Gemini-PDA US on Tmobile - Planet Gemini PDA Questions & Answers

Starting yesterday, my gemini will simply shutdown as if i've pulled the battery from the device. After a few bootup attempts, i managed to get it booted and operating.. about 24 hours passed and it starting doing it again. It's really frustrating and don't know what I can do. At some point a few weeks back, the bottom cover got a small dent on it preventing it from sealing properly. I snap it back into place all the time but sometimes the cover comes off and exposes the battery.
I was going to ask if there's a way I can buy a bottom cover to replace it. Currently, though, my priority is restoring the gemini so that it doesn't shut itself down. Battery is at ~70% and i use few apps. The device was bought to replace my palm pilot and is my texting device. It is imperative I restore its operation soon.
I will be greatful for any options for troubleshooting.
Thx

After 20 tries the device is booted and running. The screen would go black and it wouldn't respond until I press the power button, then it boots.
Is it possible the device was overheating for some reason? Is there a log I can review that would give an indication?

[pics][fix] Sleep of Death?

I have the p600, bought at Best Buy a few days after launch. Have it rooted using auto root. It has been running perfectly until today. It started taking a few presses of the power button to turn it on after the screen went to sleep, I thought nothing of it and assumed I was just not pressing the button hard enough.
Then a few hours ago, it just stopped turning on again after the screen went to sleep. If I power it off (long press on power button) it will reboot and the display is on again, and it works fine until it goes back to sleep.
After pressing the power button, the menu and back button light up, and If I hold the tablet in a bright light, I can see the images on the screen. So I know the LCD is working, but for some reason the back light won't turn back on after going to sleep. If it were a bad back light, then obviously it wouldn't work again after rebooting.
I tried a factory wipe - same problem
I did an Odin flash with MK1 stock rom - same problem
I suspect a hardware issue, but Ive been reading about this "sleep of death" that can happen with android devices. Fixes range from installing new kernels to replacing the device.
Anyone experience this or know what is going on?
**UPDATE**
A possible fix for this (and it worked for me) is to take the back cover off, disconnect the battery, and plug it back in again.
I have included pictures of what you are looking for.
When taking the back cover off, I was able to do it with just a credit card. Start at the charge port and carefully get between the casing at the cover, move around the outside, popping the outside clips (look at the photo of this). The inner clips will still be holding after you get all the way around, then simply work out the inner clips 1 at a time. It was a little difficult the first time because I wasn't sure how it was attached, but the second time I took it off, it was pretty straight forward.
When putting the cover back on, follow the same procedure. Start at the charge port, get those clips in, then work your way around the outside, careful not to push to hard on the inner part of the tablet, apply your force at the edges. once the edges are clipped in all the way around, simply press in the inner clips (you will feel them snap in)
I can post more pictures for people who want them. I might even make a short video of the procedure, all in all, its pretty straight forward. It's a relatively easy cover to remove.

These are the internal and external clips, you will see that the "hole" looking ones are the internals, they are in there pretty good, take care when prying them out not to damage the cover or clip mount
Interesting.. I just received my p600 today. I had an occurrence similar to this - I hope there isn't some flaw in them we are uncovering... I'll have to wait a week or two before rooting to see if it occurs again.

ya, good idea on the root. Im not sure how the warranty bit being tripped is going to play out should I need a replacement given that we don't even have custom kernels or rom's yet.
I am going to downgrade the firmware to MJ4 and cross my fingers. Wish there was a faster way to DL these other than slow ass sammobile lol.
Had the same issue on my 10-day old device during a flight back from the US to the UK which was highly inconvenient.
Anyway, what I noticed was that when opening the magnet cover or turning on from sleep, the tablet actually woke up (touch buttons lit up) but the screen backlight wasn't turning on (if I held it at a certain angle, I could see that the screen was showing the home page but just no backlight).
Another side effect of this was that, even after rebooting and having the screen backlight on, the brightness setting was doing nothing.. I could set it to auto or manual brightness and adjust the slider and it stayed the same brightness regardless. As with others, a factory restore had no effect.
In the end, given that I'm kind of boned for the US warranty living in the UK anyway, I just opened it, disconnected the battery connector, reconnected it and started it up. After that, no problem.. brightness and wake-from-sleep started working again no problem.

