Battery life - total screen on time? how much would an extended battery improve? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Accessories

I have an old s4 mini lying around that I am planning to use as a baby monitor for a wyze cam. the battery is probably old and on my testing only showed a total screen time of just barely 3 hours. I was wondering if a new battery would give me better battery life and, if so, how much longer would an extended battery give me? keep in mind this is for total screen on time streaming video/audio feed from a camera, as it more than likely wont be used for much else.
Thank you

Is there some reason why you can not just hook up a USB charger to it, and leave it on while in use? (Maybe it gets too hot?)

I have a "new" s4 mini battery, it is "new" because it was bought a long time ago, but it was not used much.
It is the original, and it gives me between 3 and 4 hours of screen, in very extreme cases 5.

Energy Efficiency

I remember on my Wizard, that certain ROMs would drain the battery more quickly...there were actually radio patches to improve battery life, and they worked.
The DASH battery is problematic...it's a wonderful phone, crippled by an inadequate battery. I'm looking to extend its life, till I talk myself into an extended battery. (I've never been a fan of the "wart on its back" style of battery)
So, is there a ROM which is known for energy efficiency? I'm currently running Kavana.
Thanks for any guidance that can be provided.
Chuck
Energy Rom Save battery
Kavana is good and i really liked it but, battery was still draining like the factory t-mobile Rom. I installed the Energy Rom and the battery last about 10% more and is a much nicer Rom.
i recomend getting a extended battery i got a 2200 mah it looks fat but its worth it
i believe i saw a thread on it already but since this one is open, can you reccomend a good extended non fat battery? (like a site that sells them)
megacapacity.com is a big seller
thanks, i wonder is the 1050ma battery is worth it.

I've heard this is a good battery, is the fattest you can get without having to fatten up the phone. http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/basi13tmdhm.htm
I'm waiting for my battery to hit the crapper to get one.

I have this battery and it's good quality. I'd recommend them over the fat-ass ones that double the phone's size and screw up its attractive feel and profile.
I just finished my first full day with the Energy ROM and I can attest that it is more energy efficient than the Kavana ROM. Kinda' pretty, too, but I'm not sure where all the icons are, yet.
This is the first day in a while, that I didn't have to charge my phone mid-day.
NICE!
Now, I'll save up my pocket change and purchase an extended battery. A shame, since my brand new holster won't hold it, any more.
THANKS!

holy crap 1300ma and i thought the 1100 i saw on e bay was a good size. i just dont know if im comitted to the 40 bucks. gotta get a grip on how many days i can get on my dash on regular use.
Seidio 1300mah dash battery is the best purchase you could make
I really wouldn't give the 40$ price of the Seidio a second thought. It is well worth it if you do not want a unsightly buldge in your battery compartment, and want long battery life.
I don't use my phone much at all. I just browse the net a bit, make a few calls. I can usually grab the phone 7 am monday and it will last until friday 6pm. Before this with the standard battery it would last 7am till 3pm the next day. I don't know how I get almost 3 times the battery life but there you go.
If I stream music from the web it lasts about 4-5 hours. Or I listen to music stored on the flash almost all day and still have more than half the battery.

i think i might go with the 1100 off e bay for 12 dollars. i should be able to get three days off normal use. which is more than plenty.
Jeez...with normal LIGHT use, no bluetooth or wifi, and the regular battery, I'm lucky to get 8-10 hours of use. I admittedly live out in the country, but routinely have 3-4 bars of signal strength.
The battery is brand new, and head and shoulders above the original one, or I'd think it was a bad battery. Stock capacity, though.

Heres the truth yes some roms are drainers but the kavana on a S621 Pro is bomb for battery Life , you can overclock to 264 stable and the battery will last all day, in mind that you're not constintly on it, wifi batt life is 12 hours straight, set on 20 mins auto disconect and reconnect, you can spend some time through out the whole day on ur phones browsers on wifi, gprs i would imagen would last longer on our phones then wifi if u get a auto disconnector.., also huge tip, never charge your phone via USB, i wont go into why but this will kill your batteries Life.
U can turn off USB charging on the phone so syncing wont charge your phone, i recommand if u need to boost the battery use the wall charger!

1300 maH battery is the only battery you need for daily! use in My opinon.

Cheers
Amazing. No wifi, no bluetooth, and just AT&T cell phone use of 90 minutes or less in a day will kill my phone in under 10 hours.
That's with a fully charged, brand new, stock battery.
I live in a rural area, so maybe I'm having to use a higher radio power level...but even so, this battery life is just pathetic. This phone, I love. But, the battery life, I hate.
Apparently I've *got* to change to a higher mAh battery.

