Last night I noticed Play asking me to update an app called Smart Device Manager. Having no idea what the app was, or why it was on my phone, I read the description:

With a bit more searching, it looks like it's a background utility that comes preinstalled on our phones. It's a helper for parental controls to manage what your children (or employees, I suppose) are doing, as well as lock your phone when you're driving to discourage talking or texting while driving. Accomplishing this requires some pretty nasty permissions. Granted, it's obviously not CIQ, and it shouldn't be doing anything at all unless you activate and pay for the appropriate services, but I still don't want it on my phone, if for no other reason than it may be using up some juice.
It appears there was some sort of bug with the change to Google Play that prompted many (everyone?) with the app to update it, even though you have no reason to update it unless you're actually using the service(s) (Source). As it's a system app, you can uninstall it with Titanium if you are rooted. I've done so and it hasn't hurt anything thus far.
Just figured I'd let a few people know what was up, in case they get the notification as well. And if it's already common knowledge, *shrug* I guess I wasted a few minutes of my life

What's weird is that I'm running Blazer Rom, have never installed this service and google play is reminding me every day that I need to "upgrade it."
Somehow must have been left in Blazer.....

I think it's a Sprint/Google agreement that is going to show up in our market suggestions no matter what ROM we run, the key is just ignore the suggestion and don't install.
Thanks for the info. I missed this one when I was getting rid of the bloatware. Even if it's not activated on my end, I'd rather not give them one more route of easy access to controlling my device. I suppose it's a good feature for parents/employers, but can you imagine if service providers started shutting down your phone (essentially airplane mode) if your were traveling over a certain speed?
You can delete this from system/app and it will stop alerting you in the market. Its actually labelled smartdevicemamager.apk in system/app.

updated it last night as well running blazer 4.0, didn't know what it was just don't like "updates available" popping up on boot

Sprint reps said the service has always been on the phone but the recent Google Play Store update caused the update to show up. Supposedly Location Labs (the company created the software) is looking into why it is showing up as an update....

Everytime I run Samsung Apps it asks me to install Samsung Push Service and Samsung Ad Service.
Does anybody know what these are?
Seems like annoying bloatware to me so I click cancel but it's starting to get annoying as it pops up every time!

You can't stop it... Worse, in the latest Samsung Apps update, it'll be automatically installed without your concern and will constantly pushing ads to your phone, make the phone hot and battery drain fast... I removed the Samsung Apps (and its companion SamsungUNA) after that...

I'm pretty sure I have the latest version installed as when I ran it it said I needed to update and I did. But it doesn't auto install these for me....?
It just pops up every time I open it asking me to install them.
Maybe someone could mod it so we only get Samsung Apps an not the crap that comes with it.........please....... lol
It would be a shame to have to uninstall it because you can actually get some top premium priced games for free, which is the only reason I use it.

I feel like it automatically downloads when on WiFi and connected to power even though there's no setting for power connected.

My setup: running Oreo 8.1 May update, rooted, Flash kernel, TWRP 3.2.1-2 custom recovery, a few Magisk modules (see sig).
Troubleshooting: rebooted, plugged phone in, allowed all permissions and ability to modify system settings, I've changed it to auto-update apps "at any time" (both mobile data & wi-fi), when updating to May patch I wiped the System partition and flashed the May Full Factory image, cleared Play Store app cache, cleared Play Store app data, uninstalled Play Store updates, Disabled Play Store - then Enabled, uninstalled Google Play Services updates / reset to factory version, and finally manually updated Google Play Services.
Anyone, any thoughts/ideas/advice?! I had hoped the last 3 months' security patch updates might fix this, but since it hasn't, my last hope is here...! :begging:
P.S. I am hoping that flashing a full factory image with the -w intact/included is not the last and only option...

I've said it before that, for me at least, I've noticed it only auto updates when plugged in even if I have plenty of battery like greater than 50%. I'm set to auto update on WiFi only. I'll go into the app store and see I have a handful of update, plug in, and see them to start downloading.

