[ROOT] How to flash Stock Boot.img (or any TWRP flashable File) NO Fastboot! - Moto G Stylus (Moto G Pro) Guides, News, & Discuss

I been looking for this for months...
This has been Tested on my ROOTed with Magisk and BL Unlocked Moto G Stylus XT2043-4 which is The US Retail Version of G Pro, mine is US retail version with MetroPCS branding. (Yes I am Carrier Locked and Bootloader Unlocked)
1) Download Stock Moto G Pro / G Stylus Firmware (Version you are currently on)
I personally use : mirrors.lolinet (dot) com/firmware/moto/sofiap/official/
2) Extract and copy Stock boot.img to Downloads Folder in device
3) Go to Play Store and Download Free or Paid version of FK Kernel Manager.
4) Go into FK and accept ROOT privledges and go into settings ( of FK).
5) Select Downloads and accept Permission for FK to read Downloads Folder
6) Select Manual Flasher on FK, opens Downloads Folder, Selec Stockt Boot.img you extracted from Firmware.
7) Reboot! Success! Open Magisk Manager and make sure it says Not Installed. If it's Installed, restart at the top at #1
W;hy would you want to flash stock boot.img?
- Even though I shut Auto-Update OFF, updates still continue and do NOT finish.
-Magisk bit meeeeee, now I'm scared.
-Development is lacking, no custom ROMs, so OTAs Excite me.
-After Rooting my Device via LIX or Windows, PC broke (It really did, several times)

Also to note if you update magisk with a direct install it'll patch the dtbo image so make sure you flash the stock dtbo.img too if you do a direct install

I'm not even sure what magisk does to it, but I don't think anything noticable will happen. Just any OTA will fail to install since there's a modded partition still.

Root H815 on MM 6.0 V20d?

Hi guys ☺,
I bought today G4 eu model,it came with Marshmallow 6.0 V20d version.
I want to root it because of Greenify and Xposed,to increase the battery time, maybe later to flash some rom but...
There is a lot of topics on this subject,I started to read but I'm lost right now...as far as I saw,I can't root Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader, only Lollipop, right?
Is it a big trouble to go back from MM to LP?
I'm not new in this flashing and rooting stuff,I had (still have) a Motorola Razr XT910,I flashed it 100 times for sure for 3.5 years but I didn't had to unlock the bootloader (it's impossible anyway) and there's a custom recovery Safestrap, modified Twrp which allows to flash and use 6 different roms, from JB to MM,without changing the kernel...
I will be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction,to give me some useful links etc.
And is there some list which procesess are safe to freeze with TB and which ones I can greenify?
Oh,and the bloatware too...
Sorry if I'm demanding but I want to bring out the best from this phone
Thank you in advance

Hi,
root without unlocking bootloader works only on lollipop, right. Not sure if u can downgrade, but when, u will use "LGUP" tool with the "H81510D.kdz" file. Maybe there exists a pre-rooted kdz to flash.
If u want to root android 6, u need a unlocked bootloader. Rooted Android 5.1.1 or unlock bootloader with rooted android 6.x.x
Ok,I successfully unlocked the bootloader but now I'm stuck with rooting and installing Twrp...
I've downloaded BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247 and TWRP-3.0.0.0-H815+ but there's a lot of metods,which one should I use?
Flash SuperSu+Twrp with stock recovery?
Install Twrp with adb command and then flash SuperSu with Twrp?
Install both with adb command?
I also saw somewhere that I must flash some other kernel that is already rooted...
I just need root and the Xposed for now, help me guys!
Im also Confused..Where can i find rooted kernel?
I already did this Method u said...But I got Boot Loop
Then I revover my phone with Lg Bridge
We need to find this.....I also Had Android MM with V20d

In my case I wasn't able to flash recovery on the stock kernel, I had to flash boot.img unpacked from the custom kernel like SimpleGX and only then I was able to flash recovery and full kernel through it.

the method i followed was-
1. boot into twrp recovery with adb command(you need to have the twrp.img file in PC and also copy it in internal memory of your phone with SU)
2. flash systemless root with twrp
3. reboot
4. install flashify
5.flash twrp.img from your phone.
6. done
but there aren't as much benefits of rooting as any other phone. viper4android doesn't work. spirit fm doesn't work. xposed doesn't work properly.(these 3 were the main reasons for which i rooted)

I didn't know i could flash something other than .zip files with twrp.
As for viper4android i tried normal way, flashed it with twrp, flashed extreme music mod with v4a fix. None seem to work. The drivers never get installed.
Xposed i haven't tried. I was in process of getting more information about it by reading various threads. But all seem to point to problems like bootloop, fc and Bluetooth issues. Can you guide me towards the best version of xposed for v20d with way to avoid problems or with as less problems as possible?

