Chances of rooting a T-Mobile LG G8? - LG G8 Questions & Answers

I'm in the market for a phone and was looking at the G7, G8 and V40. And for what I got 7 and 40 aren't an option. I saw the G8s rooting guide, and the KDZ firmware for TMO US are available, so potentially the guide might work. Or maybe open the possibility for a future root soon. I need to root to disable or uninstall or the bloatware including google apps that I'll never use and don't like having, mainly, and TB and couple other apps that need root. I'd really like one of those 3, coming from a V20 was gonna go for V40 but if G8 have higher chance of root then that'll do.
Thanks in advance.

The t mobile g8 especially will maybe never get root and the other variants will get it in a time span of 1-2 months. You can also easily debloat with adb or the package disabler app. Join the LG V50 telegram group and I can give it to you

Yeah, I am afraid that might be the case. Seeing as other phones have proved troublesome to root the T-Mobile variant. I would have no problem using ADB for removing some of the bloat. But some I prefer to freeze them and defroze them when I'm gonna use them. Guess I should just go for the V40 its so cheap right now.

Quick question about LG and Android updates!

Hi, I just wondered how LG is at upgrading the Android versions. Like do they come quick? Are they good and mostly bug-free? Etc etc. Thinking about buying the glorious G4 because it's beautiful and I need a new phone. Probably going to run custom roms tho, but if I choose not to I'd like to know how LG is at android-updates

I switched from Sammy note 1 to G2 then G3 and now have both G3 & G4. Never need run custom ROM B4. Only Stock ROM and Cloudyfa's Stock ROM. I just love the LG UX.
Now with G4 's UX 4.0 simply awesome. No lagging for me for I only have G4 for 2 days and no root. IDK what to tell you try it don't like it just return it xD. Even my 1 year old low end LG Gpad 7.0 V400 got Lollipop OTA update in April. What to complain when LG USA MOBILE send me a Brand New LG G4 H815 to keep.
Great story, but can you answer the question the Op asked? How quickly do LG put out updates, eg. how quickly did they update from kitkat to lollipop?
Yeah, I'm wondering because it took my Z3 about an eon to update from 4.4.2 to 5.0.1, and that I really did not like. But hopefully this is an easier device to fiddle with when it comes to root and recovery than my old Z3, which was a pain in the butt sometimes. Had a good experience with my previous LG Optimus 4X HD when it came to getting it rooted with custom recovery, but man that phone is so old that it just lags when you barely look at it.

How fast? I remember G3 is the first to get Lollipop b4 nexus. The leaked version was out earlier. Here the articles

True, but also keep in mind (stock) Lollipop for some devices is still FUBAR. For example t-mobile G3.
OP: In the end 90% of the delay in a device getting an update is not the manufacturer, Its the carrier. That's why things like Nexus phones and GE phones were able to get updates fairly rapidly. The manufacturer takes the source, compiles with/against their own custom code and a bit of testing and its done. This should likely take less than 2 weeks after source drop.
What takes so long is carriers with all their bloat (getting it to work) and also making sure they have locked you down enough to make them happy and to keep any lucrative government contracts they have that require a certain immutability of the phones core OS for security reasons. This part can take months. My kids LG Stylo is T-mo branded and the T-mo my account app still crashes all the time.

That's exactly why I always go for sim-free phones and avoid the networks/carriers - much better chance of getting updates sooner (although I appreciate the short-term expense makes this unavailable to some).
Unless you have a Nexus device, I wouldn't even hope to get updates. The G2 was slow as hell, and only received 1 update ever with TMO.
Updates from LG are really good and fast. I have G3 and I can not complain.
Great story
hopefully lg goes straight to android m
Depends on the device. In the UK no G2s have Lollipop yet. Not even SIM free ones.

[Q] I was thinking of upgrading to the G4 from G3

I'm on Verizon with a rooted LG G3 on 12B (KitKat because Lollipop was terrible) and I was thinking on upgrading to the G4 but there doesn't seem to be much going on as far as development.
All I need is to root the G4, Install TWRP, and enable the HotspotProvisioning.apk hack.
Can this be done on the G4?
Thanks,
-Joe

As of now, no. The good thing is root is basically guaranteed, multiple roots actually, meaning once one is patched there is a high probability of another one right after! (according to one of the devs working on this) and a medium chance of a bootloader unlock on the way soon, at least they plan to and there's a lot of good devs working on it so I would personally see it coming eventually. If I were you however, I would wait it off a bit and see what happens, there is also one more factor in play though. According to some other people the newest LG G4 updates will some how "disable downgrading", meaning disable the ability to downgrade your OS, not sure how this would come into play with an unlocked bootloader or what thats supposed to mean, maybe someone else can explain that to you better but from what I understand it just means it will make root/downgrading harder or impossible(downgrading impossible). My point there is in that case it may be better to buy one before that update becomes wide spread but hey, as stated, someone else could explain this better and correct me here if I'm wrong. Alsooo, with a non-root trick somewhere in the Q&A section of the VZW LG G4 forum you can bypass the "Pay us moneyz or no hotspot 4 u" Verizon gig and get the mobile hotspot tether thing via that without having to deal with the crap.

