How to make my wired xbox 360 controller work with fire stick 4k? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've just received my fire tv stick 4k, plugged it in with my otg adapter (with ethernet and usb ports), tried to use my xbox 360 controller but it doesn't work. With the same setup but with my non-4k stick, the controller worked fine. The controller works fine when using it inside of the steam link app, however, that's about it. I checked the keylayouts, even overwrited the existing profile for the xbox 360 controller, but it still doesn't work. It seems that amazon removed wired controller support at the same time as removing their own controller support. Is there a way to restore this functionality? The fact that the controller works inside of steam link makes me think that it's possible.

Amazon removed the game controller support fo make terrible and useless
You want to fix the Xbox 360 controller support:
Unlock/Root (follow the steps carefully): https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/orig-development/unlock-fire-tv-stick-4k-mantis-t3978459
Fix Dualshock 4 controller (similar as Xbox controllers): http://www.aftvnews.com/fix-ps4-dualshock-4-button-mapping-on-the-fire-tv/[

I already rooted my device, and it's not a keylayout problem, which the fix in your link is for. The keylayout was already there, and overwriting it with one I found somewhere (probably identical) didn't change anything.

Xbox controller?

I've been reading that the new Transformer Prime supports Xbox controllers. I'm rooted with Overcome 2.something and want to know if I have this ability already. I also read that people have been using a USB dongle that Microsoft sells but I'd like something that is already built in to work. I also have a PS3 controller if that'll work, although I prefer the Xbox controller.
HDMI out and an Xbox controller = big screen NES!!!
since the xbox wireless controller uses a custom wireless protocoll, you can't use it without the dongle. You can use a wired xbox controller though.
I also prefer the xbox controller, but the PS3 controller is better suited for this. Since the PS3 controller uses bluetooth, you can buy a app on the market called "Sixaxis Controller", which allows you to use a PS3 controller over bluetooth with the tab. It's really awesome
EDIT: I also fine the PS3 controller better suited for emulation, because the dpad is in a better position for this.
is there anyway to do this without root? i read somewhere in 3.2 reenabled controller support for 10.1 i have a stock tablet and don't want to root unless i really really need to.
So, just to check, will the Xbox wireless receiver USB dongle work with the tab?

Wondering the same thing. I tried to connect the dongle to my Tab but my controller wouldn't connect to it (just flashed the green light, searching but no connection it seemed).
Is there a way to make the Xbox360 controller work if you connect the dongle to the Tab (or without it for all I care, just want it to work )
I just bought the 30 pin to USB and so far haven't been able to get a wired 360 controller to work but I am running stock so that might be the problem... If I were to root and get like 3.2 or something would this work?

I just did this, although I haven't tried it yet. Not sure what they show up as when connected though? Going to test it right now
Edit: Blah, the only wired 360 controller I have is a third party one, it showed up but I'm not sure how to use it. I tried the "USB/BT joystick center" app and it wanted me to make a driver by selecting bits of input data directly .

Pick up a WII controller - cheaper and closer to the old school NES experience )

Amazon Fire TV Stick and the PS4 Controller

Has anybody else had any luck pairing a PS4 controller with the Amazon Fire TV Stick? I saw that with the Amazon Fire TV you hold share and power, and you can then pair them. On the Stick everything seems to go about the same, except then it says 'Unable to pair' when you select Wireless Controller.
Hey i'm having the same problem. I don't have the Fire TV but have read something similar to what you said. If you figure out a method plz let me know.
Same here

I tried sideloading Android's settings.apk - and even then it was a no go. Maybe part of their plan of selling it for $20 was counting on some sales of the $40 controller, so they don't want us using other controllers with it anymore.