Flash Imperium Kernel or SimpleGX Kernel. I used their kernels and ROMS on my older phones, they are legend. I suggest you to flash Imperium Rom. It includes kernel and everything and it is updated regularly by its dev.

I think doesn't need to install recovery to root the phone.
Just this:
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot TWRP-2-8.7.0-h815.img
Wait a second and it will open, on the phone, the recovery.
Once open go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and take a swipe to start it where it says "Swipe to Start sideload".
Now on the PC write
3) adb sideload BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247.zip
( If it says after the instalation to install supersu etc just abort it)
And then, when installation is complete, press "Reboot System"
I rooted it this way, without install TWRP Recovery

Yeah - but the question has to be asked - why unlock the bootloader and root and not install TWRP? If you've got as far as unlocking the bootloader you might as well make life easier for yourself and install TWRP - that way anything you want to flash in the future can be done without being tethered to the PC, and also allows you to take proper full system image backups etc.

Of course , i agree with you. By the way, we can't root g4 on m6 without unlocked bootloader.
And finally, i decided to pass twrp on my phone, for every file i want to install from twrp, and not every time to boot from pc
You're right
p.s. the first thing i did after twrp installed, was to install g5 live wallpapers

[GUIDE] How to finally root EMUI9

Hey guys,
here is just a short guide on how to root EMUI9 with the newest Magisk 18.1 canary builds just release by John Wu.
This is not my work! All credits for this go to John Wu, the developer of Magisk.
You can try this of your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damage.
NOTE:
With the new Magisk, John Wu remapped the restart button in the standard power menu, so when you reboot with that button, you'll always reboot with root.
The power button works as normal.
You can revert to the stock recovery or an TWRP recovery at any time but without root.
- Download the TWRP app from Google PlayStore and install it.
- Go to the TWRP app and download the lastest twrp image for P20 Pro.
- Downlod one of the Magisk apk's from here and install it.
- Open the Magisk app, go to settings, put the update channel to manual and insert one of the links shown ontop of this page.
- Go back to the first page of Magisk, refresh it and make sure to install the lastet magisk apk. Open it again.
- You'll get asked to download and install the lastest Magist.zip. Do this and choose to patch only the boot.img. Choose the TWRP.img you've downloaded before.
- Plugin you device to a PC and download the patched img to your PC. Now reboot to fastboot mode and flash the patched img with "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk patched_image.img"
- Now unplug your device and shut it down. Reboot it with holding vol-up button. Now it should boot fine with working root.
Have fun and thank you John Wu for your great work!
Not working
It's working for me. Finally have a root for EMUI 9
Do not use TWRP.img for patching,
use RECOVERY_RAMDISK instead
or simply download pre_patched one from here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rhl405-ALbYrtGHilrNUR5Fuq4yATvTH/view?usp=drivesdk

I'm strongly thinking about getting the P20 Pro tomorrow
But I really want it to be able to run with Magisk and its wonderful modules.
So a quick question, or two:
1) That patched_boot.img - do I use fastboot and then Flash Ramdisk? Any other requirements out of the box? Do I have to unlock the bootloader (noob question).
2) Is it only for EMUI 9.0? Do I get this version by the official updater?
Best regards

I think you'll need an unlocked bootloader and if your phone is new and locked you'll struggle obtaining root on any version of EMUI as it requires an unlocked bootloader. I believe there are paid services for that.

I think you'll need to unlock bootloader before unless you receive the EMUI 9 update. But you may still need an unlocked bootloader. Better docrhst before you proceed. This is only coming from somone with an unlocked bootloader so I'm not sure if it's possible without.

That patched image file is only for EMUI 9,
and you need to flash it to recovery_ramdisk partition, not ramdisk. There's no longer ramdisk in EMUI 9. This is the exact reason for our trouble acquiring root, until topjohnwu, again, come as life saver, LoL
but if you decide to root on oreo and not upgrading, then you can simply use TWRP to flash Magisk.zip just like how you did with other phone.
for both, Unlocked Bootloader is a MUST. Unlock yours when you are still on 8.1. You gonna need to pay for the unlock code though. Keep your code safely in case you need it in the future.

Thanks for clarifying that!
So I start with unlocking the bootloader (funkyhuawei .club/ buycodes - $55 )
Then see if there's an official upgrade to EMUI 9 available,
if not I will flash it myself(?),
then flash this premade patched_boot.img to recovery_ramdisk.
Another nooby question, what is it exactly that's changed on this .img?
Thanks!

