OnePlus 8 Pro Safe Mode. - OnePlus 8 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Well I recently bootlooped my OnePlus 8 Pro installing a module that I totally forgot is build specific..
What a dummy?...
Well Safe mode is certainly the easiest and simplest way to get you back up and running...
All you do is 1. Enter fastboot mode and select power off.
2. Start phone as soon as you see that OnePlus logo press and hold the Volume + and Volume - buttons till it boots into your system in safe mode...
3. Go into phone settings, then to Apps and notification.
Finally, go into all apps. Scroll down to Magisk Manager and clear all data from the app. Then you can restart phone enable modules restart phone again and back to normal....
For me it's a piece of mind now that we have no Custom Recovery...
This is exactly how I have done it twice now and worked both times perfectly...

Actually found this out a while back..I think it's a feature of magisk to do this when you boot to safe mode to remove faulty modules.
There is no need to clear data or go to the fastboot mode btw.
1. Hold power until it's off.
2. Boot and wait for the bootloader warning.
3. Hold vol up and down until boot animation.
4. Once it's booted just reboot again and you're done.
Now on boot all magisk modules are disabled.
Remove what failed and re-enable everything else.
:good:

I too discovered this the hard way (and for the same reasons)... Works well!

I shared something that works for me.. I did forget to put volume - so thanks for that...
There is plenty of people that might benefit from this...
I know I would have in the past..

Good to know this available option! cheers

Nah you miss my point, i think it's a good thing you put it up, I clicked thanks.
And I agree people will definitely benefit from it, maybe change the name of the thread to magisk module failure recovery or something so people know what it is..safe mode doesn't really describe it, just a thought.
Just helping you on a couple of things that's all, didn't want you wiping data for no reason and I wasn't sure about the vol up and down, it's just what worked for me.
The more info and guides there is on here the better..less questions asked.

Yeah I do know A10 has twrp.
I think A11 has a bootable chinese recovery or something in that area.
I personally am not worried about twrp anymore..
Really have no need for it...

why would this not be working for me? i'm on newest magisk on oneplus 8 pro....android 11 (11.0.2.2.IN11AA)
i loaded a magisk module that is not cooperating so the system UI never starts. i've also tried the "adb wait-for-device shell magisk --remove-modules". still no luck. would love some help. thanks

Might try by stating what you installed, kernel etc.
Force your phone off and hold vol +/- when you see the bootloader sign.
Just wait for it to load then reboot

I have tried the above (boot to safe mode) but nothing happens but system ui crash on start
I'm on stock oneplus 8 pro with 11.0.2.2.IN11AA. Rooted with newest magisk. Stock kernel. Had viper4android working stable.
I installed renovate ice in magisk. It installed ok but lost mobile data. So i uninstalled renovate ice. .. Rebooted. Then installed renovate ice again. Now all i get on boot is system UI error and cant access anything on the phone. I've also tried flashing the original boot.img to try to disable magisk but that results in same system ui crash/black screen

Ok so you may want to contact rice as they have components in their ROM that can affect system and as such it isn't just so simple as reliving a magisk module.
Furthermore they don't have a full roll back feature when removing the module so changes can remain, one of the reasons I wouldn't use rice, cyberpunk theme if you don't revert back to stock theme before removal for example will cause your stock theme to be lost forever.
Forcing you to reset system via recovery.
The very fact that you can't boot into safe mode suggests to me that there is a deeper issue, it's possible viper has something to do with this but I would guess it's rice.
If it were me I'd wipe system only in recovery and set up your phone again..
If you've tried to boot to safer mode and you've done it right and it's still not working then I'd say start with system, your boot IMG isn't the problem

Thank you. I reported my troubles in the rice thread a couple days ago but no responses yet.
I've been doing custom roms for years but this phone is very new to me. I think i can find how to wipe system in stock recovery but after that... How would i proceed to set up my phone again (with no system from the wipe)?
Do you mean i should do "reset system setting" in stock recovery?
... Much appreciated

Boot it holding the volume up button. This should get you into so-called "recovery" where you can, among other things, restore it to defaults.
If recovery also doesn't work (which would be unusual), boot it holding volume DOWN button. This will get you into a "download" mode where you can use ODIN to flash new recovery (such as CWM recovery which is very nice and powerful), or even flash entire firmware from scratch.
Good luck, let us know how it goes ~
[edit] oh and do all that while having it connected to USB power, in case the battery is empty.

