Can we install indian custom roms? - Redmi Note 9 Pro (International Model) General and

It looks like the international forum is pretty dead compared to indian, there are no non-miui custom roms at all.
Is it possible to install indian model custom rom on global version? Thanks.

There's a reason for that.
Not too long ago we had one combined forum for ROM development but when Joyeuse was released, (Curtana was released a couple of months earlier), custom ROM rookies who weren't sure what they were doing, were bricking their phones by flashing the wrong device specific tools and/or ROMs.
A retrospective change was made to the forum structure to try and help the rookies and the result was the separation of Indian and Global versions.
A few short weeks later, a smart developer unified the device trees for both versions, (Joyeuse and Curtana), so that ROMs, and tools, could be built that would work on either device without issue. These ROMs are tagged with the code "Miatoll".
So long story short, due to history of the forums, it appears that there is very little development for Joyeuse, but in reality, nearly all Note 9 developers are now using the stable Miatoll tree and there are just as many ROMs available for both the Indian and the Global versions of the Note 9 Pro.
Hope this helps clarify your, (and anyone else that follows), concerns around ROM development for the Global version.

Thank you for the detailed answer
I'm kinda confused about the kernels now..In a ROM post, do I simply install the kernel given, even though it's not saying that it's specifically only for Joyeuse?
For example here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-9-pro/development/gsi-t4165873
"2. Download vbmeta from here and flash it in fastboot like this:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta_note9s.img (IF YOU DONT DO THIS STEP, VOLTE AND OK GOOGLE WONT WORK!)"
I'm not really sure what is vbmeta, and it also says note9s, so once again just trying to verify if it's ok and I won't brick my phone

My suggestion would be to forget about GSI's and choose one or the 20 or so ROM's that have been built speficially for our device.

By specifically built rom you mean unified rom, or one that specifically states that supports joyeuse?

Either of Miatoll or Joyeuse build will be good.
I'm not a dev, but I believe ROM's built on the Miatoll device tree may even be slightly better than Joyeuse due to the wider take up of development.

I'd love to see one. But we're short of devs especially from countries which need VoLTE.
And if you were following the other topic, exploring me as a potential developer to take over, I'm sorry to inform that there's no VoLTE here either...

So does it means, P2 also won't be getting VOLTE ?

You act as if we are running a custom radio image on custom ROMs... we aren't.
In general, the radio image is, in 99% of all devices out there, always a unmodified one taken from the stock ROM.
In fact, most custom ROMs don't even touch / flash / modify the radio image in any way, LineageOS for example doesn't even bundle the radio image in the ZIP file, as it assumes your phone already has a working radio image installed (coming from a stock ROM).
So no, the radio image is not the issue at hand.
Baseband is a totally different thing.. and people are already messing their phones because of it by flashing things that is not supposed to be flashing. If VoLTE is not meant to be because they're two different models with two different network.. just let it be for now.

Pre-Sales question

Hi all,
I am completely new to the Xiaomi world (I prefer stock Android and easy root usually), but I got an excellent offer to buy this beast today.
I will buy this device, only if the following is possible.
- Unlock bootloader
- Root with Magisk
- Pass Safetynet check
- Install AFWall
- Install Adaway
Has anybody done this yet?
I don't want to know "how" (I can ask/figure out that later). I just want to know whether it is possible/relatively straight forward?
Thanks!

Yes, all done. Very easy and straightforward. Stick to xiaomi.eu roms for best miui experience or latest AICP Oreo treble rom for 95-99% working Android stock experience. Currently on 8.8.9 xiaomi.eu and have all except afwall on mine since I don't use that app.
I recommend the 6gb/128gb from TradingShenzhen with xiaomi.eu installed - it will have unlocked bootloader right out of the box - many of us went with this version. Easiest/best experience.
If you go with any other version, check out my buggy vendor thread to flash to xiaomi.eu rom easily.

Quick follow up question. Is it possible to keep encryption on the userdata partition with the latest TWRP? I really like if my data is encrypted.

Looks like I "only" need to wait 360 hours to unlock

I have a three more questions now.
#1 Is there a reason not to use this global 9.6.7.0 ROM (other than the ads). Are there any big bugs in this global version? If not, I will probably start rooting this version first Should I update the global version?

