Question: Is it possible to use the Shield TV without a Google Account? - Shield Android TV General

Is it possible to use the Shield TV without a Google Account?
Does somebody know a way?
Maybe with a custom firmware?

I want to know that too. I had a foster device but I find not an clearly answer yet. do you?
EDIT:
Perhaps this could help us.
EDIT2:
surprisingly I found a key-kombo to get an special menu. You just need to put ↑ ↑ ← ← on the remote. Then you can choose to skip-login. Now we need to know more.

dunno y u wouldnt want goog signed in.. i suppose if u get thrugh setup then can ust adb sideload stuff

Instead of sideloading stuff you can use Aurora store to get all the updates you need and more.
Just once you need to sideload the store: AuroraStore_3.1.5.apk
Source

So it is possible to use the device without a google account then?
I even went a step further and rooted my stock OS shield and deleted all the bloatware that came with it. Then installed only jellyfin (alternative to plex) to stream from my home NAS + put the device on its own VLAN without internet access.
Even this process requires a google account to setup.. WOuld be nice if I could just remove that google requirement if Im not even planning to use it on the internet

See my EDIT2 here. Just use the key-combo.
Without google means in this case that you never connect your device with google.

Sorry, forget to mention that you need the shield dev rom.
Perhaps with non-dev and magisk root it could be possible to Flash an apk from the dev Rom but atm it is just possible to skip the Google login with the official nvidia dev-rom.
Greetings by Idijt

I find it if you first set it up with account you just go in and delete the account and turn off auto login.
I have both versions dev and retail both work the same as for deleting the account and turning off the auto login.
Make sure you turn developer tool on though

I dont know about newer firmware versions, but i remember going through the initial setup and skipping everything that gave that option until the create google account screen, where i couldn't go any further, i simply pulled the power plug, put it back in , and i was able to skip the google account creation.
Obviously i dont recommend folks pulling the power cord while system is runing on a regularly basis, didn't seem to be any ill affects, but i would suggest that you have nothing hooked up to the shield like harddrives and such just incase.
I cant remember for sure, but i think there is a way to force a reboot through a connected keyboard and key combination (search engine) while system is running which is a more elegant solution if possible

my shield 2019 pro got an ota today.. i backed it up and can upload it if anyones interested.. seemed to have quite a bit of fixes for audio and some issues on vizio tvs etc

Yes, this is an option but you need to create an Google account. Yes, you can delete this after the setup but you probably keep it. I dont want to create an account and I dont want to share my informations with google. This should be the last possible fix for this.

ByTheWay:
I uninstall a lot of google services/apps. I will do a
Code:
adb shell pm list packages -f
for you, later this day with my google packages where still left on my device.

Yes I know you do not want to share neither do I . I just made a bogus account and never use it that is all
I use a custom Hal launcher on them because I could never get Nova launcher to work correctly
Both of mine ever since I got them Both are Model P2897 and have 8.0.0 security patch DEC 2018, kernel 4.9.109-tegra-g4fa2f5b [email protected] #1, Sun mar 3 15:08:57 PST 2019. , Build OPR6.170623.010.3507953_1441.7411, Shield SW Version 7.2.3(30.6.131.70)

@zxhwk what kind of modification does it have? The HAL Launcher.

This does not work. I tried a lot to skip the google-login with non-dev rom without success.
Option A:
flash the current dev rom and to the mentioned key-combo to skip the login
Option B:
just type in a fake or real google login and login. Then disable the account.

Yes it can only be skipped on dev firmware. twhen I guess I would say that the "SetupWraithPrebuild.apk" checked the some system files, perhaps the build.prop and if you not running the a dev-rom you can not skip-google login with the key-kombo.
But some good news are that Steel01 released an experimental LOS16 (pie) rom.

thanks for the participation, i thought i was really the only one who didn't wanna login with a gmail account since it took some months for your replies.
i created a new throaway gmail account in the meantime, but it was not easy because google requires a sms verification in my country. i had to use one of these sms websites for that.
nearly all televisions and branded boxes with the android tv os let you skip the google account login during the initial setup.
since nvidia does support this product quite well with constant software updates, they'll probably consider to implement this feature in an upcoming firmware update if we are vocal enough on their official forums and request the 'skip login' frequently?

