s9 settings menu > sub-menu so hard to tell if there's a sub-menu or not - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I don't know if this applies to all Samsung phones, or even all Android phones on Android 9, but it's infuriating to figure out if there's a sub-menu when looking at the settings menu.
For instance, I go into the Notifications Setting, and there are settings for the recent apps - say "Calendar". There is a very very faint vertical line next to the on/off button, that indicates if I press this item, I will get a lower level menu with more options.
The problem is it's very hard to see this line, and as a result I end up clicking like a fool on almost all of the menus, to see if there is a sub-level menu to get more options or not. If there isn't, I end up switching that setting off to on, or on to off... very infuriating.
This is horrible horrible user interface design. Is there a fix to this mess so it's obvious at a glance if a settings menu has additional options / menus?

Do you mean easy mode where it gets rid of the app drawer and has more of an iOS like experience?
I'm a power user and I wouldn't like the easy mode.

[Q] Soft Key Mod to make them disappear completely?

its a shame to have the soft keys display while youre playing a game or watching a video. Any way to make them disappear completely and get a true full screen experience?
i was thinking maybe configuring it so that you gently tap the power button to make them go away(come back) & for normal power button use do a long press instead.
Probably a pointless bump/post from me, but this is something that I'd really like to have too.
Soft buttons sounded cool, but after getting the phone, they seem to be somewhat permanent and not particularly customisable either.
Videos seem to be the only application where they hide, but even then, simply tapping the screen _anywhere_ brings them back up again (even with screen control lock enabled).
I watch videos with subtitles and being a slow reader, tend to pause videos fairly regularly. It's annoying to have the video bounce around when I do so because of the soft buttons popping up.
Really would appreciate if anyone knows of a method to kill these soft buttons!
Yep I would love this as well, an option to enable this feature.
It would auto hide the soft keys, then a swipe up from the bottom will overlay the keys on top of the existing screen (so the app isn't resizing itself - like HD videos do when the keys come back).
Then we can use the full smexy 4.65" screen and real 720p.
it is up to the developer of the app to add the full screen code.
Dice Player was the first to add this and when you play videos, it automatically goes fullscreen and then a tap brings the buttons back.
i don't think that any mod or app could do it. You could probably make a mod that forces them to always hide in landscape, but the problem would be that they're always gone, even when you want them there.

I presume that an app can only indicate that the buttons should be hidden, and really doesn't have much more control than that?
So basically, unusable in games.

Surely there must be some sort of modification (even if it needs to go back to the kernel (forgive my ignorance if I'm totally off)) to allow us to do it?
I can understand that an app is restricted to the API provided to it, which is why I think an OS level mod needs to be done here.
I get it that this could be less convenient / more confusing, so believe that this shouldn't be in a stock ROM, but if I want to mod my phone this way, I should be able to, right?
i would love a rom that has a setting where i can choose certain apps that can hide the buttons on whatever apps i want. that would be awesome. dont know if its possible. especially on slingplayer. its a $30 app which rarely gets updated. who knows when they will update it. its a good thing i sideloaded it and didnt pay for it. i dont see how it can work on games though because tapping the screen is the way to get the buttons there. unless there is some sort of gesture to bring em back. i do think we will see a lot more out of soft buttons but it will take a while.
youtube seemingly does this for me....
I too think its a total waste having the buttons never move or disappear. Its a great concept, but google didnt take advantage of it at all. I just find it wasting space. Would love if they could be hidden.

i don't think so. the code is there to hide them, but in video apps they show back up on simply a touch. The game developers could add code to say that they only come up when you press pause. I don't see why that wouldn't be possible.
on a system level i'm sure it could be done, but as we've both said. it'll be much less convenient and more confusing.
heres an example, what happens if you enable that to play a game full screen, but that game has no exit option. You now have no way out of the game. The only way to get back to your homescreen is to shut off the phone.
so then, another mod would be required, you'd need a link to the home screen from the powermenu.
so your already up to two mods to do something that most people would not want.
The better thing is to just have the keys dim when playing a game like they do in honeycomb, and not just disappear.
i would also like a ability to hide them!
I think it would be cool if the soft keys had a transparent backround maybe the buttons could fade to dots like I have seen them do.

I haven't looked at the API, I'm just going on a hunch from what I've seen how apps react.
For example, if apps had such control over the buttons, why would they still show on touch even if screen control locking is enabled? Just a bug in the application, or perhaps just cannot be done?

Take the example in the first post - erhaps an option to toggle the buttons in the power menu.
One would presume that if you're playing a game, you're not looking to exit it every minute, so it's not like you exactly need a convenient exit button. If the toggle is done through the power menu, then it makes logical sense to go back there if you with to show the buttons again.
Of course, there'll probably be people who forget about where they turned off the buttons, so yes, slightly more confusing to newbies, but if there's a custom mod which allows this type of functionality, it would be really helpful to those who do understand. (after all, if you've gone to the effort to enable such a mod, you're sure to know about it)

I'm not sure about the "two mods" proposition - you can't really have one without the other so I'd think it would be classed as one, but I don't really want to debate about semantics here (neither can I really say anything about low level requirements to perform this mod).
As for most people not wanting it, perhaps, though I think the responses in this thread shows that there are people out there interested in this, and it's not only me. The value proposition is up to someone else to decide though.
Dimming the keys does not enable more screen space, which is the whole point of completely hiding them.
i dont have a problem with them, they hide automatically on things like netflix and need for speed shift...

honestly not sure. could be a bug or how it'd designed. since the galaxy nexus has no other way of letting you control it, most likely it's designed so that theres no way to perminately hide them.
If you added an option in the power menu to show/hide them, then that would make it just one mod. The two mods idea was just one to make them always hide in fullscreen apps, and then another one that would give you a home link in the power menu.
but having a link in the power menu to show/hide the buttons is actually a better idea. assuming it would work. And doing it this way would allow you an easy way to turn them on and off.
Might be NSFW for wallpaper.