Anything doesn't work , When I boot while holding HOME and volume up (recovery) appears the blue advice in the upper left corner and about 2 segs after the cellphone restart again, again and so on, When I boot with the down (download) the process on kies working good but when ends the cellphone restart again, again and so on. I'm start to think that something in the hardware is damage :crying:
looks like you messed something up there...
Anyway, if your phone is rooted, and/or you don't care about warranty you can get it in download mode (you said it works fine with kies until reset, so I suppose it means that download mode is at least accessible).
And after that use Odin to reinstall the stock rom completely.
Or, again with Odin install custom recovery, and then whatever ROM you like.
While working with odin, be sure to stick to the guides here on XDA. (for a custom recovery see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980)

If you're not entirely stock you'll have trouble using Kies.
I myself had trouble when tried to revert to stock ROM from CM.
It failed to restore NANDroid backup every time, and I also didn't succeed in flashing the stock image with Odin as well.
In the end, I succeeded with this ROM (which is modified stock TW), usin ODIN. You can try this, just read and understand the instructions in the thread before you do anything.
Ironically, after a couple of days after reverting to stock rom I was so annoyed by the speed decrease compared to CM, that I reinstalled CyanogenMod back, found TouchWiz stuff I missed via separate apps, and I'm pretty happy with it ever since.
Bottom Line: anyways, if you already on custom stuff with altered warranty, you must get custom recovery working first, then it will be simple.

[Q] Find which app made android stuck at bootscreen

Hi,
I installed two or three apps this morning from Google Play store. After that I found out my phone has some lag. I tried to reboot it that may help solve the problem. Unfortunately after rebooting my phone it stuck at bootscreen. My phone was rooted, and I have TWRP recovery. I have access to system file using it's file manager. Now I want to know which app causing the problem and how can I delete it from recovery. I don't want to factory reset my device. Thank you in advanced and sorry for my bad English.

Follow this guide. It's for system apps, but it doesn't matter, just look for your apps and delete the ones you have installed recently.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/guide-htc-one-m8-how-to-delete-apps-s-t2947154
Try to boot into Safe Mode. Force a restart by holding power and vol up. Then after the phone begins to restart (boot screen) let go of those buttons, and only hold vol down. You need to do this after the screen goes dark and the initial HTC boot screen appears. Hit vol down too soon, and you will of course boot into hboot.
If its the apps as you suspect, the phone should boot into Safe Mode. It will look like a normal boot into OS, but with only system apps and Safe Mode in the lower left corner of the screen.
From there, go into Settings and uninstall the 3 apps.

Same with my method. Delete the recent apps (OP said there were only 2 or 3). Than add back one at a time (if you really want them) to see which one is the offending app.

[Q] One M8 Stuck on Logo...Period

I am in need of some serious help. My AT&T M8 won't boot past the HTC logo screen and won't allow me to go into recovery or the hboot screen. I believe I may have wiped the OS on it; this is the only thing I can think of that makes sense. Furthermore, when I try to power down the device by long pressing the power button, it doesn't respond at all. It just stays on the logo screen. It was so bad that I just left it plugged in overnight and I don't have a clue as to how long it took to power off because I fell asleep before it did. If there's a video tutorial out there that someone has or simply a link that can show me how to install something via backdoor on this device, that would be great!

What were you trying to do when this happened?
Also, need much more info in order to help:

3) custom ROM?
4) what hboot number?
5) s-on or s-off
6) did you make a nandroid with custom recovery?

Thanks already. I didn't realize I had to hold down the volume down button after it goes dark. It got me into twrp. I believe I should be good from here after I download a new rom to sideload. But to give you a run down, I was prepping the phone to sell it by wiping the data and installing the rom the guy said he wanted on it. When I was going thru the normal procedure to install the rom (wipe, flash, etc) that's when the phone started sticking on the logo screen. My assumption was that I downloaded a bad rom, so since then I've been trying to get back into twrp so I can load a new rom and finally was able to after you told me this. I'll report back if a new rom actually didn't help the situation. I only thought I wiped the OS because something similar happened with my Note when I was tinkering and that was the result.

1) bootloader unlocked?... YES
2) custom or stock recovery... TWRP
3) custom ROM?... It was a custom AOSP Rom
4) what hboot number?... 3.16.0.0000
5) s-on or s-off... S-OFF
6) did you make a nandroid with custom recovery?... It was erased

Failure to flash ROMs can often be solved with fastboot erase cache, then install TWRP by fastboot again. Update TWRP version, if you are using an outdated one.
Also, if you try to flash any ROMs based on Sense software beyond version 1.x (huge majority of them are past 1.x at this point) you will likely experience extremely long boot times (10 minutes or more) and broken WiFi due to outdated firmware. But CM should be okay.

