To root or not to Root - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Im running the latest V 10 build. It is generally ok but battery life and esp speed could be alil faster. Ive done the usual tricks like turning down animations to make it feel snappier but it still isn't quite there.
Is it worth rooting atm? Are there roms that are actually better than Stock?
Also unlocking the bootloader will wipe everything, is there a way to get around that? I'd like to keep my data/ root and make a backup...
Cheers.

There is no way round wiping your data when you unlock your bootloader, you need to wipe dater for twrp to be able to access the internal memory. I'm still on stock tho with a custom kernel and I'm happy but not sure if you would be. Also with the custom kernel I lose about 1% a hour on battery when not in use.

So you're rooted with a custom kernel? As I understand it's not possible to install the kernel without root...

Yes I use elemental 3.00 kernel, no you don't need to be rooted as you flash the custom kernel through twrp but you do need your bootloader unlocked and twrp.

just rooted need help/advice

So i just did the 3 step root and im at the clockwork mod recovery screen
There is different stuff to choose and i have no clue what to select?
Can someone please direct me to what to do next this is my first android phone and i have no idea how to load a rom or what i should be doing next
thanks in advance
Well are you hoping to flash a custom ROM? If so, you'll need to download the ROM and copy it to the root of your SD card. Then when you boot to recovery, choose the options to wipe data, wipe cache, and then install a zip from SD. If you want to back up your phone, choose the Nandroid option.
You got pretty far without knowing how to complete your journey.
so if i click nandroid that will back up what my phone is set at now?
what is a good custom rom to use ?
I would like to have wifi tether but do not have 4g and probly wouldnt use it very often, i read something that there was a stock rooted rom? I also do not want to lose my camera?
Start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Evo_ROMs
Then just read up on the dev pages/threads for the popular ROMs. I use Fresh 1.0.1 with the netarchy 3.7.3c Fresh-compatible kernel (haven't switched to the new one that just came out today). Camera works great, wifi tether app is built-in. If you want that, download both (just search here), put them on your SD card, reboot to recovery, and flash the ROM, then the kernel. You don't have to flash a new kernel or even radio if you don't want to, but everything is installed the same. Usually reading a couple of pages for each ROM will tell you if there are an problems. Other options are the stock rooted ROM, DamageControl, Baked snack, or there are a couple of new ones for Froyo as well, but they have some features left out (like 4G, wifi, MMS . . . depends on the ROM).
Nandroid (or, inside Android, ROM Manager) will make a system image for you, saving everything exactly as it is. To restore, boot to recovery and choose the correct options for that. Should be pretty self-explanatory.
Always wipe data and cache before flashing, and it's a good idea to search Google for Cyanogen's recommendations for recalibrating your battery (it's on his wiki). Just don't flash a stock, non-rooted ROM or any OTA updates that Sprint tries to push on you. Always get something that the devs here say is safe for rooted phones.
Hope that clears some things up for you.

[Q] how do I nand unlock?

I really have a bunch of questions. I don't know how to tell if I'm nand unlocked, but I think it might be the reason I can't flash a custom rom.
So I was on 2.2, rooted using the method on xda. Everything went swimmingly. I'm now on rooted stock 2.2 rom. Wireless tether doesn't work, which I assume is because I need to flash a custom kernel (but I saw some people saying the more recent versions of wireless tether stopped working on the evo). I also can't seem to flash a custom rom, which I think is because I'm not nand unlocked. I used unrevoked forever and am s-off. I used amon ra recovery I guess. But I also installed whatever with rom manager.
So I'm wondering, how do I nand unlock? Is it just a full wipe including the dalvik cache? Do I always have to do a full wipe when I flash a rom? Is there a quick and easy way to nand unlock? It looked like I could full wipe with the dalvik cache from recovery. What's a dalvik cache anyway? And about flashing roms, am I going to have to flash antennas and stuff every time? Are all roms pretty much compatible with all the custom kernels? Or should I check and make sure to check all the compatibility for that stuff? Is there a kernel that will both make my wireless tether work and break the 30 fps cap? And what about improved performance and battery life?
So many questions!

http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Evo - I use the pre-8. I just changed today and the wireless tether now works.
Thanks, the pre-8 version works great. That's awesome.
I'm still wondering about the NAND unlocking, though. Should I do all of step 3 listed here? Am I going to be installing some other version of recovery over my version of recovery? Is that a bad thing? Should I only do part of this stuff? Which part is actually performing the NAND unlock? Is it the part where you flash PC36IMG? Is it the part where you do a full data wipe?
Follow all of the steps from 3 on. Your recovery will change, but just download rom manager after you are done, it will flash clockworkmod or RA recovery for you.

