How to successfully update from Android 9 with TWRP, Root (magisk) to Android 10? - Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Questions & Answers

Hello!
so I read all the threads regarding android 10 and mi a2 lite but i didn't find a proper solution or guide for the following problem:
I am on Stock Android 9 with unlocked bootloader, TWRP and Magisk Root.
Now i want to update to the v.11.0.4.0 Android 10 Update, but i want to keep root working!
Is there a way to do this?
If yes, please tell me how (i'm not a pro in flashing, so please explain in detail )
EDIT: i dont mind if i loose TWRP, i just want to keep root and android 10 working
thanks in advance!
stay safe and stay home
Alex

Also interested in a guide for this.

Yes. It's complex because of TWRP.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/10-0-4-0-to-10-0-7-0-ota-keeping-magisk-t3916863

Thanks for the answer, i already saw this thread but as I already said I'm not a big Expert in this topic, so that guide in the thread is too complex and short for me (and for other most likely too...)
Maybe you can explain it more precisly to us?
I would be very greatful for this!
Or if you know a way too archieve what i want but loose twrp and data... I wouldn't mind. I dont Need twrp and my Phone is New... So
Thanks in advance!

Alex

You can't do it simpler. Mostly because you've got to get back to stock for the OTA.
You can do it different. Get the fastboot. Flash that (don't erase userdata). Then install Magisk and TWRP again.
Not every release gets a fastboot but 11.0.4.0 did so you have this option.

Can you explain this more for me pls?
- What exact files do I need?
- what exactly should i do with these files? (flash with terminal, TWRP, Slot A, Slot B, etc.....)
- is it relevant which version of Android 9 i have?
you would help me alot, if you explain it in detail so that i can do it.
I already tried in android 10 unlocking bootloader and flashed the "disable force encryption" but got stuck on booting screen.
Pls tell me how exactly i should do what, and i will post my results
Thanks !

Alex

Recomendations
Hello,
I just updated from Android 9 stock ROM, to Android 10 with a custom ROM.
I followed this two YouTube guides from the same user:
How to root and install TWRP:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy9Z_NN_7Tg&list=LLm7cWm_1QXORlLa5XeTETUw&index=12&t=365s
How to install custom ROM(In my case I installed Evolution X with Android 10 following these steps):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0pcmA_ew-Y&list=LLm7cWm_1QXORlLa5XeTETUw&index=13&t=173s
**Advise**
- Use the same files and versions that he uses, If you use/do something different, you are going to have some problems.
What I'm currently running on my Mi A2 Lite:
- Evolution X ROM(Android 10) -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/rom-evolution-x-3-3-t4014685
- Nitrogen Kernel r3 -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/r1-nitrogen-kernel-mi-a2-lite-t4011019
Everything has been very stable at the moment(1 week and lots of gaming and restarts and tests), so I feel fine sharing this.
Best,
delokt

Install instructions in that thread. TL;DR Run the flash_all_keeping_userdata script to upgrade to the version you downloaded. 11.0.4.0 is what you want.
You have Magisk and TWRP. Install them the same way you did before. Go read their threads if you forgot or use the last part of my guide.

Hello Friends, i have good news, i successfully updated my Phone to android 10 and keep TWRP and magisk!
I did the following steps:
- clean install of fastbood v.11.0.4. Android 10 via Mi-Flashtool
- powershell adb: fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-dees_troy-daisy.img
- TWRP should open on Mi a2 lite. go to advanced and activate adb sideload
- powershell: adb sideload twrp-installer-3.3.1-dees_troy-daisy.zip
TWRP should now be installed.
Then i tried a reboot system and got into the welcome screen, so it booted.
What i did next is, the magisk v20.4 zip file move to sd card or internal storage of the device and flash it trough TWRP.
DONE!
now your phone should reboot to system. It now has Android 10 and magisk installed and working!
Hope i can help someone else with this.

Hi
Anyone tried rooting latest Pie builds with Magisk or SuperSU? Cannot manage to make it working. I'm on ZRKN from this topic (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...f-sm-g965f-t3867627/post78170460#post78170460). Please share some tutorial. Thanks.

