Open Camera Mod - real 64MP for Redmi Note 8 Pro [no root] - Redmi Note 8 Pro Themes, Apps, and Mods

Ive tested this on my Redmi Note 8 Pro on stock MIUI 12. For me it is working. It is a source code mod on the open source project Open Camera
see https://opencamera.org.uk/
Why would you want this?
Currently it doesnt offer much over the stock MIUI Camera App, they both have real 64MP, but Open Camera allows a sequence of images without having to press the shutter button over, for me this was motivation to get this to work, as I plan on stacking images.
Compatibility
It is working on my stock Redmi Note 8 Pro with MIUI 12. In theory it should work on any Xiaomi device with high resolution quad filter array sensors if they are using the same methods, but I only have this one to test it with.
How to use it
You will have to uninstall Open Camera in order to install this if youre using Open Camera (official). Once open tap the gear icon on the upper right to open settings, scroll down to Camera API, change it to Camera2. Then in Photo settings change resolution to 64MP. Back in the main settings area, under processing settings you may turn Noise reduction algorithm to off and Edge algorithm to off if you wish so.
Issues
RAW does not work in Open Camera, as it tries to automatically open a raw image request with the highest reported RAW size available, the phone reports that 64MP RAW_SENSOR is indeed available but the configuration fails whenever you try to open it, I dont know why yet and if its possible to enable RAW 64MP or not. MIUI Camera actually supports RAW as well its just disabled.
Additionally, disabling noise reduction doesnt appear to turn noise reduction off (at least not fully) in low ISO, so low contrast texture details are likely still to get smeared out regardless. On the bright side it does to disable higher ISO noise reduction to some degree and there appears to be plenty of noise (this is good for stacking since we can recover details from the noise cancelling out, when noise reduction smooths out the noise + destroys low contrast, texture details etc, even stacking wont bring them back).
The Proof
These image samples have been enlarged by 300% digitally to avoid compression and for larger viewing size to ascertain differences, the GCam images were shot with GCam Reborn so that you can see it does indeed capture a lot more detail, the 16mp Open Camera sample was also captured with the mod on, it appears to have improved detail over regular 16mp shots as well.

In original open camera and this mod, the saved picture is always much darker than the preview, and there is some glitchiness when switching between white balance modes.
EU variant, no root, on MIUI 12.0.1.

Unfortunately the darkness difference is not due to my phones brightness settings, and is a glitch in the apps processing on this phone or something.
The white balance breaking if you switch between a preset and auto, is also a problem with the app, and not due to my screen brightness settings.

For the [email protected] just use another camera app,
For the bitrate what undo you want it to be
Currently [email protected] is 20mb while [email protected] is 34mb
that is a nice option but it would be better to have it all in one app cause i don't want to change. With the LG G4 app it was just a change in some xml

For me "a better camera" and "camera fv5" are not working correctly..
Bad quality on ABC and front facing camera issues on fv5. Anyone experiencing the same?
anyone tried Open Camera? IIRC it can set fps and bitrate, but I don't have an OP3 with me to test it out

Oh that's unfortunate, guess we can only hope for updates
Another question, iirc 16MP mode is 4:3, 12MP mode is 16:9. So is 12MP just a crop of 16MP?
If that's the case I'll just use 12MP to save some space

Bro trust me even in 16mp mode
It saves photos in JPEG at around 6-2mb per pic.
So that depends.
I have clicked images in HQ of 8mb and auto HDR at 4mb so make the picture.
While in 12Mp mode 3.5 to 5mb is the deal.
So in a nutshell not much difference