Are you saying the power button (restart/power off) no longer works? That's weird!
What about apps that provide an advanced power menu/ reboot widgets etc?
How do we unroot/revert to stock (for future OTA purposes)? Should we be backing up our boot img? If so, how?

Forget, what I told you in the first post. With the new Magisk, John Wu remapped the restart button in the standard power menue, so when you reboot with that button, you'll always reboot with root. The power button works as normal.
And for your second question:
Yeah, basically, that's it.
If you need to go back to stock, you need to extract the recovery ramdisk image from the original firmware, downloaded for example with Huawei Firmware Finder or maybe someone can provide the stock image.

Excellent, nice and simple that's what we like!!
Interesting way of doing it though, it's effectively booting from the recovery partition rather than the normal boot partition...hence no TWRP! I presume you could swap between rooted and stock that way...would help with those apps that even Magisk can't hide root from...would almost not want the remapping of the power button if it allowed you to swap between the two states (i.e. reboot from power button takes you to stock, reboot via up vol makes you rooted!)

my file patched with magisk as well of course,
difference is, author of this thread using TWRP image as base, while am using a pure stock recovery ramdiak from .168 EMUI 9 firmware
TWRP image can work as well, but may cause issue in some devices with different firmware version,
after all, topjohnwu tell you to use recovery ramdisk image, not TWRP right
Thanks
It worked fine, but not with TWRP img, I used my own recovery img
Can´t get to rooted EMUI 9. Always ended in non-rooted even after multiple reboots to recovery

Root SM-G780F (Exynos)

Hi there,
I just dared to try and root my new S20 FE...and it worked.
I basically followed the steps in the S20 root Thread or the Link from the S10 root thread.
I didn't use vbmeta_disabled.tar, seems like it is not needed anymore.
Was also curious if we could just use TWRP from S20...but I ended up with a soft brick...so doesn't seem to be so easy :crying::crying:

Hard brick where you are stuck with a phone that never boot again. Very hard to do though
I would attempt it but I couldn’t find an Australian firmware...

Just managed to root my 5G SD version as well following the S20 link. It’s even easier now using the latest magisk manager to directly install magisk rather than patching tar file.
Edit: I didn’t use vbmeta either.

Btw on the S20 forum section [RECOVERY][UNOFFICIAL] TWRP for Galaxy S20 Series (Snapdragon) a recovery is ready to test.

As per the S20 link by OP, here's a very quick summary of what I did:
1. Unlocked my bootloader.
2. Skipped "Stage 3: Disable Android Verified Boot" in the link.
3. Searched and downloaded latest official firmware from sammobile specific for my australian model.
4. Used Odin to upgrade. I put CSC instead of HOME_CSC to erase all my data (not much data on my phone anyway) wanting a clean upgrade, and left "USERDATA" blank.
5. Skipped "Stage 5 and 6" in the link.
6. Downloaded and installed Magisk Manager from Magisk official website.
7. Installed Magisk in Magisk Manager using its "Direct Install (recommended)" option (can't remember the exact words).
And my phone was rooted.
Note I did not do any backup while rooting my phone because it's pretty new and nothing much was on it (and it's not my primary phone), so it's a high risk procedure if it's your primary phone and if something went very wrong.
Hope this helps.
Can I flash European firmware to.my hong Kong version?
So the the U.S. At&t Snapdragon version can't be rooted?
ı just twrp please

I don't get how you were able to utilize direct install.
Direct install would only appear if you already had root access isn't it?
If I follow steps
1 - unlocked bootloader
2 - skip stage 3
3 - skip stage 4 (due to already being on latest firmware.)
4 - skip stagr 5, 6 (your step)
5 - install magisk
6 - no direct install option.
?-?

I'm not sure why I was able to do direct install on my unrooted phone, noob here just following guides
I haven't had a samsung phone before, if I root it am I going to have problerms with warranty later?
I was able to install magisk root using instructions here: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#samsung-system-as-root
Used Frija for getting the FW.
edit: It seems magisk on this device breaks Tidal? Can anyone else confirm? Flashed back to stock, Tidal works, but with magisk patched tidal stops playback of all songs at 0:19.
I have some problems with rooting my device:
I tried to flash vbmeta_disabled.tar but ODIN fails to flash it
I used magisk to patch the boot.img and then flashed the image using ODIN, root works and I can access the system, but I can't change system to read-write, so I can't make any changes to files in system (or any other folder in root). Any apps I have get root access from magisk, but fail when attempting to make any changes to system files, so they are useless.
Does anyone else have these issues? Is there a step I should have done to be able to write to system/root?
So what's the process of root on Android 11?

in my limited understanding android 10+ has a strictly read only system partition. any changes have to made via magisk overlays like systemless host files in adaway for example. EDIT: also there's ADB that can edit / write.
Has anyone got the full steps for rooting a new s20 fe? Lets say I buy the phone and upgrade using ota to Android 11 straight away...then what?

