Notifications - Samsung Galaxy Fold Questions & Answers

I am not happy with the way my Fold handles notifications. Remember when Samsung used an LED for such purposes -- my Note 3 has one Leaving out useful features is not my idea of progress. If anyone has a good way to handle notifications on the fold, I'd love to hear it.

Could try notify theres a few apps like it

hmm..... i have 2 points:
1. why buy a device being fully aware that it doesn't have the feature you're looking for, and then complain about it on a forum?
if you're still using a note 3, just because you fell behind and got used to a specific feature, doesn't automatically make it a "useful" feature.
2. actually, it has progressed. its called always on display.
the notification led was a 1 trick pony. it could only light up your last notification color. the always on display will show multiple app notifications.
NOT ONLY does it show your notifications, you have a clock, a battery percentage, and even your calendar for the day, if you change the always on display face to that specific one.
if you have something against the always on display, i've love to hear it. i'm genuinely curious why anyone would choose a notification led vs. an always on display these days.

oh, i forgot to add, on the always on display, you can even double tap ON the notification icon for whatever app is showing, and it'll launch you right into that app.

You misunderstood. Firstly, I do not use the note 3 (which also sports a useful IR blaster) on a daily basis.
I was able to use the Note 10+ with an add-on to make the notification on the AOD easier to notice. I guess I should have asked if anyone tried any of the several AOD utilities on the Fold. I guess it will be a case of trying myself

[Q] Will Google be 'fixing' the LED notification light any time soon?

I'm glad that a Samsung high-end international Android smartphone finally has a good RGB notification LED, but the way it's been implemented in the Galaxy Nexus is pretty damn poor.
1) The blink rate is terrible. On my Motorola Milestone, I'd come back into the room and take a quick look at my phone to see if the LED is blinking. With the Nexus, I have to bloody stare at it for 10 seconds.
2) No customisation options. What's the point in having a white light for both my text messages and emails? At least Whatsapp lets me choose different colours I suppose...
Now, I know there are applications out there that can provide remedy to these issues, but this is another thing that I don't want to rely on third parties for...
So, my question is this: Will Google be fixing the Galaxy Nexus' notification LED, or will I have to resort to using Lightflow?
Its not broken. You're comparing it to a different phone that had an oem overlay. It's there for developers to utilize for app features. Now you can edit the code to make the blink rate faster just like the rom I'm running (bamf wookie) has that edited. But google will probably not be doing anything further than the way it has already been implemented.
good day.

I know you said you don't want to go 3rd party, but I think LightFlow might be one of your few options. I just set it up today, and can tell you that the "Very Fast" setting on LightFlow makes the LED blink every second. So far I am very impressed with the customization options of LightFlow and might even purchase the full version soon.

Compared to the hardware of the last Nexus device, the Nexus S, with no notification light, this is definitely an improvement.
It would seem logical to implement controls for the LED notification features in the Settings panel. From a technical stand point, the only downsides I can see to adding support for this feature into AOSP would be not all devices will support it.
As far as I've seen, and I could be wrong, the majority of LED control is performed through the specific sysfs structure setup by the kernel. Controlling the LED through this route require root access so if the third party apps control the LED w/o root access, I might be a bit behind the curve.
If you were interested in moving the ball along, all of the ICS source code is public being part of AOSP. Theoritically you could work on implementing controls for it in the Settings.apk AOSP file and send your changes to Google requesting they add it to their official AOSP repo.
In the end, I do agree. Adding controls for a LED notification light, when a notification LED is provided in the hardware, to AOSP shouldn't be *that* difficult.
Apparently this hasn't been a priority yet but hopefully now that the official Google device has a notification LED, they'll move in the direction of adding at least some simple stock controls for it.
Is there an official site for this aosp code? I goggled it but didn't knife which link is the official download site. Running GNex Sprint.
Sup Milestone buddy .
I've long since decided that Light Flow is literally the only way you can get the gsexy's LED to function the same way it did on the Droid1/Milestone. You should try it or at least try Galaxy Nexus LED (on Play, it's free) first.
install lightflow
I agree with OP. I know it's all about finding the workaround, but workaround's and third party fixes are not always the satisfactory answer. It would be nice to have out-of-the-box notification light controls.