Yes all power settings are on, and scrn dimmer aswell, celetask i used before i found it improveed batt life.. when u used celetask to turn off the screen, celtalk will turn the screen off but keep wifi going.. for those who dont know this.. and yes Kavana the best 621 S620 rom.
But nevercharge phone at night wth ur USB on ur pc, never do that.
Will surge the battery when the battery is fully charged, will just keep pumping the battery, and i recommand disabling the charging option when u sync.

You can lower your brightness if it is not already at the lowest setting.
Unfortunately, the galaxy nexus has poor battery life. You could also try turning off data when you don't need it.

the screen is at lowest and it doesnt make sense turning of data if the problem is from screen right?
I'm having the exact same issue. Screen is totally eating up my battery life. It took 30 minutes for the battery to go down by like 10%. And the screen is 40% of the battery life issue.

Maybe I just don't use the screen as much as you, but I don't find this to be true for me. I find it has great battery life. I don't sit for hours with the screen on, but I do regularly text and check emails throughout the day, do a bit of web browsing, take some calls, and play some Angry Birds or other games in the evening. The screen is always at the top of the list for battery usage, but even on an extreme day I still have more than 30% battery left by the time I go to bed. I throw it on the charger and I'm ready to go again in the morning.
I disagree that the Galaxy Nexus has poor battery life, in general. I would argue that: all high-end phones have "poor" battery life because of all the things they do (especially 720p screens), your personal use of it consumes a lot of power and you could benefit from an extended battery, or you have a faulty device.
hi there, i do that exact same things with no games, so less usage but i get less than a day... i love the phone but the batery is just no working...
I don't understand why people don't get that when you have a screen that is 4.65'' it will destroy the battery life. My screen use is always at 60% or more but yet I still get good battery life. The screen is going to use the majority of your battery when compared to other things, that's just how it is.
sorry but thats not the point, when you pay 700 for a top phone, that is suposed to be the google experience to carry arround wiith you and you can only get 10 hours of battery time something went wrong in the process...
Most phones are $600 to $700, and name one 4g phone that will last more than 10 hours with moderate use and no extended battery, just not going to happen. You need to reset your expectations.
GN battery is giving lots of trouble, too. I picked up the phone from charge and it was 100% charged. ! hour of usage with 3g on. Usage includes 1 hours or music and reading of pdf books simultaniously and battery is dropped to 61%.

I think you should take a look at every other android phone that has come out with the same specs in the last year. Everything from the EVO 3d to the thunderbolt have their default battery's not last more than around 6-8 hours with constant use because of the screen & processors.
THis is why Verizon offered the extended batteries at a discounted rate right off the bat, because default batteries have never ever lasted that long in topof the line smartphones. FFS the new iphone 4s I've heard from a friend that their phones don't even last 24 hours.
I have a galaxy nexus, and mine has lasted... let me see.. one sec...1 day 3 hours and 25sec's with 35% left. (of course I have the extended battery) but here's the kicker: the extended battery has basically the same back as the regular phone does. so if they so desired, verizon could technically put out another extended battery just like all the rest of the phones, but they might not do that. I'm content with the battery life as it is almost identical as the droid X from which I came. The only difference is since I have a lot of un-updated apps for ice cream sandwich one of them is using "mediaserver" A LOT. I'm talking about that being the top of my battery draining with the screen being second. They both have taken ~20% with android OS itself taking 13, PlayerPro taking 13, and other random things like calls and txt msging taking ~10% each.
So I would suggest not trying to watch a lot of stuff on your phone while on battery, or don't expect your battery to survive long while watching stuff on that great screen
hymn thanks for the feedback so the only solution I see would be to go for a bigger battery. I'm from Portugal were could I buy one and whays the power?

If your screen usage is less than 50%, it be more worried about what else is killing your battery........

i noticed this on my tab 8.4LTE too, the battery simply drains away, almost close to rendering the tablet useless as I use this as my primary phone. tried playing online games and 30 mins later, it ate 40% of the battery (no unusual warm ups) i had this tab for almost a week now and it's still the same. i'm getting worried that i have battery issues

I was getting worried as well. Every time I've used it for anything other than movies my battery percentage has dropped like an aerodynamic rock. Browsing, games, magazines, etc. Movies (assuming because of the typically large amount of black pixels) look fantastic and the battery does quite with them, but for everyday consumption it left me concerned.
An hour ago I asked Amazon for an exchange which they did no questions asked. Perhaps round 2 will fare better. If not, I'll shed a tear as I give up this amazing display for another device altogether.

