Anybody upgraded from v30? - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Hi forum,
I am wondering if v30 to G8s is a worthy upgrade. I would really miss the DAC, but hope for better camera performance and faster updates once Android 10 is out.
Has anybody made the jump?
Cheers, Alex

Get a V40 if you are looking for a less expensive upgrade and want to keep the quad dac.

Interesting thought that did not occur to me yet, thanks! Funnily, the V40 is bit more expensive in my part of Europe than the G8s and I am not sure it will get Android 10 (which would be important to me, project mainline). But I need to read some camera reviews to see how to v40 compares to v30 and G8s

https://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-re...-G7-ThinQ-have-not-made-the-cut.440657.0.html
So it should get it next year, which isn't that far away.
Sent from my LM-G820 using Tapatalk

I did. G8 has the same DAC. You aren't missing anything.

I did too. DAC is still on board, better performance from newer cpu and more ram, battery life is just little shorter around 1h on screen time, screen is much better too.

Thanks! The problem there is that in Europe the G8 is not sold. Only the G8s which strangely has no DAC (and a slightly different camera). So the question is a bit if the camera improvements are making up for the DAC loss...
So the v40 is a real alternative but rare to find new these days and sells around 450 Euro which is a bit too much for a 2018 or so phone. The G8s sells for 399.

Going to the G8 from the v30 has been worth it for me. It still has many of the audio/video/camera features that the v30 had and isn't too tall.

I did upgrade from a V30 to G8S. I miss the quad DAC, but overall it's a nice phone. Much faster, better cameras. Although it's very fragile, the glass back of my G8S has already cracked after one fall. Had to get a case to hide the crack. So be careful.

Thanks so much. Good to hear camera improvement is worth it.

Get a g8 not a g8s. And it's fine if it's used, just make sure it's grade A or 9/10 and unlocked.

I moved from the V30+ to the G8. I like the G8 a lot more because my V30 had what looked like black crush. I like the sound quality on the G8, which is interesting considering there is no top speaker. It definitely feels faster and it's still light in weight. It's very comfortable to hold as well. I started using the facial unlock and it's way more efficient than it was on the V30.

Disappointed by the LG Nexus 5X specs and price ... is the LG G4 still worth buying?

As the title says, I am really disappointed by the N5X price in Europe compared to the specs. Is the LG G4 still worth buying it?
Is the LG overlay acceptable? (This is the only thing which really holds me off buying the G4 at the moment, because I really love stock Android)

This decision is really up to what features you find value in. I love my G4 and you would have to decide if you want a phone that has removable battery and expandable storage to say have fingerprint scanner and the latest OS. These phones are different in a lot of ways.

I picked up the G4 the day it came out,so I've had a good few months with it. Definitely no regrets. Coming from Samsung, it's a much less intrusive version of Android..... Than say... Touchwizz. It could benefit from extra features for battery saving mode like on the Sony or SAMSUNG, but it easily lasts me a day.
One of the best cameras, used it on my recent trip Italy, if you are into photography... You can have a lot of fun.
With every phone you will find +/-, but sure you can probably get a good deal on aG4, making it a real phone to consider.

I can answer one of those questions: the overlay is acceptable, because 99.5% of the time I don't see it because I use the camera/browser/gallery/app of choice, instead of playing with the settings. That might be different in your case, but since you asked I thought I'd answer.
Hell! I'd recommend the G4 over their 6P! For that European price, I'd 100% recommend the G4 over it!!! No doubt about it! You can get the G4 for 420 euros! The 6P will be 650 and I still think the G4 will compare just as well Or even better in the camera department and battery life. Nexus' aren't known for battery life. Neither is the LG, but hey! ...

no where as fast as you would get on nexus. they come in time though.
I'm also looking at ordering the G4 after the disappointment of the 5X, but it looks like LG will always gimp Nexus devices so it won't compete with their own flagship.
LG seems to be the only manufacturer left that give all the choices for users, even Samsung is going Apple direction.
I find LG interface to be much more bearable than Samsung which to me personally is unusable. This is helped by the fact of on-screen buttons. But I'm just waiting for CyanogenMod availability.

