How to search multiple (but not all) forums? How to sort results by date? - About xda-developers.com

Hi,
Two questions about the "new" forum interface:
1) How can I search multiple related forums (and only those forums) at once? E.g. If I want to search all "Pixel 5" forums (there are 6 of them) for a term
2) How can I sort the results by date (not by relevance) when searching a specific subset of the forums (a single thread, a single forum) for a given term?
Advanced search seems to provide neither of these features. You can limit search by "this thread" and "this forum", but you can't sort the results. And you can't select multiple "this forums" even if they are related.
Thanks

Ok I have continued this question there in this post.
But since there is no easy way to find all replies to a specific post in a giant thread (which is one reason I created this thread, and one of the reasons that I hate megathreads or general/multi purpose threads), in summary (as of 2021-Jan-18):
1) You cannot currently search multiple forums within a category. It is supposed to be supported but doesn't work
2) You cannot sort results on a per-search ad-hoc basis. You can however change your default sort options for all searches in Account->Settings->Preferences->Search Options

Thank you very much. I couldn't order by date my searches until I found your post. I would not have searched in account settings.

Question regarding six image limit in forum posts

... So, what gives? I'm quite an emoticonny person, I don't spam them all over the place but I tend to use five or six if I'm writing a long reply, maybe a few more if I'm in a very good/exciteable mood (I feel it helps convey the context better, because text is such a stale, unforgiving medium when it comes to misunderstandings and misinterpretations).
Also, there's been threads in the past where I've posted big long replies including multiple (offsite) linked images, which, were I to attempt this again, would be impossible. I understand about the feature cobbled on which allows you to upload large images to the post or repy and then reference them with square brackets, but I have this "thing" about not using that feature, as you can never tell if they're going to disappear or the forum's going to be upgraded or modified and all the pictures lost - when I host my pictures on my web host on my little corner of the Internet, I can guarantee that they'll be available there for pretty much as long as I'm still alive and paying the hosting bills. Plus they're my pictures, I'll host them - that's why I don't use flickr for storage of my thousands of photos, I'd rather do it myself so I have total control.
Ideally, I'd like to see this limit removed, deactivated or at least raised to a higher number (10 or 15), or maybe removing the restriction just for people who've donated, because I can see it causing problems in the future for people like me who might need to illustrate a long reply or guide to setting something up / tweaking some system settings with multiple screengrabs to highlight every major step.
I don't know what other people think, but I can't really see any reason for an imagel imit - if someone goes and spams a forum thread with three hundred pictures, they can be given a warning or banned from posting new replies for x amount of time, just imposing a blanket limit on every user seems a bit pointless to me.
However, in the scope of XDADevs I'm naught more than an 'orrible little luser - anybody else have any of their own opinions they'd like to add to this?
How do you upload images to wiki?
RESOLVED Answer in new wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Help:Images
Rather than starting a new thread, can I ask how does one upload images to wiki apart from storing them on a third party site? I have written a wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Xtask
I would like to add some screen shots but the only way I could do it was to link to one on tinypic.com:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
First I tried uploading the jpg to an album of mine in xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/album.php?albumid=1247
but I could not get these to display in posts or wiki as the extension is not "jpg".
I then tried to ftp and put them in a directory I created here:
ftp://xdaupload:[email protected]/Software/XTask/Screenshots/
I also put in a ReadMe.txt but cannot link to these as they are in ftp.
For wiki I have seen them loaded in "images" folder
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/images/ARTE200.jpg
For the forum, I could load them as "Attached Thumbnails" as I have done below but this does not display in wiki as the extension is not "jpg".
It makes sense to store the images on xda-developers so anyone can use them and update them as necessary.
Can anyone kindly guide me in the right direction as to how to use xda-developers to store and show images in a wiki?
Cheers
Tom

Wiki Vandalism

Hi All,
There has recently been a "session" of vandalism on the wiki, here is a short guide on what you can do to help:
1. Tell someone who cares
a.Mention on my talk page on the wiki, or contact a wiki admin (I'm the only one whose really active at the moment.)
b.Reply to this thread and post the details (I am subscribed to it) but if I'm unavailable then you can click the Report Post button (
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
) to notify all forum moderators / administrators immediately to the problem.
2. It's a wiki, you can help out too
By clicking on Recent Changes in the wiki you can see all the changes that have occured over the past few days.
Click on Diff next to the Edit that caused the vandalism.
Ensure the changes you want to revert are shown in the diff and that no valid information will be lost.
If so, click on Undo (found above the right hand pane of the "diff" view).
Again, confirm the Undo will not remove anything bad.
Click save page.
If a page needs deleting, put a Delete Tag on it.
Any problems please feel free to ask me, here, via PM or on the wiki.
Thanks
Dave
Thanks Dave. I've encountered such "vandalism" on this page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Developing a graphics driver for Windows Mobile
As you can see from the history, a user called "ramair" completely erased the contents of the page, on November 3rd, 2009.
I've restored the page to it's original glory.
Thanks for the tip.
I cannot see any malicious intent in the user doing this, so I think it's best to let it slide. Accidents can happen, I know someone binned the HomePage the other day by mistake .