Features
JPEG quality increased to 100
Denoise responsible of the watercolor picture disabled
Sharpness adapted before picture been processing to prevent watercolor picture
IntelligentHQ : prevent higher ISO than needed in good light situation
Possibility of choosing front camera sharpness in Settings
Before installing
If you have installed an update of Oneplus Camera before, you have to understand that the update is "above" the original system application. Because my mod replace the original system application, you will never see a difference because the current app will be the updated app and not the system app.
To remove the update, go into the App Info of Oneplus Camera, press the tree dots in the top right and press "Uninstall Updates". (thanks to @Im_Mattgame for this easier way)
Current settings I use
Sharpness for front camera => 3
Bugs known
Panorama and watermark doesn't work
Changelog
Code:
[B]2018.07.22 [/B]
- Based on new version 2.8.11.
- Code base cleaned to prevent some errors.
- Not adapted to OP6 yet !
[B]2018.02.22 [/B]
- Quick fix concerning the new feature "IntelligentHQ". It should work more consistently now.
[B]2018.02.21 [/B]
- New feature "IntelligentHQ" : In good light situation, Oneplus Camera app tends to use a higher ISO than needed. In order to prevent this, when it's possible, I use automatically the HQ mode to lower the ISO rate. The picture will be more detailed and with less noise thanks to low ISO. Only works in "No-HDR mode", which is the default mode.
- Sharpness decreased in really low-light situations to prevent oil-painted pictures
- Panorama mode should work now (thanks to [user=2185114]@DorianX[/user])
[B]2018.02.12 [/B]
- Sharpness increased in really low-light situations
- Sharpness decreased in good and mid light situations to avoid too much noise / oversharpening effect
- Noise reduction is applied a bit earlier than before to avoid too much noise. Don't worry for the oil-painting effect I have adapted the sharpness for it
- Remove of the switch for disabling noise reduction in Parameters : It causes too much confusion. I have seen many people asking if they need to enable it or not, so I remove it. When it was enabled, the picture quality was really bad compared to when it was disabled anyway.
- Auto-HDR and HDR is now working like the original Oneplus Camera app
- No-HDR is now by default. It gives better results than Auto-HDR, even when Auto-HDR doesn't not kick the HDR mode
- Code base cleaned and prepared for the next "big" feature :)
[B]2018.01.31 [/B]
- Sharpness increased in some bright-light situations
- Sharpness decreased in mid-light and low-light situations to mitigate "oil-painting" effect and others weirderies caused by Oneplus noise reduction. Pictures should be now more "natural", even with Oneplus noise reduction on.
- Renaming of the switch in Settings because it caused confusion concerning the light situation. I added a subtitle which explains how and when it works. I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO NOT ENABLE THIS SWITCH.
[B]2018.01.28 [/B]
- Noise reduction enabled by default in pictures with ISO between 800 and 3000 (was already by default when ISO was upper than 3000)
- Added a switch to disable noise reduction in low light (ISO between 800 and 3000). Not possible to disable when ISO is upper than 3000 because is really ugly without noise reduction.
- Name of the version is included now in Settings to avoid confusion
[IMG]https://i.cubeupload.com/eLSM9v.jpg[/IMG]
[B]2018.01.26 [/B]
- Based on original version 2.5.22
- Fix for selfie pictures at 4MP (thanks for the report !)
[B]2018.01.24 [/B]
- Remove chroma noise and increase sharpness in bright light
- Overall tune-in depends on the current light situation
[B]2018.01.22 [/B]
- Sharpness according to the current light situation has been tuned
- Oneplus noise reduction was not enabled in extremely low-light picture, it should work now.
[B]2018.01.21 [/B]
- Luminance denoise is disabled now in Photo Mode. Was responsable of the "watercolor" effect. In counterpart, luminance noise is increased.
- To prevent luminance noise, I decrease sharpness according to the current light situation but 100% of the time, it's better than picture taken by original camera app. Pictures are now on par with GCam HDR+.
- Luminance denoise is enabled only in extremely low-light picture.
- Auto-HDR mode will now never enable HDR mode. Is now like a no-HDR mode.
[B]2018.01.13 [/B]
- Portait Mode works
- Modded process affects currently only the Photo Mode (not Portrait Mode, Pro Mode, etc ...)
- Modded process is now customizable with 3 modes : Sharpness level in good light, in low light and for front camera. 1 is the default level use by Oneplus. So if you want to disable the modded process, you should put level 1 in the three modes.
[B]2018.01.10 [/B]
- Panorama works now
- Settings menu revamped
[B]2018.01.09 [/B]
- Revert back to the original Oneplus process : better noise reduction
- Sharpness increased to counter-balance the "over-blurring" effect made by original Oneplus process
[B]2018.01.05 [/B]
- Based on version 2.5.21
- Use of the alternative Oneplus process
- Sharpness increased
- Switch added in Settings for use of original Oneplus process
[B]2017.12.15 [/B]
Based on version 2.5.20 coming from new OxygenOS Oreo update

Firstly, thank you for the mod
I'd like to see some sample shots. Does 5% really make a huge difference, even on a 100% zoom level? If it's anything like Photoshop's Quality Setting, 5% has just resulted in higher file size but minimal to no increase in quality.

Can you guys spot the difference in quality? One is taken with the modded Google camera and the other with Open camera. Can you guys tell me which is which? I know this isn't the best picture or best visual representation, I'll try to take better pictures when I find better examples, one does make a huge difference over the other though.
second is gcam
I have guessing games but the second one is the better photo.
One with stock Moto cam would be good too.
The second is most definitely a better picture, the way I see it if you look at the steering wheel you'll see some obvious color differences, the second is more full in color, if you look at the number pad in the lower right the second looks sharper. I say no matter what app it will always take good pictures in day light, night time/dark scenes are a different story though. This was using an 8.1 rom. The first picture is using the Google camera app the second is actually open camera with the camera2 API enabled and in DRO mode. I believe due to hardware limitations we'll never see true hdr+, but this is still pretty good imo. I've noticed also since 8.1 all my other apps that use the camera such as Snapchat have also greatly improved in camera quality.

Possibly, from past experience the camera2 API never worked correctly on older ROMs, I didn't have to enable the API in 8.1 just enable the feature in open camera.

Second definitely looks much nicer, I'm guessing chromatix? How well does it perform in low light situations?
It's actually the Google camera hdr+. Apparently aside from extending the DR, it has some magic sauce for creating a contrasty and sharp image. The raw out of this camera doesn't look that good.
Chromatix mod makes the camera look "normal" in all other modes (ie, Snapchat and AR apps no longer have that "ghosted' sharpening thing making it ugly). Even stock app looks better. So now it's on par with other similar class camera phones, but something about the HDR+ algorithm is just magic.

