Still a great buy today June 2020? - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Hello, I am wanting to buy a smartphone that is as complete as possible in all aspects and this LG G8s is a great option that I am seeing.
One of my doubts is the Software, in many reviews they kill it for it, is it so bad?
Do you still recommend it or would you buy another one at the same price today ($ 400)? The only two that call my attention against the G8s are the Huawei P30 and Xiaomi Mi note 10.

$400? I would buy a g8 off eBay for around $300 (make sure to not get an at&t one or Verizon)

The price is the only one I get in Argentina, I can't buy on eBay.

If you don't care about updates, the software works out of the box. You do not have to restrict, disable, deactivate applications. Everything is working properly.

The ONLY thing this phone has going for IMO is the price. I got an ATT version for $230 and don't feel ripped off at all. If I paid $400 for it? Yeah I'd probably feel ripped off.

Hi, how are you? I tell you my experience, I have had the LG G8s ThinQ for three months and for now no problem, except as they said above, the topic of the updates because it has not yet been updated to Android 10 being high-end of 2019. But someday it will arrive for sure . Beyond that, excellent equipment, supports any application and game without problems or lags. Great screen, perfect audio, beautiful design. I am quite satisfied except for the updates because I really like modifying the system (modding). I bought it in Argentina together with your LG W7 watch.

I got a Verizon G8, it's been updated and everything to Android 10, has desktop mode, beautiful screen, great cameras, it's fast, battery life is good. The LG G8 is very under rated.

It has a lot more than that going for it. Top of the line specs, ip68, wireless charging, SD card, the last flagship with a headphone jack and a duel dack for fantastic sound. 2k screen, what more you want from a phone?

I just want a smooth experience. You're right, wireless charging and water proof are a nice feature that I've used but my essential phone was way faster than this phone. So many hitches and slow transitions with the software. Ok Google detection going in and out. Camera being so slow to load often making me miss what I was trying to take a picture of. The list just goes on and on. The software just sucks

How is it not an option then? If you have an exploitable firmware version

I have a G8 through Xfinity and I think it's pretty great. I have always had phones that could be rooted and ROM'd, but I don't really miss it. The quad dac is awesome, it's fast, every game I've tried works great, and I get updates all the time. I just got one today. G820QM520i. June security update. I think even at $400 this phone isn't a bad value, especially depending on where you live.

You can root though. But since you've done all the updates (I'm assuming the one today was may or June patch), you can only do it if you had a kdz available for your model. But I'm pretty sure all the qm ones do, so go for root if you'd like

Buy the G3 now?

I have been rockin my Note 1 with vanilla Jelly Bean on it since it first released, and I am looking at getting an upgrade now. The G3 looks really nice (I will probably get it on AT$T), but then I heard of a possibly better G3 version coming out? So I am wondering, should I buyt he AT$T G3 now, or wait for the better version?
I think personally it's up to your personal choice. You might need to see it and test it in person. I came from the note 3 and don't miss a thing. Well except the stylus as I wrote a lot of notes and stuff. Speed and stuff like that not very noticeable. Lag might present itself, but that's because this is a brand new device. Overtime it'll go away. Design is pretty sexy. Specially the white one, camera is awesome. Speaker is loud. I would get it, so I did. Lol

I have a note 2. I'll definitely look into getting the G3 even if you buy it straight out its a lot cheaper than Samsung devices
At the price of $50 with 2 year contract, that is a no brainer for the quality of this device on launch!

Through today its $99 at best buy. You might be able to get the $50 gift card but it doesn't officially apply to the G3. I had to talk to a manager last night when I picked mine up. He wouldn't give me the $50 off, but allowed me to get $50 in accessories (when they are available) instead.
I'm coming from an S5, which, besides the camera, I didn't care for. Their new version of TouchWiz left a LOT to be desired. Its taking some getting used to with the G3, but I love it so far.

The screen maybe screen on note 3 is quite beautiful already in my opinion, also maybe the interface and lg apps. I do like LGs interface over TouchWiz, I had both Optimus g and g pro, Beauty shot on lg is better I think, great for pro pic haha. Note 3 is easily worth $400+ and the G3 is about 570 without contract from att

Tempted to upgrade to different phone?