Okay. Do you suggest trying an older sense rom to see if it works? The last time touched the phone was when I picked up my Note 4, so I will look for something that predates that.
As for the nandroid being erased, I can only assume it was my actions that caused it to be deleted, but I don't recall intentionally doing it.

Sure, it couldn't hurt. With your current firmware, you will need a ROM based on 1.x software. There aren't a heck of a lot of those left. But there are a few. GoldenEye is one I can personally vouch for, since I was running it for a while back in the day:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705640
But I would definitely recommend just trying fastboot erase cache and re-install TWRP first. I've lost count how many times suggesting this simple fix has helped other users here on XDA, when ROMs fail to flash.

Fair enough. Just FYI, don't do a factory reset in bootloader (in the OS settings or recovery is OK). On modded phones this may cause the internal storage to become corrupted. Nandroids have sometimes been lost this way. This may or may not be what happened to you. Just wanted to throw that out there.
Also, there has been the occasional occurrence of internal storage being corrupted, possibly by TWRP. It may not even have been something you caused.

[SOLVED] Phone won't boot up after factory reset

Hey guys I've been on the XDA forums for a while to use XDA Labs, as well as get kernels and rom's for my Pixel 2 XL
I decided to factory reset to bring my phone back to a complete stock feel and now it won't go past the G logo with the loading grey bar.
I had Magisk and Kirisukura kernel installed. But prior to factory resetting I
1. Uninstalled Magisk, through TWRP and the magisk uninstaller.
2. Reflashed stock boot img to bring it back to an essentially stock phone with no modifications whatsoever.
The only thing that I'm thinking might have caused this is that I factory reset via the phone settings as opposed to clean flashing a factory image via ADB but I didn't think that mattered?
Regardless, no matter how long I leave the phone it doesn't go past the G Logo with the grey loading bar (Note: the bar does move and isn't frozen).
I've tried booting in recovery mode and wiping/factory resetting from there but regardless of what I do it doesn't seem to allow the phone to boot up.
Any help would do I really love this phone and it would break my heart knowing I've hard bricked it, the bootloader is unlocked as well but I don't think ADB works because I haven't been able to boot into the phone to allow USB debugging which is frustrating.
Thanks in advance for any help/replies

Bricked!

I have a unlocked bootloader EVR-AL00 that has been bricked for awhile now. TWRP is stuck on load screen on erecovery and recovery. I have tried everything to get it to work. I can get to the bootloader screen and flash from Hstool, Funkyhuawei, ADB and Hisuite but it always goes back to the TWRP load screen and stays there. TWRP crashed on me back then and now it seems EMUI is gone forever. Any new tricks out there that might work? Please help if you can! Thank you!

That doesn't work either
There is only one wat I came back from the TWRP cycle of death.
I followed the steps for the side load in the OP of this thread. The bottom of the first post.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-x/how-to/fw-emui-9-1-0-123-evr-al00-t3935995
The update is listed and can be renamed (I used the 123 update_full_base.zip)
The nocheck.img was a challenge, but I found one in a TWRP backup I had done and save off. Doing a search of XDA later I see that there is also versions in the Mate 20 pro and Mate 10 forums.
Now I have a normal eRecovery, but I cannot obtain root and the recovery StockAL00, magiskAL00 amd newer images changed in bootloader don't seem to make a difference.

Damn, that's worse than I had it. I don't know if there is a way to HStool or modified HiSuite take a ROM update, which would return you to regular eRecovery.
I'm hoping that can work if you can Fastboot from bootloader through those steps or HiSuite recovery.
With my crazy sideload I cannot root, I get prompted for updates constantly (with updates set off) and HStool & HiSuite didn't work. Since I don't have root cannot do ENMUI flasher.

To bad there's not a patch for TWRP...
I know there are some smart people out there that could tell me how to un-brick my phone
@ajsmsg78 is the smartest one I know on here. He has flashed stock, RR, etc... I bought his phone so he doesn't have one anymore but maybe he knows how to help you.

I spent some time in pm trying to help him but the phone still won't do what it's supposed to. I think he needs to do a data format but he can't get into twrp to do it and Huawei blocks a lot of adb commands.