Yes. Lte version as well. I noticed that when he do wifi file transfers and other stuffs. Batt will drain as well.
I want a heads on comparison with his tab but it's hard since we use the tab differently. This is my primary phone while his is for browsing only. Tomorrow. I'll try to transfer s huge file via wifi and see if we'll have the similar percentage of battery drain. I already did the calibration as advised from another thread and it seems to work. A few more charge cycle might do the trick.

Same for me.... It takes forever to fully charge it (10,5 in)
I use a 10.5 LTE and it takes about 5 hours to fully charge. I recommend to switch it off while charging because when it's on you loose about 500mAh (also if the screen is off) and with a 2Ah charger if the battery sees (optimistically) 1.5Ah it takes 5h 20' plus the time required by the slow charge when it reaches 85-90%, so more than 6h.
Anyway I charge it every time I can when it goes under 50%, it's a big battery and needs a special care. Nothing to say about batterylife, excellent.
Most tablets/phones fast charge to 80% and then slow down for the last 20% , so if you don't need a full charge just grab it after it goes past 80% , your battery will live longer as well, as the closer you charge to 100% the more damage is done to your battery, it`s very small but it adds up.
Have a read of the link below, if you want to make the battery in your tablet live longer, if you have the money to easily replace it then don't worry, charge away

this tablet has a powerful screen.. and pressure sensore.
i am using this tablet for more than 1 year and its really awesome. when the screen is on the device uses more battery and its normal.
but when it is on sleep it can use the battery more than 2 days... 3220 mAh is very powerful battery for this tablet.
with CM 12 (Android 5) it will be best tablet i have seen and used.
I get 11hrs screen time from 100% to 1%. This includes a LOT of youtube videos however my brightness is pretty low. Standby time is good for me and nowhere near 10% a day let alone 8hrs. I reckon its about 3-5% a day for me max.

Do you use the stock firmware or a custom rom , because i am already purchased the tablet couple days ago and i am never have 11 hours screen on time yet
Till now i am get 6-7 hours screen on time in 2 days after unplugg from 100% to 15%, is that the normal ratio ?
Stand by and useage, seem pretty ill defined parameters. Especially to compare android to apple battery use. Does standby mean total on time, or total on time minus screen on, or total on time minus certain heavy use operations(which prob also includes screen on time)? Do you know purely screen on time for your ipad mini? That might be the best, first comparison to the note 10.1 ( since note does have a big screen but also big battery-8220 mah) that would be useful number wise.
Im not going to try but it would be interesting to know how long note 10.1 lasts in sleep mode only. I use mine to much to test only that. So ill see if I have any screens of my useage that I have made(prob now deleted), but I will also test to see how long I get with my average use next charge cycle (reported in screen on vs total up time).
Also if its is 10% in 8hrs (standby/sleep) thats still 80 hrs or over 3days. At the worst you say 20%,thats 40 hrs, a little less than 2 days. If those are true indicative number for the note 10.1 that represent a decent number of average users then your experience should fall somewhere in between, making it close to your experience with your ipad.

in ipad standby time means the time since you unplugged your device including running and sleeping time , usage time means the time ipad actually running = screen on time on android
i don not know if 6-7 hours of screen on time on my new note will be persistent or it will increase to 10-11 hours like the fellow up there after the rush period of usage of the the new device , anyway i will be very satisfied if it reach 9 hours :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Ok makes sense. Normally I use my note 10.1 without always fully charging and always turn it off at night. Ive tested by fully charging and leaving it on at night, so that it is in sleep/standby then. Last night I put it away with 29% battery and over 10hrs later it was on 28%. :victory: See screen shots. You can't actually read 10 hours, but if you look at total uptime and see how flat the battery curve is for half of that time you can tell I'm being very reasonably accurate. My screen use is 5hrs (screenshot) and that is what really took most of my juice. I was mostly watching 1080p youtube.
Almost the same here , hope for two or more hours after lollipop update inshaallah
Mine is the same about 1-2% if left on standby
Id suggest flashing a custom rom with a custom kernel. They figured out how to get 0.5-2% on stand by. Its alot of the bloatware that comes with the tablet and background apps which are running. Google apps also have a heavy drain on the battery during stand by. Using an app like Titanium back up to freeze or uninstall the apps will help with this problem.