I am using the the bookcover also, wonder if the magnetic cover is somehow screwing it up. Im glad you said you opened it up to DC the battery. That was on my list of things to try! too bad there isn't a way to DC the battery with a USB jig. cross some wires or something.. as a EE, one would think I would know a trick that would accomplish that.. lol.
im downgrading firmware and going to do a full nand-erase with bootloader update, and see what happens
*Just noticed that my brightness slider also has no effect. This must be the indicator that the sleep of death has occurred

I removed the back cover, unplugged the battery, plugged it back in and it started working normally again. After playing with it for several minutes to ensure it was working (turning it off and on a few times over and over) I put the rear cover back on. But as soon as I had done that, the problem started again.
I removed the cover again.. unplugged the battery.. but this time, after plugging it back in, the problem remained. After a few more unplug/repluging of the battery and it not working, I decided to unplug the LCD, digitizer, and the backlight ribbon cables. I booted the device without these attached, let it boot fully, then powered it down, removed the battery connector, re-attached the ribbon cables then the battery, booted it again, and the screen was back to normal.
Ill keep playing around with this to see if isolate the problem, but it seems like there is something going on with the connectors, or some sensor/detector/controller getting "software stuck". When the screen is turned off, this sensor/detector/controller is either not getting the right information sent to it, or, it is has gotten stuck in some process it can't resolve (happens a lot in hardware engineering). It can happen when something shorts, and sends the device into a shutdown state (watchdog trips). The rear motherboard has A LOT of flex to it, and I had to push kinda hard on the rear cover to re-attach it. I wonder if when the back of the tablet gets pushed in just the right way, in just the right spot, it causes this screen issue to happen.
Either way, this is pretty unacceptable for a $600 device. The good news is that there is no warrant seal on the rear cover.
After use auto root. did you reinstall stock recovery?.

If you open it again, would you mind taking a few pictures of a disassembly process and the way it looks after removing the back cover?
How difficult is it to remove the back cover? Any plastic damage caused?

Already took em That was the first thing I thought of when I was taking it apart. I will try to get them posted soon.
Tablet turned on and off like normal yesterday and today. Not a single forced reboot was required. However, while taking notes today, I noticed a dead zone on the right side of the screen. Touch works fine there(with fingers), but the spen won't work. It just jumps over the area. The affected area is a vertical line from top to bottom.
Since I have not been using the spen lately, I can't be sure if it is a symptom of the sleep of death, or a result of removing the ribbon cables and not seating them properly when I reattached them. I'm going reseat the cables and see what happens.
I just got my Note tonight and have this same issue. I got it at Amazon and it came with both seals broken as others have found. Was surprised it seemed to already be on, when I hit the power button the buttons lit up but no screen. Grabbed a flashlight and could see the backlight wasn't turning on. Tried turning it off and back on, or so I thought, but no dice. I figured I had a bad unit and set up the RMA with Amazon.
I then went and stuck it on the charger and held the power button for a long time, and the charging screen popped up. Turned it on, seemed to be working fine until I hit the power button, and then the backlight wouldn't turn back on again until I rebooted it. I took all of the updates and did another factory reset, same issue.
Now, I also bought a smart cover. After taking the updates but before the reset I tried it, it'd shut off the Note but the backlight still wouldn't turn on when I opened it up. HOWEVER, after the factory reset, I opened and closed it a few times and it worked correctly. I then tried the power button a couple of times and it also worked correctly. For the record, my brightness controls DO work correctly.
At this point I'm not sure what to do. I _really_ want this tablet, and Amazon is out of stuck so I can only return it for a refund. I don't want to do that since I got it on sale and it no longer is.
EDIT: Also, I just tried closing my smart cover and hitting the power button with the cover still closed, and the screen DID turn on. So I'm not sure if that partially throws the theory of the magnet going out of whack out the window or not, since it should turn on even if the cover is closed.

I just checked Amazon and they have them in stock. Do you think maybe because so many people are getting replacements over and over they are just recycling them and selling them as "new?" Do you have the link to where people are reporting getting them with both seals broken? Thanks.

Amazon itself doesn't have the 32gb black in stock, only 3rd party vendors.

Hi Serinety:
Thanks for the diassembly picture. I believe you are the first one to show the inside!
If possible, do you mind showing pictures a bit more inside? For instance, I'd like to see where the WiFi and LTE connectors are. (They are both different connectors btw)
Many thanks.

Would be better to have full time access to battery in order to make hard reset ... or to have dedicated button for this purpose.

Temporary boot-loop solution to back up your files!