I eventually noticed as well that it only updates when plugged in. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with how charged the battery is but I haven't looked too closely at that.

Yeah...I had really high hopes earlier as well, but found that it wasn't TB. Because there is a setting in the preferences that deals with auto-updating and it seems that, by default, it sets it to Disabled, but even after Enabling it, it hasn't gotten auto-update to work.
I had inadvertently thought it worked because, at the same time as the TB discovery, I reset to factory settings both Google Play Store and Google Play Services (as I have many times before). This seems to have the auto-update work once, but I can't get it to replicate or do it again after this first initial time. Also, it's hard to debug, troubleshoot, and test because I have to wait some time for a number of apps to need updating before I can see if it truly works or not.
I hope someone has an idea or thought that might explain why or help reach an explanation...

Yeah it's so agitating?
I think I figured it out....[GUIDE] included!
I think I figured it out (at least in my case) -- but I think it's probably applicable to most any other(s) who are having the same issue...
First of all, if you have Titanium Backup, make sure to set Default auto-update app to Enabled
Go to Menu
Preferences
Go to Restoration Settings
You will find Default auto-update mode in the section; 4th on the list within that section
Go to Google Play Store App Info
Clear Cache (inside Storage)
Clear Data (also inside Storage)
Disable the app
Click OK when warned that it will "replace this app with the factory version..."
Go to Settings, Apps & Notifications, See all ### apps
At the top right, select the 3 verticle dots and select "Show system"
Find and select Google Play Services
Clear Cache
Go back to App Info (back arrow; arrow pointing left), at the top right, select the 3 vertical dots and select "Uninstall updates"
Click OK when warned that it will "replace with the factory version..."
Reboot
Download the latest Google Play Services
HERE'S one place you can find it and/or you can Google search to find other copies yourself...
Pick the newest latest version (beta if you wish to be on bleeding edge but stability not ensured)
Choose the Android 8.0+ variant
Download the "arm64 + arm" & "nodpi" one
Install the latest Google Play Services using the file you downloaded
Reboot
Go back to Google Play Services App Info (show all ### apps, show system, etc.)
Clear Cache (of Google Play Services)
Go back to "show all ### apps"
Select the drop-down menu and select Disabled
Select Google Play Store
Clear Cache and Data (of Google Play Store inside Storage)
Plug Phone to charger
Launch Google Play Store
Select the 3 stacked horizontal lines on the top left and go to Settings
Select and configure how you wish to auto-update apps
Click on Play Store version (all the way on the bottom)
After pressing OK (it'll most likely say Play Store will update soon), it may or may not begin downloading components for the Play Store. After a bit, it may or may not actually begin auto-updating...
In the few instances I've done this and on the 2 pixel 2's I have access to, the auto-updating may begin soon after (within 2 minutes), or eventually (sorry for vague description, but I had thought these steps didn't work and wasn't paying attention and after a while, I saw it auto-updating!).
Also, it still seems that it'll auto-update only while plugged in charging. That particular bug/requirement hasn't been resolved, but as this is specifically an auto-update troubleshooting thread.......
Hope this helps any/all who is having the same issue. I hope (but am doubtful) that this will work for everyone; but if it doesn't, I'd have to say that it might be something with your ROM (stock or custom), settings (system or another app interfering [As I found out TB actually might/does]), or some very unique bug because this is probably the most comprehensive app reset for Google Play. It's kind of overkill, but you might have some luck going the "last resort" route and flashing the Full Factory image in hopes it'll fix the system and app comparability issues (if that is indeed the reason...).
In the end, I hope this helps any who might be having this issue....:victory::highfive:
I have this same issue. I tried wiping Google Play cache/data and had a hell of a time getting it to show my installed apps after that. I don't have TB installed so I'm not really sure what's going on. It's a PITA having to manually update apps all the time.

Yeah....but maybe uninstalling Google Play store (not just cache and data and actually reverting to an older version) and doing the same (sorta) towards Google Play Services is the critical difference (as shown in my guide)... Hopefully that sorts ya out...!:good:

I'm set to auto update over WiFi, and I've never actually paid attention.. but my apps are always updated and I get the notification stating that 13 apps were updated... So it must be working on my end?

