Looking for ROM recommendation (Pixel 2 XL) - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Looked through the ROM section, but didn't quite see one that advertised itself as what I'm looking for.
I was perfectly happy with the Stock Pixel 2 XL, but it no longer gets security updates.
Google revealed that there's the "Pixel Experience" ROM, which looks like it would be exactly what I'm looking for, but that project appears to be dead.

Can anybody suggest a Pixel Experience type ROM that's active? I just want something that's less AOSP and more Pixel (launcher, Discover, etc.) with security updates.

Its active:
Latest build date....for Taimen at least
Date: January 20, 2021 17:42 UTC
Otherwise, i would just use Proton (my preference) or LineageOS
If Google dont make it anymore, then youre left with maybe one Pixel type ROM,
Most folks are going to be using LOS based ROMs....the way its always been since Lineage was Cyanogen...

Pixel Proprietary Software, Stock vs AOSP

So, looking at the Pixel phones as a Nexus user I have concerns. I don't have a good grasp on what software is proprietary/closed and what is open. I've gathered from reviews and press coverage that the launcher is certainly Pixel specific (so far).
My biggest worry is camera software. Google is doing a good bit of work in software to make the camera perform as well as it is. If I were to build AOSP from source and install it on a Pixel, would the camera have all of that optimization still?
Has anybody run AOSP or any non stock based custom ROMs on their Pixel? How well does that actually work?
I could be wrong but i dont think there will be much work with custom roms until we have a working TWRP or any custom recovery for the pixel
I would guess that it would be tied into the camera app/libs associated with the device. Wouldn't a ported camera accomplish this? I'm not a developer, but I imagine that the camera app has built in support for the camera.
Yikes. For some reason I assumed there was already TWRP for Pixel.

Consensus on most popular Oreo 8.1 ROM?

Since I've got my Pixel 2 XL a few days ago, I've tried a couple Pie ROM's and it really isn't doing much for me. I've found that scrolling widgets don't work on Nova with Pie and I've tried a few other launchers that they do work, but I miss the features of Nova. There are also a few other niggles, so I think I will just go back to Oreo. Problem is that there are none that I can find that are still actively being developed or supported.
So what I am looking for is the most popular or at least the newest Oreo ROM. I know all the big name ROM's, but many are missing Oreo versions for this particular phone. What is the consensus here on the most stable Oreo ROM with a few perks thrown in?

Your best bet will be to search through the rom developers OP, go to their links, and look for Oreo roms. Or you can browse all things taimen on AFH to look for Oreo roms :good:

I was not aware that you could browse AFH like that. I have only ever used it for the download links, it never occurred to me to browse it.
Thanks for the tip!

[HTC Pixel U12+] Google Experience on HTC U12+

Hello, boys and girls,
After I switched to Google Pixel 4 XL as my daily driver, I have to say that Stock Android 10 convinced me right away. So I tried to bring a bit of Pixel Experience onto my HTC U12+, which will be used as a business phone in the future, to make transition between those to as smooth as possible. To realize it, I'm currently using the following apps:
Launcher: CPL (Customized Pixel Launcher) incl. Newsfeed Add-On | Source: PlayStore
Camera: Google Camera Port F1v10.3_7.0.009 | Source: [App] Arnova8G2's Google Camera Port
Dialer: Patched Google Phone 41.0.276316719 | Source: [APP][PATCHED] Google Phone
Of course I downloaded all other Google Apps from the PlayStore and deactivated as many of the Stock HTC Apps as I could.
Unfortunately the experience isn't perfect, and transitions between the Pixel 4 XL and my U12+ aren't in any way seamless. This happens mainly due to the fact, that the HTC U12+ still uses the old Android Nav Bar, instead of the newly introduced Android 10 gestures. Unfortunately I don't have any experience to port the Android 10 based PixelExperience ROM to our beloved HTC U12+, which is why I think that what I just described will be as near as we can get. Even though I would love to see PixelExperience on our HTC U12+, thus making it an HTC Pixel U12+. But that's not gonna happen any more.
That's why I'm interested in which ways others of us use to get your HTC U12+ as close to pixels as possible. What other apps do you use besides those described above? Give me your tips and tricks!

Google wants to know your thoughts on Android 12L Beta 3
Google has released a survey for people using Android 12L Beta 3, with questions about using the beta release on Pixel phones.

Google wants to know your thoughts on Android 12L Beta 3Even though attention is shifting to Android 13, Google is still working on the finishing touches for Android 12L. The third beta release of Android 12L arrived earlier this month, and now Google is looking for feedback as we approach a final stable version of Android 12L.
The official Google account for the Android Beta program posted on Reddit today, “We’d like your feedback on Android 12L Beta 3 that was released last week. This anonymous survey should take about 5 minutes to complete. Please only fill out this survey if your device is running Beta 3 (S2B3.220205.007.A1). You can verify this by going to Settings > About Phone.”
The survey contains questions about which Pixel device you’re using (Beta 3 is not yet available for the Lenovo Tab P12), system stability, battery life, camera performance, call quality, running apps, messaging, and other basic smartphone functionality. It also asks if you would recommend Android 12L to friends and family in its current state. If you’re having problems on Android 12L Beta 3 and haven’t reported them in the issue tracker, the survey is another opportunity to let Google know — the whole thing shouldn’t take more than five minutes or so.
Android 12L Beta 3 was released on Febuary 9, and didn’t include any significant changes compared to the second beta. It’s available for the Pixel 3a, 4, 4a, 5, 5a, and 6 series, and Beta 3 was the first time Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners could try out Android 12L. The update mainly fixed bugs, including ones that affected weather information in the At A Glance widget, broke the screen-off animation, and caused the system launcher to crash when entering split-screen mode.
Android 12L will likely be released for everyone sometime in the next few months, as a final build is expected before the end of Q1 2022, which is March 31.

Question Rom close to stock with best battery life - any advice?

Hi all. I just got Pixel 6 PRO and i am generally happy but there is one culprit. Battery life is terrible. It is just disapearing in eyes. I have upgraded now to Android 13 beta 2 and disabled all adaptive stuff (adaptive connections, adaptive battery etc) but it is still not great. Can anyone recommend me a custom ROM which will have great battery life? As close to stock as possible and non rooted. Thanks in advance.
If you can live without play store CalyxOS is an option especially since you mentioned battery life.
Cannot really live without play store... Any other advices?

why are you disabling all of the adaptive options?
It takes about 5-7 days for battery life to settle. The best way is to install A12 or A13 with a fresh install, don't restore apps or device settings and enable LTE.
If you are still not happy then try the Evo ROM.
My p6pro on a12 has bad battery lately. I thought a13 has better battery life. It does dissapear very quickly.
If you want a source check the attached link for custom roms