[REQ] N9 lockscreen mod

Hey guys!
I recently sent my Nexus in for repairs, and borrowed a Nokia N9 from a friend to use meanwhile. Now I've got my Nexus back, and there's one thing in particular that I miss about the N9 - the clock and notifications on the locked screen.
If you haven't used or seen an N9 in action, this feature is really, really useful - and something I think could be ported to (at least) the GNex.. See attached images
When the user locks the screen, usually on other phones it just goes plain black. On the N9 however (because of the AMOLED screen) the screen is mainly black but with the clock still visible! It also shows small icons to alert the user of new messages and such. To avoid burn ins, the N9 changes the position of the clock and notification icons randomly. It also uses the proximity sensor to "know" when it's in a pocket, and then turns of the screen completely.
So devs, can this be done?

wouldn't this create burn in on the screen? Are you serious that the n9 screen never turns off fully?

Well, to be honest it probably would create burn ins if the screen were on 24/7.. But Nokia has (seemingly) thought about this! (And I have failed to mention it in the 1st post )

Not exactly the same but give it a go

Well, using the stock clock on ICS, you can set the phone into a very dim low power mode (as you mentioned). I am pretty sure the clock periodically moves around the screen to avoid burning too. It also hides the softkeys. You just need to tap the screen when it's displaying the clock overlay and it'll dim down.
I doubt it'd be viable for carrying around in your pocket due to the fact that your phone is obviously not locked in this state and it hides the notification bar so you don't have any visual feedback for notifications (besides LED flashing?). :/

Yes, the ICS standard alarm clock offers similar functionality.
As I wrote a few posts up, the N9 always displays the clock and notifications when not in a pocket (or when the proximity sensor is not blocked). But, if you take the phone and put it in your pocket it will completely turn off the screen - it would be a waste of battery to do otherwise.
Regarding the notification bar, the N9 also has icons on the lockscreen as any Android has in the notification bar - it's only showing a small SMS bubble under the clock if you have a unread text etc. etc. You wouldn't loose any functionality with a mod like this, only gain moar
Look at the attached pic in the first post to see what I mean

Yeah I get you, I'd also like this mod, I am quite often finding myself turning the phone on to get the time/see notifications so something like this would be schweet.
Would be an awesome mod. Gonna follow this thread n see where it goes

Thinking this needs to be seen again I'd love this so much, and I'll help out if I can.
NoLED is a nice software. It must be updated to hide the soft buttons as I can see now
My only concern is the battery consumption because the Android OS is not going to deep sleep mode if the screen is on which means the phone is always awake
Any ideas
This mod would be sweet. I had an old Nokia n95 and like that the clock was always displayed with the screen off.

that's a feature of noled and the most efficient way to unlock the phone. especially if you have noled show a clock at all times as well as with notifications. did cut my battery life by about 15-20% but with some tweaking of settings i got it down to only 7-10% which was acceptable for the added ease of use.

Notification LED Replacement Idea / Request / Question

So the notification LED was removed for god knows why for the first Nexus / Pixel device that I have owned.
I know there is some cool stuff that can be done with the OLED screen but I don't want to have to reach for my phone to check notifications and I really do not like the always on feature.
I tried Pixel Pulse and got the paid version at least someone is trying, was not my cup of tea.
I was looking for a way to add circle notifications to the bottom of the phone like the Nexus 4 used to have. Video for reference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEIOMPZUMmg)
Having this feature back again would be great. Anyone know of any apps that might be able to pull this off?

Light ring around front camera

Whenever I switch to selfie camera, I see light circle around the camera that shows up for 5 secs. Is it normal? I don't remember seeing this before ?
It's annoying .
I see a pretty cool effect when I switch to selfie mode... A quick ring of light for MAYBE one second it appears to spin around the camera clockwise once. Pretty neat! Thanks for making me notice that.
Yes its normal. It’s to remind you where the camera is. Cute effect...
It is not appearing on mine..
Would be pretty cool to use this as a notification for messages and what not

Woulda still been great if Samsung built this option into the software instead of having to get an app to do it.
Thanks though! I'll check em' out!