[Q] Quickest way to install a custom rom on unrooted .587 Arc S

hello, I have an Arc S LT18i with official 4.1.B.0.587 rom and locked bootloader.
I would like to switch to a custom ROM (e.g. Jelly Sandwich), that is supposed to be pre-rooted and doesn't require an unlocked bootloader.
Which is the fastest way to do the switch? Do I have to root my current rom first or this is not necessary?
It is my undestanding that to install a custom rom I need to install a recovery (CWM) first. If this is true, are there ftf files that include a recovery?
thank you very much
Slow, but fast
FTF files with included cwm aren't existing, forget it
To get CWM on your stock rom in order to install jellysandwich you have to get root access
To get root access you have to flash .562 kernel, you need flashtool for this, and then root with doomlords ics rooting toolkit
After you have CWM installed via x-parts, an app you can find in play store, you can put jellysandwich on your sdcard and install it from there
I recommend for a locked bootlocker this way in CWM:
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format cache + data + system (in mounts and storage)
wipe dalvik cache
then install rom
If you've got problems, write it in the thread
wow, that was a quick answer!
I'll try to do that and tell you how it goes. Just for information, would it be easier if I unlock the bootloader first? I'm going to unlock it eventually anyway.
I've no xperience with unlocking bootloader, so i can't tell you advantages of a bl unlocked rooting process, excuse me...
I really appreciate your help, but unfortunately I couldn't manage to make any rom work, I tried jelly sandwich and ultimate hd and always got stuck in a bootloop.
The biggest problem is that every time I had to reinstall full .587 fw, then .562 kernel, then re-root, then restore .587 kernel, then re-install x-parts... it took hours just to get back to "normal".
I surrended and unlocked the bootloader. This opened a whole new world.
In a fraction of the time I was able to install a kernel with cwm, and succesfully test several custom rom afterwards... not only they worked, but I could flash a new one in minutes, without worrying about root etc.
Just to share my experience...
there's a specific thread in sony official forums about this and its really easy

[Q] Help with installing custom rom

Hey guys,
I'm new to the Xperia Arc development and need some help with installing a custom rom. I've done quite a bit of reading but still can't figure out what is wrong and why it's simply not working.
So from what I gathered the steps to ensure a successful flash are:
Firstly flash a stock rom via flashtool ie LT18i_4.1.B.0.587.ftf
flash LT18i_4.1.A.0.562_Kernel > root the device > flash back to LT15a_4.1.B.0.587_Kernel
Then now that the device is rooted, I need to install a recovery such as CWM via RecoverX
So, so far so good as I can access CWM, stock rom works fine as well
So then next step is to unlock the bootloader
pretty sure this worked, as when i tried to unlock it again, it said it failed as it was already unlocked
Now flash a custom kernel, in this case i flashed the 146 FXP CM kernel
This also seemed successful as I was presented with a custom splash screen
So then after custom kernel is installed I enter recovery, wipe the cache and reset factory settings, format the data system and cache as well as wiping the dalvik and battery stats.
After, I installed the custom rom zip file, in this case it was aokp_anzu-ota-eng.kxp_build5 and then google apps and then reboot.
So my problems begin here.
My phone seems to be stuck in the boot process (sometimes), on the "initiating swagger" splash screen and it goes crazy. I've tried flashing this rom with other kernels (fusion 3.9) and sometimes it actually loads up into the rom. But the rom is extremely laggy, applications freeze and close and the wifi never works
So my question is, is there any steps or procedures that I am missing, not doing right or in the correct order?
I don't think it's any hardware issues as wifi works in the stock rom, and it's fairly smooth and fluid.
Also, is there a better way to flash roms so that I don't need to do this entire process of flashing a stock rom, rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing recovery every time I want to flash a new rom? And when I flash a custom kernel first, then flash a custom rom that has a kernel inbuilt (cm10) does the custom rom's kernel replace the one i just flashed, reason for asking is that the instructions say to flash the custom kernels and then the roms, but yeh just hasn't been working for me so not really sure how to do what.
I'd really appreciated any help or insight!
Thanks

Thanks! I've read your guide (what I based my flashing on) and it seems consistent with what I have done, on the surface of it anyway. If you think I missed or overlooked something, would it be possible to point it out?
If your boot loader is unlocked it's as simple as this...
1. Flash kernel
2. Wipe cache etc
3. Install ROM
...I always reboot before installing anything else as I've found it can break the installation of the ROM.

As ExpirienceD says, just one more thing flash kernel modules if you need to.
So:
1.Flash kernel
2.Full wipe data/cach...etc...
3.Flash ROM
4.Flash kernel modules

[Q] Best way to fully wipe, and install newest CM? (Currently on older version of CM)

Hey I've been reading conflicting information about this, a lot of which was posted more than a year ago, so I wanted to make a new post just to see if there are any ways that are the most popular/easier now...
I'm currently rooted and running CyanogenMod M2. My phone has been having lots of issues no matter what ROM or Kernal I'm running (just battery life issues and just general slowness).
So I bought a new higher capacity battery and looking to just start my phone over fresh, completely wiping the phone's "SD" card. My goal is to completely wipe the phone, install the newest CyanogenMod and a new kernel.
I've heard two more popular ways, one would be to just relock then unlock the bootloader again which would completely wipe it (I'm confused exactly where that would leave me after I unlocked the bootloader again.. what ROM would it be currently running and would I be rooted, etc).
the other is to just completely wipe it using the option in Clockwork Mod Recovery, but I'm not sure how to install a new OS after I just wiped it since the .zip for the new CM would have been wiped when I did that.
Just reflash factory images through the provided scripts by Google - as you may know, they're available for Linux and Windows, then reflash a custom recovery, reboot. Let it boot once, don't setup Google account now; copy your ROM of choice + gapps if needed (refer to instructions on first post of the ROM thread), custom kernel, whatever. reboot to recovery, factory reset, format /system, flash ROM, kernel, gapps, reboot. Wait for it... Done. This is a clean flash. Setup your device.
