A simply way to show Ambient Display only on notification - Google Pixel 4 XL Themes, Apps, and Mods

No notifications waiting makes the screen off and AOD not showing.
Recieving or already having a notification shows AOD.
On top of that you can select which apps are important to you to behave this way for their notifications and ignore others, also can be set similary for charging = on / not charging = off.
Yet it has no impact on battery maybe it will use like additional 0.009%
1- Install Always On Edge App
2- in Main settings section -> enable With AOD invisible -> but show AOD on notifications.
3- Main settings -> optional permissions -> AOD lighting controller.
4- save.
And that is it no need to enable any other permission or feature. However, please note that if you enable edge lighting then timing will be applied.

No granular ability to remove notifications for select apps from lockscreen.

Running: lineage-14.1-20170622-nightly-m8-signed.zip
To start - I do know that there are several ways to prevent lock screen notifications.
1) In the main Notifications settings I have options for "On the lock screen":
- "Show all notification content"
- "Don't show notifications at all"
Of course this is all or nothing, so it isn't really very flexible.
2) Then, if I turn on Power notification controls I can set an app to "Level 2" which includes:
- Prevent full screen interruption
- Never peek
- Never make sound or vibrate
- Hide from lock screen
- Show at the bottom of the notification list
However this is almost totally useless as if I choose to restrict an app to Level 2 because I don't want it on the lock screen, I lose the ability for those notification to have any real type of visibility outside of the lock screen.
It appears that stock N has a switch for each app to control whether that app can show notification on the lock screen or not. Here is one such example.
This is very problematic for an app such as Gmail (or any mail app). I want my e-mail notifications to always make a sound/vibrate, etc...but I don't want the details of the e-mails to show in the lockscreen.
Now I have noticed that if I set a lockscreen with a secure option (other than "swipe"), that there is an option to hide notifications with secure content. In this case, my mail notifications show up without details and simply say "content hidden."
This last option gets me a reasonable result, but it requires me to set a secure lock screen. I realize that without a secure lockscreen anyone can simply open your phone and read the e-mail anyway...but it would be very nice to have the options from stock N that simply allow you to disable a particular app's ability to just show on the lock screen.
Ideas?
You must not of understood the settings. What you mentioned was exactly what your trying to achieve.
In the main Notifications settings I have options for "On the lock screen":
- "Show all notification content"
- "Don't show notifications at all"
Click to collapse
That setting is applied per app and would disable notifications from that app on the lock screen.
Update:
I think I see the confusion. Your accessing the Global Notifications settings and not individually selecting the app before changing that setting. The one you found controls all Notifications. Go into the app like this and change the setting per app.
(GOTO Settings>Notifications>Select App you want and then set On the Lock Screen to Do not show notifications at all(on the lock screen, this app only))
Correct me if I'm wrong but you just want no notifications from a particular app, only on the lock screen but want normal notifications to work while it's not locked. This would achieve that.

NOTIFICATION ACCESS for ALWAYS ON EDGE LIGHTING APP

Hi friends,
I hope in your help
I have a Xiaomi redmi note pro from a few days
On my precedent device I used Always On Edge lighting app by playstore
the app need the permissions for the notification access
but I allow this but the app continue to ask me the notification access so this not work
I make so:
I open the app
I tap to put the flag on notification access
it open the page of settings
I disable xiaomi service framework
I enable AOE
I enable xiaomi service framework
I go back
I watch the video to save
It telled me save succesfull
but the app ask me again the notification access
can someone help me?
Late reply, but anyway;
You have to open up phone settings, scroll down to "further settings" (right below "apps"), scroll down to choose "accessibilty", open the "more downloaded services" option. Check that AOE is set to "on".
Anyway, I just can't make AOE work as it should. I get notifications to show up, but since the screen light up for 30 sec's and then fade out to off, the notification also disappear. For instance, since screen always lights up on incoming calls, the notification disappears as soon as the screen goes black.
Anyone could help? I'm out of ideas....

Edge lighting - is it working for you?