The steps to achieve a good capture using gcam is just too tedious for my day to day life, most of the pictures I take are spontaneous.

That's why I have and use both. Chromatix mod makes the stock processing bearable, and gcam is when there is something print worthy that's worth the effort. Also, I'm a photographer who shoots manual focus lenses and I've got kids, I know how to work under pressure spontaneously for a good shot.
So if I understand you correctly, were you able to get both Chromatix and GCam working simultaneously? I had read that the stock camera doesn't work on Oreo and moreover Chromatix only worked on the stock ROM. If not may I ask which ROM are you using?

Stock. Because camera functionality is more important than the latest OS to me.

True but the Gcam does have working autofocus as well as higher quality HDR+ under the Oreo ROMs now so I was wondering if I could throw Chromatix also into the mix
And even libmm for killer low light video

Latest and best #gcam for our X2 Pro.

1.4
GCam_7.2.010_Urnyx05-v1.4 works fine for me ... except that selecting an auxiliary camera will crash the app.
* Unfortunately, GCam therefore does not get access to the 64MP camera.
GCam_7.2.010_Urnyx05-v1.5 crashes right after taking a picture.

This gcam have the best photo quality for me with many configurable parameters. I tested lots of them and I think it's the best at this time for x2 pro.

Same for me, tried several versions and always came back to this one, unfortunately I still can't find any version working with slow motion and wide angle camera. Any suggestion??
What about selfie camera? Can they go above 4mpx?

I just followed this guy's guide and punch in the settings manually.
It does show improvement from the default app in terms of contrast and focus.
BUT it does not contain options to use the 64MP and Macro settings etc.... there are things missing in terms of all the hardware you can use.
So for now I'm using GCam if I need to take pics in normal camera mode, video and wide-lense, panorama or the amazing 360 view feature.
And use the default app for 64MP, Makro lens and slow-mo features. This version of GCam does crash on some of the options like Lens Blur, so it is not perfect.
i am very happy with the stock camera , on the latest update the quality is just fine

I'm using the same app, but I cannot find the ultra-wide lens option, I can only use the primary camera.
How to use the ultra-wide lens on the GCam app?

Ans I agree.
I tried to take pictures on low light conditions with the stock camera and compared with Google and ended up preferring the stock camera versions.
To be honest, sometimes AI overdoes things, but overall camera quality isn't bad. Even for interior pictures.

In which mode did you take the pict?
Parrot's new version is the best so far. Can't acesses the auxiliary cameras but with the right tweaks is very good.

Yes, if you want you can play with saturation and choose the best for you
Follow the prints:

GCam 8.2 compatible with Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite

Since it's hard to find some up-to-date guides for Google Camera on A2 Lite in 2021, I just wanted to share the latest info.
GCam 8.2 by the_dise appears to be fully compatible. There is only a small caveat: HDR+ and portrait mode are unsupported on the front camera, so having them on while using the front camera will silently fail.
Photo quality is better with GCam when you focus on the details, and especially night photos are unbelievably better. If you take pictures in the dark, it's a must.
For completeness -- it is necessary to have the Camera2 API enabled in order for GCam to work. Custom ROMs usually have this switch in settings (or even a QS tile), usually titled "Camera HAL", which you need to set to "HAL3". To enable it on the stock ROM, follow this guide by @h3r0n, but use this patched_boot.img by @Antho02 for the latest (11.0.18.0) firmware.
I installed it and for some reason i can't seem to find the setting for making a bokeh photo (where the subject is focused and the background is blurred). Does this version simply not have this mode or am I missing something?

That's not exactly what I mean. I have a different Gcam (GCam_7.0.009_DevMod) and it has "portrait" but also "Focus Effect" on the bottom bar.
it's the second mode i'm referring to.
It's the one where you take a picture and then move the phone up a bit. When enabling it, you get a quick flower icon on screen.

Curious, didn't know about that mode. I'll check it out. Perhaps they moved it or replaced it?

on the other GCam there is one additional mode to the left of "night vision", which is "focus effect". though it may have a different name in English (my phone is in Dutch).

Unfortunately that other GCam has the problem that it crashes when using the front cam and HDR

Apparently that was called "Lens Blur" in English and was removed in favor of the portrait mode. (I remember version 7.3 not having it, so somewhere before 7.0 and 7.3 it got removed.)

aha, that would explain it. although the other version has both "lens blur" and "portrait" to the left and right of "night vision".

It seems like that's how GCam updates work, they keep redundant features for a bit to make people used to them. The newest version has an additional "night sight" switch in the Camera mode, but it also still has the Night Sight mode -- most likely a similar situation.
Pls. Delete
Shows a Toast message, "DMGC is crashed" when taking a photo and then the app crashes after a few seconds.
I tried this on LineageOS 18.1
Works like charm for me
Using it with havoc os android 11, with HAL 3