@uigger @I_did_it_just_tmrrow
How did you guys create throw-away google accounts.. I could never get any of those SMS verification services to work.. I think I tried like 20 different numbers there. All are used already..
I would also love to try lineageOS on the shield but project seems to not update at all since many months and also dev is not answering in forum anymore.
You think it still works good on 2019 shield Pro ? Is it safe to try it and easily revert to default if not.. ?

Cyanogen rom & encryption

Hiya,
My phone is a work phone and I've rooted it and installed Cyanogen rom on it, however encryption doesn't work as part of that rom. For me to be able to use the phone as a work device I need to encrypt it. If I tell it to encrypt the phone it never seems to do anything, I get the green android appear and that's it I have left it overnight before and it never seems to complete or give me any kind of progress bar. Any ideas how I can fix this please ?

if you want to know something then ask in the rom thread....but where do you tried to encypt it? in the settings or where? and which encrypt do you mean? it should work nicely
I'm assuming here you are trying to add an account as either Exchange or a Google Apps domain controlled by your employer and thus you are getting the security pop-ups telling you to add a PIN and encrypt the storage. What you'll find that really sucks is that once encrypted you can't flash updates to CM through the recovery anymore.
Try this app: Enhanced Email $9.99.
It will let you sync without needing to enable all of the security features on your device. I highly recommend you stick with a PIN code though!
Sorry for the self-advertisement: but encryption does work in my 4.2 AOSP ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013506
Note that you should switch to the 'bigdata' layout in order to avoid any data leakage by an unencrypted sdcard.

Yes that's exactly It, Our work email is on Google now so its the Google apps problem. I don't mind if I cant flash updates as I haven't found any problems with the latest nightlies for a long time. I may try that if there is no other solutions dont really wanna spend my own money getting my work email working .

[Q] Imaging an S4 mini for deployment

Howdy,
Looking for some feedback on tools after rooting for doing a complete image of the phone. I need to setup about 14 phones and would like to get one set then image the rest. The only concern I have is the google account on each phone, I'll have to remove the one contained in the image and apply the new one, does anyone know if that will cause issues with the installed apps? I get that if they are google account based apps those apps would need to go through setup again.
Thanks,
~DC

Is deploying the app your only target? Or you want some of the system settings to be deployed as well?
If the apps are already installed and I'm taking what you're saying is you're going to basically copy and paste for my lack of more technical terms, from one phone to a few others right? Well if so the apps will not pass the installation of any updates at least for paid apps. Any apps you'd like to be system apps just drop in system/apps.

I want to create a base image to deploy to all the phones. The base image will not contain any paid apps, mostly google services with a few utilities for tracking bandwidth and others for locking down features. After deploying the image to all the phones I would changes each google account to for the user that will get the phone. Once each user's phone is setup I will create an image for each user for restoring.
I was concerned I would not be able to remove the initial google account, I believe this was something locked in earlier versions of android but not an issue now. Phones are in today so I'll be testing everything. I have to document the process so I'll post a guide.
Thanks!
~DC
Sounds awesome. I'd compile something for you from source but knox is fluffing crazy. Your Google account can be transferred from the main account to another if you shall succeed by making the second one you attached to the device the primary. But you I don't think can remove the main account unless you fully wipe the device but after you swap the primary account in settings you can then delete your original. Please do share the guide I'm sure it'll come in handy.

Question. Is there any way this can be flashed via Recovery and a zip file? Will TWRP or CWM work on the Nexus Player? Thanks!

With the new TWRP recovery you can install also system.img. But to install TWRP recovery you need also fastboot. At this point, when you install TWRP recovery, you can install also system.img and boot.img.
However you can do all that you want in many way. The link for TWRP recovery is in the first post.

KICKASS dude!! Awesome work!!
I will be trying this out right after work and will report back!
This is just great, Zulu, thank you so much for sharing this project with us, there's just no way of going back to Android TV after you try this rom. Are all the functions to use an external storage with apps enabled? No need to flash modified kernel to acquire root as we had to do with lollipop? Thanks again, mate,

All ok and selinux is also enabled. so google can't break the balls saying that we are not secure. Also if i think that the real security in android is only with root, because without root permissions, you don't have sufficient permissions to manage and clean up your own system.
For me, selinux enabled is good only because some crap apps can check this to not work. When you hide the root, you are on pure and simple AOSP, so no problems for everyone.
I tested many things, but please test and let me know what we can add or correct. I use it as daily rom from some days.