Yes, that's "the dream" . For us/me, that wasn't happening -- for whatever reason; whether it was set to do it over WiFi or both mobile & WiFi.
I used to not pay attention either, until I went and checked and kept finding a list of 50+ apps needing to update and/or all these apps were outdated every 3 or so days! Then I realized I hadn't been getting that which you are experiencing... And, as @corywf as stated, it can get quite tedious and annoying having to manually "Update all" every few days just to keep all the apps up-to-date! (Curious note: I never realized how many times in a small number of days certain apps actually update; it's like every 2 days! Which is nice and good to say towards the app as the devs are continuously working on it -- Instagram, Nextdoor, and Chrome come to mind -- but certainly rather annoying when manually "keeping up") Especially when we've all experienced these things happening automatically and in the background...

That's good! I believe it was around the same time I noticed the issue as well (although as said in my last post, this is usually something that is in the background and done automatically so I can only say it was around this point). I'm glad flashing the latest update worked -- I'm wondering, did you flash a Full Factory or an OTA? -- and hopefully it works for others. But, unfortunately, I had Full Factory flashed to the May update with no such luck. It took my guide (a little up above) to fix it on me and my gf's Pixel 2 (non-XL)...

Totally satisfied with 11.2.9.9 and wish to disable updates for good-ish. I did this on my Pixel 3XL and needed to jump through some hoops to stop the insistent nag pop up but got it done with help from XDA good guys. Like the Pixel, the notification does not allow to be silenced or disabled so need to dig deeper. I don't want to delete or uninstall the updater service but am open to freezing it if that won't cause any other issues. I'm rooted of course. Help would be appreciated, Thanks
I'm not sure turning down the already sporadic security patches released for Android phones is a good idea to start with, refusing them while rooted is an even worse plan.

That would be reasonable if the betas weren't explicitly opt-in. Blocking consumer release updates is an entirely different kettle of fish.

My phone is 90% de-googled so my biggest security risk has been neutralized.
I usually freeze the update service app in between updates to avoid the nagging while I'm waiting on a full zip to be released, or if it's just an inconvenient time for me to mess with it. It has never caused any issues other than the obvious: if you try to select System Update from Settings while frozen it will force close. Just unfreeze the update service when you're ready to update.
That said, I'm in agreement with other folks who say not taking security updates on a rooted device "ever" is generally a bad idea. New kernel exploits are discovered all the time, and plenty of core system packages have the potential for vulnerabilities.

I would keep my phone updated but the ColorOS 12 update pretty much ruined the perfect experience. I'll update in a few months. Hopefully, they'll fix all the issues by then.

Yes thanks for the reminder this is possible. I went ahead and froze com.oneplus.opbackup. My setup is safely locked in until I decide it needs to be changed!

Just use a package disabler, a ADB edit or if your rooted you have even more apps to block OTA updates.
Security in real life isn't an issue with Android 9 or higher unless you do something stupid. This stock N10+ has been running on Android 9 for over 2 years with no updates.
The current OS load is over 1.5 yo, still fast, stable with minimum maintenance. I take a few precautions especially with app installations and downloads. Android 9 and higher are reasonably secure even if Google claims otherwise.
So enjoy your current platform for as long as you want. Don't let updates break your phone... they sure as hell can and do.
Redundantly backup all critical data to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. Time stagger backups to them incrementally as an added precaution. Have a plan in place for password resets and bank accounts (which are insured from fraud anyway).
In the case of malware if you can't completely isolate and delete it within an hour or two, go full nuke and reload. It takes far less time to reload then it does to attempt to optimize and adapt to a new OS version.
Fools leave in fear, pragmatists live within reality.
Don't ever update to Android 12 then. Remember, you have been warned. No matter what, stay on Oxygen 11