I have a link to that root-free hotspot hack in my signature. Keep in mind that it isn't working for everyone - still trying to figure out why. Worked great on my verizon G4 and my dad's sprint g4.
The G4 is a fantastic phone. I'd buy one up from Best buy right now as they are $549 and you get a $100 gift card for free. Also, if purchased before the end of July, you'll get a free second battery, external battery charger, and leather back. By purchasing sooner than later you'd also probably get a device that hasn't been updated yet - therefor reserving your ability to root when the methods are released in the coming weeks. The Devs have stated that they've found many root methods, so I would bet that you could still root even after taking (or purchasing a preinstalled) OTA update. Also, the anti-rollback code shouldn't matter once we have an unlocked bootloader and can flash our own ROMs.
I came from a rooted G3. In my opinion, it isn't worth upgrading or buying the G4. There are to many issues. Battery life sucks. The G4 is not that much better than the G3. I paid full price for the phone to keep my unlimited plan.
With all that said, I knew there were problems when I bought it. I wanted the free battery and SD card. I think the new promo is even better. It was killing me not to have the new LG. Would I do it again? Yep Will I buy the G5 with all its problems when it comes out? Yes.
Thanks for the replies. I love the G3 but I like to have the latest stuff. Sounds like I need to wait for more development on the G4.
Thanks,
-Joe
FoxFi also works on the Verizon G4.

What is taking so long for G4 to get root??

I really want the g4 to get root access. I even have the H815 model but its a United States model. Is there any rooting methods for my model yet? I tried the LG Dev website and said doesnt support it yet.

There are developers activly working on it. Be patient, LG hopefully will allow bootloader unlock soon. Untill then, no root method is currently available to us.

There are some threads already about this, but to answer, it could be lots of factors. Some I read and some I made up
-Devs don't want to post and provide support for a 119 steps guide.
-The method they found is so risky that even doing it successfully has high chances of bricking the phone.
-The root exploit might reveal a concerning security hole so exploitable by malicious Apps/hackers that LG is gonna patch it right away.
-They're making a KOOL App/Scrip with some extras and a nice UI, capable of overcome any possible issues. Like survive the most hostile OTAs
-They might want to sell that ^ App.
-The App could be ready but some of the involved developers are not happy with it.
-They could be waiting for a $bounty$ that justifies the time they have spent on the project.
-The method they found does not qualify for that bounty.
-They have a life, Vacations and a nice Summer. Why to spend it in front of a monitor?
Then how long does it usually take for a stable way to root on a new device?

Depending on the device it can take months. For example when i was developing for the Samsung S3. The USA Variant was rooted in around 1 month after the phone came out.
But the Australian one. Diff File Partition and had LTE took almost 6 months extra time to root because of the changes.
So just be patient buddy, you will know when it comes out. It's one of them things like a game bug you are waiting on. It takes time to Test it, source devices, package the software, approve the package. and test them on many phones from around the world. This all takes time cobba.
None of us want a pre-Release that could potentially BRICK our device. I didn't pay 800$ to buy a bookmark you get me?
So just :chill: ~ Narcarsiss out.

In simple words bounty. Sooner, you raise it, earlier you get it. Just joking. I think, we all G4 users equally wants the Root on our device, nobody is an exception, sorry!
How about just use your phone. Root comes when it comes.

People need to seriously stop asking this. It's getting quite annoying and I'm not even a Dev so I can only imagine how annoying it is for them.

Devs don't usually wait for bounties to go up.It's probably more annoying on their part to hear constant whining than waiting for more money (which never pays out that much anyways). Any root method they have will qualify for the bounty I posted. The unlock bootloader will be the only part that might not qualify.

My guess is when the g5 comes out we shall have root. If root is a must this is not the phone for you. I would head on over to Samsung for your needs or nexus.

P_Toti G3 Tweaksbox - Will there be a version for the LG G4?

Sometime last year, user @P_Toti developed a root app specifically for the G3, which he had done previously for the G2; that let us tweak things specific to the G3 so we didn't need to install other Xposed modules that weren't directly aimed at the G3 etc. However, we still needed Xposed for it to work.
Did anybody use this app on their G3? I paid for the full edition and was unable to live without it, absolute essential app. How many would be interested in seeing one for the G4, and do you think it will be created?
@P_Toti, please feel free to comment in your own time.
I used avidly it and I did pay for the full version also.
I paid for the G3 version as well, it was fantastic. I would do so again for the G4.
it will come but first hes waiting for unlocked bl and working xposed. So understand i his words..

Any Idea on root/unlocked booatloader?