Thanks, man, surely will do! In your personal opinion, is this one falling behind your build of LP in any aspects, or it's just as good? I'm flashing it right now, will report this afternoon already about any eventual issues! Thanks once again
EDIT: Tried formatting two USB drives as "internal storage", one of 32 GB and one of 8 GB. The 32 GB one keeps failing over and over, giving me a java related error (timeout).
The 8GB one formatted and worked fine.
The Dish Network Anywhere app won't run. It attempts to open and crashes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any ideas anyone? Other than that this is fantastic so far. Thank you @zulu99 !!
Can i preinstall apps on windows or would i have to unpack and repack in linux? to clarify I'm looking for a way to install same apps on multiple devices without doing one by one, as of now I have a folder in Es file explorer (android TV apps) and transfer via LAN then install one by one.
Anyone know easier way?
Thoughts helium backup, twrp backup first device and restore from backup on other devices.

But seem that all work well also if is the first public build ( not the first build in my office ).
However not problem, if someone find things that i can correct, i'm happy to help.

Yup with or without root it crashes. I also extracted from nexus 9 on 6.0 and crashed as well. I might try some more ideas later but as for now I have 6 devices to flash.
Works fine on nexus 6 6.0.
Don't forget that this firmware is android 6. So to say if an app works or not work, compare with the stock firmware. some apps are not ready for android 6.
But 85% yes.

AOSP Full Android 6 Marshmallow on Nexus Player.Full Android 6 v.1.0
Android in TV is not just movies and songs but also millions of apps and games.
Full Android firmware want be full Android Experience with NO Limits.
With Android you can run all standard Google Play apps and also apps made specifically for Android TV.
For the best interaction with Android from your couch i suggest DroidMote, because with it multi-touch is not a problem.
What's inside ?
Kernel:
NTFS, NFS/CIFS/F2FS Filesystem support
USB Webcam support & USB Audio
ExFat support
Firmware:
Full AOSP firmware with standard Android Launchers. Android 6 MRA58K
Compatibility with many more apps with the classic Google Play Store ( .... Google Plus, Youtube, Chrome, Gmail, Hangout, Skype, Maps etc. etc. )
MTP + ADB (transfer file from NP to PC via usb cable like your tablet/phone)
Unlocked fixed Volume (now you can use any remote to UP/DOWN/MUTE volume)
Bluetooth a2dp external headsets and speakers support
UVC Webcam video HAL
(tested with Logitech C525 for video call in Hangout and Spype)
Arm translation to be compatibile with arm-only apps. Like Netflix and Skype
Support external microphone from usb webcam.
(tested with Logitech C525 for voice call in hangout and skype, voice search in google now, sound recording )
Chromecast functionality
What not working and i'm working on ?
Google camera app can crash. The HAL for the usb webcam is experimental but you can do all, videocall, take photo and record videos with the appropiate app.
Installation:
Download the firmware from this link: https://goo.gl/7Xy1qL
Put the device in bootloader mode:
1) fastboot flash boot boot.img
2) fastboot flash system system.img
3) fastboot -w
To root you can download the last SuperSu beta and install with TWRP recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-touch-recovery-t3114717
To restore the original firmware you can use the Factory Images "fugu" for Nexus Player https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Note:
The remote that came with the Nexus Player will pair and work with this ROM, however it is not sufficient so please refrain from asking questions in this thread about it. I recommend using DroidMote or an hardware keyboard/mouse for realistic functionality. Only directional keys are not sufficient for a full version of Android. I love Android in TV and i use it from 3 years with many Android Tv Box. I made this firmware for my personal use, because i like Android with standard apps UI, that are more accessible, updated and fast. I like a customizable launcher, but specially i don't like imposed limitations made just to protect economic interests of few.

Need Help - Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 SM-T817V Knox

I have this tablet which is being restricted to use due to Knox. It appears to be for some vendor. It takes over the device even though it's not connected to the internet and doesn't allow me to do anything with it. I have read all the threads I can find and tried every possible option through Odin to install new firmware.
I understand this model is a giant pain due to Verizon and I may not be able to root this for customization. But is there not a way to get a factory clean firmware on here that doesn't have this Knox vendor customization? If not, is this good for anything or just throw it in the trash?