There seem be to many newer versions than that. And also a "MIUI 10.0/10.1 STABLE RELEASE" (oct 24th). Is there a reason you are still on that old version?
#3 I understand not having ARB is better if you need to downgrade (without bricking). Is there a reason to downgrade frequently in the Xiaomi world? Is this because people need to switch back and forth between the Chinese and global ROM? And since I have the global version, can I ignore ARB?

1) EU is just better (has more features baked in - universal face unlock, theme store, etc), less bloated, and more updated.
2) Stable release is fine, but I just prefer beta updates - faster fixes, more features introduced, and tested more by users = more feedback.
I'm on 8.8.9 eu strictly because:
a) It's pretty flawless for me.
b) If it's not broken why fix it? I haven't seen anything worth jumping ship for.
c) It's NON-ARB; I'll only upgrade to ARB if and once I see a better working pie release (coming soon supposedly) because a data wipe may be necessary. I'll use migrate app (faster than titanium backup) to backup all my apps and then restore them onto the new rom.
3) Honestly, having ARB is not a big issue especially since the updated EU roms are solid. However, my points back in number 2 still stand. You can flash to and back from treble gsi roms on ARB and NON-ARB without any issues. However, no matter what anyone tells you, gsi roms for our phone are not perfect. They're only 95% usable. They are still missing mono speaker, volte, and some other things that some say are working without evidence or thorough testing. @MrColdbird just tested a few of the latest if not all of the gsi roms, and he's in agreement with me - they're almost there, but not 100% yet. Stick to xiaomi.eu roms for a complete rom. Just my humble opinion .
If you have any other questions, just ask. I hope this was informative enough.
@opasha @MrColdbird
Have u guys tried latest AOSPExtended Pie GSI? I loved this rom on my previous device.
https://downloads.aospextended.com/download/treble_gsi/pie_arm64_aonly/AospExtended-v6.0-arm64_aonly-20181117-0000-OFFICIAL.zip
Currently I'm also on 8.8.9 run and waiting for Pie build.
Anyone tried cutting of files from firmwareupdate folder to avoid ARB activation.
I've found solution that cutting firmware folder, leaving only files associated with modem shouldn't break anything and won't trigger ARB. Is it working on latest eu builds?
Files that allegedly have to stay in firmwareupate folder to not trigger arb:
.BTFM.bin
cmnlib.mbn
cmnlib64.mbn
devcfg.mbn
dspso.bin
NON_HLOS.bin
splash.img

Regarding

I was under the impression that EU is non-arb by design?
https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/do-eu-roms-remove-anti-rollback.47145/#post-451617
I guess I haven't understood this ARB stuff 100% yet? And obviously this is a moving target. Posts only one or two months might be already outdated haha
Having said that, you convinced me about Eu.
And I guess in 15 days there will be new developments anyway (no pun intended).

Is there more ROMs?

I recently purchased an tab S4 just an update from my previous Samsung tablet. I was wondering is there more ROMs for this tablet or ROMs currently in development? I noticed theres like 2 ROMs for this tablet. I have a note 8 and I'm currently running deluxerom on and it, and I really enjoy the tweaks and customization I'm able to do. I was looking for a same kind of feature for my tablet. Would greatly appreciate the answers I'm looking for. Thanks!

Pretty much zero support. You can get a few 9.0 GSI ROMs to boot, but they all have issues. Mine has been sitting around since it was purchased while still using my old 2014 model.

I had thought the same thing, but it seems the S3 is the last tablet to get real support.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development
Some of the ones for 9 will work, but most features won't work too well, if at all.
You might be able to get another rom to work, I know I had no luck. Even trying ones with similar hardware, they all failed to even flash since the booting numbers are different.
Kind of have to be satisfied with Samsung, half baked custom roms or sell the thing.

Hey Veekay I tried it and you're right unfortunately I came across the same issue as you brother
Now I'm stuck and I need help sorting my device out, was wondering if you knew this issue or could help?
When I got the stock firmware back and then when I flash TWRP with odin after going into TWRP I get 0mb as internal
so when I format and then go back into my load up the screen after SAMSUNG says "verification failed" and then reset
on the bottom. I tried other options as well. Without even wiping on TWRP the devices boots up into the setup wizard for the firmware fine
but after I wipe TWRP so I can get access to my internal drive my samsung boots into that verification reset screen. Got any clue as to how I can
resolve this issue? Thanks a bunch!