Then you are not a typical nexus user. You are interested in nexus only because updates are regular and this keeps the value of your device up.
You really prefer to have the extra 'features' every non nexus device offers.
So is this the same as the OP or not.

86 in photo and 79 in video for both but one has 84 points and G4 83 points, anyways DxoMark just sucks, a french reviewer... never in low light
I'm disappointed in the 5x because of the faux look of dual front speakers when in reality one is just an earpiece speaker, nothing more and lack of qi charging, and same outdated storage options. Really don't care about the lack of RAM, not like I can tell a difference going from the G4 to nexus 5, though all of it is hard to justify at $380 when you pay $20 more and get 3gb of ram, a 5.7 inch 2k screen, and an SD slot by choosing a moto x pure edition. 5x specs would be fine with nexus 4 pricing tiers
To answer your question if you're a purist like me, LG UX will drive you bonkers. So much stuff they changed just to be different that doesn't really have a purpose. I like it overall OK but have already decided I'm going back to a nexus or a moto next year. Also the memory leak is in full effect on it as LG has written 5.1.1 off as "too minor to even bother with" which means it won't get fixed until you get marshmallow which probably won't be until 2016

That was quick but the most interesting scores are the N6P is top for texture in stills beating the S6 & G4 and beating both again for Noise by 4 points.
I think the comparisons of N6P against S6/G4 are going to be interesting, hard as it might be to believe, expect the N6P shots to look slightly better in details than the S6/G4. How to counter that ? reduce to 12MP on both, now noise & details will look sharper and the difference will be hard to tell. Still, this is an achievement for the N6P. The 6S+ did not get there. The Z5 did.
In terms of video stabilisation its a good ten points behind the G4 so jerky video.
12MP and 1/2.3" rear camera.
The big catch is that there is no OIS in either N5X or N6P, pretty shocking considering N5 & N6 had it. Go to the trouble to make a good camera and then leave out OIS. Seriously WTH!!!! So like the Z5 except the Z5 will have more features ootb. You better have good handholds a la xperia or M9 to get clear low light shots with these nexii.
What will the camera interface be like, google camera has always been very limited. 3rd party cams will be essential. And then we will find out just how slow the shutter gets to.
They left out wireless charging on both ! ok, i get it that morotola is crap at wireless charging but LG already nailed it with the 5, two years ago.
Course for those who want sd & removable battery, software is not going to be able to fix
I've just returned my LG G4 to get the Nexus 5x.
I loved the G4's camera but the bloatware, bluetooth issues, buggy smart unlock, constant notifications of "NFC may drain battery" when using my car dock, the big when you put it on charge, the bing when it finishes charging, the bing when you turn it on, the bing when you turn it off.... it stopped being an enjoyable device to use and it was all because of what LG had done to Android.
So I'm going back to stock android. Originally I was going to wait for a G4 AOSP or Cyanogen rom but with the announcement of the fantastic Nexus 5x camera I decided to make the move while I still could..
The feature list is cut down compared to the G4 but it is stuff I am not so concerned with. I've not used expandable storage since moving to use Google music, Photo, Docs, Keep and Drive. I've never used wireless charging, and I don't game on my phones so I am not worried about the 1gb less of ram, especially when my Nexus 4 uses nearly 1GB of ram less than the LG G4 when idling.
I got the G4 after trying almost all other phones out there. I had Z3, HTC One M9, S6, Nexus 6, Iphone 6, and now G4 and the G4 blows them all away.
It is quicker than the others, has no memory or multitasking issues contrary to some minor views in this thread, the bluetooth, 4g and wifi work perfectly, smart lock works fine too, the camera beats all of the other phones I owned, and the battery life is equal to if not better than all at 5 Hours SOT at 60% screen brightness.
The new google launcher is AWFUL so wanting that is just nonesense, and the LG launcher has replaced Nova for me, because it's just as customisable.
Nexus fans won't want it though because they want Stock = Boring, and prefer the boring look to a decent camera and features. Anyone expecting the new Nexus devices to actually have decent real world camera is praying to the wrong gods.
I have no memory leak issues with my Verizon model, and love 95% of this phone.
Coming from a Nexus/Moto X background, I find LG's ui decent and mostly easy to use. There are 2 or 3 little annoyances in how settings are accessed, but Nova Launcher fixes most design issues - an icon pack and new screen layout, plus gestures to shortcut to the settings I use most.
I world consider rooting to clean up the other small issues, but I'm a regular Android Pay user do I'm holding off until that all shakes out.