[Q] Dead end with Samsung can I have your feedback please

TLR Anyone willing to see if their tab pro drains battery when fully powered off. Like overnight when you're sleeping or at work. Thanks
Hi,
I got a 10.1 tabpro back at the end of Jan. I thought it would be a massive step up from my Nook HD+ (rooted) but it's not. Not only is it slower than expected the battery life is atrocious. Samsung advertises over 2500 standby hours for their 10.1 tablet, I get 200. Also I get about 6 hour video, mp4 files, not 10 and I don't like a bright screen, I know companies exaggerate but this is daft. But it's the standby that's a problem, having to charge it every few days in case I want to use it is a big step down from my Nook.
It's been into Samsung repair 4 times now and I'm currently at a dead end.
Problem
It loses 0.5% an hour on standby even with wifi, gps, updates off etc
It loses 0.5% an hour fully powered off. Fully powered down. OFF, not on standby. Just to be clear
Compare this to my nook with a smaller battery capacity which loses less than 1% a day. I've tried turning off other android devices (mobiles & tablets) and none lose battery over 12 or 24 hours when powered off.
Current situation
It's been in 4 times, it has been returned with a squeaky corner which they've failed to repair and the retail box is torn and tatty like they played football with it.
I've now been told
I have spoken to our product specialist regarding this and the decline in battery life over the 24 hour period is not considered to be unusual. In the 12 hour period where the tablet was powered on, even though the screen is off and apps closed down the tablet will still be transmitting, searching for system updates or connecting to networks or wireless. The 12% decline in battery is considered normal for this kind of activity.

This doesn't address that wifi, gps, updates etc is turned off and drain whilst it's powered off. I responded 2 weeks ago but there has been no reply.
Feedback please
1. I've been all over the internet. I've tried greenify, I've tried battery calibration, there's a ridiculous amount of bloatware that I can't delete but I've reduced apps running as much as I can. Does anyone have any other ideas?
2. What's your tablet like, does it lose battery life when powered off? I've seen people posting on here about their 8.4 inch tabpro and they've put screen shots showing better standby battery life than my 10.1 with a much better battery capacity.
I've attached some screen shots, less than 3 days and it lost 33% doing nothing on standby.
I would really appreciate if anyone could feedback on battery life when switched off, is someone able to test theirs for me?
Many thanks,
Anna
Is someone willing to see if their tab pro loses battery even when powered off?
Thanks
Uh-oh. I hope this is unusual and anomalous. I'm actively seeking a replacement for my HD+. I want to love it. I *SO* want to love it but it infuriates me that the browser crashes so often. Yours? Which ROM?
Nook is fine, It's the Samsung that's utter pants. Nook battery loses less than 1% a day on standby and screen is good. Surprisingly I thought the octo core samsung wouldn't be laggy but it is, it's not that much better than the Nook.
I have cyanogenmod 11 I think. Yes the browser crashes but that's partly because many sites are badly designed and web 2.0 is badly implemented and I use Dolphin because I like the format however it's a terrible browser for crashing. The new Guardian site I struggle with on tablets and mobiles no matter what browser for example.
Anyone willing to test their tabpro for me????
I'm actually on my 3rd day with my 8.4 it's 10:35 pm and I still have 35% left

I don't understand. 3rd day of what, off, on standby, has it been used?
Mine loses battery at 0..5% an hour on standby and fully powered off. I'm trying to establish if other tab pro's have the same level of drain on standby and powered off. Can you give me more info please? Thanks

It's been into Samsung repair 4 times now and I'm currently at a dead end.

Take the rear cover off, disconnect the battery from its connector. Bring it to a repair shop where they can do a solder work. Ask them to re solder the battery connector, this rework only takes under 5 minutes. It will fix the problem of battery quick discharge. If the problem is still the same, you only need to replace the battery, cost only around $30 for new battery.

Thanks but it was only a few months old so well within warranty.
They replaced it with an tab s 10.5 (no more tabpro's available). Tab s gives me the battery life I expect and speed. Big difference between the two is the tabpro used up a lot of battery with 'tablet idle', well over 50% whereas on the tab s it's a few %. I think the tabpro didn't quite deliver, it was discounted quickly, the software wasn't right plus squeaky case, but so far imo they seem to have got it right with the tab s. Despite the lower capacity battery and bigger screen it lasted me over 5 days and that included setting up and installing apps. The tabpro by that point would have been long dead.
I'm glad you get a new replacement but this's a common problem of Samsung tablets . Be aware of this problem is the future of battery quick discharge. Most users just simply think this is a problem of battery.
