DNS changes - Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Questions & Answers

Has anyone foynd a way to change the cell DNS?
I've tried apps like the 1.1.1.1 but it just sets up a vpn which still uses the cell DNS (which is very slow)

You can use hidden settings for miui app from play store and edit the dns that way. It works for wifi and mobile data for me.

Thanks, I've tried a few of these apps and haven't found any of them to work

Notifications over wifi (gmail, whatsapp, facebook)

Hi,
Am having a real problem with push whatsapp, facebook and gmail notifications when the phone is locked/asleep while connected to Wifi (not with twitter though).
As soon as I disable WiFi and 3G turns on, all notifications come through.
I have tried all manner of WiFi sleep settings and read numerous forum posts but cannot seem to find a solution.
Anyone else with the same problem or a solution?
Thanks
UPDATE:
at home the wifi works fine and all push messages comes thriugh, at work they are blocked: could it be a firewall p[roblem?
Check if your wifi indicator is blue. If it's gray, the notifications won't come through.

indeed it's gray...
never noticed the difference...
so what does it mean when it's gray? what's the reason? how can it be changed? does it depend on the network or on some settings?

Grey = no connection to the Google services
It's most likely your company's firewall blocking direct access to those ports. It's the same at my company. I would have to go through a proxy to get the sync working but sadly you can't configure a system wide proxy. The proxy settings you can insert in the wifi settings only work in the browser.

what about setting, for that particular wifi network, a static address and google open dns?
If your wifi network is configured like ours it's: intranet - proxy - internet
Using another dns server or a static ip won't change that. You can't bypass the proxy with a network setting, the ports are blocked regardless of your ip address or dns server.
If your it service can't help you, you'll have to work around that issue by deactivating wifi every now and then to receive your messages from the google services via your mobile network connection.
I am having the same problem. Does anyone know what ports need to be opened to enable notifications to continue?

Or how about just not connecting to the office wifi? Unless he has some work related reason to use it, it seems useless to connect to for his phone.

Some apps wont reload on Wi-Fi.

Im using Flipboard a lot but it reloads on Mobile data but when i get home connect to wifi it never refreshes the app. And also i have this issue on another app. Its an local tv app. Same thing. And Netflix app. On mobile network they open. But on wifi it never refreshes. I also tried a couple of different wifi networks. Same thing. What is wrong and solution would might be?

Give static settings a try in wifi, and set dns address as primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4

Network issue with a couple of apps

I'm having an issue with Nest Camera app TuneIn Pro and Google Play store.
Nest Camera App isn't connecting to the Nest service, TuneIn cannot connect to streams and the Play store isn't downloading/updating apps.
Other apps I use are working fine.
I believe this issue may be related to the live wallpaper app I downloaded from the Play store. I guess it messed up network settings.
I reset my network settings and am having the same issue.
This only happens on wifi, they work fine on mobile data.
Before I reset network settings I couldn't even connect to my VPN. After resetting the network settings I can now connect to VPN while on wifi. When I do that all of the apps works fine.
How do I reset/fix this wifi network issue?
Did you already tried connecting to different WiFi without using VPN ? your WiFi / VPN may be the cause of the network problem.

I didn't but just did and the other band works fine. I was connected to the 2.4 band due to the wifi issue with 5ghz on Android 10. I've switched to 5ghz and it works fine now.
I wonder why that is...
Correction, the play store allowed updates but the other apps still didn't work.

Problems to create 5ghz hotspot

Hello one more time team
Here I'm reporting another annoying bug with my device
I have tried many time to create or make a 5ghz hotspot work
My external devices can see others 5ghz network but even when i create it with the RM5S, It is not visible.
I have done a network reset on the phone, check and unchecked the "support 6th generation" option in the tethering options and it just does not work
2.4ghz works fine
I have reported the issue via ticket but I guess will not be solved as my previous tickets
Anyone with the same issue?
Attaching evidence

some countries do not allow the use of personal 5g wifi tethering. its possible you live in one of these countries? the feature is blocked on the rom if you are in a country that does not allow it.

Hey Patrick
Thanks again for your answer
I read about that limitation in a oneplus forum but I don't really know how to check that.
Actually, i can add something to my issue
While i am reporting the hotspot issue, i must said i am able to share a "connected" wifi using the 5ghz band WHEN (Sorry for the big letters) in use an app called "vpn hotspot"
I dont want to confuse you
I dont need the vpn hotspot app to create a normal hotspot. But the default settings of RM ROM does not let me create the 5ghz connection.
When i connect to a 5ghz router at home, i can "create" another wifi 5ghz network using "vpn hotspot" app (i usually do this cause i need a vpn network for many devices)
The main problem is with mobile data. When i am not at home, the vpn hotspot app does "IS NOT" allowed to modify the system settings for the hotspot created by the rom, it only replicates the original setup and bypass the VPN traffic
So, going back to the original issue, i am not sure if it is a country restriction. I usually live.in Hungary but i am now in poland and i received the device on this last country.
I would even wonder how to create the hotspot using the wifi 6 standard as it should be supported as well.
Thanks for the feedback

sounds like the VPN software you're using is interfering with the creation of the hotspot.
if the 5g hotspot wifi works as intended using the normal hotspot settings on the phone without the VPN, then it would make sense that its the VPN app thats causing the issue.
I can create and use both 2.4g and 5g wifi hotspots, sharing my Mobile network. it works correctly. i do use DNS 66 to block adverts but thats the only VPN type software i use, and its only for black listing adverts and inbedded video adverts on sites.
so test the hotspot settings with the normal phone settings with the VPN off or uninstalled. - if this works correctly. the problem is with your VPN software. you would need to contact support for that app.
some devices do not work with wifi 6 option enabled. turning it off may increase connectivity issues.