Doesn't seem to be working for me. I know that with the S10+, I used the Edge Lighting Fix app (https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/themes/app-edge-lighting-fix-apps-actual-edge-t3935319) but not even that was working.
Just wondered if anyone has it working and for what apps it's working.
Thank you!
Mine works. Make sure you have "All available apps" selected
It is working for me. I have selected Messages, Signal, Whatsapp and it works without an issue. Sad thing though that Facebook Messenger is not there because Facebook wants us all to us their crappy bubbles.
I see it's now working for NextSMS but I can't seem to get it to work for Aquamail....

Maybe it is the same problem as with the fb messenger. The app is just not compatible with it or the other way around. Is the app listed in the edge lighting menu? If not then there is a compatibility issue.

I'm having the same problem as OP on my Galaxy S20+, I cannot get edge lighting and notification to display when the screen is off.
Here are some configurations I've set on the phone.
Do Not Disturb is Disabled
Edge Screen -> Edge lighting is Enabled
Edge Lighting -> Show Edge Lighting set to Always
Edge Lighting -> Choose apps set to All available apps
Lock Screen -> Notification is Enabled
Lock Screen -> Notifications -> View Style is set to Details
Lock Screen -> Notifications -> Hide content is Disabled
Lock Screen -> Notifications -> Notification to show is set to Alert and silent notifications
Lock Screen -> Notifications -> Show on Always On Display is Enabled
App info -> App settings -> Show notifications is Enabled
App settings -> Notification category -> Show as pop-up is Enabled
App settings -> Notification category -> Alert is Enabled
Device Care -> Battery -> Power mode set to High Performance
Device Care -> Battery -> Power mode -> Adaptive power saving is Disabled

Have you tried "Glimpse Notifications" by @xrad? Using this application, I can get notifications to display when the screen is off, but I don't understand why I require a 3rd party application to do something that was intended by Samsung. The mentioned application is not meant to run along with Samsung's Edge Lighting, but doing so, Edge Lighting takes priority and actually works...
I'll give it a shot!

I am running the same configuration. My Edge Lighting is working fine. It is just the FB Messenger that is not compatible so I use Edge Lighting+ just for that one particular notification.

Yes, I've tried individually selecting the apps and toggled it to select all available apps.
I've generated push notifications via multiple apps (Google Calendar, Twitter, Microsoft Outlook, Gmail and Push Notification Tester) these applications trigger Edge Lighting when the screen is on, but not when the screen is off and phone locked.
I have mentioned earlier, Show Edge Lighting is set to "Always", I get the same result when I set it to "While screen is off".
The problem is having 'Edge Lighting' to work when the phone is locked and screen is off. (Without relying on 3rd Party applications from Google's Play Store like aodNotify, LED Me Know, NotifyBuddy, Notification LED or Glimpse Notifications).

You dont have to underline it, I understand what your problem is.
I think have found the solution to your issue
Install NiceLock for GoodLock applications and install Edge Lighting+ and be sure that this app is excluded from being put to sleep.

These applications are battery suckers, some of which require higher privilege than needed. I'd usually stay away from 3rd party tools especially when that particular feature is natively supported on the stock/official ROM.
Using an application that mimics a native function doesn't solve the problem, it ignores it.

I've already installed Samsung's GoodLock app including Edge Lighting+, it only provides you extra visual effects for Edge Lighting.
I don't see NiceLock on 'Good Lock' application, unless you're referring LockStar or NotiStar. I assume this is not an official application by Samsung.
I honestly don't think that it will solve the 'Edge Lighting when screen-off' problem that I have, this function should be working without 3rd party application.

