Adapters and Casting - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi
I just bought a Pixel 2 XL off Facebook and am new to it.
1 - Does any adapter work for USB C to USB A Male if I want to transfer to computer? I have an older laptop about 12 years old.
2 - Does any USB C to headphone jack work? I saw some off Ebay but not sure if they work with any device.
3 - What is a good casting app? I have an LG Smart TV and would like to cast to it when I want to watch movies. I had a S3 and the video player app that came with it used to cast automatically and it would let me put subtitle srt files to it. I'd like something similar. I DL VLC player but not sure if that works with LG.

Hi,
I should be able to answer two of your questions...
1 - Phone comes with two USB cords.
1 x USB-C to USB-C for the OEM charger
1 x USB-C to USB-A (for 12 years old PC. )
Otherwise, here is a list USB-A to USB-C tested and reviewed by a google employee a few years ago:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ls/ref...nk_bb_marketplace&ref_=pdp_new_wl&ty=wishlist
2 - Not sure...
3 - Unfortunately, Google removed casting abilities from its devices. You have to pair it with:
https://store.google.com/us/product/chromecast?hl=en-US
Or
https://store.google.com/us/product/chromecast_google_tv?hl=en-US
Cheers...

The adapter I got for the USB C to USB A is only USB A is female and it can apparently only be used for OTG
Thanks

1. If you have an extra USB-A to MicroUSB cable laying around, they make adapters (readily available on Amazon) for the MicroUSB end to convert it to USB-C. I know as I regularly use one in the car and have a second one for any computer lacking a USB-C port, like an older laptop. @5.1's listing of cables may be correct in his home country, but not here in the USA. In the USA unlocked models came with just the USB-C to USB-C cable, the OTG adapter, the audio adapter, the SIM eject tool, and the charger.
2. Any third-party dongle with a USB-C end should work. If you purchased the MicroUSB to USB-C adapters I mentioned even an older dongle should work. The one included in the box is somewhat fragile from what I recall, so getting a third party dongle might be a better alternative even if you did get one.
3. I can't really help you when it comes to casting apps, as I don't use one. VLC however I think should work with your LG.

Hello,
Thanks @Strephon Alkhalikoi . I didn't know that... :good:

The USB C to 3.5mm dongle has a DAC in it so you need one that supports the Pixel (my wife has a Huawei and the DAC is in the phone, not the dongle, so the Huawei dongle doesn't work on my 2xl, and the Google dongle doesn't work on her P20 Pro)

I am currently on Ebay. Unfortunately the phone I bought second hand did not come with a USB C headphone jack.

USB C to HDMI

Has anyone gotten one to work I bought 2 from Amazon and none seem to work. Maybe I thought wrong but thought HTC 10 has displayport output.

I tried one at work last week, worked fine. Not sure what kind i got, but was not a problem.
OK thanks... I'll probably go to Best Buy and see if I can test one out there. Hope I don't have a bad port

I've tried 2. One worked, one didn't. Both were designed for macbooks, so ymmv.
I will try this out when I get the chance.
Tried one at the Computex last WE, for MacBook. Didn't work.
And after I tried the HTC10 and put it back to the MacBook it didn't work at all anymore.

damn thats not good news. still haven't had the time to head to local bestbuy. Hoping someone got one to work and point to an amazon link really miss having to show movies (for my kids) on the screen. Still have my MHL adpater for htc m9.
Adapter needs to use display port protocol, not mhl. Some adapters (USBC to HDMI) will use mhl internally and won't work (to my knowledge). See USB-C thread in 'Real Life'? section.

Yes I know can't use MHL for HTC 10.. Just saying I miss that feature. And almost nagging at me still is the MHL cable. starring at me saying why did you get of the M9 [emoji14] you could be watching videos on the 70inch right now.
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
Buy your nagging mhl cable a baby sister; a USB-C to HDMI port adapter / hub. It uses display port protocol and supports 4k. Adapter also includes USB 3.0 host port (so OTG) and 2nd USB-C port (for charger connection, I think optional, but I always use). Charge phone and watch at same time. See referenced thread for source. Win-win but approx $30. Need standard HDMI cable. Works well for me.