I can't be the only one thinking about it with the lineup in 2015. The S6 Edge is sexy as hell but there isn't enough bang for the buck. HTC M9 is not even a contender this year (honestly HTC, you need to step it up). LG G4 sounds promising so far, although if LG somehow manages to screw something up in the specs/software, it's a long wait til the Note 5 and I'm not a huge fan of Touchwiz. I want to upgrade but my G3 is still pretty solid and I don't want to jump down below 5.5(ish) so I'm in limbo.
Anyone else thinking of upgrading? If so, which phone is tempting you?
No thinking about it, I will be getting the normal galaxy s6 next month. In my opinion you cant beat samsungs amoled screen and the exynos processor sounds amazing. Plus I like the idea of a fingerprint scanner over knock code now that it is touch not drag. I can live without removables, never needed to replace a battery and with 64 or more internal I wont need a sd. The G3 is a good phone but it already bores me, first phone I can say that about within the first year. I'll probably get some hate about this but my iphone 3g kept me happy longer. Sure that was my first smart phone back in 2008 but still... It was boring ios.

I agree on the G3 boring me part. My HTC DNA kept me interested longer than this phone did, for whatever reason. I was seriously considering jumping to the S6 or S6 Edge but I went to go check them out at Best Buy and neither of them amazed me. Sure their build quality is better than previous generations but nothing "wow"ed me and from what I hear, the battery life leaves much to be desired. Why Samsung went with 2500mAh, I have no idea. I can definitely live without removables too but not with a battery that small.
As much as i want to upgrade to the s6 edge i think i will hold off and see what LG has to offer. I like the G3 and have grown to like the buttons on the back of the phone as well as the knock to wake and sleep. Plus the g3 is the perfect size for me and the s6 is a tad smaller so ill wait for now.

The poor battery is from wake locks, the exynos processor Is 30% more efficient than the snapdragon 810 and the amoled screen takes much less power so after the wake lock issues are taken care of it should last just as long or longer than other flagships coming out.

The rumor mill is saying the g4 will be bigger. Personally the g3 is as big as I want to go with phones.
All in all we all have different tastes and the s6 is the flavor I'm digging right now. I guess we will see if I still think it looks tasty in a month.
Absolutely no Samsh_t for me whatsoever.
No root on Z3 stopped me from buying.
I may consider M9, but I'd like to see what G4 will be first.
Camera is a big thing for me and after having the Nexus 5, HTC M8, and a Samsung S5.... I am sticking with the G3 for a while longer. Lots of people talk about how great the Samsung S5 camera is, but I did a side by side comparison and everyone said the G3 pictures were the best. For the S6, I guess we'll see how that camera turns out. Plus, it's going to be hard to root.
Samsung is ****ing bloated all to hell and back. G4 looks like it could be much better than the s6.

You regret switching from the M8 to the G3? What do you like better on the M8?
And I agree with @dakpluto that the G4 sounds like it could be just as good, if not better, than the S6/S6E. Over-hyped phones in my opinion.

Honestly, my M8 was less laggy and just overall performed better. I know it's backwards, but in my experience, it was true. That and there's WAY more development for the HTC flagship phones on XDA than the G3.

I definitely agree on the development part. For whatever reason, LG G3 D851 had steady development but never exploded like my previous phones and seems to have dwindled now.
Thankful for what we got though!
Still loving my G3 on CM12.. Running great for me. As far as the S6 & M9 are concerned neither are worth the money (to me) to upgrade, and I even have an available upgrade. Ha. I bought my mint G3 non-contract with clean IMEI from a buddy for $275. He said it was too big of a device for him. I can't really justify an upgrade right now with the current offerings. S6 has Touchwiz (pardon me while I puke), antiquated home button & capacitive keys, no micro SD, and anemic battery. The M9 just didn't do it this year, and there's no word on a GPe version yet anyway. Safe to say I'll stick with my "Nexus 5.5" for now..