I haven't had an LG phone since the VX9400 and this one has me interested again. I was reading on LG's website and it looks like all of their phones' bootloaders can be unlocked according to this https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev Is that true? Will it work on the Verizon variant?
Just registered and saw this
The following devices support unlocking the bootloader:
• LG VELVET: LMG900EM/LMG900EMW/LMG900EMX/LMG900D for the European market
• LG V60: LMV600EA for the European market
• LG V50S: LMG850EMW/LMG850EMWX for the European market
• LG G8S: LMG810EM/LMG810EMW/LMG810EAW for the European market
• LG V50: LMV500EM for the European market
• LG V40: LMV405EBW for the European market
• LG G7: LMG710EM for the European market
• LG V30: H930/H930G for the European market
• LG G6: US997/US997Z for the U.S. open market
• LG G6: H870 for the European market
• LG V20: US996/US996Z/US996D for the U.S. open market
• LG V10: H960A for the European market and Android M (Except France)

• LG G5: RS988 for the U.S. open market
• LG G5: H850 for the European market
• LG G4: H815/H818P for the European market
Unlocking the Bootloader is only supported on selected devices.
I did just find this but still a bit skeptical https://www.mobilewithdrivers.com/unlock-bootloader/lg-wing-5g-256gb-8gb-ram
Does this phone have similar Hardware to The Velvet?
If so could something like this be used for the wing?

In developer options?.. If so, mine doesn't.
Verizon (USA)
Yes in dev options, haven't really done much with the one i had, it was a demo phone, but i did manage to get like 90% normal functional, restart doesn't change anything back to demo, can go into all options (dev mode) etc. Just no functional android market, install apks works though, no lock screen 50% battery limit. Well sold it now anyway.
I stay far away from verizon, in my opinion they are closest to iPhone as for being controlling.
The WING LG LM-F100 is not yet on the list.
I also have an oem unlock toggle option. I have a tmobile version, but I am using a mint mobile sim in it and it works just fine without ever having to use the tmobile unlock app (somehow).
That being said bim getting ready to see If I can get adb to recognize my phone in a sec. I'll let y'all know if I figure out anything to unlocking the bootloader. Wish me luck.
Edit:
Update: Here are some instructions to unlock LGs bootloader. Figured I'd leave this here for others to see if they're eligible.
LG Developer
The official developer resources for LG products and platforms.

Best of luck. Where are you located? I've read this is possible for UK version. But I have heard that it is not possible for US Virgin Islands. Hopefully you're able to figure out something good.
I'm from the US and I have a LOT of different simcards and swapping between them I have managed to change from the T-Mobile boot logo to an LG one. I've also managed to access both fastbootd and recovery (using a Linux setup) and I'm thinking we can sideload magisk fellas. Do you think while in recovery if we download an update from SD card and select the magisk22.zip file, that it could work? I'm this close to trying it myself but I just really don't want to brick the phone
I'm from US. Oem unlock is available in my dev tools. I'm using a sprint sim. And my phone model is LM-F100TM and no longer shows the Tmobile boot logo and now shows LG as the boot logo. (My stock apps have also changed too)
Being able to Root this thing would be awesome. Sounds like you're much farther along then anyone else I've heard of. Keep it up!
I had the wing in my hand today... wow, I almost bought it to replace my OP 7Pro. Then i googled how to unlock it and then this thread. Its sad. LG should make it possible to unlock ALL devices, because they close the mobile business worldwide :/
Nothing is happening with this phone until the Bootloader is unlocked as currently fastbootd doesn't allow anything to be done that I could find. Hopefully LG does a mass unlock allowance with their unlock tool near the end of the 2 year support life of the Wing and their other phones, or someone who fancy's finding a way to unlock it themselves grabs a Wing and takes up the challenge.
While I used to need Root for a few things, these days I am pretty much only wanting it for full Titanium Backups and the occasional tinker. For now though, I was actually able to transfer and do everything I needed without root while setting up my Wing and so far, things are going pretty good considering LG's past. This current OS/Launcher are rather good and leaving me much less wanting and more enjoying using a phone again as something fun and different and I couldn't be happier.
I do hope a bootloader unlock does arrive sometime in the future, and I also would reallllllly like if a few Devs for things like keyboards especially, would at least cook in the Wing 2nd screen SDK into their boards to support the small number of us, but overall this thing is still one heck of a device and is vastly better than bending plastic screens IMO.
@IM0001
I am definitely in the same camp as you. And couldn't have said it better myself. I used to root all of my phones and would not buy a phone I could not root.
Root (on this device) "would be nice to have", but I don't feel constrained without it. And this form factor definitely suits my style more so than a folding screen. The Wing is SOLID!
So if I patch a boot.img with magisk and use magisk to flash could that... possibly... Work?

Most unlikely. Because the first step is to unlock the bootloader, no?
Has any progress been made in this?
