Top Apps That Require Google Services, and a Workaround for Huawei Phones - Huawei P30 Guides, News, & Discussion

It’s no secret that Huawei’s latest flagship phones does not support Google Apps. At launch, there was a way to sideload the GMS and Google Play Services, but that was quickly taken down. That leaves us in a weird place. We have this flagship Android phone but a limited app store, the Huawei AppGallery, and no Google apps or services.
We wouldn’t really know this we use require GMS to download or to use. That doesn’t mean there aren’t work-arounds for Google’s own services or some other apps. Below are some of the 10 most popular apps and services and how we managed to get them working on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro without GMS or Google services installed.

APK Pure
Since we don’t have Google apps, that means no Google Play Store. Going around and searching for each new app update and apk as they are released is annoying to say the least. APK Pure is an app store that essentially replaces the Google Play Store. It’s a better service to use than downloading APKs directly because it supports installing split APKs. This means apps like Spotify can be installed through APK Pure even if you can’t sideload the APK normally. It will even handle installing updates!
To install APK Pure, all you need to do is sideload the APK Pure app. Once installed, you can search for and install any apps you please. It makes for a very good replacement to the Google Play Store.
You can install APK Pure pretty easily
Download the APK linked below
Install it.
Enjoy your new App Store.

Telegram
Telegram is one of the apps that doesn’t require GMS at all. You can sideload it and use it normally. The only downside of not having GMS installed is the lack of location services. Many apps, including Telegram, require GMS for finding and sharing your location in an app. Telegram, being one of those apps, won’t have access to your location without GMS. This isn’t a huge deal as every other feature works perfectly. To install this app, you can install it through APK Pure or download it through APK Mirror and install the APK yourself.
Installing Telegram is actually really simple.
Open APK Pure
Search for “Telegram”
Select Telegram and hit “Install”
Enjoy your honestly amazing messaging client

Gmail
Gmail is a bit of a special case. For Gmail, there is no app that will work. Other email apps like Outlook work, but Gmail doesn’t. That doesn’t stop the web version from working. You can easily just go to the Gmail website and have full access to Gmail and your email. It isn’t as great as the app, but in a situation like this, it’s the best you can get and it’s good enough for the basics.
Gmail Website
Skype
Skype is one of the older and most loved chat platforms. I’ve had it for years and it’s easy to use and honestly just great. Luckily, not having Google isn’t going to stop you from being able to speak to your friends and family on Skype. Everything in the app works perfectly fine without the need for GMS.
To install Skype, it’s simple, just use APK Pure.
Open APK Pure
Search for “Skype”
Select Skype and click “Install”
Enjoy Skyping your friends and family
WhatsApp
WhatsApp is probably one of the most popular chatting apps worldwide. There are over 1 billion people on WhatsApp. WhatsApp can’t just leave you in the dark if you don’t have Google services, so they don’t require it. That’s right, you can use WhatsApp on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro without it. It works perfectly with no features missing.
Installing is as easy as pie as well.
Open APK Pure
Search for “WhatsApp”
Select WhatsApp and install it
Enjoy messaging your friends “What’s up” on WhatsApp
Facebook
Last but not least, Facebook. Facebook doesn’t require Google Services what-so-ever. You can just sign into your account and it will work perfectly. This is because Facebook designs their apps to work on any device, no matter the services installed. All you need to do is sideload the apps and it will work perfectly.
Installing Facebook is also super easy to install
Open APK Pure
Search for “Facebook”
Select Facebook and click “install”
Facebook is now installed and works, sign in and catch up with your friends.
Facebook on APK Pure
Twitter
Twitter, like Instagram, doesn’t require any PWAs or require GMS. All you need to do is side load the app and it works! Just like Telegram, it won’t be able to find your location. This generally isn’t an issue though, you can just type in a location to find it. Installing this is just as simple as the others, all you need to do is sideload the APK and it will work.
You can easily install Twitter with a few clicks
Go to APK Pure
Search for “Twitter”
Select Twitter and click “install”
Enjoy tweeting!

Instagram
Instagram is one of the most popular social media apps I’ve ever used. Luckily, it works perfectly without GMS. Unlike Telegram, every feature in the app works. All you need to do is side load the app. You can install this through APK Mirror or APK Pure.
Installing Instagram is something you can do in a snap
Go to APK Pure
Search for “Instagram”

LinkedIn
LinkedIn actually works really well without GMS. Everything about the app works so you can check in on your contacts really easily. The only thing that won’t work is signing in with Google, but that’s not a huge deal since you can just sign in using your email. Everything else about the app works.
Installing LinkedIn is just like installing most other apps.

Spotify
Spotify is one of the great apps that doesn’t require GMS what-so-ever. All you will need to do is install the APK through APK Pure. Spotify does use split APKs which means you won’t be able to sideload just once APK like many other apps. Once installed, it will function normally. You can sign in using Facebook or your Spotify account, everything works.
To install Spotify, it’s really simple.
Open the APK Pure app store
Search for “Spotify”
Select Spotify and click “Install”
Follow the prompts to install Spotify
Enjoy your music!

