in the future. To find more S-Pen enabled apps open the Samsung App Store and select S-Pen Apps.
As it uses wacom technology, the S-Pen can be replaced/supplemented with any wacom pen. Pens with two buttons where one normally functions as an eraser can also be used! Remember to enable S-Pen detection when the pen is inside the device, or just remove the S-Pen for the wacom pen to be detected.
The S-Pen is pressure sensitive. In some applications where you can draw you can press gently for a slimmer line, or harder for a thicker one.
Configuration:

You can configure Popup Note to open when you remove the pen. Go to Settings->S-Pen. Other useful configuration options exist here, so take the time to browse them. Checking the battery saving option is critical and has no downsides.
The S-Pen Keeper option purports to sound and alert when you walk away from the device without the s-pen. The device has three things to work with to implement this functionality: Being able to detect when the pen is in the device, detecting when the pen is pointed at or touching the screen, and the accelerometer. When the pen is not in or pointing at the device and the accelerometer has "shaken" enough the notification will sound. If you don't shake much when you walk, it will take it a -long- time to sound.
Under Settings-Lock screen, you can select if you want to be able to use Popup Note on the lock screen. Decheck this for a slightly faster screen turn on rate if you don't use it.
Air View:

When enabled in Settings->S-Pen "Air View" tracks the s-pen as it hovers up to half and inch over the screen.
When hovering over an area where simply hovering will not take an action the cursor is an empty circle. In areas where it will take an action the cursor changes. Other cursors include a filled circle and arrows, for example.
In most stock applications you can hover over a button to view its function.
Hover near the edge of the screen (top, bottom, left, right) in almost any application (even non-stock) where you can scroll and the screen will scroll in the desired direction.
In many applications the hovering cursor is viewed as a mouse cursor would be. This can be used to play flash games where the cursor location is important. It can also be used to display drop down menus on websites.
Stock applications like Gallery and Video Player have additional air view functionality. Hover over a gallery folder to preview pictures inside it. Hover over the video timeline while playing a video in Video Player to preview the video at that point.
Text which is cut off due to being too long can often be viewed by hovering over it. This is very useful in notifications and the My Files browser.
Device wide functionality:

Some functions of the S-Pen can be used almost anywhere on the device - even in games! Most of the functionality requires you to press the button found near the bottom of the pen and draw on the screen (while touching, not hovering).
Press and hold the button and draw around any area of the screen, such that the ending point touches or comes near the starting point. A screenshot of the encircled area will be taken and displayed on the screen. Tap an icon on the bottom of the screen to send the screenshot to your desired program. It will be saved the the sdcard/Pictures/Screenshot directory and copied to the clipboard as well. If you touch no icon, it will still be saved and copied. Quickly hit the 'X' near the preview of the screenshot to discard it.
Press and hold the button, then touch anywhere on the device and hold still to take a fullscreen screenshot. The screenshot will then be displayed in an editor. You can draw and write on the screenshot using the S-Pen. See the options at the top of the screen to switch drawing and text options. Click the checkmark to save the screenshot, or the 'X' to discard it. Screenshots will be placed in the /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots directory if left untouched, or the /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots/IMG_edited directory if you draw on or otherwise change them.
Any text that can be selected, even in most programs that do not support the S-Pen, can be selected by holding down the button and then drawing a line over it. The normal text selection brackets will then appear and can be used to refine your selection.
Press and hold the button, then quickly tap twice anywhere on the screen to bring up S-Memo. You can then write anything you wish without closing the running program.
Press and hold the button, then draw a straight vertical line from near the bottom of the screen to near the top. This will open Quick Command. More information on Quick Command can be found below.
Press and hold the button, then draw one of the predefined symbols below anywhere on the screen to activate the corresponding function.
Back: An arrow (with no tail) pointing to the left.
Menu: An arrow (with no tail) pointing up.
Undo: (Where applicable) Draw a line from right to left.

The Samsung Keyboard:

If you select the Samsung Keyboard in Settings->Language and Input you can use the S-Pen for handwriting recognition input anywhere you can use the keyboard. To activate handwriting recognition, press and hold the microphone icon on the keyboard:
Then select the 'T' text input icon:
Write in the center box that appears. The system will turn your input into text with a slight delay. It is quite accurate and can even interpret cursive - if your cursive is very clean and proper.
While in the keyboard, draw a line from left to right to put in a space. Draw a line from right to left to press backspace (you can also just tap the backspace icon on the top).
Tap the 'A' icon at the top to change the keyboard to numeric input mode, which is more accurate at recognizing numbers and equations.
Tap the '123 Sym' icon to bring up a quick, tappable menu of numbers and symbols.
Press and hold the microphone icon, then select the keyboard icon to return to the normal keyboard.
Quick Command:

Quick command can be used anywhere on the device to take a predefined action or execute a macro. Access quick command by pressing the S-Pen button and drawing a line from the bottom to the top of the device. Any length of vertical line should work, it doesn't need to be precise.
Once the Quick Command screen pops up, you can draw one of the predefined icons followed by text, or define your own macros. To define your own macro, press the settings button in the upper right of the Quick Command screen, then add a command. You can open an application or select functions. In functions, you can set more than one action. "Mute and enable bluetooth" for example. Once selected, you can draw or select one or more characters and symbols to activate the action, and then use those symbols in Quick Command!
S-Note:

S-Note is one of the applications always pinned to the bottom icons in the Touchwiz Launcher. It is the showcase app for the S-Pen.
If you take partial screenshots with the S-Pen and send them to S-Note, they will appear in the Scrapbook.
To create a new Note, use the '+' icon. You don't have to be in a folder.
Once in a note you can write and draw as you wish. Hover over icons to see their functionality, or press and hold them to bring up more options. The third icon on the top row allows you to switch between drawing, formula match and text input modes.
While in drawing mode and not touching the screen press and release the S-Pen button to switch between eraser and draw modes.
Tap the image icon for a menu allowing you to insert pictures, video, etc. This menu can be scrolled down for more options, if in landscape mode. One cool option is 'Idea Sketch'. After selecting it you can write the name of something you want a quick image of, and the device will search for it.
Tap the red circle icon to begin (and then stop) recording your drawings as a video. To playback these recordings close and save your note, open it and press the 'Play' button.
A full, useful tutorial on S-Note can be found by pressing the menu key, scrolling down in the menu and pressing Tutorial.
I'm sure I've only scratched the surface of what is available when using the S-Pen. If you have any new tips or tricks, or want to write up a section on another app that uses the S-Pen, make a post and I'll add it to the reference! I also plan on making an S-Pen quick reference screen in the future, if there is any interest.

Basically what you see above is what I'm trying to get rid of, to allow software like Papyrus to use the S-Pen's button for gestures. I've tried to play around with things as much as I'm comfortable with *nix systems, but I can't find how Samsung implemented this feature. And is this something that can be removed from the ROM itself? I don't know where to start.

If you're just asking about the wheel that pops up you can turn that off by going to: settings - controls - spen; Then under the header "Air View" is the option to turn off "Air Command", which is the function that brings up that wheel when you are hovering and click the button.
Withut root I don't know about turning off the s pen actions for the lasso screen shot (holding button while circling an area), or full screen shot (holding butting an tapping screen). But, if you were rooted, then the app GMD spen control allows you to "overtake" samsungs gestures to use the apps predefined spen gestures or to use custom defined gestures (only for when the pen is touching the screen and button is pressed, not for hover gestures).

Cool. Thank you! GMD is a great workaround. I appreciate it.
I am still open to learning how to do away with the lasso screenshot feature altogether, at the ROM level.

I finally rooted the device on stock firmware and installed GMD sPen Control. It doesn't allow Papyrus to use the sPen buttons however. It does disable the screenshot feature and enables other sPen gestures, but that's not quite what I'm after.

The below may be helpful to you regarding each of the tabs/pages in GMD spen (especially User gestures):
1 ) -Gestures - Pre defined gestures with the app that you can turn on or off, as well as disabling samsungs gestures. (I personally turn off most of these so I have more gestures available as custom gestures.
A helpful gesture to keep is when holding the button and swiping down from the top of the screen, which will pause gmd gestures (not take their input) and activate samsungs gestures again. So if you want to do a lasso screen shot just by holding the button and circling, first pause the gestures, then do that, then unpause.
2) -User Gestures - Create your own gestures. Heres an example that may help you: Select "+ Path". --> In the field for Gesture Path write "T-T" --> For action select Action then Samsung Note Actions then Air Command --> For starting zone select bottom half of screen. Save it. Then repeat this but for action go through the same menu and pick Action Memo, and for starting zone select top half of screen.
Now whenever you double tap with the button in the top half - Action Note pops up, in the bottom half, the air command wheel pops up.
Obviously you can do this however you want, this was just an example.
3) -Launchpad - Just a menu of pre selected (by you) apps/shortcuts you can bring up with a gesture.
4) Blacklist - Select apps that when they are opened up and active GMD spen will pause your gesture commands (not take them as inputs), but I think this will then activate samsungs gestures inside that app.

I appreciate it very much. I went through these options and test blacklisting an app as well. Unfortunately Papyrus still doesn't "see" the gestures. GMD does, and when paused, Samsung screenshot feature does.
I also read up on the rest of the app documentation and can't seem to find a viable way to do this. I did message the app creator for clarification, hopefully I'll get a reply.

If you are talking about air gestures, you did go into the tablets settings and turn off air command correct?
If you are talking about gestures while touching the screen, then you should just be able to disable any of the built in GMD gestures that are creating the conflict. If they are still things you'd like to be able to do, then just assign different gestures that dont conflict.
I use hover commands in Lecture Notes without any issue.

I am not talking about any gestures per say, just free usage of the spen inside third party apps such as papyrus. I did disable air command, although it has nothing to do with it.
Basically I was expecting that once I disable the Samsung gestures it would somehow disable the service that Samsung runs that gets in between the spend button usage and the application. But that layer is not disabled, it's just it's actions that are prevented from running by GMD.