You must flash the oreo Bootloader BRJ6 (only Bootloader BL!) with Odin, restart into system. After that go into Downloader modus and flash the TWRP Image with Odin.
Works everytime on my S9.

Thanks for suggestion. Please tell me, do I need to flash dm-verify disabler, antyroot etc.? Or BRJ6 Bootloader, TWRP and Magisk only?

Im pretty sure you will need dm-verify still then twrp then magisk
Is here anybody who rooted pie build? Please share with us files you use to complete this task with some short tutorial. Now I'm waiting 7 days to unlock option appear again. As markyc25 said:
1. downgrade bootloader to Oreo BRJ6
2. unlock bootloader & go straight (without full reboot) to download mode
3. flash TWRP (twrp-3.2.3-0-starlte ?) with ODIN & go straight (without full reboot) to recovery mode
4. do not allow modification ?
5. wipe data
6. flash No Verify Encrypt zip ? (which version ?)
7. flash RMM Bypass zip ? (which version ?)
8. flash Magisk (latest 18.0 build ?)
Could somebody answer my question marks and post working files? I don't want to wait 7 days more
I'll appreciate your help.
after 14 days someone did anything? a guide to root pie with attached files???

ultimate / universal root / twrp installation guide?

Hi everyone
Sorry I am confused; there does not seem to be an ultimate universal root / twrp installation guide for the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite phone (my son's phone) in 2019.
No offense intended but all these various posts on the topic just help to confuse people!
I managed to unlock the bootloader but can anybody please tell me what is the easiest / user-friendliest way to install twrp (which version?) and root the phone so that I may proceed with flashing LineageOS afterwards to get rid of all the bloatware.?
what about these partitions A & B?
Thanks a lot in advance

I did some extra research out of XDA

It depends on what you want to do.
Root doesnt need TWRP, just Magisk. There's a guide on here.
Flashing custom ROMs needs TWRP. Each custom ROM has specific instructions.
There's no one-size-fits-all solution for this phone.

Hi @a1291762 & thanks.
This is what I am saying it is confusing; I have been thru a few phones (samsungs, LGs, lately Xiaomi...)
and the process was first install twrp then root and then you could flash roms
I know when you flash LineageOS, you get root included in dev options so from your explanations I will look how to flash LineageOS but currently I'm struggling installing twrp as you have seen in my other post

My last phone didn't have A/B or encryption or use Magisk for rooting... So for me everything about this phone was new and different.
I started with stock (android one means I didn't immediately want a custom ROM). Then added Magisk. I added TWRP after edxposed caused me bootloops (magisk manager CLI can run from TWRP). I haven't installed a custom ROM yet but I've got a custom splash and bootanim.

Android 10 root/twrp

Hey guys. I accidentally (don't ask) installed the update for Android 10 from 9 stock and lost my twrp and root. Is there any way to at least get root back without having to reinstall everything?
More details will be needed to help. Bootloader unlocked? Guessing yes since you say you had twrp. Check the guide section for root instructions.
Yes I have it unlocked. I looked at the guide and it looks like I will have to reflash the stock rom which I'd like to avoid.

Since, twrp is not available yet for Android 10 (Q), I suggest one of the three following options:
1. If you have to re-flash the Pixel 3 XL Android 10 (Q) Factory image, do #4 'keep data' in this Guide.
2. If your Pixel 3XL has the latest Android 10 (Q) Factory image installed, just do #9 A. in this Guide to root.
3. If you are on a Custom ROM follow the OP Instructions in the Custom ROM thread to root.
Apparently I have the Sept update (QP1A.19711.020.C3) but I currently have no available updates. Am I good to just use your step 2?

Yes!
Why not do #1 update your Pixel 3 XL to the February Factory image (QQ1A.200205.002). You will not lose your data (need to reinstall anything). Then do #2 to root.
I guess I can do it that way. Thanks.
Edit: Do I need to use a custom kernel? I don't really require one. Also in magisk manager, theres no way to select the canary channel. All I see is stable, beta and custom.

Some people are reporting that issue. You can set the custom channel to canary/canary debug manually. Check the magisk thread.