I'm actually grateful that it hasn't. Summer is coming and like many of you, I've spent more time then I care to remember flashing 3 different ROM's a day. I'm glad I don't have that issue anymore honestly.
I have the G2, and think I might upgrade to the G3. The G4 is the only other phone that has my interest also but won't be sold to probably late May. Plus, the G4 will be already on Lollipop and doesn't have an older KK bootloader to flash twrp on and might be stuck. Unless bump gets updated to work on the new Lollipop bootloader. What you guys think?

I would put down money saying the g4 will be bootloader unlocked on T-Mobile just like this g3.
It's no question for me. The G4 will be mine by pre-order. I have owned 1 Samsung phone and have had 5 Lg's including the G2 and 3 so it's only right to get the 4. Plus all of my other electronics are Lg so they sync up seamlessly.

Here's what I mean. The G3 on Lollipop can get root now. This allowed us to to modify the aboot with the previous kitkat version where we could bump the boot.img and recovery.img. This is only necessary if you want to flash custom roms, etc...
When the G4 comes out, it will come with Lollipop out of the box. It will probably be able to get rooted also with the latest exploit we have for root on Lollipop. But to get a custom twrp put on it to flash custom roms probably won't happen and will stay locked down on any carrier untill a new bump is developed that will work with the Lollipop aboot.img. The G4 doesn't have a previous version of Kitkat to do the hack that we do both on the G3 and G2 to make bump work.
My hunch is rom development on the G4 will not be possible until an exploit is found. Not sure we can put a G3 KK base aboot.img on a G4. Probably make it a brick.

[Q] Expectations of US G4 root/unlocked bootloader?

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.
I'm in the same boat as you, but on at&t. I am planning on buying the G4 tomorrow. I think root will be here before too long; jcase has rooted the at&t variant but hasn't released the method, presumably because it is unsafe. I figure the worst case scenario is I get the G4 and wait it out, if no root by fall, sell the phone and buy the new Nexus 5 or whatever they'll call it.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

If you have any other questions about the device or how various apps or things run on it feel free to PM me and I will gladly answer any/all questions you might have.

It's not just the carriers either. They told me they have no plans to unlock my 815 TW version that has no ties to any carrier either.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

I see.. Then go for OP3T, it's a really good device with tons of custom rom.. I never use OP3T but i have OP3 before, but i swapped it for LG V20 because i can't live without SD Expandable...LOL
Btw, if you can't live without expandable memory like me... Getting a Huawei P9 or Moto Z is the best alternative ( based on your list )..
Why not keeping the G4?
Buy a new battery and thazs it.
There is no improvement on the mentioned devices.
With some debloating and tweaking the G4 is an awesome device.
Edit and with 35$ you can add wireless charging

And then what? To wait for another bootloop? To be 20 days or more without a phone?
It WAS a good phone,for 20 months,but no thanks...
The sellprice for used G4 is too low.
Its just a simple effort use calculation.
And well yea probably waiting for another bootloop, if it happens
And you save a bunch of money which you can spend elsewhere or save it to buy this years flagship next year.
Maybe LG G6?
That would be worth the upgrade.
Wait for the LG V30. Hopefully it still has a removable back
Who the hell counts with months after a year ? It's like moms saying her baby is 74 weeks old wtf

No it's not going to have removable back since it is also a glass designed like G6.... LG already moved on from having a removable battery..
This is why i'm having a LG V20 instead of LG G6 as an upgrade from my rusty LG G4..
LG also ditched the secondary display for LG V30 which is too bad for me because the secondary screen is actually quite useful for my daily usage..