YouTube
YouTube is by far the largest video media site on the internet. It has almost every video you would ever want to watch. It has so much and can entertain you for hours on end. Sadly, YouTube requires GMS as it is a Google app. Luckily, there are alternatives.
The first alternative is just using the YouTube website. You can go to YouTube.com on the Huawei Browser and have full access to your account. It will also allow you to sign into your account and view all your recommended videos.
The next way to get it working is using YouTube Vanced and MicroG. Luckily, neither of these apps require root. Installing is pretty simple as well.
Download the MicroG and YouTube Vanced APKs
Install both MicroG and YouTube Vanced
You can now sign into your Google account and view all your recommended videos and subscriptions
YouTube Vanced and MicroG APKs
Google Photos
Google Photos is the absolute best service Google has ever released. It allows you to store all your photos in a high quality formats. This is an amazing service, but sadly, it will crash without GMS installed. That means you won’t be able to use the Google Photos app. Instead, you can use the website. The Google Photos website allows you to view every picture you’ve taken and synced with Google Photos along with allowing you to upload photos to Google Photos.
Alternatively, you can use the Huawei Gallery app. The Huawei Gallery app allows you to sync data with Google as well. Using stock apps on your phone is always better than alternatives, so syncing with Huawei Gallery with Google data could really be your best bet.
If you aren’t into Huawei’s Gallery and want to use Google Photos, you can use the Google Photos website. It is really simple, all you need to do is sign into the mobile website through the Huawei Browser app. It has a great and easy to use UI along with the ability to upload photos.

Google Maps
Believe it or not, Google Maps is one of the few Google apps that actually works on EMUI 10 without Google apps. The full app doesn’t work, but the main and most important ones do. You are able to search for locations and navigate to the location. You can’t sign into your account or use previous locations through location history, but the main, and most important, parts of the app works.
To install Google Maps, its actually really simple.
Open the APK Pure app store
Search for “Google Maps”
Select Google Maps and click “Install”
Enjoy Google Maps!

Look, Google services are a huge part of Android, but that doesn’t mean you need them. It’s not going to be a perfect experience using a Huawei Mate 30 Pro without Google apps, but it works and most important services you might be interested in running on the phone should work well. There will be an outlier here and there, but most of the time it will be fine.
I bought my Mate 30 Pro, the Chinese LIO-AL00 variant, before the Google app ban and I was disappointed to see it was. As I used the phone without Google apps, I realized that they are less and less necessary if you are willing to work around it. The hardware and cameras are just so good, it’s worth the trade-off of ease of use for that amazing hardware and camera.

You need to install Google Account Manager 4.0.3 and any version of Google Services Framework and Google Services. If you are on Fire OS 4.1.1 (Sangria) then one extra permission needs to be granted via ADB. Instructions in this thread:

I second that. Viral Pro is even better than Youtube because you can have a popup player over any other applications. Logging in to Youtube account is also nice.
I can't find Viral Pro in the Amazon Store!!!

Hi I use instatube pro (not hd) it can download for offline viewing.
Snaptube
SnapTube is a great alternative client for YouTube:
Ad free
Video downloader
Direct MP3 downloader
Automatic updates through the app itself
I has been banned from the Google Play Store due to the downloading features.
It is listed on the Amazon AppStore, but I would not trust it: amazon version is 1.3.0 vs 1.9.1 for the latest official one. Maybe the one on Amazon is a fake or unauthorised listing by a third party.
Get it from the official page here:
http://snaptubevideo.com/
Official XDA Discussion.
Use opera browser side load the play store version
Supertube has background playing and a pop out player.
NewPipe! You can find it in the F-droid, awesome free open-source app manager. It is really nice if you use youtube for music, as you can download the mp3 file (or video) with one button and play songs in the background.
For those who keep on FireOS 4, Skytube is a great Open Source option, available on the Amazon Store, its a native app (not a browser linked to mobile youtube like other "apps" on Amazon Store), you can read comments, upload your suscriptions (manually), the only cons, you cannot login, but its fine to light usage.

Block Ads on Youtube

I use YouTube adaway xposed mod on my phone & tablet and it works great. Its not working on AFTV. Anyone know why? Do I need to side load a different YouTube apk? I'd like it to work with the supported YouTube for amazon but will use the one in play store. Maybe its because amazon uses an older version?
Any help is welcomed. I hate these ads. They start before every video I watch now!
Install the YouTube mod from this very forum,it is older than the main YouTube app,but easier to block ads from, and it doesn't even require Google Play stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715
If you use WiFi,there is a useful ad blocker I use that works admittedly better (AND without even requiring root) since other ad blockers started failing on me.

I can't install the mod. Tried adb and just placing on sdcard. Are you using an older firmware? I'm on the latest. Not that that's the issue but I read the thread you linked and it seems simple.
I am still on the older firmware.
The normal YouTube app has to be uninstalled before you install the mod version.
Having a web browser, terminal emulator for ADB via localhost, and a file explorer for learning the directory and filename of APKs you want to install is really useful for non-rooted users.