Disclaimer: I am just stating what worked for me, so if anyone's warranty is dismissed, or phone further breaks, it is not my fault.
Hey guys, so my phone started bootlooping about a month ago, but I have my warranty still so I am eligible for a G4 repair, (as well they agreed to fix my G2 from two years ago). Anyways, the problem is I didn't have some contacts, pictures, etc.. backed up so I needed my phone to function for about 20 minutes to back them up. I tried the freezing method, every button combination possible, even held the power button down for 10 minutes. Nothing worked. Until I found this reddit comment from a while ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3vsebk/retrieve_data_from_dead_g4/
The comment by.. uh... "Irapedyourcat" about heating the phone helped me. Now I used a hair dryer instead, and basically followed this video tutorial. It isn't the greatest, and one of the videos is 40 minutes long, but I skipped through most of it and you really don't NEED to watch it. He just mentioned some bumps you can experience and decently described the steps.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkMhaLryn-A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN6baDuozms
So I'll just go over the steps of what to do and what materials you need.
Materials:
- Hair Dryer
- The phone -_-
Steps:
- Take the battery out of the phone and be ready to put it in. (Keep nearby and away from the hot air of the hair dryer)
- Plug in the hair dryer and expose the back of the phone with the back cover off.
- Watch the time for about 3-5 minutes. Don't go over I would say 6 minutes.
- Slowly start from the bottom left corner of the phone, and move up to the top part of the battery hole. (Don't go over the buttons).
- Then from there move a little to the right, then move back down slowly. You want to leave about a pinky's length from the phone to the hair dryer.
- Just keep zigzagging until you reach the bottom right. Then go up to the top right corner, to the right of the camera, and heat that area for a little bit, definitely a shorter time than the bottom area. Then skip the camera and then move to the top left area.
- After you do that about twice, or for about 4 minutes, feel the phone. It should be really hot. Like enough to go "Ow!" Not jerk your hand away or it'll burn you hot but maybe a window of a car left in the sun in an empty parking lot for a while.
- Once you feel the temperature is right, (I'm not sure if this helped or not, but I did this process twice and the time where I did this the phone turned on for a longer period of time), focus your hair dryer solely on the 4 little gold things that your battery connects to. https://ibb.co/cKSnQa
- After you do this, turn the dryer off, and put the battery back in
- Start your phone, and once the logo shows up, plug your phone into the computer. (Or if you don't use PC, you can just use the phone and put it into a SD card, or use a cloud service. Personally I think the phone can stay on longer if you just control everything from computer but whatever works. If you DO choose to use a computer, make sure to click "allow" when it asks for access.)
- Back up away! If the back up is taking a long time and the phone starts to cool down, what the guy in the video did, and me too, I heated it with the dryer for about 5 seconds at a time, just on the bottom half of the screen and some of the sides.
One thing to mention is that the phone does get really hot. That's the point, it has something to do with "melting" the cicuit board and some connectors together or something??? I'm not really sure so if someone clarifies that, that'd be pretty cool. Anyway you will get warnings that 1) your phone is at a very high temperature and then 2) that if the phone gets any hotter the phone will shut off. (That's what happened when I heated it too much while it was backing up because the phone was starting to cool down so just do it for 5 seconds every minute or so!) https://ibb.co/nrfwJv
I'll mention again that this could work or could not work. This is pretty risky, I'm not gonna lie, but if done properly, you'll probably have a good chance of succeeding. The reason I'm posting this is because I kept thinking "what if I saw this right after my phone started bootlooping?", and it would have made my life so much easier if I found this way.(I've been without a phone for 3 weeks, just needing to send it in for repairs, but feeling that I could somehow manage to back up my files, but I didn't have a way). So I decided to not be lazy and write this. It's less risky than "baking" it, so if you're considering that, then try this first. Hopefully no one made a post exactly like mine because that would suck because I'm super tired right now but I hope this at least helped one person. Thanks and good luck!

Mi Max Prime, unstable (on MIUI v8.2.3)

Hello everyone,
i recently purchased Mi Max Prime (Helium, 128GB, India). without exploring the phone much, i updated the ROM to v8.2.3 at the first notification i got of update (which was soon after purchasing). since then, facing a myriad of issues:
1. random freezing - this issue was there even prior updating.....the phone would freeze when the OS would ask about app-permissions (to access contacts, photos, etc.); after updating, it has become less pronounced, but seems to have increased in playstore, esp. when attempting to download any app.
2. random shutdown - it would so happen that if i press the power button to turn the screen off, or even if the screen dims off after inactivity, many-a-times the phone would simply shut down. at that time, i have to keep the power button pressed for a longer time to boot the phone, than is normally reqd.
3. apps sometime take long moments to respond. happens sometimes even when flicking homescreens or when in settings.
all these have been happening frequently, making it a frustrating experience.
has anybody faced similar issues? previously i was thinking of taking it to the service centre, but then read some posts here wherein people had written that it ultimately proved futile, and changing the ROM to a custom one would be a better recourse, and that ROMs like PureNexus, RR, etc. are MUCH better than MIUI.
could somebody pls suggest about this?
TIA!
either flash a new official rom with full wipe Or try a custom rom!
Offical rom doesn't have any performance issues I think you better take it to service center.
Have the Helium 64GB on the EU rom, do experience some apps taking awhile to respond and on the rear occasion phone froze. But not to the point of it being a bother.