Yup, its unfortunate that there isn't much community support for this device. The Tab S4 is Project Treble supported and a few GSI ROMS do work. But as others have said they are unstable and not for use as a daily driver. We have a few discussion threads here talking about them.

you can install a Gsi rom, with two ways
Via TWRP, or Via Fastboot : https://www.xda-developers.com/flash-generic-system-image-project-treble-device/ (Tab S4 is a-only arm64)

You are going to have to just wipe it and start over from square one, unless you made a TWRP backup before starting all of this.
Download and flash the latest stock rom from recovery and then you can load twrp again.
I was looking at the possibility of using GSI's on some devices, and while they can offer new life to older devices, they're not entirely stable all the time unless you're willing to make your own changes. I know Lineage has made some excellent progress, but it's not fullproof yet and I wouldn't try it unless you're willing to not use your device as a daily use device.
I had an extra T-Mobile Revvlry which is basically a rebranded Moto g7 Play that I installed the Lineage GSI image and it works fairly well. However, this is more the exception to the rule and Moto devices, I feel, are far simpler in design vs certain Samsung devices. It also had a ton of trial and error involved for me to get it up and running properly.
Is it possible as the s4 becomes older, more people buy it and Samsung stops releasing official updates that someone will come along and create a ROM for it? Or is it more like Samsung locked the bootloaders and its close to impossible to write a ROM for it? Is it still possible to root the s4?

yes,all Gsi Roms still have various problems unfortunately...
my opinion is: stay to stock rom for now....you can "uninstall" many applications if you want & without root, via "samsung package disabler"(paid) from playstore, or with this way:

TWRP, Dev support ++ for the OP7T in future

Times are changing for oneplus. Seems like software support will be worse in the years coming.
I love my oneplus 7T. It's nearly the perfect phone for me. Right now I'm on the latest open beta, rooted with arter97 kernel. Amazing experience. Could easily keep this phone for many more years to come..
But.. If official updates is lacking, we need proper ROMs, and a functional twrp and good dev support. Is there any chance this will change in the future? Or is official twrp dead?
To the developer community out there, please correct me if I'm wrong.
The biggest obstacle to a "functional TWRP" is the decryption issue that OnePlus will hopefully address. If that gets resolved, we should see the ROM community take off. I agree that the 7T is a phenomenal phone and damned near perfect. That being said, I'd give almost anything to see Paranoid Android on this phone!
Twrp works to flash roms. Try looking into GSI for now since the twrp we have now does not support oos backup but we have a few roms guys.
What is a proper ROM according to you?
There are very stables ROM in the development section.
And you don't need TWRP at all. Convenient sure, but absolutely not needed.

You can push the zip to /cache and flash fine. TWRP is not the reason for 'lack' development. An *actual* dev would have been able to build a ROM without any need of TWRP.
There are already good ROMs here in XDA, and you can find more on Telegram.
That being said, TWRP has made lots of progress on Android 10 and 11. Dynamic partitions should be fully handled, and fastbootd tools should be working too.
Just sync the sources alongside mauronofrios tree and test away.
As said upper, twrp is not an issue for devs, neither for us to flash roms
Amount of roms simply relies on the amount of people having this device. As OP released several phones (7, 7T, 7 pro), it seems normal we have less roms.
As a counterpart, Android's updates make it more easy to port roms, and most devices now share bigger part of dev tree.
AFAIK Paranoid Android 11 was just released on 8 & 8T.
7 & 7T will follow pretty soon, just be patient. Not every dev team has all devices to build up roms.
By the way, such topic won't change anything, maybe try financially supporting devs or learning to port roms by yourself.

ROM suggestion?

I take photos quite a lot and I don't play games that much. Any rom suggestion for me?
I mostly use google apps personally and for university!