Which applications do you mean? I am referring to your answer under the first quote.
I am proposing Edge Lighting+ because I cannot remember what I did to get it working on my S20U. I think that since installing Edge Lighting+ and excluding it from various battery optimizations it started working just fine.
NiceLock is an app that combines all GoodLock apps in one unified UI:

The S20U variant may be different to S20+ 5G... I am not sure.
I see the exact applications on "Good Lock" and more (such as NavStar, Home Up and NotiStar).
Installing some of these applications didn't have an affect on the functionality of Edge Lighting.
Yes, I've tried fiddling with battery optimizations and changed the phone's power state to high performance (which disables battery optimization totally), it still did not work.
I recall that I had to enable pop-up notifications for Whatsapp in order to get it working. I´ve done the same with Signal. Since Android 10 this option is greyed out in Whatsapp because it is not compatible anymore. Try smart pop-up view (Advanced features > Smart pop-up view) :good:
I think this fixed my issue with Edge Lighting back then. Give it a try and let me know. I did some XDA & brain digging and found out that Edge Lighting is only compatible with pop-up notifications that is why the smart pop-up view has to be activated.

I've just tried the 'Smart pop-up view' and enabled it for the following applications Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook and Push Notification Tester, none of them triggered Edge Lighting when the screen was off.
Edge Lighting worked when the screen was on (with and without Smart pop-up)
If you take a look at Settings -> Display -> Edge Screen -> Edge Lighting: You'll see the following option "Show Edge lighting while screen is off" <--- This option does not work (yes, I've also tried to set it to "always").

I don´t use the apps that you have mentioned but if they can be turned on in the Smart Pop-up View, then it should work with Edge Lighting. I have just tested it and when I turn off the Smart Pop-up view for Whatsapp, it does not turn on the Edge Lighting while screen is off (with AOD on). Sorry mate, I ran out of ideas

All good. We probably have a different issue entirely.
Was your problem app specific? For you, was it only 'Whatsapp' that didn't work while other application did, like e-mail notification, calendar notification etc or did any other application work for you? (excluding "whatsapp"). Because for me, it's every single application that supports Edge Lighting, that is not working while the screen is off.
Have you received the August update/patch ? Because I still haven't.
Also, I have the Exynos chip variant instead of Snapdragon, not sure if it it'll be related (different firmware maybe?)

I am using the Exynos variant and I am on ATGB Update so yes, I am on August security patch. Edge lighting worked since day one and I have already fixed its issues in the first week. My problem was with Signal, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. GMail worked right away but I have shut it down and the original SMS app worked as well. I had to enable Smart Pop-up View for Signal and Whatsapp, and install "Edge Lighting for all Apps" in order to get Messenger notifications as Edge Lighting.
I have same issue, but it seems to be at core of System. When my phone screen is off, or off locked, I get NO visual notifications at all, only sound. Screen never comes on, Edge won't light up. Works perfect if screen on and unlocked. I have same settings as shown in previous messages

Question Vivo X80 Pro [Origin OS, CN Version] - Bugs & Experiences - Let's share

Dear Forum,
after scanning the x60 and x70 threads about notification issues I'm still struggling with missing notifications and badges for certain apps [in this case Signal and Threema]. What I did so far:
- uninstall com.vivo.pem via ADB App Control
- set notification settings correctly for the apps: (Allow notification, allow smart notification, Floating notifications on (Threema, Signal), Lock screen notifications on (Threema, Signal), display notification details on lock screen, Chats: priority display) // (Home Screen icon badges only for Whatsapp available for some reason)
- set single permission settings for the apps: autostart on, startup on, floating window on, desktop shotcuts on, display on lock screen on, background pop-ups on, Remove permissions and free up space off
- set display settings: show on the off-screen on, show on the lock screen on, show on the home screen on, show in the status bar on, notification method: original icon
- set battery settings correctly: Boost mode, saving mode off, high background power usage on, always on display on, optimize battery life off, auto enable battery saver off
[Phone settings: Drawer style, dark mode, Android Style control center, Vivo Origin System Launcher]
Whatsapp is working: Home Screen notifications, badges, also lock screen notifications - Threema and Signal are not working, driving me a bit crazy. "Sometimes" there is a notification sound, sometimes not. Starring at the lock screen with turned on blue ambilight, it sometimes appears, sometimes not. So my questions:
1) Is there anyone who has experience with Signal and Threema notifications on a Vivo device and could share his/her solution?
2) Should I uninstall also com.vivo.abe and com.iqoo.powersaving?
3) There are no badges for almost all third party apps (Whatsapp badges are working) - is there a way to change it, to get also badges for Signal, Threema, Telegram and so on? (Change Launcher?)
I appreciate your help!