I ran into the same problem the mac pro adapter, it would charge or display not both. I went this route Microsoft - Wireless Display Adapter V2 receiver - Dark-Titanium and use HTC connect. It works great.

Just curious... you've had no problem charging this way? I wasn't sure if the 10 could take a regular USB-C charger or if it needed a QC compatible charger.
Partial answer. The HTC-10 does not need QC2 charger, just might charge slower or at various rates supplied by charger. I use several different chargers I had for my micro USB phones. Both using micro-USBC adapters, and USB-C cable direct. What I haven't tried (per your question), is fully charging via the mentioned display adapter. I doubt that the will recognize it as QC2. I will try this with the HTC supplied charger.

Sorry for the bad video; as it was taken with my Nexus 7.

Thanks for this, will be ordering one myself now.
edit: no audio out on this device, well then that sucks. Not good for watching video, yah I know I probably can use headphone jack for that but should work that way in my opinion. guess I'll still be on the hunt for a simple HDMI and audio output like the good old MHL adapter.

Is this available anywhere else? I was hoping to find this or a similar device on Amazon or something but nothing else has been confirmed to be compatible. Is your experience with this device still a positive one??
Also, I am assuming that if you want to supply charging power to this device you need to use a non-QuickCharge charger as supplying greater than 5V to the electronics in this device would be bad...? What about still using legacy USB-A to USB-C cables (like the one that came with the HTC 10) with the 56K Ohm resister?

I use mine all the time at work for about 3-7 hours a night (5 nights a week) - have it plugged into spare monitor to watch youtube etc.
I using the default charger that came with the HTC 10 and only gets slightly warm (charger & adaptor) when I been playing games for a hour or two.
Been thinking about purchasing another one as a backup.

Suggestion for an OTG cable?

I'm new to USB-C so no idea if there is a working OTG cable. Any explanation and/or suggestion please. Thanks.
I got this one today. Works great!
I suggest this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018G6IK7E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_gjdfybD9ZQT4X
As a minimum.
Will let you use you existing micro usb cables
Will fast charge
Supports connecting your ecisting micro otg gizmos
Tronsmart is cheaper and also supports qc but not otg.
Watch out for junk c cable. Bad fit and trickle charge only.
I'm looking into purchasing a usb type-c to HDMI cable. Is anyone aware of a program that would let me output my phone's display to my pc?

I'm pretty sure if you have the cable you don't need an extra program. It should just work.
Yep. And if your tv supports it wireless display too. Thought it would only work with LG tvs as that is what LG implied but I can sync to my samsung JS9500 just fine. Lag isn't too bad. And when doing screen changes or apps it looks like graphics glitch out but they don't. Haven't tested YouTube or my recorded videos yet. Have more important stuff to do first.

Charger/USB-C - 3.5mm Adapter

Are there currently any adapters that allow charging while also using a 3.5mm jack?
The Google store has this, but nobody can give me any information on what "Coming Soon" means.
Any ideas?
Moshi has them available for purchase now, but only on their web site and not through google.
Hopefully that means google will have them soon, I really want one to leave in my car but i dont know if i can justify the 45$ price tag.

I was researching for such a solution. In the XDA U11 forum, I saw this and ordered it, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0R1F1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You plug the provided 3.5mm adapter into it. It would be a bad portable solution, but might be good enough for a desk. I will report back on whether it works for the Pixel 2.

Yes please report back. As I understand those adapters need to have a DAC builtin, but if you are using oem dongle then perhaps it can communicate to phone through this adapter

I dont know if you looked at the product, but what he is doing is using the included USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that came with the phone, so that DAC would be there.
Spoke with manufacturer, they said it will work 100%
But I already gave away my P2, I decided to keep P1 for now until 8.1 release at least. I was excited about camera but I prefer P1 images they look better to my eyes