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite). It's okay with stock kernel but I use agni kernel. Here's a page with many resources for curtana in one place but be careful before installing anything you haven't seen anyone using.
Curtana Premium
Almost forgot... You can use gcam for slightly more detailed photos than miui camera. There are numerous versions. Check out curtana photography in telegram. Personally I only use gcam for raw images. But for quick shots that you won't be doing pixel peeping on, stock camera is enough.
Hello ftriends, I'm a little confused, are all the ROMs on CurtanaGang valid for the international, European version of the phone? I am very interested in this. I have a new Redmi Note 9 pro bought in Romania. Thanks

That website is not known to a lot of people. Roms made for miatoll will work on your phone. Be careful to NEVER install a rom that's made for curtana only.
The roms listed usually have a support or discussion page linked so look for it. Information in the changelogs can also help you decide. Just make sure that you confirm a rom will work on your phone. The installation guide or the rom thread will usually tell which phone the rom is made for. Look for it and post questions there if possible.
Oh! You said you have a new phone... Don't do anything regarding flashing ROMs before you unlock the bootloader.

Thank you @twistyplain for your detailed answer, I understood. For now my big-big problem is unlocking bootloader... I'm trying hard for three weeks without any result...everytime it saying "wait for 168 hours..." I know I must not sign out from Mi account, don't reset phone...etc... but nothing, same 168 hours to wait... I don't know what to do anymore... any advice is welcome! Thank you.

Thanks again @twistyplain, I know all these steps to unlock ... it doesn't work unlocked. My phone came with MIUI-11 but it was updated to MIUI-12. Probably because the SIM card is not activated on their server (server error ... etc) and is not activated after restart, reset (three times!). Maybe it will work with another SIM card...I'll try it...

I think that's the problem. You must make sure that the sim card to be activated is able to send an international SMS (Mandatory) and it should (maybe) be the active data sim. When you try to activate it make sure you're using mobile data using that Sim card to be safe. Also, try to activate it without another Sim installed.
My primary Sim card activated properly the first time but Sim 2 has never successfully activated. Every time I reboot it tries to activate Sim 2 but always fails. I just wait for it to fail and clear the error message because it affects nothing.

Hi there, so where can i found those?
I'm on the same train, i'm searching a debloated firmware for my new 9 pro.
From what i gather through forums and posts is that the Havoc-OS is the custom firmware+official with the less issues, unless those you mention are better.
I searched both rom subforums but i can't find them.
The closest i find is this which for some weird reason doesn't have as many posts as one could expect Lol
[ROM]-MiuiMiX_2.2.0_joyeuse-[Android 10 - MIUI 12]
I'm not involved in MiuiMiX team nor its development. I only love and would like to share this fantastic work. Hope you enjoy it. * Your warranty is... still valid? * * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, * thermonuclear...

Havoc is AOSP meaning it is based on vanilla Android (not miui). It has a large thread on xda so you can browse that to know about the rom. Official means that it's the one recognized by havoc os developers -- not that it's in any way affiliated with xiaomi. The AOSP rom that most people agree is better than most is Evolution X. However, better than other AOSP roms doesn't mean it's better than miui based ROMs. I always use roms based on stock hence the reason i recommend them. They're generally more stable and require much less effort to get going.
Regarding the source of MiuiMix, you can follow the telegram link in the thread you just posted just under "We follow also other devices, you can know more and update in our telegram channel". I won't repost the link because I'm not sure it's even allowed. When you get there search for your device codename. For instance mine is curtana so i just type #curtana in the search box snd i see a list of the roms released for my device.
Miui eu has a dedicated website so look for it.

Thank you for all the info!
Yeah, i think i will go the same root and use MiuiMix which is a stock based rom, that's why i asked where did you get the ones with miui 11 since i can't find them on sourceforge.(there is only a curtana 11.0.9)
I think i made up my mind and since i have joyeuse i will go with the MiuiMix miui 12 pointed in the thread linked above.

Good choice. Im using it right now. It seems to be a nice rom. Better than eu in ram management. Dark theme has some bugs but I don't use it because it has no energy saving for ips display.
Hi, i'm waiting for official Pixel Experince custom rom for the Redmi note 9 pro (joyeuse), I asked them on their twitter account they told me to wait, you can do the same it will convince them to do

I upgraded to MiuiMix 12.0.2 and it's been perfect for almost three weeks now. I don't use dark mode because it's the only bug i know to exist with this rom. And I can't blame the MiuiMix devs because it's a xiaomi fault.