I uninstalled YouTube before attempting it. I'm not home now but used my phone to download it yesterday and I see the apk is 12.72 KB...that can't be right, is it? Maybe my issue was as simple as a bad or incomplete download. I'll try again later.
One thing I hate about various transfer protocols is that they can VERY often corrupt files upon transfer.
Things are much easier if you can directly download the file in a browser on the FireTV and use the really helpful terminal emulator method for installing/sideloading it.
The latest Opera Browser version has a desktop quality download UI,allowing you to pick the name of a file to be saved, and the directory to save it in.
Such a shame other things in Opera browser are a little broken, like the save password dialog causing a crash unless clicked away from.

I do appreciate the followup but when you say transfer, are you talking about the actual download? Or pushing it to my AFTV sdcard? Because I don't see the difference between downloading it to my phone's browser, my Mac, PC or opening opera on AFTV.
I just wanted to clarify. I can certainly download it with AFTV but its weird that every link yields an incomplete apk. And, I believe this mod was made for phones and tablets so you'd think it'd work the same or better with my phone.
Try getting the inverted copy.
The download page says this one is 6.15MB ,so you should expect a size near that.
I do hope you can sort this out,and I wish you luck.
control youtube app with remote from fire tv stick?
hi is there a way to control the app with the fire tv stick remote?
i tried and searched for a clip, but then i wasn't able to select a search result.
Is there a remote optimized version for youtube other than the amazon with adds version?

But that doesnt seem to work with aftv youtube. Im going to sideload the play store version. It should work like it does on my phone. What I dont know is how a remote will work with it.
Update,-well that didnt take long. It wont launch. What version of youtube are people using for ad blocking?
The Google Play YouTube is completely useless on FireTV because of the forever re-updating Google Play Services beyond 7.0.99 whch breaks everything that relies on it,primarily Google Play itself and the YouTube app.
This is why I use the YouTube Mod since it doesn't rely on Google Play Services.
Someone should really upload a patched Google Play Services 7.0.99 copy so we can avoid the function breaking updates.
All it needs is a patch to either disable the updater within it or make it think it is version 9.9 or higher from the year 2029 to stop the updates.

If you are rooted, there is an XPosed module that eliminates the need for Google Play Services. http://repo.xposed.info/module/xeed.xposed.dngmod
my experience
same for me:
the adblock apk does not work with the fire tv app.
the youtube app from #1 works, but cant get controlled with the app
maybe someone ist able to modify the app the it can get controled by remote without touchscreen

Do you really need to install Google play store ?

Was going to use Aptoide or something like that instead the Google play stuff for my Android apps
Will that work ok or will it have problems also ?
Thanks
You could use any store in theory, but some apps need the Google Play services, otherwise they won't start / work properly.
The Playstation app for example. I didn't want to install a whole GAPPS package, so I installed only the Play services.
In that case it worked, but I can't promise it will work for every app.
No,
I guess you could always switch to a windows phone if you don't need any apps ;o)
The only use I have found for gapps is downloads from play store, and even those apps can be sideloaded without the need for gapps. Otherwise, in my opinion, gapps framework is a constant drag on fire-phone. They use up resources in the background.
I have about 7 androd devices and have disabled Google Apps on almost all of them, and life is good.
Same here, using F-Droid and a 2nd repo I made for myself. I'd rather buy (or donate for) apps directly, e.g. here on XDA instead of using the Play Store.
Novice users tend to prefer Google Play Store & services, because it's comfortable and (usually ^^) hassle free, I suppose.
I have apps I've paid for on google play store and there are other apps there that are not on amazon's app store so yeah you really do.
I'm still running 4.6.1, so no Google Play Store or Services for me. I get all my apps from Aptoide and most of them work fine. So you don't really need to use Google stuff but as mentioned some apps won't work...
Any app store will work... the only advantage about using google play store and google services is that you need google play services to get most google apps working such as maps, hangouts, etc. Also, any games that work with the Play store scoring system will require google play. Other than that, most 3rd party apps will work fine if they don't integrate with google play.

Facebook on N1? YouTube for Chinese N1s without Google Play Services

I'm on Android 5.1.1 on Chinese ROM (yeah, that means no Google Play Services). I've been using Aptoide lately and it has turned out to be an acceptable Play Store alternative.
Anyway, the problem i've encountered lately is with Facebook. Before, I can install the lastest Facebook, regardless of the chipset architecture (ARM, x86). But now, Facebook only runs when installed as x86 version and that means i'm stuck with a very low version of Facebook (like with the Zenfone series). Can anyone on other N1s (especially Taiwanese-flashed ROM) tell me if you guys have the lastest version of Facebook? My current version of Facebook is 58.0.0.28.70. If you guys have lastest version of Facebook, can you extract the apk and send it here? I would be delighted! Much appreciated!
Also, I've found a thread about installing YouTube without Google Play Services. Basically, you'll still get the full YouTube package except for the fact that you can't log in and watch subscribed channels, but it's fine since no YouTube alternative is acceptable (most of them are outdated and are not compatible with Google APIs anymore). Just want a load off your chest since YouTube is essential on every tablet (I can't live without YouTube!).