Im a huge nexus fan ive owned all of them from the first HTC to the last motorola. I bought the g4 blindly to test the non nexus waters and this phone has blown me away especially after the updates and the camera is super amazing and no nexus can or will beat it. Dont get me wrong ill probably grab the new nexus 5 based on stock so i can have fun rooting and putting custom roms on it, but besides having cutting edge software it will be my secondary phone and ill stick with my g4 for everyday use. To be honest im a crack flasher and it feels good to not have that urge with my g4, i got root and thats all i needed to get rid of some things and add xposed to tweak it a bit. Very happy with my g4 and will likely get the g5 when it drops.

Hello, I bought the G4 for about a month and it has no problem till now. Everything is OK. The body design is a little bend and quite comfortable playing with the phone. But the price is a little bit expensive for me. I was impulsive to buy it. Fortunately it performs well overall.

Yes. In terms of hardware, it's about even up. And the G4 also offers a miniSD slot, exchangeable battery, and nice back covers. Only possible drawback might be the battery live, probably mostly thanks to the G4's insane resolution.

I don't like the LG icons, but that can be easily changed by using a different launcher like Nova. Also, the colors for toast messages and quick settings are a bit bright (cyan). And the mobile data protocol (LTE, G3, ...) is displayed as own icon instead of small text in the reception bar icon. Most of the rest can easily be ignored or even be disabled in the settings.
But a lot of this (and more) can be modified even without unlocking the bootloader. You can flash rooted ROMs via the cable firmware update screen, and then use FlashFire to flash other ZIP updates like Xposed or themed variants (warning: very slow...).
With the European H815 version, you can also unlock the bootloader, but you'll lose warranty, and it can't be unlocked. But it'll allow you to flash "more AOSP" ROMs. (Official CM12 is work in progress, but there's an inofficial port available.)

Android M at least has been announced for the G4. I guess it's hard to tell even by LG's developers, as it depends on the changes made by Google.
But then, the changes made since Android 4.1 aren't that impressive anyway IMHO, and several recent updates had some teething troubles, so maybe it's not so bad to wait a bit longer...

Is it the right time to buy a new G4 or should I wait for something new?

2016 is almost here and soon is the CES and I want a new phone.
Now I have SGS3.
Should I wait to see what will be in CES or just getting a new G4?
thanks guys.
I would wait for Snapdragon 820
I would wait too. The G4 is the best phone i've owned to be fair barring the S2 when it first came out, which blew me away, but next year LG should raise the bar even higher and Samsung might catch up with something that's not laggy and ugly too.

what bar did LG raise with G4? it has a great camera, but so do iphone6 and S6..
the only other things I can think off are removable battery, sd card slot and frequent updates (which is to be expected of a flagship)..
in every other aspect, G4 lags behind competition - software, build quality - materials used, battery life, sound quality, processing power

I can agree that LG doesn't manufacture the best phones out there. But it's still a solid phone with some pro's and a few more con's. I've been a Samsung user all my life and decided to buy an LG after I owned a Note 4. Both phones are pretty good, but I love my LG for its SD-Card-Slot and the camera. I need a lot of space, because I have like 200 GB of music and a lot of videos. LG supports MicroSD's up to 2 TB. That's definately a big fat pro!
I don't regret leaving Samsung, but if the S7 would feature an SD-Slot I will go back to Samsung. And to answer OP's question: I'd wait, too. Wait for the LG V10, which will be released this month (think it's a nice phone and better than the G4). Don't know how long you can bear to wait, but if you like Samsung wait for the S7. Still the best smartphones regarding the design (imho). Despite all of that LG is very good, too. It's a matter of taste I guess Cheers
it's the best time because you have to think about the price also