thanks for your replies.
as a prelim measure, seems sensible to take it to the service centre and ask them first. if that doesnt help, will then surely install a custom ROM. am lamenting for not having checked the phone earlier. i got it from amazon but because of some simcard-woes, i delayed testing the phone & had kept using my older phone for some days, and now amazon product-return window is closed. so no alternative other than taking it to the serv centre.
hi guys,
i took the phone to the service centre y'day. the reply i got doesnt exactly bolster confidence in me. i was told that the OS would've to be upgraded as you are facing software-issues. i then told them that i already have the latest global ROM, OS v8.2.3. i was then told that you downloaded it from the 'internet', while we at the service centre currently dont have this version. we'll be getting it in the next week here, & then you bring the phone to us, we'll re-install the said version through OTA, 'properly'.
now am highly wary if that'll help at all. what do you say? should i simply install a custom ROM now, or go there & give what i was told a try?

You naughty, naughty rascal! Love when you talk dirty about MiUI... Don't get this literally.
so as i was expecting, the service centre still havent got the global ROM v8.2.3 with them. wont waste time about this anymore. will test the phone for a day or two come the weekend, and then install a custom ROM. thanks for the replies y'all!

Mimax Helium Random Shutdown at 80+% Battery Charge
My phone shuts down randomly on a full charge and it all began when I sat down with the phone in my back pocket. The case curved and it just began behaving badly.
I bought a new aluminium back from eBay and power button ribbon because it did not power on when pressed many times. This did not help much, but it was cool have a straight shiny new case and fully functioning power button.
Annoyed, I took the phine apart and realized that the battery ribbon was coming loos whenever the phone was bumped ever so slightly because the battery was moving around in the phone. Furthermore, the screws holding the metallic plate over the main board had thread out. Thus, it's was not holding the ribbon in place. Note, you will know that it is a poor battery to main board connection problem if you apply pressure connection and the phone start when the power button is pressed and dies as soon as the pressure is released.
To fixed the threaded out screws, I place a dab of crazy glue into each screw hole. To apply pressure on the battery to main circuit boards ribbon connection, precut a small piece of cardboard and attach it to the back of the battery ribbon where it attached to the main board with a speck of crazy glue to hold it in place. Then quickly replace the metallic plate on to the main board with the screws before the crazy glue in the screw holes dry completely.
To keep the battery from moving around in the phone I placed a speck of glue from my hot glue gun on perimeter of the battery to secure it in place. I then realized assembeled the phone and gave it a full charge.
Realizing that the problem could also be related to an outdated rom, I downloaded the latest rom and flashed it. Then, I came across a firmware update project on xda at https://www.google.com/amp/s/forum....elopment/firmware-xiaomi-mi-max-t3741655/amp/ so I flashed that on to the phone too.
As of this posting, the phone has been running without issue for the past 48hrs. Hope this helps, because I was actually dreaming about smashing this phone with a hammer. Now I love it again ?

My phone shuts down randomly on a full charge and it all began when I sat down with the phone in my back pocket. The case curved and it just began behaving badly.
I bought a new aluminium back from eBay and power button ribbon because it did not power on when pressed many times. This did not help much, but it was cool having a straight shiny new case and fully functioning power button.

Got an interesting problem.

