Unusual Solution for APN settings that can't be edited normally - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

If you have a phone which needs APN settings modified for it to function fully this may be of interest. In many cases you can simply go into Settings > Network > Network and Internet > Mobile Data and add an APN or edit an existing APN.
However in some cases you may find as I did that the SIM / phone combination does not allow you to edit or add APN settings. If you have root their may be ways to edit the APN configuration files directly. However with Android 10 and some other situations that becomes difficult if not impossible. In my case even the phone network service support could not update the APN setting. I knew what the APN settings needed to be but since I had an unrooted Android 10 device (a smartwatch in this case but it will work for phones also) I could not get access to folders to edit the configuration and it is unlikely it would have been saved due to Android 10's read only system partition.
On this device I had cellular phone calls and text working but NO Mobile data. I could see the APN settings were not correct for the service I was on for Mobile data to work. I tried everything for days to edit but it was grayed out and I could not add a new APN. In the process of pursuing a solution I found that putting in a different SIM (in this case a Textnow SIM for their new free phone service through Sprint) that I could edit the APN settings when that SIM was inserted. So you will need to find a SIM card that will allow you to edit settings.
Now the real trick involves hot swapping SIM cards so if you aren't comfortable with that then you won't be able to do this. There seems to be differing opinions on this but no phones or watches or SIM cards were damaged when I tried this.
What I did was edit the other SIM by changing the APN settings. Then when I hit the back key it said something to the effect the settings were not allowed on this. At that point I pulled out the SIM with the device ON. I then put back in the SIM for my service provider with the device still on. The settings showed up now on my formerly uneditable SIM ! Mobile data now worked fine. I
I had a second device I wanted to put the SIM in (identical to the first device) hoping the settings would still be there but they were not. Apparently communication between the SIM card and the phone gets APN settings transferred to the phone or watch. So I wanted to do the same procedure on this second device. In attempting that it did not seem to be working the same at first. However after trying for about an hour it finally worked on the second device also. So persistence pays off if it doesn't work at first. I kept turning things on and off in the Mobile data settings, rebooting and playing around with developer options. I wish I could say exactly what got it to work on the second device or why it just worked on the first device the first try but I haven't been able to pin down the variable which achieved success.
But the conclusion is that is you can't edit your APN settings normally you may have success with this method if you keep at it a bit. Good luck and please post here if you have success with this method and share any insights into how you got it to work for your device.

I know I'm a little late your one man party here. I just wanted to finally clear the air on this once and for all. So that every one can edit any and every so called "locked APN" for whatever carrier and or devices. So here we go. First off long time telecom cyber security engineer.
Step 1: Find all the APN's that your specific Carrier used for your Sim card and device. Write them down or screen shot them. Some carriers and devices may only use 1, others 2-3 +.
Step 2: Click and add another APN just as the 1 that is locked on the device. Option for option identical and click save. If you have only 1 APN. It should have now saved, unlocked the APN and you should have 2 identical. You can now go back and edit the APN that you just created. If not or you can't it usually means you have more APN's to add before they will unlock. Ultimately allowing for deletion. Have patience as this may require a little time of trial and error. Good luck all and have fun with it.

[Q] Samsung S4 mini SGH-I257M unlock help

Hi,
1. I bought a Samsung s4 mini SGH-I257M, locked by Telus.
2. I tried install super root, but each time it tried to launch the application, a shield from up-left corner will block it to run.
3. I asked a mobile shop unlocked for me with Z3X, but the sim card cannot be registered (the sim card is not from Telus.) Every time when the phone try to register the sim card to network, there is a small shield icon will shows in the up-left corner and blocks it.
4 After two days, I went to the shop and got my phone back. I rooted my phone with Root Dashi, a chinese root software. It works! I inserted a Fido sim, the shield no longer there, but I still cannot register my phone to the network. Any idea?
Sorry for my English.

Rooting and carrier unlock are not the same thing. it sounds like you do not have an APN for Fido or slightly possible the shop was not successful, but if so the Fido SIM should prompt the phone to ask for an unlock code.
If so, there are tons of outfits that offer carrier/provider unlocking. You can Google the string "carrier unlock SGH-I257M". You will find How to videos on YouTube regarding unlocking as well.
But likely it is just a lack of an Fido APN not allowing it to register on the repeater. I looked for the APN BTW, No luck.
You might also do some XDA searches on Chinese online Rooting. The XDA Developer Arco68 has an excellent method that works very well on your phone if you should loose the root you have.