I think the S7 will be shipped in the first quarter of 2016 (Maybe february / March). I don't know about the G5.
The V10 has a slightly bigger screen and I personally love huge phones, but waiting is ok I think. The G5 will propably be on sale in summer and that's a long time to wait
I don't know about your financial situation but I'd be like: Buy the G4, sell it when the G5 comes out, buy the G5
But that's only me

well, am in the same boat as well. but for me since I'll be leaving my home country for a job outside, I need to buy something now so I can check it within 2-3 weeks that I've. V10 seems nice but nothing extraordinary compared to G4 and the price is high as well. So, am stuck as well on what to do

LG will only use OLED displays for its V series of smartphones

https://www.xda-developers.com/lg-only-use-oled-displays-v-series-smartphones/
the reason LG used LCD on the G7 ThinQ was because the G series is more mainstream than the V series.
The company wants to include more premium specifications in the V series because of its niche nature.

OLED, starting with the 2017 V30. This phone and all future LG V phones will have OLED.
Whereas the just-announced 2018 G7 goes back to LCD, like the early 2017 G6.
People thought once LG started using OLED (late 2017), all their flagship phones would have it.
Or that since new G7 has LCD, that OLED was just an experiment for V30.
This article explains their strategy to differentiate between the two flagships, G and V.

I have always been a fan of Samsung, I have been buying subsequent releases of Note. But I wanted to have the best audio on the market and I bought the V30.
And I must say - that my next phone will be V40 ! The battery holds 2 days, nothing hangs, does not jam. And I thought LG was crap ...
It's not true! The best phone I ever had!
I might get the G7, if they give T-Mobile the 6GB with 128 storage. My only reason is that I actually prefer LCD over OLED.
Unless LG makes the next V series a little better in the OLED department, I can't see myself going for it again.
Plus I like the idea of the fingerprint sensor and power button being seperate. That notch is just sad but it's better than the extreme edge of the Galaxy line that I can't even hold properly!
I can't do anything until December, so we'll see what is around then.

It would be nice if TMobile gets that version but it's unlikely unfortunately. OLED issues aside V30 is still pretty good but the G7 is nice too, just don't like that smaller battery.
I wish TMobile was getting the V35 honestly, everything the G7 has in a much better looking package in my opinion.
More probably they don't think they can hit the production/quality requirements for the G7 and V30/S/V35 to all run POLED. Their quality's pretty crap even only making enough for one model. I personally had to return two V30's for screen color issues.

Thinking whether to buy LG G7 ThinQ or wait for V40 (a V20 User)

Hello Everyone,
I am fan of LG and using LG V20 currently. I have used Optimus Black, G, G3 in the past years and I could not leave LG for many reasons. So here is my question. Will it be good if I buy G7 now or shall I wait for LG V40? Most importantly I am from India and If I buy G7, I will get G7 with Quad DAC.
I am not sure why G7 released with Oreo 8.0 not 8.1 (New Software upgrade center team wont have time to give 8.1 to latest flagship??)
As far as the early reviews I like G7 for the below features.
1. 16 MP wide angle CAM and AI enabled Primary CAM
2. 18:9 display, Brightest screen with 1000 Nits.
3. Obviously latest SD845
I don't like G7 for the below
1. QC 3.0 charger in the box even though phone supports 4.0
2. Less battery compared to V20 and V30
3. Hybrid Sim slot. V20 has dedicated slot.
Biggest reason why I can think of skipping G7 and wait for V40
Hope V40 will come with Android P since in a month or so my V20 will have 8.0. so buying G7 wont make any difference I think