Kernel/Kernel Managers are optional. #10 B ,in the guide, updated.
Hey so I patched the image and flashed the file, I'm stuck on the screen with the google logo and progress bar. Also, does it matter that I used adb reboot fastboot to get to the fastboot menu? I noticed it said fastbootd which ive never seen before. It seemed easier to do it that way.
Edit: Ive decided to try flashing another rom.

For flashing boot.img you should reboot bootloader. Fastboot is a separate thing now for system files to be flashed. Boot, bootloader, and radio are flashed in bootloader, others in fastbootd.

None of the rooting guides work?

Can anyone write an up-to-date guide on precisely what I need to do to install TWRP on a global-edition, fully updated (MIUI 12) Note 8 Pro today?...
There are three different guides and none of them work. I'm not interested in custom firmwares or anything else besides TWRP. I just want to install TWRP and magisk.
We are in the same boat...
Edit: N/A
Are you able to unlock your bootloader?
Also, pay really close attention to the warning at the top of the TWRP downloads page for your device.
WARNING: This device hard bricks really easily for unknown reasons. Restoring device without spending real money is impossible as of now. Don't flash TWRP unless you are an advanced user who knows what he is doing.

Additionally, there are a lot of weird quirks all over the place, which makes your device... non-optimal for modding.
Let me know if you really want help with this.
I really just wanted root and didn't realize you aren't supposed to use TWRP for it on new phones (especially this one.)

It's not that you're not supposed to use TWRP. It's that you need to know what you're doing.
That device you have is very easy to brick. I'm just making sure.
If you do only want root, that is very easy. First: do you have an unlocked bootloader? Second: exactly what software version do you have?

Installing Magisk from recovery is a legacy option and no longer recommended. The recommended method of installing Magisk consists of patching the boot image using the Magisk Manager app and then using fastboot to flash the patched boot image to the phone.
Installing TWRP is then as easy as using Magisk Manager to flash the TWRP installer zip, then reinstalling Magisk using direct install.
In order to retrieve a boot image to patch, you need to download the update you are using to a computer, then use a tool like Payload Dumper to extract the boot.img.
Kind of complex but it's the only option if installing TWRP without it bootloops you.

I don't own this device so I don't know any guides. The process is the same for most devices and the scripts will automate it for you.
Like I said, find a software update for your phone (search "miui 12.4.847.37586 OTA update zip" or similar), use Payload Dumper to extract a boot.img, transfer it to your device, install Magisk Manager and use that to patch the image, download the patched image to your computer, boot the phone into fastboot and flash the new boot image, and you'll have Magisk.
From there, go to the official TWRP website and download the "twrp-installer" for your device. Use Magisk Manager to install it. Then direct install Magisk to keep root.

Hey!! Fun fact, you don't need to use payload dumper for that! Download the "Full ROM" with "Type: Recovery", and unzip it. Inside there will be a "boot.img". That's what you patch using Magisk Manager.

Question Are the newer US ver still allowing, rooth with TWRP?

Seeing a lot of issues with Android 11 and 12 unlocking the bootloader and applying root. Is now not a good time to upgrade or should I wait for a boot image?
Not quite sure what you're referring to, but there are zero issues with unlocking the bootloader or rooting your device...
I can't speak for TWRP. I have had issues with it the last few versions so I had to make due without it. If I am mistaken about having twrp on the OP9 Pro on the newest LE2125 c61 update, I'd be interested.
Anyway, my response is mostly to address your question regarding root. Here are the steps that worked for me.

If you want to install any add-ons, Reboot to Recovery, then when your device reboots, click Apply Update, then Apply from ADB, then adb sideload filename.zip those packages in sequence. (GAPPS or Magisk for example)
for example for magisk:
download the newest magisk apk version
after download, rename it and instead of .apk do it .zip
go into revovery and click Apply Update, then Apply from ADB
command is : "adb sideload Magisk-v2X.X.zip"
you must exchange X for your version.
Boot images gets patched
please note that I am not an expert, that is just what I found somewhere and use since then.
if you need more information you could also check the install instructions for lineageOS to get to know some basics: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/lemonadep/install