Wiki's are meant for everyone, anyone can help, even if it's just changing a spelling or fixing a link. And just as anyone can break then, anyone can fix them.

Wasn't sure whether or not to just delete the page (I have no idea who, or what, Monban is) so I thought I would post it here. Linky

Previous threads preview when creating new threads

Hello there!
I have a small suggestion to help minimize duplicate threads.
This is especially prevalent in the HD2 forum where every day people make new threads about Android on HD2 (which, I am guilty of doing too...my apologies )
So, on some other vBulletin boards in which I am a member, they have a great feature.
When someone is creating a new thread and puts in the thread title, the board displays previous threads that have similar titles. I really think it is necessary to have that functionality in here too.
Just my 2c
Thanks for reading!
It's one I have suggested a few times before, but I am not sure what vB mod it is.
Any ideas?
Is this it?

Thanks, I'll stick on the admin's list and see what he says
thanks for reading
I hope the admins can realize this, it would be a great feature.

+1 on this
So I looked into this and turned on a plugin that shows related threads at the bottom of each thread page. Two problems with it: 1. It's not that useful 2. It affects sever performance.
If anyone knows of a plugin that will search as you type a new thread title in, that would be great.
Don't know about the real time search (I am not an admin so I don't know the first thing about vBulliten) but here is the screen shot of an example of what I was talking about from the avsforum board in the first post and the relevant plug in:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and here is the page for the plug in:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=151714
I understand that this plug in is heavy on the server. As such, is it possible to turn it on just for some high activity sub forums?

If you have a problem, how can anyone help, when they don't know, what phone you got, what ROM, What Kernel is installed, what caused the current problem and what you had done to solve it.
All these matters, for an XDA member to even THINK of helping you and they might just ignore, since you could not be bothered to provide the details. Most of all specific phones have specific forums and you should first use the search for that forum or look in the WIKI for that particular Phone, Imagine some one gave you an answer meant for a another phone that is not similar to yours, you could end up spending a lot of time and money trying to recover it. So be wise and do your part, search for your phone in this forum and post it there after you have tried searching for the answers you are seeking in that specific forum.
Check this out! You , YES! you are an " Android ". Not your phone but U.

If you are using XDA App or Tapatalk, long press on the post and select :good: Thanks Its easier to give "Feedback" in this manner than make an additional post.
I'm suggesting to open threads in correct sections and explain the situation thoroughly.

[Q] How do I subscribe to a forum using the website???

I could find no other answers to this question except one in a Samnsung Galaxy thread, and that didn't help.
I did notice there was one other question on this topic... But it was submitted by me almost 8 months ago. In response to that post, I received a response similar to one you would expect from a bloated government—a moderator instructing me—not a brief sentence as to what should be a simple answer—but instructions on how to create more post clutter.
OK.... So how do I subscribe to a forum using the website??? It is very easy and intuitive on the mobile app.
Here is a screenshot of my screen in Google Chrome.
http://imgur.com/yt3OLnh
I must be blind, but I can find nothing.... under any option or tab or anywhere (at least not obvious in any way) on how to subscribe to the forum I am in.
One suggestion if I may... since this data is so easily discoverable in the mobile app (it shows me what forums I am subscribed to), can't you take that data for that user and apply it to the website???? It would seem very logical and efficient.
Please advise....and I am hoping I can find my way back here....
@syntropic,
Since I use the XDA 2013 Beta - 1024 theme, these instructions use it.
To subscribe to a thread, first, scroll down to the bottom of any XDA page and click on the Style Chooser found in the left-hand corner. Click "XDA 2013 Beta - 1024". Now, navigate to the thread to which you would like to subscribe, and look for the "Subscribe to thread" button as shown in this screenshot:

Thanks, I see it on the general forum. However it's not enabled on every subforum, such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/t/lg-leon/lg-leon. Our only option is using the RSS feed in the pages source code. Subforums without the "subscribe" button also do not have their own rss feed.
I also tried to modify the subscribe link but it goes to a different subforum. 1507 is the lg leon forum id, but this shows something else:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/subscription.php?do=addsubscription&f=1507
It looks like our only option is page2rss.com. This has me wondering if vbulletin gets paid a fee for every rss feed and subscribe button.