G7 has no 18:9 aspect ratio i think its around 19,5:9 (i think this doesnt matter, i think your were relating to small bezels i guess)
The other Pros seem legit.
About the cons:
I would not care so much about the charger.
I would suggest to wait for reviews here in the forum and youtubers to judge the battery. I think it will be similar to the S8. (people will argue that they claim the screen is 30% more efficient and that it has 2 generations newer SoC but at the end of the day, your have an octacore flagship SoC and a 1000nit bright screen... this is sucking all batteries dry dont fool yourself. especially if you buy the phone for the bright mode and the high performance (you mentioned that these are important to you) there is no reason in arguing that the battery life will be any good. from what i heard the boost is 3min maximum because the phone overheates after that... you can guess that its the battery overheating since its draining so fast. this is bad for battery lifetime in general as well as battery life througout the day)
I am not sure what your mean with the sim card slot. But if you need 2 sim cards, i guess you will have to manage with the 64/128 gig of storage. i think thats enough for most people.
I dont think that the V40 will arrive with Android P. I think it will take them longer. The V30 did not arrive with Oreo as far a i know.
I belive though that the Price will drop rapidly. The G6 was 700 Euros in Germany and 2 months later already it was down to 450 Euros. You dont need to know anything about Euros to see that the price dropped significantly in a short period of time. If you wait for the V40, you can decide for yourself what is the better phone but when it arrives the G7 will probably be down to 60% of its starting price.

Thanks for taking your time and reply to the post. I will surely wait for some weeks to get more reviews and then decide.
Btw why do you think V40 wont come with Android P, I got V20 with Nougat before anyother device with latest android in that period.

How much does V30 cost now in DE after half year and how big is it's price loss?

Hello Everyone,
I am fan of LG and using LG V20 currently. I have used Optimus Black, G, G3 in the past years and I could not leave LG for many reasons. So here is my question. Will it be good if I buy G7 now or shall I wait for LG V40?

I'm eager to buy G7, in my case it probably would be 128/6Gb variant. I'm tired waiting for specbump, 845 seems to be lots better over 820 in V20. I'm sitting on V20, too. As for V40 it's too long to wait, and still I'm almost sure it'll have same 845 , same 6Gb and only difference might be OLED, just tad bit better quality than V30. Is it worth waiting another 6 month? IDTS, I don't think so.
Probably MI7 or 1+6, U12 will be some overwhelming devices, and I'd prefer one of them to G7, anyway G7 won't appear until June
If until June Youtubers will show some major problems with G7 I'll then retreat and buy V30 or Pixel2XL instead and then happily wait for V40
V30 is like 500€ on Amazon right now, started at 900€ last December, arrived pretty late. By that time nobody wanted to buy it lol they just take too long to make it available in Europe. Like 3 months after presentation.

Whatever. Like if LG had made it available in September on Europe Amazon somebody would've bought it for 900 €. No. Nobody. It would lay on shelves the same until price eventually dropped to 400 €
On your reason for waiting for the V40 as it might support dual sim AND a separate SD card slot, I don't think it will. The V30 ThinQ has the same configuration as the LG G6/G7 (https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v30s_thinq-9090.php), so you give up SIM 2 for the SD card. I thought I was going to be disappointed when I got my dual SIM G6 because of this, but I wasn't. I keep both SIMs in full time, and as @0alfred0 said, I have enough memory on the phone and don't really need it anyway.
@krk2krk you bought g7 bro? Am interested if we can unlock the bootloader of Indian version. Or what version is that we are getting? Any idea
There is a lot I like about this phone. Great sound, good screen and decent brightness with a loud speaker. Be prepared for bad battery life. LG just doesn't optimize well. My HTC u11 has the same size battery and getting 7 hours sot was normal. I once got 9 hours sot.
I just purchased a battery case which adds 4700 mah to the existing 3000. Now I can run at max brightness and max resolution.

Does resolution even effect this phones battery?

