I've read that the Galaxy S9 hardware is identical for all carriers in the USA.
If I bought a factory unlocked Galaxy S9 can I flash it to the carrier I am using (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T) to enable carrier specific software and features? Can I flash it back to the unlocked firmware?
I already see a thread about flashing the unlocked firmware to carrier models so I am assuming there are no issues there.
Can one carrier model be flashed to another carrier model?
No, bootloaders are different, with the S7 there was an unbranded U firmware that was compatible with most of them, unlocked firmware will be that one for the S9, but no you cannot just flash different device firmwares to the wrong model
I was able to flash the ATT rom onto my Verizon S9. I got a VZ s9 from work but I'm on ATT. For the most part it's worked great, I had done the same thing previously with a Galaxy S7. I say for the most part b/c I am on here tonight to post a question myself about the fact that I'm getting a delay with MMS messages. I imagine it has something to do with the APNs I have setup, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Did you have to flash to the U1 software first?
I do think that is what I ended up doing... tried to go directly first and it kept failing. Got fed up and decided to just try and put the bone stock rom on it, and that went on really easily.... so after using it like that a few days I tried to drop the ATT rom on it and it worked without issue.

Yes, but you need to go to the u1 firmware 1st then to the other carrier firmware. Also make sure you avoid the newer firmwares with the new bootloader, as the unlocked model and certain carrier models don't have the new bootloader.

That'll be why I still thought that then, coming straight from the S7 > S9
Had many members flashing the wrong firmwares thinking they could do that and bricking their S7s / wondering why ODIN failed

I tried downloading vzw firmware G960USQS3ARI6 to my unlocked sprint s9 and still not vzw flashed. want to do this so can have voice over LTE. Any other steps im missing? flash went through but still sprint
As soon as Firmware ver. 3 came out for the G960U1, I was able to flash it to my Sprint G960U and finally have VoLTE, WiFi calling and stable LTE for MetroPCS. Used samkey to unlock it from Sprint. My phone is actually performing much faster without all of Sprint's bloatware hogging my RAM and storage space. I can confirm that OTA updates still work the same...I received September's security patch (current) with no problems. Device is still official status and Knox hasn't been tripped.
A lot of people think you can just flash the carrier firmware of your choice and boom, it works...I had the same thought process....that's not the case. You have to make sure that there is a matching firmware version for the carrier you want to flash to, as well as make sure the G960U1 firmware version (the unlocked version of the S9's software you have to flash first before even carrier flashing) is the same version of what is installed on your phone now. It's easy ya'll......just READ lol.
I'm in love with my phone again thanks to XDA. ?

Hi, I got one unlocked G960U1(G960U1UES3ARI1) and downloaded new fireware(G960U1UES3ARI1-SPR) from sammobile, but after flashed SPR ROM successfully, the info on the phone still shows XAA, anything I missed here? Thanks!

Well first off, you have the unlocked phone. I don't. My G960U is originally from Sprint, so I'm not sure about carrier flashing regarding the G960U1. I thought it was supposed to provision itself after you put the sim in, and the associated carrier apps will download since it's the unlocked model...but I may be wrong...

I know so many people have already answered your question from some saying No to others saying Yes but you need to Install U1 first and Bla Bla Bla.
I want to give you one specific answer: With S9 you can any Carriers firmware you wish or even Unlocked phone's firmware. You will never have any issue. And you don't ever need to flash U1 or something else before changing carrier firmware you can Flash from ATT S9 firmware to VZW S9 firmware without any issue. You can also flash from U to U1 which is from Carrier specific to Unbranded/Unlocked but only hiccup is original Odin will give you SHA-256 error, which is normal because you are flashing U1 firm to U device or vice versa. This error can easily be resolved by used Patched odin that disabled SHA-256 check. And trust me you will never have any issue.
You will never want to do this but I have gone as far as mix-matching U and U1 firmware together as well. Like flashing AP, BL and CP of U device but flashing CSC of U1 device. and it still works.
hey there, a little late to the party, having trouble with going from a Verizon to a Sprint, even by way of U1. I can't get any of them to work. And I've been told I have to go from VZW to U1 before I went to Sprint. Is that not the case? I'm having a hell of a time getting anything to flash, everything fails.