Thank you for the response. This is still very much an active question for me.
I'm able to create the user account, install and start the install for the mentioned apk. However, it stops at 90%, and I get this error "Root Failed" Error Code 0x166508. It recommends I use the PC version, but USB Debugging is disabled in main account and I can't even access Developer tools for this new account.
Additionally, I'm unable to use the Home button. I get the following message "Security policy prevents use of Home key"
Seems like no matter what is suggested, there is something new that is blocking this from being used.

Google assistant is part of LinageOS..??!!

Hi all..
I have been using LinageOS for quite a while now, I love it and applaud those that have worked so hard to make such a wonderful OS.
But the main reason for using it is so I can avoid google. I have just installed Linage-18.1-20211113-nightly-beryllium-signed (I did not use the GAPPS package) and when I checked the installed apps/system, there is 2 google assistant apps.
I also rooted my mobile before installing Linage using magisk-v23-0 and disable-force-encryption=-treble, this was done through TWRP 3.3.0.0 beryllium. I mention these in case there is a possibility of these google apps coming from there, but have searched on the net and can find no evidence of this..
Anyone know anything about this? If Linage is now including google apps I am going to have to find another OS, and I really do not want to..!
Cant seem to get these google assistant apps off my phone (POCO f1). Tried every wipe I could do in TWRP, tried a port of CalyxOS, nothing will shift them.. Even when I 'force halt' they just switch themselves on again in a few minutes..
Going to try going back through the LinageOS versions and see if there is one that doesnt have them.
Nobody have an idea of how to get rid of these?
It's definitely weird, very weird (and hard to believe, if I may say so).
Using LOS ever since and never ever had such thing happening. Sometimes even putting gapps on it to try something with GSF...
Did you do a proper re-install from the scratch, just like by the book?

Other than that, perhaps try asking in

Hi SigmundDroid (cool handle)
Have now tried E Foundation too, every wipe I could do in TRWP, nothing will shift them, they activate a few minutes after I 'force stop' them..
Am now trying to find a way of doing a full format of the partitions as these files are like viruses..
E Foundation forum folk are also a bit startled by this, think they would like to know how to remove the files as part of the install procedure, me too..!!
Just found this;
https://pastebin.com/bf9Hh4RH
3rd and 4th line down.
When I look at the google assistant apps, the first one shows at the bottom of the screen under ‘advanced’;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.okgoogle
The second one shows;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.xgoogle
Not 100% sure how to use those lines, but they look to be adb commands… Any idea anyone?

Of possible relevance is that it's what does the transfer of accounts and settings from your old phone in newer Android versions. I don't plan on using Google Assistant generally, but it was very handy that the Lineage setup hooked into it for transferring accounts and stuff from my "old" phone.
Ah, the plot thickens..
I do get that some folk are ok with google, but not me.. Would still very much like to get rid of them. Also, those that are making google-free roms would no doubt want them gone too, can hardly be google-free with those hiding deep in the moby..
Did you clear the system partition? Some ROM install packages run an addon.d script to retain Gapps and other stuff. Of course LineageOS does not contain any Google stuff, only AOSP. So there is just another logical explanation for this. If you want to be sure, look in the LineageOS image yourself.
Apologies.. Looks like I had not made it clear, I do not now think Linage, or Calyx or E-foundation have google assistant in them.. They seem to be remnants on the phone, probably from the original rom.
But they will not easily be removed and so remain regardless of which custom rom subsequently ends up on the phone.
Am hoping someone way smarter than me can work out how to get rid of them, also hoping it will help others achieve the same..

Hmm, there is not much of an explanation what it does - looks like uninstalling a lot of bloatware.

I concur with @Quigley and we shall find it.

Which ones? (you can do screenshots in TWRP with power + vol down)
I guess we can assume you did the mandatory
Now tap Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset and continue with the formatting process

One other thing: it can also be the product partition. Gapps are normally included in the product image in the original firmware. Did you wipe that one as well?
Its still in LOS 19.1 , despite years of complaints. Starting to look like they keep it in there on purpose, no option to uninstall, disable is greyed out..... SKETCH!
Same for Lineage 20 on my OnePlus 7T Pro. "google free" system ...
Is there an explanation somewhere why the apps are permanently and indelibly integrated? Why is there almost nothing about this on the net?
The .apks are 100% in the lineage images. You can verifiy this by yourself, if you want.
They are located in the product.img under priv-app.
