Rooting J6 with binary u6 - Samsung Galaxy J Questions & Answers

I'm trying to root my j600G which I recently UPDATED to u6. If I flash TWRP 3.3.1.1 I get 0mb internal storage so I can't flash magisk zip files. Is there any other way of installing magisk that doesn't involve TWRP what should I do to to flash using TWRP

Cant mount /data in twrp after update to Oreo

Hello everyone,
i just installed the new oreo update from oneplus. everything worked just fine, but i lost my root with magisk.
i still have the original recovery and just boot twrp via fastboot when needed.
but after the the update i dont have any "decrypt storage" option in twrp anymore.
how can i mount my /data partition in twrp and how can i install magisk again?
same problem here ... waiting for help
You're probably using an older version of TWRP that can't mount /data on Oreo ROM.
Just download either Blu_Spark TWRP or Codeworkx TWRP.

image format?
you have to flash Magisk via twrp custom recovery. Download the latest Magisk . zip file from the official site , then flash it with twrp recovery. When you reboot to system install the Magisk manager app, you can download it again from the official Magisk site
I thought the normal Magisk install process was not done via TWRP?

That's the only way I've ever installed Magisk on this phone. You need to install it after TWRP (or re-install) because the TWRP installer removes Magisk from the boot image.

Yes but not necessarily.
Flashing a ROM-Update will also flash a new boot.img, and boot.img also contains the Recovery Mode.
However, Xiaomi.eu for Poco F3 has Nebrassy's TWRP 3.5.1 integrated.
So if you have Asishoth's TWRP 3.5.2 before the update, Xiaomi.eu will replace it with Nebrassy's TWRP version 3.5.1, which is slightly older.
If you want your TWRP to persist, select "Inject TWRP...", or you can flash TWRP manually after the update.
Edit: And if you had Magisk Root before update, you will have redo that. You will have to backup the boot-partition using TWRP, rename the backed up boot.emmc.win to boot.img and patch it with Magisk, rename that file back to boot.emmc.win and restore that boot partition using TWRP.

No don't worry.
Yes the size is normal, because it's a full Recovery ROM, which are for both Clean-Install and Updating.
There are also Incremental ROMs which are small and only contain changes since previous build and thus can only be used for updating, but you only get such ROM update files for Official MIUI ROMs, not Xiaomi.eu.

You can install Magisk by downloading Magisk.apk from that GitHub page and renaming it to Magisk.zip and flashing it in TWRP.
That's easier than having to patch boot.img

I don't know exactly either, but App Cache is definitely one of them, and some files in phone storage...
Here's a DiskUsage app, might be helpful:

Question Magisk is not installing

The magisk apk, when flashed in TWRP flashes as normal but the app does not show up in the ROM, and the phone doesn't get rooted.
I had this problem on both ArrowOS and Syberia OS now, and I clean flashed both times directly from MIUI.
Can anyone help me out with this?
Install the magisk app
Rename magisk.apk to magisk.zip (only change the last 3 letters) and install it from TWRP-recovery.

It didn't work either, when I open magisk app it shows this -
Download Canary version of Magisk (23001) from Github: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/topjohnwu/magisk-files/canary/app-debug.apk
Rename app-debug.apk to app-debug.zip and flash it with TWRP

Other method is patching boot.img with magisk manager. You can find some tutorials with google. Extract the boot.img from ROM.zip, put in on internal memory of your phone and patch it with magisk manager app on your phone.
Than flash the patched boot.img with adb or TWRP. You need an extractor tool to get the boot.img from the rom.zip.

I am using a custom kernel, will that change the process?
You need to reflash the custom kernel again after flashing the patched boot.img, but first check if your phone is rooted. (check in magisk app or install a root check app.)
The boot backup that I took before I flashed my custom kernel is the one that needs to be patched right?
If this isn't the case, can you guide me on how to get the boot.img? I only see payload.bin in my ROM.zip .
Okay, thank you for your help everyone
I ran into a different problem - when I install the patched boot.img, I get magisk but then I boot into TWRP and flash TWRP and my custom kernel, and I lose my root.

You have to patch the boot IMG with the TWRP already flashed, our phone doesn't have a recovery partition, so it's saved in the boot partition and installing Magisk from TWRP deletes the recovery, here is a good tutorial:
TWRP + Root
Hi all. Hope you are good and safe from Covid-19. If you like TWRP as your recovery and want to keep root access as well, I am going to show you how to do that. Because if you take the stock boot.img and patch it via magisk, you will lose TWRP...

Question TWRP not detect storage

I'm flashing TWRP version from official TWRP website for poco F3. Successfully flash temporary and make it permanent using flash this TWRP version.
Boot up to stock miui (im not flashing custom rom yet), work fine. I want to flash magisk, but TWRP wong detect storage or the magisk zip. Anyone can help?
Official TWRP doesn't support Android 12's Encryption yet, that's why /data partition appears empty.
You need to use unofficial TWRP "skkk": https://dl.akr-developers.com/?dir=skkk/TWRP/A12