well, I tried to load the Sprint image from the VZW, no dice. It said it passed, but upon reboot loaded up the old Big Red (even with the Sprint SIM in it).
Anyone have any ideas? This is driving me insane....
Getting a new-in-box Note10+ today from Swappa, so I assume it will be on some Android 9.0 TMO firmware. I need to get it onto the Verizon firmware.
SamFirm only gives the latest Android 10 firmwares. (It may be important to note that the VZW and XAA files both have the exact same filename: SM-N975U1_10_20200118102941_hj8esiossq_fac)
Is it safe to open the box > go straight into download mode > flash the newest VZW firmware via Odin?
Or are there other things I should do first? For example (in no particular order):
- the bootloader version of the phone out of the box, and the bootloader versions of the firmwares
- needing a first boot
- needing to update the software via settings before doing any flashing
- per this thread it may be necessary to first flash the XAA firmware while the verizon sim is in then do a first boot, THEN flash VZW firmware
- anything else I'm not aware of
Thank you. Also any other suggestions are welcomed. I don't want to turn this into an $800 brick and I've spent about 4 hours reading online to make sure I'm up to speed, so any feedback that's current as of today and specifically pertaining to my situation would be helpful.
You need to flash the unlocked software 1st before you flash the Verizon software. The Flash will fail if you don't. Also, the phone needs to be unlocked. Test it with the Sim card 1st.
Hi guys I got a Verizon N975U note 10 plus and its stuck on Verizon I'm trying to flash it with U1 so I can pop a sim in and changes it to that carrier. Do I just need to flash it with the U1 file here https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297980 or will it need something special the build # is SQS2ASJ8

Can't say for sure it would work on U firmware (lack of first hand experience to verify) as it would for U1.... As long as the phone is network/sim unlocked then you should be able to just put the new sim card in it (and the phone will read the sim card settings and apply them).
Flashing the U1 firmware instructions on flashing U1 firmware have been at link below (bottom of first post). You can get the firmware from that thread also.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80072192&postcount=1
Of course keep in mind that none of this will matter unless the phone is sim/network unlocked. As long as you meet the requirements from Verizon (or the phone was blacklisted for either non payment, lost/stolen or a warranty/insurance exchange that wasn't sent in) then this shouldn't be an issue.
its locked to Verizon at the moment when I put a sim in it will work for a bit then say its not allowed to use another carriers sim at this time.

Either wait until the phone is able to be unlocked by Verizon, or call them and request that they unlock it for you. Until that happens you will not be able to use a non-verizon sim card.
I would also advise keeping the U firmware for Verizon installed and not flashing the U1 firmware, as the Verizon sim/network unlock requires the carrier firmware... At least that is what I am gathering from various discussions/threads.

