Custom launcher? - Huawei Mate XS Questions & Answers

Anyone had any success installing a custom launcher? I have the Chinese TAH-AN00m model third party launchers are blocked, Attempting to install one it just defaults back to Huawei Home.
I've read that u can use adb to disable the stock EMUI one, or use package disabler as another method.
Have yet to try these myself though

Nova works fine for me on an european model.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Is the device really worth paying top dollar for? I'm about to spend $3k after taxes.

Don't think any of us could answer that question for you...
I'm happy with it and don't regret the purchase one bit, but we have no idea of your priorities and financials...

That's a fair answer. Money isn't an issue, just wanted to know what everyone's take on it is. Currently rocking a Z Flip.

LG G3 build # JDQ39B

Hello all,
just a quick question as I'm new to this phone and have a few starting questions(I'm coming from HTC one so this is all new), I have read and read threads about build numbers but I'm not finding mine. I have the d855 variant with a build #JDQ39B and it has 4.4.2 but it is horrible. it's missing alot of features:
edit options oe Q-Slide within the quick settings
Dual screen
multi copy and paste
and many other factory features.
Also the battery life is horrendous( recharge it 3 times per day).
What I'm looking to do is either change the kdz firmware file to another region( preferably canada if possible) or root, install twrp and install a ROM such as Cloudy G3 2.1( again if possible).
But because of this starting issue of this phantom build # I don't know where to begin. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Also, apparently this device isn't compatible will stumproot. which sucks but I'll try towelroot as well.
update, towelroot will only give me a text file no apk. again, that sucks.

Brother your LG G3 is a fake

Remember, if its too good to be true it probably is
LG G3 is still roughly mid $450s (if your lucky) to $500 something in most stores
Noone would sell one for $380 unless its a LG G3 Beat or if its a second hand phone
Its fake who'd you get it from?
Just never seen any fakes yet? theres the Kings something but that doesn't even hold the same shape. I've stripped this thing down to the motherboard and it all jives. Amazing work they did. I'm gonna try a oem battery and see if it helps longevity?

Can China Version Can Be Flashed?

I am planning to purchase the Lava Red version which is only sold in China. Judging from the Chinese specs page, it appears the difference is the OS? So that means the bootloader may be unlocked, I can flash a custom ROM or kernel from XDA, and basically use it as if I had the international version correct?
Of course it can. I'm also buy the red lava version from Shenzen, China. The ROM itself is Hydrogen OS and I flash Oxygen OS. For tutorials, you can check it out at this link : http://downloads.oneplus.net/
Default bootloader is locked.

What do they charge for shipping to U.S.? Do you pay customs too?
I bought an International Red OP5T 8GB/128GB from GearBest,it has Oxygen OS installed,YMMV if bought else where:
https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_1460037.html?wid=21
I paid a lot less than current pricing.
If you subscribe/open a GearBest account & receive promotional e-mails,you'll see some special e-mail subscriber only pricing on the OP5T every 2-3 days.
FWIW,I paid $549.99 USD for my Red OP5T (I opted for express DHL shipping, added about $9.50 USD to the total cost,no other taxes or fees to the US) ........................

They're cheaper than what?
Not cheaper than what I paid...... to the contrary a bit more.
The 1st one I see in this link is an auction, not an actual selling price.....
As I mentioned, you'll get email only specials if you sign up for GearBest/open an account.
Otherwise, you will see higher pricing.

ok im all signed up. atm it's 755usd. if the discount and so on is all applied it'll come down to 400gpb (50gpb cheaper than those ebay ones) or 550usd near your price.
if i got that for 400gpb id be so happy. because the standard ones we can find for about 360gpb. only 40gpb or 55usd more for the red!!
thank you man, so i should just wait now for their emails. id wait a couple of weeks no problem.
just to confirm, these red ones are all the same model/version. they can all be rooted and custom rom?
also the finger print scanner on back is liek google pixel, just a scanner, not a power button like LG v20, v30, g6 etc? how do you find that? I had the lg v20 and I thought it was the best phone at the time ever (i came from samsung notes before they screwed up the note series and then put the rear sensors too high for my puny hands lol.....) as in I like the finger scanner and power as one. sometimes annoying to turn off phone screen though, thats why i think i'll like the oneplus 5t because the power button is separate, also i like that mute, vibrate and sound button, great feature without unlocking phone.
but the oneplus 6 is being announced in march? i could wait, but i kinda need a work phone now