I also tried with the settings apk. My problem was that the controller would not even show up in the Settings.apk Bluetooth menu. On the other hand, it showed up in the Bluetooth controllers options but did not connect.
Other people have had success connecting the Ouya controller thus I think its not that they don't want ANY 3rd party controllers, its just that the Bluetooth driver and/or hardware they're using is different than the Fire TV. Which is really sad because the ONLY reason I bought the Fire TV stick was because I read PS4 controller works out of the box with FireTV.
Same issue for me and I'm really bummed. Any other things to try besides the settings.apk? I have a feeling this is a cut cost hardware issue.
same issue
I have just spoken with amazon and according to them the PS4 controller is not compatible. I too saw an youtube video where someone was able to pair it, if anyone has a solution to this issue please let me know, I really don't want to wait for the playpad pro that is optimazied for amazon since its back ordered
I finally got it to pair, but the performance is pretty terrible, you can see the process here: http://youtu.be/jF3ExA3qzbc (no root required) to keep this from being a 'shameless plug' I'll post the brief instructions, so you can skip the video if you want.
'adb shell' into your fire stick
Get your mac address with this command: settings get secure bluetooth_address
Download and install sixaxisPairToolSetup-0.3.0
Connect your controller via usb to your pc, run the tool, and change the master address to your fire stick's address
Put your dualshock4 in pairing mode and scan for bluetooth controllers with your fire stick
As soon as "wireless controller" shows up on the list DO NOT SELECT IT.
Turn off your controller by holding the (ps) button
Select "wireless controller" on your fire stick
Turn back on the controler
It should now be connected, and it will be greyed out in the list.
if it did not connect try the pairing process again, but this method worked for me on the first try.
[/LIST](the youtube video is more detailed, and has all the links, but with this post and a quick google search, you should be able to find everything you need)
(this is a copy of a redit post I made, but I just put it here, so you can find it as well)

I don't believe so, the ds4 acts as a generic bluetooth controller,
the ds3/sixaxis dose not.
but feel free to try, I do not have any with me at the time, so I can not check.
have there been any updates to this? the Settings.apk is not working for me, it closes out when I attempt attach a bluetooth controller. I am trying to connect my ps4 controller through bluetooth for a lag free experience. So far after connecting it I get a ton of lag on the controller.
the steps given by BOBdotEXE in this thread worked for me it even works the main amazon screen too its not working for all games but seems ok with the emulators though

my lag isnt that bad at all tbh, i can play sonic 1 no problems, i can play nintendo emulator no problems, i think the lag may be due to the distance from the stick to the controller, my distance is about 2 metres from the stick maybe just over, if you live in a BIG house with over 5 metre distance then yes there would obviously be lag
If you need an alternative controller I have a thread for that Here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/aftv2-best-compatible-apps-accessories-t3269267
I haven't managed to get the ds4 paired via Bluetooth as yet but whilst trying I connected it to a powered usb hub which is connected to the stick which is rooted and has OTG enabled.
It worked immediately wired.
As soon as I pulled the cable though the stick rebooted. But if your desperate, rooted and have an OTG cable you can connect your ds4 to you fire stick.
FYI My old wired xbox 360 (afterglow) didn't work when that was connected.
Hello all. Sorry to bump this ancient thread but its the first google result when looking for help. So i had problems using my ps4 controller on my firetv myself as it appears amazon has cut support for game controllers on firetv. Lucky enough there is an easy fix.
Simply download and install Easy Fire Tools onto a smartphone.
Easy Fire Tools - Apps on Google Play
Install your favorite apps on FireTv and other android devices
play.google.com
Then download and install Bluetooth Pair
Bluetooth Pair - Apps on Google Play
Bluetooth pairing - automated. Simply turn on Bluetooth and connect!
play.google.com
Then just sideload Bluetooth Pair app to firetv and use it to connect to game controller.
This method works to where you dont need to pair the remote every time you want to use with firetv. Simply turn on and it will connect.
Cheers!
I'm having the same issue. Although I do not own a Fire TV, I have read something that sounds similar to what you have described. Please let me know if you come up with a solution.

[Q] XBOX 360 Controller

So, I seem to be the only one not able to get a 360 controller to work with my factory Fire TV. I've tried the MS wireless dongle and wireless controller and a MS wired controller. Neither respond at all. What am I missing here?

Does the wired controller work on a PC? What firmware version are you using?

after buying the microsoft wireless controller you must download and run pc software to a pc to sync the 360 remote to the dongle. once it is synced and working on the pc you can unplug the dongle and plug it into the firetv usb port. as a note, when conected to fire tv the 4 led's on the controler flash in a circle as if not connected but it actually works.
Yep. I've tried syncing it first on my pc. Both the wired and wireless work on my pc....but not the fire tv

Does a USB keyboard work on the Fire TV (just to make sure it's not the usb port)? Have you tried rebooting the Fire TV?
I assume it works, I dont have a free keyboard lying around. When I plug the wireless dongle in the light lights up and when I plug the wired controller in it lights up for a second, then the light goes out..and will not come back on.
I ordered one of the cheap 8 buck wireless dongles for the 360 controller. It quickly detected the my controller on my pc and paired up. I moved everything over to the fire tv.. Does anyone else find that the controller is very hit or miss on games? I have 3 games that say they will work with either the fire remote or a gamepad.. Crossy road, Unpossible, and Robotu. Robatu is the only one that actually works once in the game.. When out of games, the xbox controller does fine navigating evertying within the main Amazon interface. Anyone else?
Bumping.. can anyone with an xbox controller confirm / tell me if mine's just not working right- or is it also hit and miss for you on games that support the game controller?