It works completely! I tested a bunch of scenarios and am very happy. Only drawbacks so far are the thing is about half the size of the phone and the pigtail is about four inches.
Here is what works:
Rapid charging with a USB-C charger
Playing back music through the supplied USB-C audio adapter with and without charging attached
USB cable to an iPad (at least it connected and was recognized but I could not access pictures; I had the same issue with the data transfer adapter so I don't think this hub is at fault)
USB cable to a Canon camera
USB memory card reader
It would not read my micro SD card in the hub's slot initially but I got it to work.
Notes:
I did not test using the headset adapter with a wired microphone. I don't know if that is supported and don't have one.
You don't have to change the USB settings to get it to work. It just worked automatically.
The charging port is the one closest to the pigtail. The other port doesn't work for that purpose. The white lettering on silver case is hard to read so it is easy to miss which port is required for charging.
I didn't test it with HDMI because I cannot get the phone to work with the HDMI cable I purchased even when directly connected.
Here is the link again: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0R1F1M/
*edit: got the card reader to work.
Hopefully we'll have a portables position under $45!
In the meantime I bought a Bluetooth receiver so in the car I can charge and use BT for audio to the car.
You could also buy a Bluetooth receiver and plug your earhones in it.

So the 4 inch pigtail goes into the phone, the PD charging port is connected to your Pixel wall charger, and the 3.5 USB c adapter connects to the data only USB C port?
Did you try to connect a keyboard, mouse, or USB Ethernet adapter to the USB A side? I am curious if those device work on the Pixel 2.
Thanks for your info.

Correct; that is how I connected it. I tried an AnyKey security key that presents a USB keyboard interface and that worked as a keyboard. I don't have a mouse or ethernet adapter to try. I did also try a USB memory card adapter and that worked too.

It will charge the phone rapidly, play audio through the headphone dongle, read a micro SD card, read USB keys through the USB A ports, all at the same time, not bad for $14.
Moshi speaks!
FYI, this is response I got from Moshi rep, regarding the charge/play adapter.
While we do not know when exactly it will be available in Google's store, the same product is already available in our own web store - https://www.moshi.com/usb-c-digital-audio-adapter-with-charging
We are aware of that some users have been experiencing issues with this adapter, and we are already working together with Google on a solution for this. With that said, it appears that this only affects certain Pixel devices, as a clear majority of users (including our own product team and Google) haven't had any issues when testing multiple adapters on the Pixel devices in our office.
Although our team does not have a solution for the reported issues at this time, they are currently working with different software updates to see if this may resolve the issue. We are therefore not working on any hardware upgrades at the moment.
Hope this information helps.

Same here. I would love to find anything that will let me listen to my music with my wired headphones and charge my pixel 2xl at the same time. Google created this situation for us when they removed the jack. You would think they would at least have one solution. So if you could send me a new link or post it here, that'd be great!

Need a USB C and 3.5mm Splitter to Charge and Use Headphones Same Time

I know Google has one in the store, but it's been a month and never has come out yet/been available.
Anyone find anything else that can do the charging pass through and have a DAC chip in the headphone port?
https://store.google.com/product/moshi_usb_c_headphone_adapter_charger
+1 to this, I drive a lot and my vehicle doesn't have Bluetooth but has aux in, so having the screen on, maps running, and music playing, all while charging is a must.
My solution has been to use a Bluetooth to 3.5 adapter. Less than ideal, but works
I is a Bluetooth to fm radio that plugs into my cigarette lighter port it also has a USB connection point so I can charge as well. Its a scoche one it was around 50$ when I bought it a year ago just have to find a new open channel when I go to a different town
well, you sorta can. The major problem with all of this is that the market hasn't caught up with the need yet so it might be a bit until we get something good but there is a solution:
currently I use:
(USB C to USB 3.0 Hub, ARKTEK Type C (male) to USB A 3.0 (female) with Type C (female) Charging, 4-in-1 Hub Adapter for MacBook Series Chromebook Pixel and more (Aluminum, Silver)) - From Amazon (Canada)
and
(TROND AC2 Aluminum USB Audio Adapter with 3.5mm Stereo Headphone/Speaker and Mono Microphone Jacks ) - From Amazon (Canada)
(just google the links, can't put them in here )
... that I've hooked up together in order to get digital audio out, as there's no available solution for this yet besides the moshi cable from google (part of the reason why I can't go for that is price and that its not available in Canada -.-). I've tried other splitters from various places that claim to do this but they don't work with the pixel, so this is your best bet. in the process of trying to use a USB-a male to USB-C female adapter (also from Amazon Canada) to skip the adapter and try to use the headphone dongle that came with the phone to see if that would work, ill try it and update afterwards.
*edit: forgot to mention, if you do use this setup you have to go to developer options > select USB configuration > audio source for it to work
This thread was already started for this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/accessories/listening-to-headphones-charging-t3687464
At this time we are limited as nithiiyan said "The major problem with all of this is that the market hasn't caught up with the need yet so it might be a bit until we get something good..."