Other than no root im kickin the g5. I love it.
I am a G4 fan. I have been using a blacklisted H811 as wifi phone for a year (12 months :silly. I even got an LG RMA number to fix the boot loop problem, in the hopes they would change the imei when they did it and I could maybe get it on cell service. It wasn't boot looping and I could probably still send it in but i heard they come back with the same imei so i haven't sent it in. I would really love to get it on a network, i really enjoy a lot of the features that is has.
I liked it so much i decided to get a V10 refurb (just a few days ago....72 hours or so ) and it seemed very nice to me, it was in really great condition but not a big step up from the G4, the small screen was ok but I am older and my eyes are not what they used to be, the small screen is...small. I didn't really think i would use the fingerprint scanner but it isn't a bad feature. I had it rooted a couple of hours (120 minutes...Ok, I will stop now ) but there is not a lot of developer action and i don't know how to create my own roms, even the Lineage guys are not doing much with it that i know of, that is what i run on my G4 and I like it. After a day with the V10 I noticed it kept dropping the wifi signal and from what little investigating I did, the T Mobile version seems to have this problem, courtesy of Team T Mobile. Not a hardware but a built in software problem. Wifi is a huge issue with me and without developer support to help me out, into the return envelope it went and back to the seller.
I like G4s well enough and they just seem like a lot of phone for the prices they are now. I found out the best service provider in my area is Verizon and i have never had Verizon service so I ordered a VS986 even though I knew the bootloaders are locked down tight and I probably would not get it rooted. I got it today and it was in excellent condition. I fired it up and within three minutes it was bootlooping. :crying: I saw this thread looking for the same thing as the OP but I am still open to a G4 but really want to put it on a Verizon MVNO if possible. I just don't know how well an 815 would work on Verizon if at all, that is if could sift thru all the 815 variants, an Fm radio would be nice and i want an IR blaster. I know most of the US G4's dont have FM radios except maybe Sprint, i forget.
If anyone has any experience with an 815 on Verizon I would be glad to hear it. I don't know if i will risk another refurb G4 or maybe start looking at the Moto X pure or one of the Moto G's, they are a little more than i want to spend. I know i want 64 bit Snapdraggon at least equal or better than the G4s. I know it is a difficult thing to find, the G4s just offer a lot for the money to me. I am still considering trying another 896 and even an 810 but if a G4 that can be rooted will work well on Verizon that would be my first choice. Sorry for the novelette length post.
One Moto Z showed up in the ads,4 months old, with 2 year guarantee from operator...
My question is:
Is there a chance that someone can mess up the battery with some incorrectly charging or something?
cc
Well, this thread can be closed now,I bought Moto Z today and I really like it! ?
To all of you who still have G4 I wish all the best and that bootloop doesn't happen to you :fingers-crossed:

LG V30 getting Oreo on Verizon

Tonight I got Android 8.0 Oreo on my LG V30 somehow. I guess LG and Verizon are rolling it out now. Only real differences I've noticed so far include a new settings app and some tweaks to the notifications pane. I wrote an article linked here which I'll be updating with more info when it comes in. https://thematridox.com/2018/03/07/lg-v30-now-receiving-android-8-0-oreo-on-verizon/

Nothing here either.

Just buy your phone without credit disguised at an operator, between the time they take to develop the update and bloatwares applications they integrate to their rom (through the boot screen with logo operators) I do not understand that people continue to buy their phone this way

If you're referring to buying a factory unlocked version, that doesn't guarantee quicker updates. The US unlocked variant of the LG G5 was the absolute last one to get the Android M update. It seemed like LG didn't give much consideration to the factory unlocked version because that sold so few of them. The update finally came several months after everyone else.

I am poor too, but in this case it is better to buy a credit shop, and complete with a package without commitment next, the operators are thieves ..

This is rarely the case, although it is true that I read on forums that it happened on some device with some operators in my country (France)
the reverse is more often the case
oreo is updating itself on my v30. vz, orange county, ca.
Mi e started downloading the Oreo update about 10 minutes ago. Also in Orange County CA.
Downloading now. PA
couple of things. it didn't screw up my lg package installer. and no AI thingy on the camera. seem standard old oreo 8 year ago release.
Still can't get into the secret menus, and no change to the charging messages, but that's probably a something Verizon controls.
After the update, I get a constant notification that "Exchange is using battery". I don't see that app listed in my settings> apps and notifications. Not sure where it came from.
Strange... Exchange is part of Microsoft email server group. Do you have something like that installed?