This is the closes I can get it to hide, but it's still not full screen on games. Changed the color to black. It blends in with the background, but the highlighted button press is still there. Like hidden buttons.
Using Codename Android 1.0.1 ROM, it has the option to change the color built in, as does AOKP ROM.

actually google did take advantage of it. they added it to their own apps like youtube and gallery during video. and on other apps like phone during a call and gallery viewing pictures they hide.

Android 4.3 laggy

Has anyone noticed that the official Android 4.3 update is laggy as hell?
Like swyping through homescreens has lag even in the settings app it lags like crazy when scrolling and tapping on things
Has always run great for me. Did you factory reset after updating. Just like any computer its a good idea to occasionaly start fresh.

My SD card was the issue somehow. It was a generic one I replaced it with a real samsung one and its good now
My battery drain was also being caused by the SD card via media server trying to access it

This section might be hidden on some phones, but it’s very easy to access. On many phones, you just have to open a certain page in the settings and tap a button seven times. Use Google to figure out how to enable Developer options on your phone if it’s currently hidden (for example, search “enable developer options HTC One”).
Once you have access to Developer options, simply scroll until you find the following three settings, which may be located on the main screen or within an “Advanced” subsection:
Window animation scale
Transition animation scale
Animator animation scale
Tapping each of the three aforementioned settings will reveal that it’s set to “1x” by default. If you want to speed up your phone or tablet dramatically, simply change each of those three settings to “.5x” — that’s it.
Just to clarify, this doesnt actually speed up performance afaik. But it does make the device seem a bit snappier as it speeds up transitions.
It used to make more of a difference than it does now though. I think it was set to 1.5x or 3x in previous versions, so the change made more of a noticeable difference.

[Q] Note 4 aesthetic UI differences

How come I can not figure out how to get my quick settings to look like icons instead of list view. Anyone else know how to do this. I'll try to post a photo of one I've seen online.
Also, I guess AT&T has disabled the "mobile data" and "hotspot" quick toggle options, from the notification pull down.
I have friends and family with the verizon variant and they have some different quick toggles also not on AT&T UI. Such as "download booster"
Sure wish I had ROOT! It's the little things....
If anyone knows how to change any of this on the AT&T note 4 please help. Especially the quick settings portion of the menu. It's driving me insane. I want that icon view. And no I'm not talking about easy mode.
Hit the menu button inside your settings. Then hit view as and make your pick.
I'm also pretty underwhelmed with this update. While I love the speedup and smoothness of this I'm kinda disappointed that sammy(and att) left out a crap ton of 5+ goodies.
themeing options?
Underwhelmed is right. I thought lollipop was to bring icon / launcher themes. All I can find is "colorspace" profiles, or am I missing something?

List vs tab view. They still stay in list as far as the quick settings. It just separates all the others into other tabs. Still not icon view like photo I posted. Maybe its just the at&t version won't do it.

Hidden Notification History Log

I found a way to see a built-in notification history of android pie on a505f/ds
AP: A505FDDU1ASC7
I will attach the screenshot on how to see it.
By this way, you can see notifications even if it is hidden on the lock screen.
1. Fingerprint option must be enabled
2. Lock your phone and press power button to see the lock screen
3. Press anywhere on the screen to see any text over the fingerprint icon. (when the phone is charging it shows "charging: x%", Otherwise "Use biometrics to unlock"
4. Press that text and drag up. (You should get vibration feedback once you press that text)
5. You can see the notification history now
LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE SUCCEEDED. I WANT TO KNOW IF IT IS ME WHO DID THIS BY TWEAKING OR IS THE SAME WITH EVERYONE. THANKS
The default behaviour is not as you have described. Might be the effect of using tweaks like Notistar or Xposed/Magisk modules.

Notistar is an app that is made by Samsung for Android 9 (pie) to customize the notification screen. It is part of the Samsung good look app. It is a plugin, not a standalone app.
Good Look and its plugins are available in the United States, Australia, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
But you can download and use it from ApkMirror. You need an extra app to access its settings if you are not in one of those regions cause Samsung Good Look won't work on other regions. You can use Activity Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andrefrsousa.tools.activitymanager&hl=en_US) or a similar app that can run hidden activity to access it if you are not in one of those regions like me.

Question Put accessibility button back in the bottom button bar

I'm going through eye surgery and one of the things that I use quite a bit is the accessibility magnification.
In the latest versions of Android OS, there's some kind of floating thing that sticks to the sides of the screen and is almost constantly in the way of something I need to tab or whatever.
Loved it so much better when I had access to the button down at the bottom. I could just click it when I needed it.
So is there any way to put that back? I honestly did try to search but I don't think I'm using the correct search terms so I never found anything useful.

that shortcut is moveable but you are right, it can get in the way and is annoying.
Are you using 3 button navigation? In the accessability options under Acessability Shortcut, it says you need to use 3 button nav for it appear in the navigation bar.

Huh. I have a three button navigation running. I'll have to look at the settings and see what I'm missing. I don't suppose it makes any difference that this is a pixel 6 pro running the latest?

Yeah, I just checked the settings and it is definitely on and there is no indication or slider or anything that says to add it to the navigation bar.
First of all, I don't run the factory system image, I run GrapheneOS, which is a security minded distribution of google-free AOSP.
Looks like the option you're looking for is at the bottom of the accessibility menu, "Accessibility shortcuts". Go in there and select "Accessibility button", then "Location", and select "Navigation bar". That would do it for you, at least on Graphene. Hope it helps.
Oh you rock!!
What an odd place to put that choice. It's buired where I wouldn't think to look for it.