Wondering if there is option to turn on the double tap to dim screen and triple tap on the button for max brightness in aw2?
Just updated but it seems like the funtion is not there by default. It's one of the more useful shortcut I constantly use with aw1.5.

Yeah, they removed all the essential functionality I was using frequently. Good job.

I agree it was a mistake to remove this feature. Google specifically made AW 2.0 for the LG Watch Sport though and said forget everyone else without an ambient light sensor. The Bubble Launcher dev recently found a way to add the shortcut back, but it breaks the Assistant shortcut in the process.

What is SideSqueeze+?
SideSqueeze+ is an app that brings extended functionality to your unrooted (or rooted) Galaxy device, helping you to do more. It is only compatible with some Samsung Galaxy devices from 2017 onwards.
Your privacy is valued. This app does not contain ads or employ trackers, nor does it collect or harvest your data in any way.
It does not have the ability to access the internet, regardless of whether or not special permissions are enabled, as can be verified in the app's manifest file.​
SideSqueeze has grown beyond just squeezing & pressing and has become SideSqueeze+. A core feature is still detecting both squeeze and press gestures via the analysis of barometric sensor pressure data, but SideSqueeze+ now does much more by means of the "Plus" module. Additional functionality so far includes: fingerprint unlock vibration (for both front and back fingerprint scanners), face/iris unlock vibration, customizable fingerprint unlock actions (start the camera when you unlock with a certain finger, etc), navigation gesture vibration (satisfying haptic feedback when using navigation gestures), slice gestures (chop the edge of your hand against the screen and slice up/down to do things), double chop gestures (similar, but instead of slicing down, just lift your hand), status bar flick gestures (flick down very quickly on the status bar to do something), lockscreen tap gestures (triple tap on an empty spot of the lockscreen to do something), automatic biometric lockout (secure lock your device with as little as 1 failed attempt), power button long-press, various volume button combinations, S Pen button press remap, S Pen button double-press remap, S Pen button long-press, S Pen Note10 global air override (wave your pen at any time to perform home/back/recents/etc), S Pen inserted, S Pen removed, and miscellaneous (which consists of: 1.) accidental touch protection options, 2.) option to not turn the screen on after unplugging the cable/removing from wireless charging, 3.) option to open an app when the Buds case is opened).
Tip: If you are not interested in squeezing/pressing and would like to use this app just for the Plus module features listed above, simply switch off both squeeze and press detection. This will completely suspend the analysis engine, and leave the Plus module functionality intact.
IMPORTANT! For the Plus module to work (as well as certain actions such as: immersive status/nav toggles, rotation toggle), a command has to be run from a computer via Android Developer Bridge (adb). Instructions can be found from within the app on the Help tab. This step only needs to be performed once.​

Disable biometric methods after only 1 failed attempt, or if a certain finger was used
Double squeeze to start a voice assistant
Triple-tap the lockscreen to turn the screen off

Triple squeeze to perform a Tasker task
Start your music app when Buds case is opened
Use the S Pen to control most streaming services
Bring back force pressing your screen to go home (while screen on)
Make power button long-press start the camera
Vibrate when you unlock your device with a fingerprint, or face
Choose a finger that will automatically do something after unlocking via that finger, like immediately starting the camera or automatically disabling all biometrics when a certain finger is used
Remap S Pen button press, double-press, and long-press
Play a custom sound when S Pen removed/inserted
Use S Pen air actions anywhere, and assign them anything: wave down to go home, wave up for recents, or anything you want
Press both volume buttons together to do something
Press volume up and power to do something
Press volume down and power to do something while the screen is off
Control the camera with your thumb: Volume roll down-to-up to start the camera, press volume down to take a picture, then volume roll up-to-down to close the camera

No, you do not need to be rooted (come to think of it, I should declare that on the app store page so people know). Are you running Android 10? I haven't had any problems with that command on mine, but I'm still on Pie.

I've bought pro version and every function works apart from s pen air scroll gestures on note 10 plus 5g one ui 2. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Tried it out but it doesn't work right for me on Android 10. It went crazy and would either work only with light squeezes then hard squeezes then neither and then randomly. Couldn't figure it out so uninstalled.

I have explored the function of the app almost. I have already answered my question in the email and app store, but I have never heard back from you. Here are a few personal opinions.
1. My sidequeeze cannot run tasker tasks
2. I hope that the gestures in the air can be defined in different software.
3. My call answering test is unresponsive
4. I hope to have a cloud mouse function, similar to the "smouse" software in the app store. I hope that the software can be awakened by one button and closed by one button. Click, long press, scroll up and down, and slide left and right

Hi,
None of the functions worked on my Note10. I did the special permission granting but the S Pen override was't working. I didn't planned to use the squeeze part but wanted to try it, but also no sucess setting up correctly.
What could cause the spen non functioning behavour?

Question Remapping Side Buttons?

What's the best method people are using to remap what the aide buttons do? I would do this on my S21, to do things when I held the power button or volume buttons. Is it possible here?

Button mapper can do that. I have flashlight on volume down longpress, and authenticator for long press volume up.