[Moshi Adapter/Charger ALTERNATIVE] USB-C adapter for charging with headphones on

Hi guys,
I've searched the Amazon websites and I found what I've been looking for. Bought it, tested it and I can confirm it's working! The phone is charging rapidly (as intended) and the headphones are working flawlessly. Check the attached images to see the end result. It's a little bulky but it does the trick.
What you need
1. Type C to HDMI/USB 3.0/USB 3.1 Type C 4 K Adapter - EUR 18.99 (link)
2. USB 3.1 Type C Adapter - EUR 7.99 (link)
3. Google's Audio adapter (for 3.5 mm plugs) - already in the box with your Pixel 2 XL
The quality of the sound is the same as if the Google's audio adapter is plugged directly into the phone.
The charging speed is the same as if you plug the charger directly.

Moshi Adapter/Charger - USD $44.95 which is about EUR 36
The two adapters from above cost a total of EUR 26 (without shipping, depending on your country).
If you're unable to buy the Moshi Adapter this is a good workaround.
If you have any questions - let me know.
Thanks, I have those on order from Amazon. I will report back on how it works out.

Update :
Worked fine. Really not any more awkward than the Moshi. No crossover hum or static. The Aukey port extender CB-C59 I bought has two additional USB A ports on the back as well as both a micro SD card reader and regular SD card slot. Also an HDMI port. The Warmstor USB male A to C female adapter came in a two pack.
Total was $44 US.
For portable use, I think you can get a type-c extension cable to hide all those dongles. I've been thinking of doing something like this for use in my car.
I probably missunderstood something but why not use some of this ? A lot more comfortable then this big hdmi thing or not ?

I think it has no DAC.
It is my understanding that the "USB 3.1 Type C Adapter" you mention is non-standard and non-compliant with the USB-C specification. Maybe it works, but I think we should not promote those non-compliant widgets.
See this review of Benson Leung (a Google employee that performs technical reviews of USB-C products) for a similar product.

Most probably.
I just got one from Gearbest (for a 3 Euros...) and when I plugged it, my 2 XL said the accessory only provides analog audio.
Basically, useless.
You gotta make sure that the adapter comes with an integrated DAC, or it won't work on Pixel 2s. I learnt it the "hard" way
Thanks for the suggestion, i added a usb c extender coz after a bit of time the weight of the box is getting annoying..
just tried this out and bought similar stuff amazon in canada. Glad to report it worked didn't cost too much but in order to use it you need to first plug in a power source and turn on the battery bank if necessary first before plugging in to listen to music and you cant use the dongle alone without a power source
Yoo this is it, that one we've all been looking and waiting for! Bought it and the reviews say it works. Search for the line I posted below on amazon because I can't post a link on here which is absolute bull****.
USB C to 3.5mm Audio Adapter, HiMusic 2 in 1 USB Type C Male to 3.5mm Female Stereo Earphone Converter Dongle and Charging Adapter for Google Pixel 2/2 XL, HTC U11 and More Type C Devices (Black)
Some cheaper models claiming to have the DAC and Fast Charge are popping up on ebay and Amazon. This one is $12.99

Anyone tried it?
EDIT:
The one on the ebay linke above, and the Amazon link below, appear to be the same model. The Amazon reviews say it works on the Pixel 2xl.. Hmmm