Hey there. I'm a bit new to this side of XDA. Honestly with how long I've been AWOL from this site nothing is familiar anymore. How time flies. Well my first post back in years couldnt be more unfortunate phone wise, I've had my Z2 for a couple of months now and as a mechanic it's been treated like all my others phones prior, rough. I've been locally recognized as the guy who has a new phone every couple of months because he can't not shatter a phone. An expensive hobby of breaking phones. Well luckily I didn't shatter my Z2. I just water logged it. Gotta change things up right? So here's where the interesting problem comes in, I let the phone sit in rice for 30 hours, switching the rice out half way through. It acted up like you would expect in the first couple of hours but then stopped. When I pulled the phone out I scraped the rice out of all the books and crannies and tried to power it on, to no avail. Dead battery I assume, so I plug it in. Charge icon pops up, a sign of life! How glorious. So I let it sit for a minute as I assume the battery probably dropped below minimum voltage when the LEDs were freaking out. Went back to the phone, held the power button and no screen, but "Hello, Moto!" So at this point I'm convinced the screen is dead, so I force it off with the volume down method and pry off the screen. To find what? More water. Good Lord. This phone is incredibly water resistant just in reverse. So I do the only thing that makes sense at this point, I remove the ribbion connector from the board for the display and put the phone back in new rice as 2 separate pieces. I then leave it in there for another 30 hours switching the rice halfway. Bringing us to now. I took the phone out, cleaned all the rice out of the 2 pieces and off the remaining adhesive and connected the ribbion back to the board. Plug the charger in, and again, charging logo. But then I hold the power button and the TMobile splash screen pops up! Then the screen goes dead and once again, "Hello, Moto!". But whats different is now when the boot sequence is finished I can interact with the phone and it works, shake for flashlight, enter my passcode (just by feel cause I'm good like that, ladies hmu), and the button responds with vibration. The phone is working but no screen. So at this point I'm sure, the display driver is done. I murdered it in cold daylight. So I shut it off and start looking around for new screens, in the midst of this I knock the phone and accidentally hit the power button, and it starts to boot up. T-Mobile spash screen, screen death, "Hello, Moto!", and nothing. Now that seems weird. Why would it work twice on the TMobile splash? So I decide I'll try putting it in fastboot for S&G's. Restart, put it in fastboot and the screen stays on. Beautiful and clear as day, all buttons work, everything reads fine, but, if I go to boot it or do anyother action than "retart bootloader", the cycle continues. T-Mobile, death, hello Moto, nothingness. Now at this point I'm okay with the phone being dead, it's fine, but I'm intrigued now. What would cause the screen to work just fine when in the bootloader and the TMobile splash screen, but die when it boots? The phone is very clearly working in the background. I logged in, used Google assistant, used the flashlight, pressed buttons on the dialer, all without the screen but with haptic feedback and audio. Could the graphical side of the main partition just be corrupt, or maybe the display driver is dead but the main board interacts with it differently during fastboot? I'm far from being knowledgeable on the hardware side of these things but I'm really genuinely interested in getting feedback here from anyone with an idea of what is going on. I'll post a video here in a half an hour or so when I finish up with dinner.

Well... It sounds like there is a short between the screen and the main board. It could have happened when you plugged it into power while parts were still wet causing a short to ground and frying a chip that controls display but not touch on the screen.
Best way I can describe it for you is if an ECU on a car got wet and shorted out. Everything works but you get an engine code for TPS sensor failure due to said short. (The ECU can't read TPS due to a short). That is what seems like what happened.

Well see I would think that as well but the screen does work. Just only in fastboot, and the boot logo.
I got the video here.
Fastboot is a pretty low level and most likely uses basic hardware. I mean really what is there to see but a simple background with some text. Once you load the OS then all the hardware and it's drivers into play. Have you tried booting into safemode? Ultimately you'll probably have to repair or replace, but there could be a slim chance that there's still a little moisture in there and it still has a short somewhere.

Galaxy watch active 2 Board and battery replacement

Hi,
the watch got into my hand. The owner said that a week ago they started randomly restarting and now they just restart. I can buy them very cheap, but I still don't want to waste money.
I'm wondering if there is any chance to fix this or what it could be?
Could flash the firmware be enough? When he came up with it, it occurred to me that an update came out for my watch3 about a week ago and the active2 was coming out at the same time, so it coincides. But he himself was not able to tell me if and what preceded the restart.
thanks for the advice
sorry my english (use GTr)
I finally took them. They are like new, beautiful and I would love to fix them. Does anyone know if the boot loop can be solved somehow? The watch cannot be turned on, it does not respond to the buttons. When I put them on the charger, after a while the display lights up and the boot loop runs. After a few minutes they turn off again. I tried to get to the boot menu but the button is not responding
i had them disassembled but no signs of water ingress
I got some very scratched ones for almost free. So what I'm going to do is replace the inside with the nice ones.
I just want to ask some advice. There is a thin silicone strap under the back, but the watch was also glued with something. What to use to ensure at least a little tightness? Or is just the belt enough? I'm only concerned with protection, for example when washing hands, or rain. They certainly won't get soaked in any way
Is there a way to get into the recovery mode?

Hi, I can't get into recovery. The watch runs in a loop when placed on the charger