That's wrong. U11 had 835 SoC which is much more cooler and energy efficient than 845 which is hot and power hungry. U11 is suited to compare with LG V30, V30 had same battery life to U11 because same SoC
And also U11 had much less bright screen, with max brightness around 350nit, MAX. G7 in daylight boosts to 1000nit, while U11 will keep 350 only. Because of that U11 will show better battery life, you just may keep your G7's brightness at 80% without auto on to keep its brightness at 350-400nits. If you turn autobrightness in G7 on than it'll suck juice very quicker than U11

I recommend waiting for the V40 as it will be a better device with much better features. Especially battery life will be better as it will be equipped with an OLED panel

I am waiting for V40 currently. I hope people seen the leaked render of V40 and it has 5 cameras. I am really looking forward to buy a phone with latest Android now. I am sure that G7 will get 9.0 next year.

G7 released in India for 570$ and I hope LG now understand well about getting customers who buy their flagship phone. so V40 will come around 600$ in India.

Around Summer '19? Yeah. You know that G7 is a half-year old phone? So it's selling for $600 everywhere around the world

Agree but waiting for few months to get a flagship for 600$ is good right
Waiting for few months till summer '19 means you get 8 months old not so top flagship phone. It isn't very smart idea, is it?

Of course. I'm too still waiting for price drop of G7. What I mean is just that lg is not selling G7 in India cheap. From the start. It's about time to announce V40 and price for G7 dropped to 600 so LG are starting to bring g7 on not so rich markets.
BTW is G7 sold in India "made in India" also? As I've read V30 had been assembled in India, probably V40 will be too

You are right on that.

Who's getting it ?

Are you planning to buy LG's new flagship ?
I've been hanging onto an HTC 10 and will either get this or the HTC U12!
I am using the V30, and i'm thinking of getting the G7 because of that Display brightness and boombox Sound !
But the ThinQ is, that its dont have an AMOLED Screen.
But in General If you are using the V30 you dont have to "Upgrade" to the G7, i will wait to See what the V40 will Bring, and then decide to Switch or Not.
For now the we dont have many DEVs for the V30 for having new Roms. This is a downside of the new LGs Phones. Maybe i will leave the LG Community to enter the Pixel 3 XL or One Plus 6T Community. Because i prefere Software oder Hardware
Im still using the G5 and im very happy that it is going to get Oreo, so I dont consider upgrading for at least one more year.
The G7 is a beast of a phone indeed.

Don't be fooled by Display brightness, it's only gimmick. Under sunlight G7 will bump up brightness just like your V30 does, exactly. Only difference is your may bump up yourself but only for 3 minutes long, after that it'll keep brighness on standard until cooled. And in those 3 minutes it'll eat up 5-7% of battery I bet

Definitely getting one of the most anticipated of 2018, hoping to get the unlocked version to UAE. Still on my LG G4. I wished all variants are bootloader unlocked.

I wonder is the pixel port mod works with this phone. I saw they had one for the v30 that could use both cameras normal and wide. I'm on s8 and thinking about picking this phone up but unsure yet reviews say the camera pics are way over saturated.
I got the g7 plus. I live in Korea. Model number is LM-G710N. Here are a few shots of normal camera and wide angle. I didnt change positions at all. Battery life has been excellent even though it only has 3000mah.
Oh i also forgot to mention, Boombox is legit.
I'm a huge HTC fan, but the 12 isn't available on Sprint so its either this phone or the Samsung S9. Right now I'm leaning towards the g7.
My questions is, what does the development look like? I've been with HTC since the beginning and it looks like LG locks their stuff down... I'd want stock Oreo if I can't have Sense!
Ordered from tmobile in raspberry rose.
I am thinking about getting one, But since I am a developer, I wont consider one till I know that the t-mo edition can be rooted........ So I am going to wait a bit and see how the scene looks in 2 months....
and yes I know I can buy a US unlocked edition, that is beside the point...........................
Purchased the bogo with TMobile. Hopefully that screen and bottom headphone jack makes it worth it. Been back on the v30+ after Oreo and the phone is acceptable other than the screen.
hello, how's the screen contrast, on the web i can see that the blacks are almost grey because of lcd ?