Well. I know there was going to be some confusion.
The hotspot does not work with 5ghz even without vpn.
When i use my home wifi, I connect from my phone (no mobile data) to my vpn provider and then with another app, "vpn hotspot" (root required) i can share the vpn traffic to external devices via hotspot. When I do these steps sometimes 5ghz works, and i say sometimes cause I left the "vpn hotspot" wifi setting as default. I might change some network options there but, those options are not available for hotspot within "vpn hotspot" this is why i am blaming the ROM, But maybe you are right and there is some interference between apps. I will try to flush the settings one more time
I have flushed the rules of the vpn hotspot app and tried again. Working fine with and without vpn!
Thanks
I see.
You are trying to filter your wifi connection at home through your phones wifi and share thst connection to other wifi devices.
I dont believe it will work correctly. you're essentially trying to create a wifi repeater.
You're making your wifi chip do 2 things, and its unable to run two streams at the same time.
It state in the Hotspot settings
" Use hotspot to provide internet to other devices through your mobile data"
If you want to connect to your home wifi with your phone, and share thst connection with another device you must use USB tethering.
You risk causing damage to your wifi chip trying to force two connections on it.
using repeater apps, does cause the signal strength to degrade, (bacause you're using the same antenna to receive your home wifi and to create its own wifi. limiting the bandwith and can cause connection issues over time.
the wifi chips in android phone can create a repeating wifi signal, but they're not made to do it. normally as stock android runs when you enable wifi hotspot, it stops the current wifi connecting to create a new wifi access point. using apps to get around that may cause issues and even damage as i stated above. if your wifi chip breaks due to improper use, it will need a warranty return.

Question Change DNS for both Wi-Fi and Data.

As the title says I want to change the DNS for both Wi-Fi and data to Google's DNS servers.
Before this phone I used a Magisk module to change the DNS for my Mi Pad 4 (Wi-Fi only), but the module is not available anymore and I don't think it works for data networks.
All methods are welcome: ADB, terminal (root), Magisk module, app (root)...

Can't you just use a DNS changer app that acts as a VPN
Also on AOSP you can change your DNS in network and internet settings under private DNS
I'll look into it, I'd rather not go through a VPN. The description for the app is a bit confusing.
Miui has private DNS also, but IPv4 addresses are not accepted.
I think I have to provide the Google's host name for private DNS to work?
The Magisk module I used a while back uses terminal and requires root.

I'm a networking specialist and the network settings on Android (perhaps it's just Miui) make no sense at all.
It's very basic and counter intuitive to have hostnames for DNS servers for DNS settings.
All other operating systems including Cisco's IOS (which is based on Unix) uses 32-bit or 128-bit addresses for DNS, simply because these are direct IP addresses and are not alias hostnames.
Furthermore, direct public IP addresses do not need to be translated from hostname to IPv4/IPv6 address blocks in order to contact the DNS server, it's the DNS server's job for address translation.
Both Linux and Windows Servers need administrative/root (su) permissions to set the DNS addresses, I was expecting the same thing on Android (root permission via Magisk) since the kernel is based on Linux.
Despite my annoyance, thanks for all the help guys!
Blokada. I use it since last year, it acts like a vpn but u only have a vpn if u pay the premium, the free version allows you to block tracking, ads and change dns from both wifi and mobile. Doesn't drain battery.
Blokoda for blocking ads goes through a VPN server, that's understandable.
Edit:
Much easier to understand and search if they just label private DNS as DoT and DoH, currently not implemented in company networks yet.
Hello,
I am an experienced user on jailbroken ios and I inform you that we can change the dns server just by defining an ip address and its working and by just editing a system file, no need for third party application or vpn.
I change dns as if I were on windows I defined the dns ip address and it all works immediately in 4G cellular data.
On android at the time on android kitkat 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 and lollipop 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 you could change the dns server by editing the build prop and its market perfectly in mobile data and wifi.
Then in December 2020 I bought a smartphone to go back to android for the custom modding side so I bought the S20 FE 5G under android 10 and the dns in cellular 4G does not work at all, even by putting a domain name it didn't work at all.
On android the dns in wifi can be changed but the mobile data I couldn't find, so I went back to jailbroken ios a thousand times better than a personalized android.

You don't need root to change DNS on Android. You can use Private DNS which work on both WiFi and Mobile Data just fine. I don't think you can do that on iOS without jailbreaking.

Hello,
Android's private dns does not work very well precisely depending on the dns server.
When I enter the DNS domain name and well it does not work at all!
This "FDN" DNS server, for example, does not work on Android at all, even when entering its domain name.
FDN - Fournisseur d'Accès à Internet associatif depuis 1992
Going back to ios you can change the dns without jailbreak it's possible but you have to go through an application etc which simulates a vpn connection, except.
Off on ios at least once root I can define the dns server of my choice by defining an ip address as on windows when you change the dns server, also it works afterwards in non-jailbreak mode.
On my iPhone my DNS at FDN works perfectly 3G/4G/5G Wifi.
If on android I can define the dns server of my choice by entering the dns ip address it's perfect but unfortunately it's not the case!