You won't have to wait long for the emails to start rolling in, I get two every day like clockwork.
I've seen the OP5T on about 3-4 emails in the past 10 days or so. Ordered mine about a week - ten days ago, it arrived Thursday (1-7-18).
The FPR is just that, not a combination power button. The power button & SIM tray are on the right side, volume & mute on the left.
It shipped with OOS 7.1.1, Google Services on board, Bootloader locked.

what exactly does that mean, whats good about oxygen compared to the other?
also google services onboard means what exactly? and bootlocker locked means it's locked, does that mean we have to get trwp or someone to unlock the bootloader?
sorry for being hopeless lol

This is beginning to go off-topic.....
Take a look around the OP5T forum & Google search for answers to these questions, especially for Bootloader Unlocking / TWRP.
Regarding Google services on board, it means just that:
Phones solely intended for use in China do not have Google services installed. The international models do.
If you want to use anything Google related, buy an international model, unless sideloading/Bootloader unlocking/etc..... are 2nd nature to you.
If all of this is new to you, I highly suggest doing the same searches on YouTube, the how-to videos are a great tool to use.....

No,that isn't what I said or inferred:
I merely suggested getting an International version since it has Google services installed.
Apparently, either version can be bootloader unlocked & have TWRP/Root/ROMs.

I switch phones a lot,so,I'm probably the worst person to ask,LOL.
Outside of owning the predecessor, the OP5,for a couple weeks ( I switch phones a lot.....& often ) ,I've been away from OnePlus since their Original 1+1,a lot has changed since then............
Most new phones no longer have some of the features many of us grew accustomed to (Removable Battery/SD Card slot/I-R Blaster/Dual Front-facing speakers).
Those things aside, this phone,IMHO,hardly needs much,if anything done to it.
My one recommendation would be to use it as-is,explore the features/settings it ships with before diving in to the ROM scene.
I'm rollin' w/stock OOS Android 8.0 beta ATM, at least for a month or so,before I dive in to the modding scene.
@entwicklun
Here's a couple videos,one straight from OnePlus,glad I took a look myself:
Good idea I'll go stock for awhile and get accustomed! Nice find.
I had an iPhone 3 back in the day. the one thing I miss from IOS is their magnifying glass when you try to correct a typo, you press and hold on a word and it'll zoom in then you drag to where you want the cursor to be. it's so damn faster than android stock gotta constantly click exactly at characters to delete a letter or pinch my screen to bloody zoom in.
Samsung and LG don't do the zoom in stock or android I don't think. it looks like this : and can we do it on oneplus or do you know something we can flash? I don't think it's an app. I think it's in the os or rom?

Can you flash the Global ROM on the 256 GB Version?

I know that people have confirmed to have done it on the 128GB Version, but I was wondering if anyone has flashed the global ROM on the 256GB Version of the phone?
Another question that isn't really related to this particular one, and for people on Verizon, how is the phone on Verizon? Are there any issues you are having or had before hand? I am very interested in buying the phone, which is why I am asking. One last question, and this is miscellaneous really, is what ROM would you recommend flashing?

need help choosing please

I currently have the mate 20 pro and it has the green screen issue. So... Sadly I'm sending it back, I was going to swap it for another though amazon advised me not to. They also refunded the accessories I purchased which supprised me. I now don't know whether to try to import a mate 20 X or settle for the 6t. I would be grateful if anyone with the 20x could help me decide and answer a few questions?
I haven't seen any threads about it. But has anyone had any issues with the screen?
I've read some people have had problems with the Chinese version, when looking at adverts how do I make sure the phone I'm buying is the international version? Most don't say they just give the model number.
Is there an 8gb/256 version of the international model? Does enyone have an ebay link for where I could get it sent to the UK?
Does anyone have any reasons why I shouldn't consider getting this phone?
Thanks for your help.
I don't have the phone (at least yet) but i'm following closely all threads because i'm very interested too and i never see anyone complaining about the gluegate, even a reviewer frankytech thinks its only targeting pro series because of the curved screen.
If you want to buy international version you need to check if the model is named EVR-L29, china model is AL00. There's no international model atm in 256/8GB variant. About sellers to the international, there's splendor, wonda, funkyhuawei, expansys and ebay. Probably more but i forgot.