Is your phone carrier locked to Verizon? Has it been activated on Verizon's service for 30 days? If not, I'm pretty sure firmware flashing won't help anything. I'm on a Verizon MVNO and they wouldn't even unlock it for me to use on their own network. I had to activate with them for 30 days.
However, now that mine is unlocked, it's still locked down to Verizon in a lotof ways. My SIM card for my current carrier can't apply an APN, for example, so I have to do it manually. I'm contemplating flashing U1 to fix that issue (I hope).
I have a very similar situation. I bought a Note 10+ N975U (Verizon Unlocked) and I want to take it to U1 and then maybe to Sprint. I tried to go to the OP here and follow instructions. So I downloaded and selected all the files for U1 and apparently I did the "no-no" and got stopped with the SW Rev Check Fail : abl Fused 2 > Binary 1. I looked at what my phone is on and it is the SJ8 (November?) from Verizon. I'm guessing that means the BL file (bootloader?) in the U1 folder (SGO?) is older than what is on my phone? What do I need to do differently? I already tried without selecting the BL file, but it still gives the same error. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The bootloader of the U1 firmware you were trying to flash is lower then what is currently on your phone. So yes you are correct that is the no-no. Also you can not skip the bootloader file when flashing, so that wouldn't have worked.
If you read through that thread you will have found others asking how to go from U to U1 firmware. Also the error within regards to trying to flash a lower bootloader version firmware was also asked and answered. I would encourage you to browse that thread and the Q&A forum because this process has been discussed on more then one occasion... It might contain helpful/useful info for you.
In short you need to get a newer firmware release. Using samfirm or frija apps, or the sammobile website look for the firmware your seeking. Google searching will show you how to obtain samfirm, frija is posted the forum here if I recall correctly.
For U1 the model is SM-N975U1 and the region is XAA.
Hi everyone,
I am planning to get an unlocked S22 (AT&T unlocked, fully paid off) from the USA to my country (India). The box says it is following:
Model: SM-S901U
S/W: S901USQU1AVA7
Even though it is unlocked, i can see the SM-S901U does not support 2 5G bands which are used my in country (unlike the generic unlocked SM-S901U1). My question is that,
1) Since the s22 is basically from samsung, with the carrier models having control over the software, will i be able to flash to the generic unlocked firmware and model SM-S901U1 and get support for the other 5g bands too (i see the generic unlocked version SM-S901U1 has the 2 other bands that i need)?
2) Will the hotspot work and will i be able to recive OTA updates?
3) And the main question, will i require an AT&T SIM for the flashing process?
I was digging around the ultra thread for some info:
OTA and Non-OTA Firmware for S22 Ultra SM-S908U and S22 Ultra SM-S908U1 Versions
See Post #2 and #3 for the Links to the Firmware All of the firmware posted here can be flashed on any U or U1 Device. Each of the firmware's are NOT carrier dependent and only has carrier labels listed in order to have an idea if you might get...
forum.xda-developers.com
If someone can help/guide me, i'd be great!
Thanks and Cheers!
1. You will be able to flash s901u1 firmware (you will need a patched version of Odin to do so) but it still will not have the 5g bands, it's a hardware thing.
2. Hotspot will still work and you will be able to receive OTA updates when on s901u1 firmware.
3. No you will not, even when the phone is locked you will still not require a sim

Thanks for such a quick reply
I had thought that the bands were locked via firmware (was hoping that samsung gave control to the carriers to control the bands via software). Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case
Since the s901u1 has those bands available (i checked here: https://devicebeast.com/devices/samsung-sm-s901u1-galaxy-s22-5g-uw-dual-sim-td-lte-us-256gb), i guess that will be a better buy for 5G.
Hi all. I am from Singapore and I have gotten a s22 off an online platform here only to discover it is a USA set.
The csc is S901UOYN2AVE4
I am unable to get ota updates and am still stuck with a may 2022 android 12 update while checking updates shows as up to date.
I have some questions after doing a Google search.
1) will I be able to get ota updates? Does this mean I have to somehow change to csc and is this possible?
2) if it is not, do I have to update manually thru Odin patched? Given the above csc, can anyone guide me as to which firmware can I use? I see there are many different ones from different carriers like Verizon or t mobile
Thanks in advance!
were you able to find a solution? I am also facing the same issue
None so far.
Have you guys tried smartswitch?
hello! I have also researched a bit & came to this conclusion. The device was possibly under a carrier (such as ATT or Verizon) from the US. Although it's unlocked and you can use any sim card but you won't receive any updates unless you use the sim card of that particular carrier. You can install the latest firmware using ODIN tool yourself by downloading firmware based on CSC region code. You can youtube to find the specific CSC region of your phone. Please let me know if you find any other solution. & also please let me know what 'service provider software version' is on your device. you can find it at About phone>Software Information

I have managed to flash it with the right software and get it to update ota. To test this I flashed a older android 12 firmware and it manages to update to android 13 ota.
Follow the steps in this thread closely and you will be good. Use the unlocked u1 version firmware.
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS22/comments/t49c10
Just to confirm one thing, My CSC is S901UOYN2AVE4 and AP/CP/BASEBAND is S901USQU2AVE4. Csc is basically same as you.
But my service provider software version is SAOMC_SM_S901U_OYN_GCF_12_0002
GCF/GCF, GCF/XAA.
Will it alright to flash u1 unlocked firmware to the device? This software version shouldn't be an issue right?