What do you mean "do some XDA search on Chinese online Rooting".
Should I ask Arco68 and see is there a i257m ROM for me?
When I power on my phone with Fido SIM card, it won't ask for unlock code any more. Where I can get the APN setting?

There are several threads on XDA about Chinese online rooting, it has been found that IMEI's, personal data and so forth have been transmitted to the host servers in the rooting process and links on XDA (wisely) have been banned until the matter has been fully researched. There is a good search function on these forums. You can find info.
Asking a developer for a specific ROM is bad form, just asking generaly in the Q&A section in will net what you are seeking. The Dev's are not paid, they donate serious work to the community as a whole, Read the forums for the i9195's, those are the ROMs available right now.
Read up on APN's, locate Fido users, call fido, do research. Anyway, hope some of that helps, it's about all I know about Fido. Learning with some effort is well worth the time spent. No one is born knowing this.

Open the Internet browser icon on your device and start browsing. There are occasions where restarting your device is needed before it can browse. If you cannot connect to the Internet, restart the phone and try browsing the Internet again.
NOTE: The created APN will show up on the APNs screen. To activate the APN, tap on the radio button located in front of APN.
Hi Systwk,
Thank you! Actually I use Chatr, not Fido. Because I don't want damage my current SIM card (cut to micro), so I use FIDO sim card which is currently not in use to test my phone. I got my SIM adapter today. I cut my Chatr SIM card and tested with my phone. It says registered on network, but the notification on the main screen says ?Selected network(chatr) unavailable", and I cannot make any calls. When I choose "Select automatically", it will say "unable to connect, try later".
Do you have any idea?
BTW, I tried with APN FIDO, it's not work.

farewellartist's suggestion is a good one. It could help to see what is going on. That aside, you have to use an APN that matches the network you intend to use and the account has to be active. Also the network protocol set on auto shows it finds the Network, the Sim and phone can connect, but it also needs to know how to communicate with it to register on the system. That's possibly the issue.
You really may find some help calling your Providers tech support regarding connection. Yes, that about as fun as banging your toes with a hammer, but usually has better results. It may be as simple now as plunging in an Access Point Name, user name and password in the APN. (Some Pre-Pay acct's use user and Password) Good news is you DO have connectivity. It's now down to details.
Keep plugging along, you are making progress.
Here is the support link for their Pre-Pay. I'm in Florida so I'm clueless regards to who you are dealing with.

You are certainly not weak on signal. As long as you have the APN set at 'APN: chatrweb.apn' you should register.
Rare as it is, Bad SIMS happen. (Murphys Law). Just to rule out you can try the below and I Know the steps getting there are not needed, but it's for others in the future who may be newer at this:
To check connection at the base level try the following.
GoTo: Settings-Connections-Network connections-More networks-Wireless and networks-Mobile Networks-Network Mode, THEN start ticking the 4 setting starting with GSM only, and work upwards. It can't hurt.
Also when trying to connect with chatr, in the search for Network operators/Available Networks in mobile Networks, when it's done searching nets available, choose one chatr. not auto. If it finds two chatr towers try each.
I'm adding the chatr APN for anyone in the future as well. I assume you have the same but it's not in the screenshots.
You must be frustrated by now, hope someone else with experience on chatr can offer a fix. I assume you did get on either Telus or Bell so you know the thing connects, a replacement SIM is the last option I can think of.
Good Luck.............