Both you guys, EXACTLY! Ran Android 9 for 3 years on my rooted Pixel 3XL, no updates past 9/19 no issues no regrets.
11.2.10.10 is safe. But I dont update to A12 soon.
You can disable the updates very easy.
1st: Settings -> System -> System Updates -> Top right the gear -> Disable Auto download over Wifi
2nd: Settings -> System -> Dev. Options -> Disable "Automatic system updates"

See the thing is this doesn't stop the random often reoccurring pop-up nag that prompts to download the update. The fear there is the potential for an accidental tap. I don't want the giant update file hanging out on my phone ready to spring into gear at the slightest wrong move on my part. Maybe the tap would be interpreted by the phone as an overide to the 'disable' option selected in Dev Options. Don't know, don't want to find out.
Then use a fire wall and allow apps you want. I never got a update notification since I have the phone. I always updated it by myself.

Yes goofy to quote myself but wanted to post an update that sadly this only worked for about a month then the nags returned even though the com.oneplus.opbackup service was frozen. Getting the system update nags every other day after they stopped for a month. Gotta figure this out, I'm sure that sinister google has their hand in this someway!

I have not had the issue. I happened to manually check yesterday and the Play Store was already in the process of updating three apps that needed it. Have you tried rebooting?
I have the same issue. I usually force close and clear cache for the Play Store and then updates appear.
I feel like having less updates than usual but I'm thinking it can be related with the holidays. Probably developer teams are reduced due holidays and the remaining ones don't want to be working extra hours on hotfixes hahaha

Do you refer to
a) you get no updates in general (right now)?
b) you get updates shown as available, but the system does not successfully automatically update them without your input?
A. That's because we just came out of christmas holidays. Most firms have closed/are running on low staff. There are no updates, because there are no updates.
B. That's a "common" problem and in 96% of the cases it's caused by singular apps being marked as "no auto update" - to check this, you have to go into
-> Open Play Store
-> Click on your profile (upper right corner, your GProfile icon)
-> Manage Apps & device
-> Manage
-> Click on any app
-> Click on three dots (upper right corner)
-> Check if "Enable auto update" is checked
For some stupid reason, backups can mess this up - and sometimes if even only 1 (!) app has been flagged as "no auto update", it will halt the entire update process.
And no, there is no easy way to streamline all apps as "auto update" - you will have to MANUALLY go through every app in that menu to find the culprit.
One of the things Google made worse over the years...

a) you get no updates in general (right now)?
b) you get updates shown as available, but the system does not successfully automatically update them without your input?
A. That's because we just came out of christmas holidays. Most firms have closed/are running on low staff. There are no updates, because there are no updates.
B. That's a "common" problem and in 96% of the cases it's caused by singular apps being marked as "no auto update" - to check this, you have to go into
-> Open Play Store
-> Click on your profile (upper right corner, your GProfile icon)
-> Manage Apps & device
-> Manage
-> Click on any app
-> Click on three dots (upper right corner)
-> Check if "Enable auto update" is checked
For some stupid reason, backups can mess this up - and sometimes if even only 1 (!) app has been flagged as "no auto update", it will halt the entire update process.
And no, there is no easy way to streamline all apps as "auto update" - you will have to MANUALLY go through every app in that menu to find the culprit.

From Android 4 i have not been able to auto update from play store(can't remember what it was called back then) and today still not able to.
there were so many updates in December (on the play store). I know because I check daily, and there was a ton. let the devs rest for a few weeks.
It's not about vacations etc. I just did a force close and clear cache one minute ago and boom....3 updates appeared.
"Notify when updates are available for apps " is the issue for me. I don't use auto update for apps, never have on any phone.

Of the three profiles on my up-to-date Pixel 4 XL, the third one stopped getting updates to the installed apps in that profile, i.e. any update notifications or manual check for updates in the Play Store failed to pick up updates to most or or all of the apps unique to that profile.
I can't tell when this behaviour started, but it must have been some weeks ago. Going each app in the Play Store showed updates and noted that I was running a beta version (which was correct), but to update required updating to a non-beta then (re)joining the beta. Subsequently these apps have received updates via notification and check for updates in the Play Store.