Would you recommend the Chinese model?
Is it easy to add the play store? Are there any issues with Google services? e.g. Google pay? As I use that a lot.
I bought an xaomi tablet and that took a lot of effort to get Google app store and services working properly.
Also I was wondering does face unlock work OK on this phone? I know it doesn't have the 3d scanner.

I came from a OnePlus 6. Definitely get the 20 X if you like large screen phones. The X uses a Samsung AMOLED panel and is free of defects. I would buy the Global version if root isn't important to you. If it is then buy the Chinese version. I bought the Global version and have no issues with it. The 6gb/128 Global version is plenty fast. You won't see any difference between the 6gb and 8gb versions as far as speed or apps in memory goes, it's all pretty much a gimmick unless you're buying the 256gb/8gb version just for the storage size.

The storage was the main reason I ended up going for the Chinese version.
I'm worried about Google pay not working on Chinese phones but I'm hoping the rest will end up working OK.
Hopefully someone will work out how to rebrand it so I can have the best of both worlds.

Please let me know how it works out, the 20X is my next phone just trying to decide which one I want. The China version is like $200 cheaper than the International one or the same price for the 8 gig versus the 6gig international version.

I have the China 8/256 version. And although I was worried about getting it once I changed the language, keyboard, got Google play to work it's a great phone.. my wife is laughing at me saying it's too big but personally I love it. It's fast and smooth and the screen is amazing.
I've not tried Google pay yet. I was able to add my credit card but not my bank card strangely. I will try Google pay tomorrow and let you know.

So it's pretty much the same experience as a American phone?

New Huawei Mate 20x Chinese version HELP!

Hi and thanks ahead for any thoughts..
Am in Canada and have received the new Mate 20x 5G. (8/256)..Canada being a year away from 5G but I travel alot.
It is the Chinese version and I am cutting my head off trying to get things working properly...
1. I CANNOT change the Launcher from Huawei Home. Thoughts??
2. When I use notepad and speak, it translates to Chinese rather than English, although my language is set to English.
This is much the same with any Huawei apps or AI or whatnot. I am finding it a real challenge getting rid of the Chinese... but my fault I guess as this is a Chinese version.
Oh... EVR-AN00 Build 9.9.9.168
Any help at all would be truly appreciated.

I can only partially answer your question. The Chinese version doesn't support or allow third party launchers. I guess I'll be seeing your mate 20x on eBay shortly [emoji1787]

This is the only disadvantages of Chinese versions, you should have taken the global one.
There are advantages as well, cheaper and might get update faster.

Sorry! you might have some luck if you can buy a bootloader unlock - which currently does not exist. And wow! I just learned that the notepad transcribes my voice ... into Chinese. Might be very handy if I knew some Mandarin. Is there a 5G EVR-N29? Hope someone can help you, but I think not. Go to the Goodbye Huawai thread and vote for FU Huawei for locking the bootloader. All we need is another 1493 to reach 1500.................

Still a great phone though...
Further...
Only the tip of the iceberg I am afraid. I am heading to China the first week of December and am pretty certain that I will be returning with a Mate X. This will frustrate me beyond comprehension if I cannot find a way to get Google Apps on it.
As far as the Mate 20x 8/256.... absolutely love the screen size, build and camera. The battery is better than the Note 8 I was using although I had a 1TB card in that phone and I am limited to 256GB integrated and the 256GB Nano card.and ... well I already mentioned the fact that I cannot get rid of much of the Chinese that is part and parcel to Launcher, Notepad, AI and so on. It is rather amusing speaking in Notepad and having it transcribe into Chinese...

you can download the playstore from the appgallery and then get all you want from it etc.
changing the launcher isnt possible on the cn version but to be honest despite that am a nova die hard user, i didnt find the launcher that bad at all and could handle using it ( i have the global version tho )
most of the chinese stuff can be uninstalled manually or via adb and there is a post on here with a list that can help.
as for the storage issue, you ofc can max the sd card to 256 gigs but you can also have your most important stuff on an usb c otg flashdrive .
as for the notepad, am not so sure if you use another note app would it be the same or not , but after all the decision is all yours , i do love this phone and its the best i have ever owned so good luck with your decision