If it were me I would not re-flash anything. The connection problem would not likely be from a carrier unlock. Also it is not likely it would be from rooting or installing the CWM boot loader.
You have a known system now, you know when it worked, and you know the few modifications you have done. Even if you have called Chatr tech support before, it might help to call again and tell them it will not log on to their system. DO NOT tell them you have rooted the phone, DO NOT tell them you installed a boot loader. If you do that, they will probably say that is the problem, END of support. Just say it was unlocked by a dealer and now takes their SIM but it won't work.
They should walk you through each step of the configuration, they want your money every month, you want their service. Good place to start. Give them your IMEI, make sure it's good and not 'blocked'. it's in the settings/about device/status or dial *#06#. I'm assuming you already have confirmed your phone is comparable with chatr, I think you mentioned it was from TELUS, but with BELL, ROGERS or whatever, unlocking does not guarantee the Modem is the same as the new network you are trying to use.. There are several other reasons, but SIM, IMEI and improper configuration are the most likely problems if compatible.
There is a chance it is something simple that has been missed. You have shown patience, that is a big plus with modding phones. Going step by step and being willing to start over is something many here have done, and many times. Small problems are sometime the easiest to miss. So Call Chatr tech support, if they have an outlet near you maybe you can get a replacement SIM from them, (I would check that first) as I mentioned before.
One other thing to try, see if you can get a new Pre-Pay/month to month SIM from TELUS or the original carrier the phone was branded for. It should work and if not, they know their configuration. I'm out of suggestions, hopefully someone from Canada can be of more help. Don't give up. There are always answers.
Thank you, Systwk
The SIM card works with my old phone, so probably is not the SIM card problem. I take out the SIM card from S4 mini and power on it, the signal still shows good. So, I think flash ROM is the most simple way for me. Anyway, I will can chatr on Monday.
Hi Systwk, I called Chatr just now. She said the APN setting is only for Internet and I need to go to a Chatr shop to check my phone and SIM card. I think I will go this weekend.
I think you bought the phone that has been report as stolen and has been blacklist so it is block on all network in Canada.
QCN FILE
If you are having a problem getting a signal on your I257M message me I will send you the qcn file for it so you can write it to phone via QPST.

How do you set a custom APN?

I just got a brand new unlocked HTC 10 today straight from HTC.com. My cellular carrier is Red Pocket Mobile - an AT&T MVNO.
I connected the phone to WiFi and applied the system update for Nougat. I'm trying to set my APN for Red Pocket and it's forcing me to pick a carrier from a list that doesn't include Red Pocket. I select AT&T to get passed this and it allows me to add my APN settings. It won't let me actually switch to that APN though. There's a lock icon next to the AT&T settings and it doesn't seem to want me to change.
I've never seen this behavior on an Android phone before. Is this something new for Nougat? Is there something simple I'm missing here?
Thank you for any assistance
PS: See the attached screenshot. Notice that there's no radio button for me to click on next to the APN I've entered.
The answer is you have to select "US Travel SIM" from the list of carriers for it to allow you to switch APNs. Of course I figure it out minutes after asking for help.. :silly:
In my defense, it's not real obvious.
EDIT: I am so confused. I selected US Travel and input all the APN data. It doesn't allow me to select it now. It allows me to when I don't fill it out entirely though.
EDIT 2: The instructions I have from Red Pocket instruct me to set APN Type to: Default, mms, supl It seems like putting this in disallows me from using the APN for some reason. I hope it'll work without this setting.

XZ2 Compact APNs Locked?

I've been using my XZ2 Compact on Verizon since it was released. No issues. Switched to Total Wireless today, and my internet will not work. Voice and text works fine. Total Wireless operates on Verizon's network. This SIM card works fine when I put it into a Google Pixel.
My APN settings are locked (there is no "+" button). Automatically updating the APN settings adds a Verizon profile that is totally different than the one that automatically popped up on my Pixel. I can delete the existing APN profile, but I cannot add one. I've restarted the phone many times, both while connected to WiFi and not. I get internet back immediately if I reboot with the Verizon SIM.
I've searched around the interwebs, and I cannot find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I use another mvno and the part that's most important is 'apn name' when using an mvno mine has to be set to say reseller... Have you tried pressing download internet settings? That usually fixes the problem and bring back the plus or allow you to manually change the apn setting after it downloads it. Take it you aren't using the dual sim as sometimes switching the Sims around brings back the apn menu.
Thanks for the insight. I have tried downloading settings several times, it just bring back the "VZWINTERNET" APN.
It is a single SIM US model.
I have not tried renaming the APN. That is the one thing I can edit on it.

Does total wireless publish the apn settings? Sometimes ios/android uses slightly different settings. Just look at what apn name should be, and try to match it up..

Not Registered to Network?

Today I lost my ability to make phone calls or do anything with my phone away from WIFI.
If I tried to make a phone call, I'd get a "Not Registered to Network" error message.
I can still do WIFI calling but nothing else away from WIFI connection.
I then went into network settings and chose "manual" for network operators. I was able to restore texting and calling. But I have no data. The options that I see from the scan after choosing "choose network operators manually" are 3-5 choices and they all read "Home". Some of these options give me error messages and others gives "Registered to network" - which then lets me call and text message.
So far I have tried rebooting. Taking out the sim tray and placing the sim card back in. I have tried resetting network settings. I have tried resetting APN to default.
Anyone know of a fix for this Samsung message occurring on the A70?
I am trying to do what I can to avoid resetting to factory defaults.
Thanks.
Others things I have tried:
Placing sim card in the other tray.
Making sure my sim card works in another phone. (It does.)
I fixed the issue.
Restoring APN to defaults or resetting APN, does NOT work, apparently.
I had to manually create and save an APN and enter the appropriate data, as instructed by my carrier's website.
The key data entry was probably adding a website (fake example: "t-mobile.com") to the "APN" entry, which was blank in the default APN that my Samsung was using. I wonder what happened there.