Got the update Yday. Really nice, shame there is no way to keep it flashing when the screen goes off
(i know there are 3rd party apps, Just yet to find one that works perfectly with a black screen and JUST the circle around the camera)

Lemme get this straight...Samsung released an update that allows us to use the light ring around the camera as a notification signal BUT only while the screen is in use?

It works with the screen on or off if you set it to always. But the notification goes away in a few seconds.
That's why I like aodnotify. It works with screen on or off and I can set the light ring to stay in until I clear it.
On my Note 10+ I do not have - apparently- the possibility to select "black hole"...??? I only have basis effects? I come from a Samsung S8+ and before S8 and before S5 - and on every switch I have used Samsungs app for transferring data to new phone.
On my S8s I never managed to get the blue light "running" around the screen - even though I used the same settings as my wife's S8...???
I have only selected edge light for the SMS app (standard Samsung) and I do not use it that much but I think I recall that the edge light actually DID run around when I first got my Note 10+ but now it doesn't... (Bixby related???)
But anyway- no black hole option for me...?
I got the "black hole" type via nice lock, as good lock is not available in my country

You need to go to Galaxy Store, install Good Lock app , open Good Lock app, select "family" and then install EdgeLightning +. With the updated EdgeLightning +, you will find "black hole" effect.
Good lock SHOULD be a pre-installed app but Samsung in their wisdom put other bloatware on that is MUCH LESS useful and left this awesome app in the galaxy store...
Not even really featured well...
I have only used my Note 10+ with the standard apps regarding this issue... Thank you for the new app-tip! I will try it at once ??

Question Notification light

So I don't know if it's on here or not but I came from a Samsung phone and so anytime a notification will go off it would flash a green light does the OnePlus 9 pro have that same feature or some type of light that could flash when a notification is on the device? Perhaps maybe there's some type of a magisk module that can utilize the camera ring around it to flash when there's a notification if it helps I am on a custom ROM. So I'm not sure if stock has it. Thanks.
On recent OnePlus phones, you'll find a function called Horizon Light (it basically lights the screen's borders when a notification is received), that is used for similar purposes, but there isn't a notification LED in the hardware.
I'm not sure if it is a function that is still in your custom ROM, but it is a stock ROM function.
Yeh, only aware of built-in horizon light , but it doesn't flash long enough to catch it....
Geez, how I miss the LED notification lights that older phones had.
Especially the ones that were multi-color so you could assign a different color for different notification types.

Technically, it wouldn't be impossible to recreate it with an app dedicated to modify the always on display features.
As AMOLED screens are basically tiny LEDs side by side, we could imagine a way to light or pulse specific ones to remplace the "missing" one. But it would be a trade-off, as those selected LEDs would be functioning and aging surely more quickly than the others.
There are a few apps out there that will use the AOD to create the appearance of a notification light or even continually flash the Horizon light bars and other custom lighting options however all 3 I've tried were glitchy and obviously drained the battery since it's using AOD to accomplish the notification light. Maybe if you're already used to AOD battery drain it wouldn't be so noticeable but I don't use AOD normally so the difference was very noticeable to me.

Yes, it's also a thing to consider, but I don't think the memory and power usage for only a black screen and a color dot would be that energy consuming. Did you notice a change that big when you gave a try to those apps?
look for notifybuddy on the playstore. works fine on my OP9Pro.
I didn't realize how much i relied on the notification light until it was gone. The AOD fits my needs, tho. Posted settings on another thread awhile back: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/horizon-light.4371367/#post-86085187
I may give notifybuddy a try, too
Would recommend this app. I've been using it on my oneplus devices last couple of year. There are a lot customizations too.
LED Blinker Notifications
i REALLY missed my notification LED (the last phone I had that had it was my old blackberry priv) then I got a smart watch and I don't care so much anymore