None of the rooting guides work?

Can anyone write an up-to-date guide on precisely what I need to do to install TWRP on a global-edition, fully updated (MIUI 12) Note 8 Pro today?...
There are three different guides and none of them work. I'm not interested in custom firmwares or anything else besides TWRP. I just want to install TWRP and magisk.
We are in the same boat...
Edit: N/A
Are you able to unlock your bootloader?
Also, pay really close attention to the warning at the top of the TWRP downloads page for your device.
WARNING: This device hard bricks really easily for unknown reasons. Restoring device without spending real money is impossible as of now. Don't flash TWRP unless you are an advanced user who knows what he is doing.

Additionally, there are a lot of weird quirks all over the place, which makes your device... non-optimal for modding.
Let me know if you really want help with this.
I really just wanted root and didn't realize you aren't supposed to use TWRP for it on new phones (especially this one.)

It's not that you're not supposed to use TWRP. It's that you need to know what you're doing.
That device you have is very easy to brick. I'm just making sure.
If you do only want root, that is very easy. First: do you have an unlocked bootloader? Second: exactly what software version do you have?

Installing Magisk from recovery is a legacy option and no longer recommended. The recommended method of installing Magisk consists of patching the boot image using the Magisk Manager app and then using fastboot to flash the patched boot image to the phone.
Installing TWRP is then as easy as using Magisk Manager to flash the TWRP installer zip, then reinstalling Magisk using direct install.
In order to retrieve a boot image to patch, you need to download the update you are using to a computer, then use a tool like Payload Dumper to extract the boot.img.
Kind of complex but it's the only option if installing TWRP without it bootloops you.

I don't own this device so I don't know any guides. The process is the same for most devices and the scripts will automate it for you.
Like I said, find a software update for your phone (search "miui 12.4.847.37586 OTA update zip" or similar), use Payload Dumper to extract a boot.img, transfer it to your device, install Magisk Manager and use that to patch the image, download the patched image to your computer, boot the phone into fastboot and flash the new boot image, and you'll have Magisk.
From there, go to the official TWRP website and download the "twrp-installer" for your device. Use Magisk Manager to install it. Then direct install Magisk to keep root.

Hey!! Fun fact, you don't need to use payload dumper for that! Download the "Full ROM" with "Type: Recovery", and unzip it. Inside there will be a "boot.img". That's what you patch using Magisk Manager.

Question Updating to Android 13 while keeping bootloader unlock/TWRP/root

I have been digging through these forums, but can't find an straight step-by-step guide explaining how you go about manually updating the firmware on this device when you have the bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, and rooted with Magisk.
I know that having the bootloader unlocked means that the device can no longer get updates automatically and that the updates have to be manually downloaded installed from the ASUS website. But what I don't understand is how to install the firmware from the ASUS website and still keep TWRP recovery and Magisk root.
This is my first time updating the device after I first set it up in January, so I would very much appreciate it if some one knowledgeable could explain this process to me
(In case you need to know, I'm currently on WW-32.2810.2212.241 firmware, with TWRP 3.70_12-0 and Magisk 25.2 installed.)

I think twrp will not work properly with android 13 because twrp is made for android 12
Dumper UL full upgrade and you will get Boot.img and recovery.img (keep both files at safe place).
Use magisk manager to patch the boot file.
Keep recovery.img (original A13) and TWRP.img safe in ADB root folder (dont mix them up).
1. Update FOTA to Android 13 by copy UL full upgrade into root folder of your phone. If copy from PC/laptop with cable then unplug the cable, your phone will recognize the package, (if you already change COUNTRY CODE and currently use WW 241 rom that will be success update). Otherwise, reboot your device and pop up will appear. Wait the phone is fully reboot and set up everything.
2. Reboot your phone into download mode/fastboot mode (it's better that you should enable USB debug/Developer mode before doing anything). Using CMD command to flash patched boot from Magisk Manager. And reboot, now your phone could gain back root.
3. Check again if the recovery is gone or not. If it's gone, then use termux or any terminal emulator for the "dd command".
You will gain back the TWRP, if any failed, flash back original recovery.img that you have lately in ADB folder on your PC.
PS: backup everything, since going back from Android 13 to Android 12 need to full factory reset.