Last week an earthquake has occured at Istanbul (5.8) and all the gsm carriers stopped working for hours at whole country. That was interesting. And when you tried to call someone, phone were showing a dialog which was shown to you. And also as you said, peole had to use wifi to call someone via WhatsApp etc.
So, I think the problem you lived may be your gsm carrier's issue and probably they fixed it while you were trying to fix it yourself.

No. The notion of an outage of service occurred to me but ultimately the fact was my sim card worked just fine in my other phone.
The problem and fix had everything to do with the APN file. I'm just wondering why that APN would change all of sudden.
What I've read about Samsung phones is that this "Not registered to network" is a common problem.
I hope this thread will be useful to someone in the future.

I've done this but it does not seem to work. I'm using a local carrier from a not very large country so I don't think they have any auto APN settings on their network. When looking it up on their website the only option is to add the APN settings manually which looks to be impossible sadly.

Your only option is to contact Sprint and ask them for a service code. That is the code you need when you click edit on different settings in that menu. Another user had this problem and ended up returning the phone
Same thing for me too. Can anyone please come up with a solution for this. Had the same issue with the leaked firmware too and had to downgrade to Pie to get data back.

Bought 5 of these unlocked LG G8 phones for families in Laos and the update basically broke them. Now I can't get help from LG or Sprint. WTF...never again with both of these two companies. What a waste of my time and money, Grrrr.
I have the same problem. Can't edit the APN in Setting to get it to work. But when I go to ##data# and go to APN Setting and try to edit it demands my Service Code which I randomly entered 000000 and it opened for edit !! But most things are un-editable so that did not work for me. I.e I can edit user name, password, authentication, APN NI and PDN Type but I can't edit the APN to change it to my carriers "#777". Any ideas?
P.S. My device is actually sprint locked, but I'm using an unlocking electronic chip to make it work on my carrier
Update
This was brought up on the Sprint forum and a representative states, "We are only responsible for unlocking the device, not getting the APNs to unlock. You can contact the carrier you are trying to activate the device on or contact LG" as shown here. There was another post on the LG forum where an LG representative says to contact Sprint or the other carrier because the problem can only be resolved by the carrier here.
So currently Sprint and LG are passing the blame onto each other. This is sad to hear because this is the only disappointment I have in my purchase so far. Maybe if more of us comment on the issue to both companies we can find out which one is really at fault and get them to issue a fix?
I have the unlocked Sprint variant of this phone on ATT and my APN settings are also locked. My APN settings got messed up after this last update and once during a factory default. I fixed the APN settings for ATT doing the below steps.
Do the ##data# code
Then go to APN
Then on the top right corner of the screen hit the three little dots
Then hit reset to defaults
Next restart the phone
After that mobile data and mms started working. Hope this helps.

Do the ##data# code
Then go to APN
Then on the top right corner of the screen hit the three little dots
Then hit reset to defaults
Next restart the phone
After that mobile data and mms started working. Hope this helps.

Well we already had this but some people don't get auto populated apns
Update..
I tried deleting all APNs from ##DATA# and now the 3G symbol appears briefly for a second and then disapears every couple of minutes.

check the sprint community forum, there is a moderator that can help you get your service code, once you have this, you can make changes to your apn (I don't think you can add a new APN though) The update screwed up this apn badly, sadly lg and sprint are just passing the blame around

I got in contact with him through pm. Sadly he said the method he previously suggested didn't work.

I don't think they would provide service code for locked phones!

The phones are unlocked, even with service code, you can't add a new apn, you can only edit some parts of the existing ones.
So.. is there a chance in the near future or what?!

Not really. But resetting to default should help in most cases
FIX
So I continued searching and there is an adb fix that forces the "Add APN" activity. Enable ADB debugging and then type
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
This was discovered by xda member deskjet390 here. I used an app that a member named miji2 on another forum created that does this on device here. I also think I should link the website that I found all this information on as they're the reason for all of this so here.