The 360 controller is incompatible with KOTOR. It seems to work at first, but the d-pad is non functional which eventually breaks the game. At least you can sort of play it, though; I've had other games be completely unplayable due to the main menu not responding to the 360 controller's input.
Bottom line: The 360 controller is NOT fully compatible with the Fire TV. Amazon claims that it works (and it sort of does) but it's mostly just another example of the half-assed state of the Fire TV OS and software.

Using up to 4 Xbox 360 controllers

[edit]this should probably be moved to general
This has probably been said in other forums, but I found this xbox 360 controller receiver through watching a youtube video

Amazon Link

Just hook it up to the Shields usb, click the button on the receiver and the controller to sync, and just like that you can have 4 other controllers for multiplayer games.
I haven't yet figured out how to get the xbox 360 controllers LED to stop flashing
I used to use one of those with my laptop to play emulators. The controllers never do stop flashing. They are working correctly, but they just flash the whole time. Always did. However unless you are super OCD it's probably not a big problem.

Yes. That only happens with wired controllers.
If you use a bluetooth controller it works fine with NSTV controller (only tested with a Xiaomi gamepad). The only problem is key mapping... I can´t use L and R buttons.

If you don't mind a bit of extra work, and your Shield is rooted, you can buy a non-Microsoft adapter for a quarter of the price. You need to make a few changes to the /system/usr/keylayout/ folder, but it takes no more than 5 minutes. I paid just £4.75 for my adapter off eBay with free delivery.

Hi all,
Did anyone got this working? I have a xbox360 wireless controller and an Nvidia Shield remote controller but am not able to play Mortal Kombat with both controllers simultaneously... ?
I actually played Rocket League with the Nvidia Controller and 3 wireless xbox controller. It worked after I started the game with the Nvidia controller and then connected the wireless receiver for the xbox controller. I was so happy that it worked!
But then I realized that all my other games - which have co-op gaming - do not support this! But rocket league proves that it is technically possible...
Did anyone got this thing to work for other co-op games?
This thread has put my mind at ease a bit. I connected one 360 pad with the wireless dongle and was really annoyed that it was also Player 1 like the Shield Pad. The flashing light was also odd. I have some more 360 pads though so will try for 4 player this evening
It's so stupid: we can play Bombsquad with one SATV controller and one Xbox360 with Microsoft adapter, but it doesn't work on Trine 2.

Tried to connect Xbox 1 controller to my SHield (2017), but unfortunately no dice.
I want to use more than one Gamepad at the Nvidia Shield (2017).
I can stream games from my desktop-PC via GameStream in GeForce Experience to the NV-Shield. This works fine, but not for Multiplayer games like Duckgame for example.
I tested connecting 2 XBOX360 Cable –Gamepads: They both work, but they both control player one.
I tested 2 XBOX360 Wireless Controller with the Microsoft dongle: Both gamepads work but they all control player one.
I tested XBOX One Wireless Controller with the big Dongle: The controllers doesn't work at all.
I tested XBOX One Wireless Controller (Bluetooth): Controller works but only controls player one.
I tested all combinations from the different controller including the Nvidia controller, but all controllers only control player one.

Wireless 360 Controller?

I've read many posts about not being able to properly utilize the wireless Xbox 360 controller with the new Fire TV 2nd gen. Most that I've read were either never commented on again, or the individual fixed it by disabling use debugging.
I've disabled USB debugging, I am using the official wireless receiver and controller, and I have been unable to pair my 360 controller with this fire tv 2. I have tried before and after root, I've tried disabling stickmount, along with force-closing any 3rd party or unnecessary apps I've side loaded with no success.
Has anyone managed to pair these? If so, did you have trouble at first but fixed it by doing something very simple? What steps did you take?
Edit
Seems I missed one thread stating disconnecting the Ethernet port seemed to allows the 360 controller to connect. Not ideal. Guess I'll just stick to limelight nvidia game stream.
yes, disconnect the ethernet port only use wifi then the 360 controller will be ok.
Yeah that would be my post lol

I think all you need to do is plug in a 4 port USB hub into the USB port on the Fire TV. Then plug in your 4 Wired Xbox 360 remotes. The controller light indicator should turn on each remote letting you know which controller they are (1,2,3,4)
You can then use this for various games/emulators etc.
Working !!??