I turned dark mode off, Threema notifications in the status bar are working like 70% now, sometimes they don't - that's so weird.
Is there a solutions for getting badges? Maybe changing the launcher?

I knew that tutorial before. For me the notifications in status bar and home screen for Threema and Signal did not work having dark mode turned on. Switching to the brigth/light mode the notifications work perfectly.
Considering the badges - I get used to it not having badges for messaging apps.
Just for the readers, you can turn on badges on the home screen for the following apps (Origin OS, Dim9000):
- Designs
- Settings
- iMusic
- iManager
- Kuaishou
- Messages
- Notes
- Recorder
- Telephone
- Clock
- V-Appstore
- Vivo
- Vivo.com
- VivoCloud
- Whatsapp

To be honest, I do not know. While getting it working step by step I was very impatient at some point, so I can not tell you which setting is really needed to get it working - please feel free to test it step by step to figure out which settings are really needed. I will post my settings again a bit more structured.
The only thing I can tell you: I have uninstalled neither com.vivo.abe nor com.iqoo.powersaving, but with the settings below, uninstall of com.vivo.pem and a phone restart my notifications are working perfectly.
Tested and successfully working with Signal, Telegram, Threema, Whatsapp (Vivo X80 Pro, Origin OS, Dim 9000):

5) set display settings (Settings/Notifications/Display settings):

If i click on
settings/notifications/Display settings
everything is grayed out. I can not change nothing there. Anyone can help why I face this problem?

Just a guess - Vivo Account?
Are you logged in into your Vivo Account? If not, created one on their website and log in - please share if this is working...

What about your battery settings? Maybe before changing the display settings you need to do step 7) and 8) - but I've no clue why your display settings are grayed out. Have you deleted certain systemapps with ADB?
If you find the solution, just share it here.

I tried several things now. Going back some steps and checking again ... always stays grayed out.
I deleted only vivo.pem and some Bloatware. Nothing what has to do with display settings ...
So at the moment I dont know what to do next, but with rest of settings all notifications working for me. Only lockscreen notifications dont show up as well as tiktok notification. But thats more or less OK for me.
If I find out how to change Display notification settings I will share here, for sure.

Good point! If I activate them, I am able to change Display notification settings.
But is it recommendable to have them activated? I thought its kind of too chinese stuff, for being usefull here in europe.

1) set settings like in post 1
2) unmute chat in telegram (telegram itself)
3) switch into boost mode (battery settings)
4) allow background activity (battery settings)
5) turn off dark mode
6) restart phone
-> telegram is working perfectly for me with settings from post 1 and dark mode turned off. Always restart your phone to get things work. To be honest, this origin os behaves sometimes really strange :/ hope you get it work.

thank for the hint,I think bug in darkmode is the root cause,I can get the notification sound but no visual in notification center, clearmode is ok!
I have reported this system level bug to the PM of iQOO(subsidiary of vivo, they share the same OS) via weibo, hope they can fix it in the later release!

How To Guide One Plus AOD Only On New Notification Using Tasker

I would like to share my tasker project
Whenever selected apps notification arrive display turn on for 100ms (Modify it to your liking) and after screen turn off AOD activates (Without screen turn On AOD doesn't activates on os 13) with schedule time 5am to 11.30pm (Modify it to your liking). When all selected app notifications are cleared, AOD is disabled.
Currently I have it set up for whatsapp but you can add or remove programs easily from within the task.
You need tasker and tasker settings installed to make it work with all permission granted & (write secure settings permissions via ADB).
Just hold your finger on the home button at the bottom of the tasker screen and import.
Tested On
OnePlus 9 Pro (OS 13)
OnePlus 8 Pro (OS 13)
